[00:00:00] Speaker A: Almost on cue, the horde appears. The scent of their enemies has drawn them here. Medieval's warning of soon actually meant now.
Good evening, and welcome to the Mal bulge. This is regarding spawn, the world's best spawn podcast. I am your co host, John Fisher.
[00:00:50] Speaker B: And I co host, David Williams, am the champion, which means I'm the best. And, Johnny, Johnny, that means anything you can do, I can do better. I could do anything better than you.
[00:01:05] Speaker A: What the fuck are you talking about?
[00:01:07] Speaker B: It was an Andy get your gun reference.
We were supposed to sing, fight about it, and then have a discussion about who fits the sweater better.
[00:01:14] Speaker A: Gosh, I don't know that show that well. You obviously know way better than I do.
[00:01:18] Speaker B: My best friend was the lead in the high school production, so I spent a lot of time listening to him.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: Why? Annie, get your gun. What does that have to do with the scorch this week?
[00:01:29] Speaker B: I don't know. It was stuck in my head.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Oh, stuck in your head?
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Don't ask me why I think things, Johnny. I don't know.
[00:01:35] Speaker A: I'm trying to figure you out.
[00:01:39] Speaker B: If you. If you. If you do figure it out, let me know. Inquiring minds are wondering, okay? But, yeah, speaking of. Speaking of the champion and the best there is, Johnny, I think. I think we've got the best there is to cover today.
[00:01:55] Speaker A: Yeah, we do. We're actually doing a fun little. Kind of out of formula a little bit, but still in formula. We're doing two issues, but we're doing two in a row. We're doing scores 26 and scores 27.
[00:02:09] Speaker B: Chopper two. Hopper. You could say.
[00:02:11] Speaker A: You could say that. I don't know what that means either. You're saying stuff. I have no idea what you're talking about.
[00:02:18] Speaker B: Now you know how everybody that I have to interact with on a daily basis feels, Johnny.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: I guess so.
[00:02:24] Speaker B: At least. At least you can. At least you'll recognize my labyrinth references when I make them. Nobody at work does. It's sad.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: I mean, it depends on how specific it gets.
You know, I have, like, a tertiary. I don't know. I like, like, labyrinth. I don't know how to, like, fucking memorize.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: Well, it was. It was one of my sister's favorite movies, which means we watched it a lot.
[00:02:45] Speaker A: Yeah, I've seen it, like, twice, probably.
[00:02:48] Speaker B: That's more than most people I know.
[00:02:50] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. We're doing a really good champion. We're doing John Layman's run on Scorch tier today.
[00:02:57] Speaker B: Hell, yeah.
[00:02:58] Speaker A: What are we doing here today? Well, welcome, everyone. This is regarding spawn for each week, we're bringing you two issues from Spawn's universe. Except when we don't. This week, we are doing two issues. We're doing scorch 26 and scorch 27. Right in the middle of that meaty John Layman run that we've been having going on. That's been awesome. Right on either side of issue 350 here. Just trying to speed up, catch up a bit. Because we were doing some other mini series and some other fun episodes. We're a little bit behind on the more modern things. So we're trying to speed it up a bit and catch up.
[00:03:30] Speaker B: Yeah, but, you know, Johnny, if. If we let ourselves get a little behind on the scorched. And have to do just, like, six or seven records in a row of scorched, not that bad. I'm not going to say no.
[00:03:42] Speaker A: I'm not going to complain.
[00:03:44] Speaker B: This. I might actually consider this some of the best spawn I have ever read.
[00:03:50] Speaker A: It's really good.
[00:03:51] Speaker B: And Al Simmons is literally in it for three pages.
[00:03:54] Speaker A: Yeah, that's true.
It's the new you, baby.
[00:03:59] Speaker B: It is the new you.
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Super popular. You see, everything's getting a reprint, basically.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: Oh, no, I didn't.
[00:04:04] Speaker A: They're getting a third reprint in Rat City. Sam and twitch number one is getting a reprint. And they're getting a reprint of monolith, I think.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: All right, nice, man. Monolith is a monolith is a fun little. Beat em up.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: That was fun. I need to read it again, but, yeah, it was cool.
[00:04:19] Speaker B: I'm excited. Excited about omega spawn being back.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. See how they end up on that crazy island together.
[00:04:25] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. It's fun. It's like. It's like the Shawshank redemption, only the spawn shank redemption. Yeah, but, yeah, speaking of. Speaking of redemptions, we got a. We got to read about a redeemer, Johnny. And to do that, we got a. We got to start talking about these books.
[00:04:41] Speaker A: Yeah, that's true. We got to cover the covers.
[00:04:44] Speaker B: Yeah, we do.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: So, yeah, 26 to 27 is what we're doing.
All right. Okay. I opened my. I opened. I was on the Instagram search thing. It's actually not that many naked women.
[00:04:54] Speaker B: You sure?
[00:04:55] Speaker A: Yeah. On mine right now, there's, like, half.
[00:04:58] Speaker B: I'm gonna. Let's. Let's take a look see here. Is this gonna be a new. A new segment of the show? How many? Uh, yeah, at least Todd McFarland shows up first. Oh, wait, this one has.
[00:05:09] Speaker A: I got a spawn in there too? Yeah.
[00:05:11] Speaker B: Yeah, there's a hellboy on mine. Nice.
[00:05:15] Speaker A: There's Jojo Siwa going crazy.
[00:05:17] Speaker B: There's a slimer, Johnny. There's a slimer.
[00:05:19] Speaker A: Oh, slimer.
[00:05:21] Speaker B: Oh, no. Very exciting.
[00:05:23] Speaker A: Yeah, I was trying to pull up cover price because we're talking covers and we got to look at these. What we got here cover wise?
[00:05:30] Speaker B: Well, I can tell you, Johnny, I got some good ones. I don't know what all the rest of them are.
[00:05:35] Speaker A: Well, there's two. I see you look at the second. Yeah, we gotta talk about the covers. And I've got the a cover here actually.
[00:05:42] Speaker B: Surprise, surprise, surprise, surprise.
[00:05:44] Speaker A: Cuz it's got our favorite Jessica priest on there.
[00:05:48] Speaker B: Hell yeah, it does. That's also the one I got, because Jessica Priest is the fucking best.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: And it's by Carlo Barberi.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. Look at all those bats in the background. Oh, boy.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: Yeah, pretty cool.
[00:06:00] Speaker B: I like that he takes the time to give the, the bats in the, that are closer to the front. Like little fuzzy bellies.
[00:06:06] Speaker A: Yeah, they're a little fuzzy.
[00:06:08] Speaker B: That's great. Oh, man. Carlo Barberi does great work.
[00:06:11] Speaker A: Yeah, it's fun to see him draw the draw c spawn. There's a bee cover as well, and that's by Donna Giulio. It is a mandarin spawn looking all smoky with a big old fan.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: And it's actually pretty dope as well. It's got, like, crisscrossing ribbons and streams of fire.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
I like the green title treatment on scorch too.
[00:06:35] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's real nice.
[00:06:37] Speaker A: It's always fun to see what different colors they make it.
[00:06:39] Speaker B: Mm hmm. I like how they match it to the sort of palette of whatever.
[00:06:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:06:46] Speaker B: Helps make it pop. That's what we like about comics, Johnny.
[00:06:49] Speaker A: They pop, they gotta suck you in. They gotta suck you in right off the. Suck you in right off the rack.
[00:06:56] Speaker B: Speaking of. Speaking of sucking us in, much like an army of darkness, when the Necronomicon is opened, we gotta pop this baby open. So that way we get. Whoops. Right into it.
[00:07:07] Speaker A: Sucked right into it. Yeah.
So we got the covers on the inside or not the covers, the credits. You know what I meant?
We got a covers on the inside, there's covers on the outside, there's covers all around.
[00:07:20] Speaker B: Covers, covers everywhere. And not a one to close.
[00:07:23] Speaker A: Nope. Yeah, we got the credits. And as we've been saying, john Layman's doing this awesome run on scorch. So we got script plop by John Layman with Todd McFarlane doing an additional.
[00:07:33] Speaker B: Script as he likes.
[00:07:35] Speaker A: Pepper in there. You know, art by our man Steven Segovia.
[00:07:39] Speaker B: It might actually be getting better, Johnny. I don't know how that's possible.
[00:07:42] Speaker A: Oh, it is. It's always getting better. Colors by Robert Nugent. Lettering by Annworld Design. We already covered the covers.
[00:07:50] Speaker B: Sure did.
[00:07:51] Speaker A: Creative director is Tom Todd McFarlane, and editor in chief is Thomas Healy. I want to say Thomas McFarlane.
[00:07:56] Speaker B: Thomas McFarland.
[00:07:57] Speaker A: They merged together, if you want. Really productive being.
[00:08:01] Speaker B: That would be their joint business venture. Name. Thomas McFarlane.
[00:08:07] Speaker A: Thomas McFarlane. No, it's creative director Todd McFarlane. Editor in chief, Thomas Healy.
[00:08:11] Speaker B: Hell, yeah.
[00:08:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
And so previously in the Scorched, the villainous sister of the violator, viscerator has returned and is seeking violence against the scorched.
Ooh, they were to watch out.
[00:08:27] Speaker B: So many v words in that.
[00:08:30] Speaker A: Violence. Violator. Eviscerator.
[00:08:32] Speaker B: Violence.
[00:08:33] Speaker A: Yeah. No, I like all the v's. It's funny. Good alliteration.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. It's fun. But they had a field day trying to be like, no, no, too many. They probably did it. The marks, the Mel Brooks method with. They put an extra v in, and then when they put one v word in too many, we're like, nope, this many and no further.
[00:08:53] Speaker A: That's it. Yeah. So this is a fun issue.
Kind of picking up with that plotline of viscerator and Bishop. We met them last issue or a few issues ago.
[00:09:03] Speaker B: We got a little bit of backstory on Bishop going on. Here is where we open.
[00:09:07] Speaker A: Yeah. Because we already got the backstory on the viscerator. Um, basically, last time when we did the, uh. That was with our Mark Spears episode, right?
[00:09:15] Speaker B: Yes, it was.
[00:09:16] Speaker A: Last time we covered the scorch. Yeah.
[00:09:18] Speaker B: Because we. We talked monsters with the monster man himself.
[00:09:20] Speaker A: The monster man himself.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Man, that was a fun episode.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: Yeah, he was great.
[00:09:24] Speaker B: Like, talking to Mark. Yeah. We opened in the jungle, and this is one of. One of the three pages with Al Simmons on it for this entire episode.
[00:09:34] Speaker A: Yep. I remember opening this and being like, oh, shit. Cause you get, like, the whole black ops team. It's cool to see Jessica and Al together.
[00:09:41] Speaker B: Yeah. We got operatives Al Simmons, Jessica Priest, and Frank Bishop targeting Joaquin Gaviera.
[00:09:50] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:09:51] Speaker B: There we go. I am not even gonna try to pronounce the name of this operation. So.
[00:09:56] Speaker A: Chemistry.
[00:09:58] Speaker B: Close enough. It works for me. Yeah, I do like that. The letters for this is like the old label tape. That's the. The plastic stuff that has the letters poked through it.
[00:10:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that's fun.
[00:10:10] Speaker B: That's real fun.
[00:10:11] Speaker A: I always like that little label tape.
[00:10:14] Speaker B: Yeah. With the inconsistent kerning. So very exciting. But yeah, they're just tromping through the jungle, you know, looking, looking for their target. Not wasting words or efforts, just, you know, prowling. Like the predators they are.
[00:10:32] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. It's like very, very predator.
[00:10:36] Speaker B: It is. It is very the predator. Before they realize that they're fighting an alien.
[00:10:40] Speaker A: Right. Exactly. Like the early parts of Predator or commando. Even any of those like eighties kind of in the jungle action movies they.
[00:10:48] Speaker B: Come across across the town where this, with Joaquin, is, is holed up. They're supposed to avoid the civilians because, you know, it's a covert, covert operation. And so they've got all these kids running around. And then we learn Al's job was to provide a distraction.
[00:11:06] Speaker A: So he blows up a thing.
[00:11:07] Speaker B: Yeah. And Al never failed an assignment. So obviously that changed when he died.
You know, I guess, I guess, I guess you, you know, you gotta, you gotta learn. You gotta relearn how to live and do things after you die, Johnny.
[00:11:23] Speaker A: You gotta live and learn and then get loves and then get necroblasm.
[00:11:29] Speaker B: I think priest's job was to clear the perimeter. So here she is, just like solid, snaking around and.
Oh, man.
[00:11:41] Speaker A: Yeah, just clearing him out. But the one that enjoys the murder is bishop. He's also sadistic about it. Jessica's just doing a job. Okay.
[00:11:47] Speaker B: And then Bishop enjoys it so much, he's got his little. After being. After, after killing. Cigarette.
[00:11:54] Speaker A: Yeah. Lights a sig, looks over all the dead people and he's killed villagers. Yeah, the civilians were, he's, this warlord's among these civilians and they're supposed to not hurt any civilian casualties in the ass.
[00:12:07] Speaker B: He literally just rendered Al's distraction moot. Like, what's the point?
[00:12:11] Speaker A: Yeah, we distract him to get the citizens out of there.
[00:12:14] Speaker B: And Jessica's, Jessica's very task oriented. And she's like, that wasn't, that wasn't the job.
Like, we're doing. We're doing the job. Not whatever the fuck we want to do.
[00:12:24] Speaker A: That's what I say to my employees all the time. We're doing the job, not whatever the fuck we want to. That's the job.
[00:12:30] Speaker B: That is the job.
[00:12:32] Speaker A: That corporate. I don't remember one of the mission impossibles. I think it was fallout where she just goes, that's the job.
[00:12:38] Speaker B: That's the job.
[00:12:39] Speaker A: I can't remember who plays it. It's not the one that plays Amanda Waller, the actress, but it's, she's, it's a similar actress. I don't know. Mission impossible.
[00:12:47] Speaker B: Mission impossible is good. I don't remember. I haven't watched them enough to quote them.
[00:12:51] Speaker A: So she said, that's the job a lot. And I just think of that all the time when I'm at work. So, yeah, that's the job.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: I mean, sometimes. Occasionally it's good to. It's good to know what the boundaries are for what you're supposed to be doing. It's easier to perform a task when you know exactly what you should and shouldn't.
[00:13:10] Speaker A: Exactly.
[00:13:11] Speaker B: That's why I don't do well with open ended video game worlds, because then it's like I could just go outside and not know what the fuck I'm supposed to do. Why do I want to do that at a video game?
[00:13:22] Speaker A: No, it's great. I love it. I love the open world.
I've been playing a lot of open world games. I've been playing new Vegas. After watching the show.
[00:13:33] Speaker B: I have a lot of friends who've been picking fallout back up, follow up.
[00:13:37] Speaker A: Follow up, back out.
[00:13:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Is that the new. The new. The new. The new game followed.
[00:13:44] Speaker A: And then I've been playing the new season of Diablo, of course, as I always been playing.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: Hell yeah.
[00:13:50] Speaker A: Hell yeah, indeed.
[00:13:51] Speaker B: Nice. Speaking of. Speaking of hell, he gets set to hell yeah. Jessica Priest sends him right there, just so upset that he's just a jerk. Shoots him right in the head.
[00:14:02] Speaker A: Al should have known, man. Like, she just loves shooting her partners in the head.
[00:14:05] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:14:05] Speaker A: Or burning them, whatever she does.
[00:14:07] Speaker B: Sal Bishop. Bishop here says it wouldn't be the last time Jessica Priest put down a fellow operative and kept quiet about it.
[00:14:15] Speaker A: I'd be interested to see what if they show that again in the newer continuity, because I don't think it'd be a sadistic. And she probably wouldn't, like, burn him and all that stuff. So, like, I just wonder. I wonder what the new continuity on that will be like if they show, like, if they'll have to show Jessica kill him in, like, a flashback or something.
[00:14:32] Speaker B: It'll probably be more. It'll probably be more like this where she thinks that she's got a job instead of, you know, getting off on the idea of offing people.
[00:14:43] Speaker A: Right. She's a little less crazy than she was in the nineties.
[00:14:47] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. She's a little bit more of an actual person now than she was in the nineties.
[00:14:52] Speaker A: Right. Like a real character. This get up's cool, too. I really like her suit here, the high tech, like.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: Yeah. With, like, the scarf. Yeah. And, like, the bulletproof plate.
[00:15:02] Speaker A: Yeah. Pretty cool.
[00:15:04] Speaker B: It is pretty great. And the pouches, like, a reasonable amount of pouches, the number of pouches, you.
[00:15:08] Speaker A: Would have some pouches.
[00:15:10] Speaker B: Her bullet sent him to hell, and now he's back, and we cut to.
[00:15:14] Speaker A: The present, basically, where we've got eviscerator and bishop going into this church, and.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: Viscerator is finally like, oh, is he finally done with his story?
[00:15:25] Speaker A: Like, jesus Christ.
[00:15:27] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:28] Speaker A: Mystery is, like, you know how many times I've died in these millennia I've been alive? It's really not that big a deal.
[00:15:32] Speaker B: And she's like, yeah, but how are you back? Are you some sort of spawn now? And Bishop says there are more circles than just the ape, than hell, and I'm very excited for us to explore that. Holy shit.
[00:15:45] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. That's this great little tease of, like, there's a lot of other stuff going on. He has a master somewhere in there.
[00:15:52] Speaker B: One of the things that makes this John layman run so excellent is he just, like, tosses off things that it's like, wait, wait, wait.
[00:15:59] Speaker A: That's a great idea. We're gonna talk about that. Yeah.
[00:16:01] Speaker B: I have a feeling it's gonna be like the. Like the. The original guest writer series where there's just. We're gonna get to scorched issue 312, and there's gonna be just like, ah, yeah. You remember when John Layman said three words back in, like, issue 28? Yeah. Yeah. That's what.
[00:16:18] Speaker A: That's what the whole plot's gonna be hinging on.
[00:16:21] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm here for it. I'm here for it.
[00:16:23] Speaker A: But what are they doing in this church, you know? What the heck are they going in there for?
[00:16:28] Speaker B: I don't know. It seems like they're hell people, that they shouldn't be allowed in a church, Johnny. But.
[00:16:32] Speaker A: But it says half an hour earlier, outside the same building we got the scorch.
[00:16:36] Speaker B: Yes. The. The main three, the trace caballeros. Johnny.
[00:16:42] Speaker A: Yep. Redeemer, Jessica, Mark. They're all in their civilian clothes, and they're gonna go do something. We're not exactly sure what.
[00:16:50] Speaker B: Yeah, I do like that they're working off of intel that medieval gave them, and, like, Jessica is giving this information to Mark, even though it's Mark's body that said the words.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: Right.
What could they be talking about? They said, I heard he's drinking again. Hmm.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:08] Speaker A: Do we know any alcoholic people that work in a church that are in the spawn universe?
[00:17:12] Speaker B: Never happened.
[00:17:14] Speaker A: I think there might be some. I think there might be one in particular.
I love this intro to haunt, though. It's really cool.
[00:17:21] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they. They go up, they send Mark into the confessional booth.
[00:17:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:17:25] Speaker B: Get in there to get. To draw out Daniel Kilgore. And Mark's like, yeah, no, no, no, I'm not gonna do that, but I need to talk to you and your dead brother. And then he's just like, the fuck you say, yeah. And starts to haunt out.
[00:17:40] Speaker A: I love how the original, like, haunt logo pops up. The thing is, the being his own is haunt.
[00:17:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
Mystic being created by the tethering of two souls, which this is. This is something we can go on. Maybe. Maybe there's other people who are tethered to other souls and they're more haunts.
[00:17:59] Speaker A: There could be. Could be a haint, a haunted hate.
[00:18:05] Speaker B: Well, if it's a haint, it can't cross. It can't cross water. So everybody's gonna have blue on the bottom of their. Their porch ceiling.
[00:18:14] Speaker A: What?
[00:18:15] Speaker B: That's. That's something they do in the south because hates can't cross over water. But they also were kind of dumb and can't tell positioning because, you know.
[00:18:24] Speaker A: What is a hate? I just made it because it sounded funny.
[00:18:26] Speaker B: A hank. A Hank is just another word for a ghost.
[00:18:29] Speaker A: Okay, so it's just a ghost.
[00:18:31] Speaker B: Yeah, just a ghost. Usually a ghost.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: So that's like, southern haunt would be a hank.
[00:18:35] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah, it would be a Hank. All right, well, he's got a. Like a. Like a wheat. A wheat sticking out of his mouth.
[00:18:42] Speaker A: Yeah, he's got, like a buckwheat sticking out. That'd be hilarious.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: Instead of being a priest, he's a. He's a. What are they called? A moonshiner.
Hell, yeah.
[00:18:53] Speaker A: He bonded with his dead bubba, who died.
Moonshine.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: Who died? Died in the stillsplosion.
[00:19:00] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:01] Speaker B: I used to work with a guy from Kentucky, and he was like, hell, yeah. You just drive down the back road. So those guys are selling their moonshot across just right there on the highway still. Yeah.
Apparently a well done moonshine is supposed to be excellent.
[00:19:16] Speaker A: Interesting. I never. I think I, like, tasted it. It's just like, woo.
[00:19:21] Speaker B: Yeah. I've actually. I've actually gotten to experience some well done moonshine, and it was like mouthfeel and actual flavor. It was great. It was great.
[00:19:33] Speaker A: Interesting.
[00:19:34] Speaker B: Apparently, if you have a license from the government to make jet fuel or airplane fuel, that's literally making moonshine, so.
[00:19:43] Speaker A: Oh, okay.
[00:19:45] Speaker B: So if you know anybody who works in the petroleum, the aviation petroleum industry, they can make you moonshine. Connection.
[00:19:52] Speaker A: Nice.
Not too shabby.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: Uh huh. But so haunt just, like, explodes out of the confessional all upset and being like, why are you here? And he's confronted by the scorched in their full regalia.
[00:20:07] Speaker A: There they are.
[00:20:08] Speaker B: Mm hmm.
[00:20:09] Speaker A: Maybe the first time. Last time we see him like this for a long time.
[00:20:12] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Oh, boy.
[00:20:14] Speaker A: If we go by the next issue.
[00:20:15] Speaker B: And then he's like, hey, you should.
You snuck up on me. Why'd you do that?
I could have hurt you.
[00:20:21] Speaker A: I don't work here.
[00:20:25] Speaker B: And Jessica's like, yeah, we'll know for next time.
[00:20:27] Speaker A: I'm trying to save people's souls.
[00:20:29] Speaker B: And Kurt's. Kurt's trying to kind of calm Daniel down, you know, Jessica's. Jessica's been like, hey, hey, hey, hey. We need your help. We need your help. And Hans says, I'm not. I'm nothing like you. I got nothing in common with you. I'm not a help person. I'm not a heaven person. What do you need from me?
[00:20:46] Speaker A: And Jessica's like, yo, look, I got black ops training like your brother had.
Mark and medieval are bonded, just like you. You and redeemer both men of God, but not in the conventional sense.
We have a lot in common, dude.
[00:21:06] Speaker B: Yeah. Jessica just, like, throws down the facts. She comes with the receipts and is like, hey, man, don't.
[00:21:12] Speaker A: Don't be saying that to me.
[00:21:14] Speaker B: Don't say stuff that you know you can't back up.
[00:21:16] Speaker A: Don't be telling tales out of school or out of church.
[00:21:20] Speaker B: Well, luckily, they're in church, so, you.
[00:21:22] Speaker A: Know, they're telling tales in church.
[00:21:24] Speaker B: He'll be forgiven.
[00:21:25] Speaker A: You can't curse. Have you ever cursed in a church, David? You ever said fuck in a church?
[00:21:30] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:21:31] Speaker A: Oh, my God. Just to, like, test it out.
[00:21:35] Speaker B: I actually think I might have said it aloud where everybody can hear while I was talking on a microphone at my father's funeral.
[00:21:42] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[00:21:43] Speaker B: Oh, no.
Everybody. Everybody probably could have guessed it was coming. Yeah, I have a foul mouth. I have a foul mouth. Sorry, mom.
But not sorry enough to stop.
[00:21:54] Speaker A: Sorry, mom. It's all those tv shows and movies. All those damn movies.
[00:21:59] Speaker B: The washing my mouth out with soap did not work.
[00:22:01] Speaker A: I never had that happen.
[00:22:03] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, a couple of. Couple of times, and then it didn't work. And so they were like, well, I guess what's the point?
[00:22:09] Speaker A: Yeah, it's wasting soap at this point.
[00:22:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
Soap. Expensive.
[00:22:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:16] Speaker B: I'm gonna tell you, you want a dish soap instead of, like a. Like a bath soap? You don't want the bar of soap. The bar of soap's got extra.
[00:22:25] Speaker A: That sounds disgusting.
[00:22:27] Speaker B: Yeah, all those fragrances make it bad.
And then, you know, medieval. Medieval is breaking down. What's going on? He says, an enemy of mine from my era has resurfaced. And he says, they will, we need to prepare. They will attack soon and then haunt ass house soon.
[00:22:48] Speaker A: And then we get the opening quote where it says, now, now.
And it's a bunch of horde of wolves.
[00:22:56] Speaker B: Yeah, the horde appears.
[00:22:57] Speaker A: Shadow beasts, they call them.
[00:23:00] Speaker B: Yeah. And then, you know, we get down. We get down. They get down to business. Johnny, to defeat the horde, they got to.
[00:23:07] Speaker A: They'll make a wolf out of you.
[00:23:09] Speaker B: Yeah. And Jessica Priest is just like fucking matrix shooting.
And Redeemer's out there just blasting a medieval's off big beam and haunt his squeebity. Squap squeebity squibity boop. He's shooting them with his goops, his.
[00:23:27] Speaker A: Haunt tendrils, whatever we're calling him, like, tendrils.
[00:23:31] Speaker B: And then it's where the beginning of the issue and now converge. Cause Bishop and Viscerator just like, start sauntering in. They're just watching the show.
[00:23:42] Speaker A: And then viscerator's like, why are you not killing them? And he's like, cause we're gonna play with them like a mouse before crush, like a cat does for a mouse before crushing it. Viscerator likes that.
[00:23:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
She's real excited about how much bishop enjoys the killing.
[00:23:58] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, they're a good team.
And Jessica's just blowing all these wolves away with her double guns.
[00:24:05] Speaker B: Yeah. And then she gets like half a second to stop and breathe and then she notices Bishop and she's like, no.
[00:24:12] Speaker A: And his shadow's like a big beast.
[00:24:14] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a big beast. It looks kind of like the shadow that Tim Curry from legend would throw a little bit. Yeah, his big old horns.
[00:24:24] Speaker A: And she sees Bishop.
[00:24:25] Speaker B: We get a nice little repeat of the panel where she shot Bishop in the head. It's a beautiful panel. I'm glad they reused it.
[00:24:33] Speaker A: Yeah, it's cool.
[00:24:34] Speaker B: So good.
She lunges for him, and Bishop's like, up, viscerator. We gotta go. Eviscerator is like, what? This woman? You're scared of this woman? And visor is like, no, no, no.
[00:24:46] Speaker A: Someone else is coming.
[00:24:47] Speaker B: So she's bringing, she's bringing. Hell with her.
We gotta go. He's like, we gotta go now. Get out of here. And they, they shadow blast out of there right before she spawn gets to them.
[00:24:59] Speaker A: They're gone.
[00:25:00] Speaker B: Uh huh. And then while Redeemer and medieval are back there still tussling with the horde, a new player shows up and says.
[00:25:08] Speaker A: Enough of this with a very special speech bubble that we know and love.
[00:25:12] Speaker B: Sure do. And then a single powerful necroplasmic blast swatch.
[00:25:18] Speaker A: Dissolves all the wolves, but leaves.
[00:25:22] Speaker B: Leaves the scorched, unscorched.
[00:25:24] Speaker A: Yeah, he knows how to do it.
[00:25:26] Speaker B: Yeah, he's. He knows his. He knows from hell power. Johnny, get a big scara.
[00:25:32] Speaker A: Cow. Cow.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: Then all of you, you need to come with me now.
And, uh, Spawn says, hey, I put you together, trained you for war.
War has come.
[00:25:45] Speaker A: And then it's a tease for spawn. 350, on sale next week.
[00:25:48] Speaker B: It's the little. It's the little information asterisk at the bottom. It says, see what spawn means?
[00:25:56] Speaker A: What the hell is he talking about?
[00:26:00] Speaker B: It's great. It's great.
[00:26:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:02] Speaker B: And then scorch skull to end the issue.
[00:26:06] Speaker A: Damn. Yeah. That is a whiz banger of an issue.
[00:26:11] Speaker B: Oh, man, it's so fun to watch this scorched team just go at it.
[00:26:17] Speaker A: Yeah. And get a little bit of background and, like, seeing, like, the old team. I love seeing, like, black ops Jessica and Al.
[00:26:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: Always fun.
[00:26:26] Speaker B: It's also fun to see that there's so much just, like, crammed into this issue. But it's not like wall of text. Like, it might even have more in it than the old wall of text issues.
[00:26:39] Speaker A: It just uses its storytelling very efficiently.
[00:26:41] Speaker B: Yeah. But it takes, like, a third of the time to read it. It's crazy.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:46] Speaker B: So good.
[00:26:47] Speaker A: We get a spawning ground.
[00:26:48] Speaker B: Sure do. 1st first one is a scorched cover. Black blank black cover sketch that is of Mister Albert Simmons himself. And it is. It is great.
[00:27:00] Speaker A: Done by Luke sketches.
[00:27:02] Speaker B: Mm hmm. Luke sketches. And Thomas is like, you know, I really like those black covers.
[00:27:07] Speaker A: Not too shabby.
[00:27:09] Speaker B: I wonder. I wonder if he brings that up every time there's one of those submitted because it was his idea to make the black ones or not.
[00:27:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:17] Speaker B: We should ask him if we ever get a chance.
[00:27:19] Speaker A: I'm sure we will.
[00:27:20] Speaker B: And then Jason, aka J. Mann, says that he loves the scorched. He says scorch 24 was a perfect issue.
[00:27:27] Speaker A: It was.
[00:27:28] Speaker B: It was. It was fantastic.
[00:27:30] Speaker A: I was the one at the bar, right?
[00:27:31] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was. Shit, dude. It was a great issue. We should go back and read that now. Let's now on to scorch 24.
[00:27:40] Speaker A: Now back to scorch 24.
We're supposed to be catching up, David. We're just gonna. Caught in a scorched loop. We have to break the loop.
[00:27:46] Speaker B: I mean, yeah, I was gonna make a never break the chain joke with chain gang, but I failed.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: That's tough. It's a lot of explaining.
[00:28:00] Speaker B: Onward. Jay says scorched has been his favorite title since day one, and it's been a very good one.
[00:28:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:07] Speaker B: Of the.
I might be. I actually might be changing my allegiance from Gunslinger to scorched now because, I mean, currently.
[00:28:14] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, maybe of.
[00:28:16] Speaker B: Of those four main titles, the three new ones, it's probably been the most consistent across the entire run so far.
[00:28:24] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:28:25] Speaker B: The high. The highs. Maybe not as high as some of the highs have been in Gunslinger and Kingspawn, but sure. But on average, just taking such a shift, since it's. Yeah, 350, it's not.
[00:28:36] Speaker A: It doesn't remind me of King Spawn. It's just like. It's like s'more spawn.
[00:28:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:42] Speaker A: You know, it's very similar to the spawn.
[00:28:46] Speaker B: It feels a little fillery. It feels a little bit like.
[00:28:49] Speaker A: It's a shame, because it never didn't feel like that before.
[00:28:52] Speaker B: Yeah. Because when we talked to Thomas Healy, he said that there was, you know, obviously, they had to keep that gap going between when they finished their. Their arc in King Spawn till it got caught up with 350, and it feels like it just hasn't taken off from then yet. It's still just kind of stasis.
[00:29:11] Speaker A: Right. Right.
But we'll see where it goes. You know, Tommy Farland's a busy man writing sam and twitch, that and gunslinger.
[00:29:20] Speaker B: And all these additional plots, and he's working on focus.
[00:29:24] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:29:25] Speaker B: Focus and all that.
[00:29:26] Speaker A: Damn.
[00:29:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Thomas Healy responds with, yeah. He says, you like the monolith? We got a monolith series coming out.
[00:29:34] Speaker A: They sure do.
[00:29:35] Speaker B: And he says, as far as reaper and soul crusher, keep your eyes on the books after Spawn 350 comes out.
[00:29:39] Speaker A: So I love Soul Crusher. I'd love to see him again.
[00:29:42] Speaker B: That'll be real fun. Well, we're excited to see Sergey again.
[00:29:46] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:29:48] Speaker B: And then you need more sponsor universe, Johnny.
[00:29:51] Speaker A: I mean, always.
[00:29:52] Speaker B: Always. Well, I mean, there's gonna be some more sponsor universe, apparently, the new you. The new you. You got that monstrous ad that we've been having.
This ad actually does make me want to go pick up the trade of trade number one of monstrous, because it looks pretty awesome. That. That weird, like, eyeball with the hair.
[00:30:12] Speaker A: Yeah. What the hell is that?
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Yeah. And then there's. There's a girl. A cat. And then a cat girl. And then.
Oh, the witcher. There's the witcher there.
[00:30:23] Speaker A: It looks a little bit like the witcher.
[00:30:25] Speaker B: There's, like a Gaia's version of cable all the way to the right there.
Yeah.
[00:30:31] Speaker A: I don't know much about monstrous. I don't know.
[00:30:33] Speaker B: I don't know. It looks. It looks pretty dope, though. We should probably get into it.
[00:30:36] Speaker A: Yeah. With that. With a fucking million other things I gotta get into.
I can't keep up with spawn, David. Like, I can't.
[00:30:44] Speaker B: It. It actually is getting a little difficult to remember. What a. What are we supposed to pick up this week? What are we reading? What's going on?
[00:30:52] Speaker A: Yeah, it's getting there.
[00:30:53] Speaker B: It's still a great time.
[00:30:54] Speaker A: No, I'm having a ball. But it's just like, I can't really. It kind of limits my collecting of other comics. Cause I'm just trying to, like, keep up with spawn or my reading time. I only have a certain amount. Reading time.
[00:31:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:08] Speaker A: I don't know. But then we got a demon slayer toy ad.
[00:31:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:11] Speaker A: Another thing, another property I don't know much about.
That's the issue that scores 26, baby.
[00:31:17] Speaker B: Scores 26. Yeah, it is.
[00:31:35] Speaker A: Next up, we got the next issue. We're going right from 26 to 27. It's just so action packed. You gotta keep going.
[00:31:41] Speaker B: Yeah, it's great. It's like the end on the back of issue 26. There's the advertisement for scorch 27. And it's just. I move over half an inch, and there's the actual. Ah, I'm seeing double Johnny.
[00:31:54] Speaker A: There's the actual scorch 27 double vision. And I got double vision. Cause there's two. Count em, two covers.
[00:32:02] Speaker B: Whoa.
[00:32:03] Speaker A: So I got double vision.
[00:32:05] Speaker B: I don't. I don't even have to ask you which one you have then, do I?
[00:32:08] Speaker A: I got the one with Jessica priest stepping on you.
[00:32:10] Speaker B: Hell, yeah. Hell, yeah. That von Randall cover.
[00:32:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:32:13] Speaker B: Oh, man. She is just. She's just chilling. She is just like. I've never seen anyone so relaxed to be surrounded by so much weaponry.
[00:32:23] Speaker A: I know. Is that like a pillar that's been blown to hell behind her? What is that?
[00:32:27] Speaker B: Yeah, it looks like a wall. Because it's like rebar.
[00:32:30] Speaker A: Yeah, it's like rebar. Yeah, it's like a wall that's just been blown to hell.
[00:32:33] Speaker B: It's like she's. She's hanging out in the original bullet time lobby from Matrix.
[00:32:37] Speaker A: Yeah, b basically.
[00:32:39] Speaker B: Yeah, it just looks like she's waiting for the bus, though.
Wow.
[00:32:43] Speaker A: Looks nice and relaxed. Then there's also a bjorn barrens, which is a mister haunt.
[00:32:48] Speaker B: A mister haunt. And he's, he's, he definitely is haunt. Gooped. He is gooped up.
[00:32:55] Speaker A: He's goop pilled. He slimed me.
[00:32:57] Speaker B: Look at the, look at all that.
[00:32:59] Speaker A: He's very, very good texture on him.
[00:33:00] Speaker B: I wonder, I wonder if, if I'm gonna take this cover as headcanon if when haunt walks around, he just like leaves little goopy footprints.
He might like, everybody can always track haunt because of the footprints he leaves.
[00:33:16] Speaker A: It's like a little marsh. It's like marshmallow bits.
It's like marshmallow icing.
[00:33:22] Speaker B: No. Yeah, marshmallow. It's like, because it's like marshmallow fluffy.
[00:33:25] Speaker A: Yes. Like marshmallow fluff.
[00:33:27] Speaker B: That's what it is.
[00:33:28] Speaker A: Yeah, I imagine that's what his tendrils have the consistency of until he like wants to make them harder.
[00:33:33] Speaker B: Could you, could you imagine getting hit by some marshmallows?
[00:33:38] Speaker A: He's slapping you around with it. Yeah, yeah, that's the boring barons cover. Nice 3d haunt his stubble. I could use a little more stubble.
[00:33:47] Speaker B: Yeah, he does. He looks like he's too acquainted with.
[00:33:50] Speaker A: Yeah, he's a little more stubble on there. We like our haunt nice and stubborn.
[00:33:53] Speaker B: We know, we know. He doesn't like blades.
[00:33:55] Speaker A: He doesn't like knives.
[00:33:56] Speaker B: No, thank you.
He would, he would never be, uh, twitch would never be able to catch him unawares like he did Sam.
[00:34:03] Speaker A: Oh, where he shaved him. Yeah, he was like, no, no, no.
I got pinned to the wall by a million knives by my girlfriend. So I don't shave anymore.
[00:34:13] Speaker B: Somehow I had a million knives.
[00:34:15] Speaker A: That's my head cannon. And that's what happened. That's why he always has stubble.
[00:34:19] Speaker B: Well, let's, uh, let's, let's shave away this cover and get right, uh, right.
[00:34:24] Speaker A: Into, okay, should I get out some shaving cream and I'll pour it all.
[00:34:27] Speaker B: Over the COVID Yeah, you gotta, you gotta strap that blade and you're just some, we should have some asmr of you. You giving haunt a shave?
[00:34:37] Speaker A: I don't know about that. That sounds like something people might be into a little too much.
[00:34:42] Speaker B: Hey, whatever boosts the listens, Johnny.
[00:34:44] Speaker A: It's true.
[00:34:45] Speaker B: Yeah, but, yeah, so we gotta give credit where credit is due. And I have a feeling we could literally probably just copy paste your cover in the credits from earlier. But let's go ahead and give them another round because they deserve it. We got script plop by John Layman. With additional script by Todd McFarlane.
[00:35:07] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:35:08] Speaker B: Solid team art by Steven Segovia. Hella good. Robert Nugent. Back for the COVID or the colors? Andrew design. Doing the lettering again. Dunn covered the covers. And then we got Todd McFarlane and Thomas Healy as creative director and editor in chief, respectively. Thomas McFarlane and Todd Healy.
[00:35:28] Speaker A: Todd Healy.
[00:35:29] Speaker B: Todd Healy. And then previously in the scorched Nyx has ascended to the throne of hell and banished Spahn and the scorched earth. Jessica and the team now find themselves powerless.
[00:35:43] Speaker A: No, no.
[00:35:45] Speaker B: Helpless.
[00:35:48] Speaker A: Not really. Previously in the score. It's really previously in Spawn's universe.
[00:35:52] Speaker B: In the new you.
[00:35:53] Speaker A: It's previously in the new you. Cause that's not what happened in the last issue of the scores.
[00:35:57] Speaker B: We just read it previously at Spawn U. Nick's graduated and decided to blow up the university and decided to ruin everyone's day. Could you imagine if they're, oh, man. They should probably, they should make Spawn you and have, like, it be the, the hell. Like, the hell college. So we've got, like, the students learning to be hell spawns.
Like Harry Potter, only with hell people.
[00:36:24] Speaker A: Right.
It's funny you mentioned Spawn you, because I was talking about the new you versus spawns universe to the guys at challengers. And they're like, we're just confused because everything. Spawn, colon, Sam and twitch files. Like, that's how they, like, um, title it, but it's not actually on the COVID So it's just very confusing, because it's like, you have to figure out which, because everything's under spawn, colon, whatever the actual title is. Like, spawn, colon, monolith. It's just funny. They were comic book biz. They were complaining.
[00:36:51] Speaker B: Yeah, that sounds, oh, I mean, it sounds like maybe they heard, uh, they heard Pat talking about how he, uh, he organizes all this, all of them. He's like, I don't care what they start with. They're all under spawn, so you can find them.
[00:37:03] Speaker A: Right? Yeah, exactly. They're all spawn just for me.
[00:37:06] Speaker B: Maybe. It's also so that way people reading the, the order forms aren't like, what the fuck is this? Right. Yeah.
[00:37:13] Speaker A: Misery. What's misery?
Right, exactly. And that's why they do it, obviously.
[00:37:18] Speaker B: Yeah. I can't. As confusing as comics themselves are, I can only imagine comics business itself.
[00:37:24] Speaker A: Can you imagine trying to order comics? Like, people, like, adding comics and pre order and, like, all covers? Sounds like such a headache.
[00:37:32] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, I have a hard enough time trying to figure out which comics I need to buy from. EBay that have already, you know, come out and been around and everybody knows about them, much less new ones.
[00:37:46] Speaker A: Yeah, a lot of work, man.
[00:37:49] Speaker B: My brain is tired just thinking about it.
[00:37:52] Speaker A: But, yeah, we. We open up here on, like, a little. Kind of like just a flashback.
It just says, a few months earlier, this is what the scorched fighting would have looked like.
[00:38:03] Speaker B: Not even a flashback. This is. This is the daydream, Johnny.
[00:38:06] Speaker A: It was a daydream.
[00:38:07] Speaker B: A daydream. Because it says, a few months earlier, this is what would have happened if Jessica's assassins came or if the assassins came after. All right, this is just like a.
[00:38:14] Speaker A: What if this is like, what it normally would have been like?
[00:38:18] Speaker B: Yeah, it's got medieval. Medieval sword in the guy through the stomach, and Jessica just like.
Like ripping a guy's heart out through his bulletproof vest. It's great.
[00:38:29] Speaker A: Yeah, pretty awesome. This is a pretty bloody issue.
[00:38:32] Speaker B: Yeah. But this didn't happen, because several months ago, she spawned and medieval lost their powers. And now we see what really happened in the world of the assassination attempt.
[00:38:44] Speaker A: So they're powerless. So now they just kind of like, well, you know, we're powerless. We might as well try to live a normal life for a little bit.
[00:38:49] Speaker B: Mm hmm.
[00:38:51] Speaker A: And so they go get some ice cream in Central park.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like. But, man, that looks like a good time. I'd like to go get some ice cream in Central park.
[00:39:00] Speaker A: Yeah, I wouldn't mind.
[00:39:02] Speaker B: I wouldn't mind.
[00:39:02] Speaker A: It's a nice, beautiful spring or summer day.
[00:39:05] Speaker B: Yeah. And they're like, hey, you know what? Maybe we can be regular people again. You know, the health. The hell powers are gone. Let's just be us.
[00:39:12] Speaker A: Let's chill.
[00:39:14] Speaker B: Nope, nope.
[00:39:16] Speaker A: Get sniped. And they're sitting there and then boom, she's just shot right in the shoulder.
[00:39:20] Speaker B: Right in the shoulder. And her costume wasn't there to protect her, so she gets the full brunt of it. Oh, boy.
[00:39:25] Speaker A: Damn.
[00:39:26] Speaker B: And they both. They both dropped their ice creams.
[00:39:28] Speaker A: Oh, no, that's the real tragedy.
[00:39:31] Speaker B: This is. This is very. The opening of that. What was not Jack Reacher, it was a Tom Cruise movie. Yeah, about where he's. He's like in the wind.
[00:39:48] Speaker A: Mission impossible?
[00:39:50] Speaker B: No, not mission impossible. And this. This. This dude.
Oh, boy. What is it? Fucking. Hold on. Gonna have to reach Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise. What movies has Tom Cruise been in? Has he been in anything good?
[00:40:04] Speaker A: I mean. Yeah, I still know what you're.
[00:40:06] Speaker B: No. Jack. Yeah, it is Jack Reacher.
[00:40:08] Speaker A: The only other thing he's been in recently says Mission Impossible is Jack Reacher.
[00:40:11] Speaker B: Yeah, this is. This is literally the opening to his first Jack Reacher movie. Cause that guy shows up and just, like, randomly shoots people along the riverwalk in Pittsburgh while they're eating ice cream. And it's like, ah, no, don't shoot.
[00:40:25] Speaker A: People eating ice cream. Ice cream's a very special thing.
[00:40:28] Speaker B: Yeah, man, ice cream is great.
[00:40:30] Speaker A: Yeah. I love having ice cream for dinner.
[00:40:33] Speaker B: I have a friend who just went to go visit his parents in Oklahoma, and he's like, first stop, Brahms. And I was like, oh, Brahms?
[00:40:40] Speaker A: I went to Brahms last time I was in Oklahoma.
[00:40:42] Speaker B: Man. I fucking love Brahms.
[00:40:44] Speaker A: Yeah, that's good. I got an orange sherbet cone.
[00:40:46] Speaker B: Ooh, nice. Nice. I get that. I always get the tuxedo sundae.
[00:40:51] Speaker A: Yeah. And then I got a burger, too. Yeah, Brahms is great, man.
[00:40:54] Speaker B: Remember those bag of burgers? Five of them for $5?
[00:40:56] Speaker A: Yeah, that was a great deal.
[00:40:57] Speaker B: I used to be able to down all five of those by myself in 30 minutes. Damn, those are big ass burgers, too. They're like quarter pounders.
[00:41:05] Speaker A: Yeah, they were big.
[00:41:07] Speaker B: Yeah. So Jessica's down, and Mark is like, ah. And out of habit, he reaches for the medieval helmet and starts to put it on.
[00:41:15] Speaker A: Luckily, because they shoot him in the head and it bounces right off.
[00:41:18] Speaker B: Yeah. So he doesn't transform into medieval, but yet that old ass knight has saved his life once again.
[00:41:25] Speaker A: Yep. The helmet came in handy.
[00:41:27] Speaker B: Yeah. And so they're like, ah, we gotta get out of here. So they start limping away. They get. They get out of the open of the park and head to a place not far from what? From where, you know, rat City used to be.
[00:41:42] Speaker A: Hmm. Love that little shout out.
[00:41:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Little. Little alleys. We love a spawn in the alley.
[00:41:49] Speaker A: Go to spawn in the alley. Love a shout out to Rat City. So that's nice.
[00:41:52] Speaker B: Yeah, we do. And at this .2, things are clear, Johnny. One, everything is different now. Two, the scorched are being hunted. Dun dun dun.
[00:42:01] Speaker A: I love this transition, though. Cause then it goes. Weeks later, the scorched were still being hunted.
[00:42:06] Speaker B: Yeah. So they don't. They don't get taken so easily. And then it's. It's haunt Spider manning away from this helicopter that's both shooting at him and has like.
[00:42:17] Speaker A: And dropping dudes.
Yeah. And like a million missiles. And he's just like, zoom, zoom, zoom.
[00:42:23] Speaker B: This is. This is great. This is great.
[00:42:25] Speaker A: Yeah. Great panel. They're shooting up that church.
[00:42:28] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:42:28] Speaker A: No one fucks with a church in my town. Nobody steps on a church in my town.
[00:42:33] Speaker B: He's a priest.
[00:42:34] Speaker A: Yeah. It's gonna drive me crazy.
[00:42:36] Speaker B: Yeah. They're all. They're all loosed ins, and the agency doesn't like loose ends. And we. I guess this is where we learned that the agency, which is a covert organization that Jessica priest used to work for, is back.
[00:42:51] Speaker A: Yes. And Kilgore used to work for him, too.
[00:42:55] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's right. Jessica Priest mentioned that in the last issue.
[00:42:58] Speaker A: Yep. Hmm.
[00:43:00] Speaker B: Hmm. It's almost. It's almost as if there's continuity here, Johnny.
Yeah. Then, uh, there's. Scorched is still running away. He's. He's leading these guys to a specific spot till. Until, you know, he's got them right where he wants them. And then he attacks the helicopter.
[00:43:19] Speaker A: Then he tables the turn or turns the table. One of the two.
[00:43:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
He does the thing. That's what he does.
[00:43:25] Speaker A: He jumps on there, rips the guy out of the cockpit, and, like, throws him out.
[00:43:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:43:29] Speaker A: Brings down the whole helicopter. Pretty badass.
[00:43:31] Speaker B: It is. It is pretty great. Oh, man.
[00:43:34] Speaker A: Jessica Marker is like, watching from a hotel room just, like, seeing it crash. Like, nice work.
[00:43:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
And then we get a nice little information recap about, you know, remember how we said that all these hell people were powerless? Well, do you also remember how we. We've been very clear that haunt is neither heaven nor hell powered? So he's. You know, he's still kicking it. He's literally the world's only superhero at this. This point.
[00:43:58] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:43:59] Speaker B: And then Mark's over there, man in. The. Man in the computers, and, like, his. He's like, man. I was excited when medieval finally left my brain so I could think again, but now it's like my. It's like, you know. Yeah. Like, I can't think.
[00:44:22] Speaker A: Yeah, he's all. He's all foggy.
[00:44:25] Speaker B: I was. I was. I was in character there, Johnny. I became Mark frozen.
[00:44:28] Speaker A: Okay, I thought you couldn't think of the words.
[00:44:30] Speaker B: I thought.
[00:44:30] Speaker A: You're having a stroke.
Yeah. He's just like.
[00:44:35] Speaker B: He's been.
[00:44:35] Speaker A: He's been so used to being merged with medieval for so long without him. It's just, like, weird for him.
[00:44:40] Speaker B: Yeah. It's like he's lost in the woods.
[00:44:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:43] Speaker B: And it's getting worse. It just goes like, I told you we'd find out what happened to him, but we got work to do. And then, you know, it cuts down that. She's like, I'm gonna. I'm gonna see how haunt is doing. Is he doing okay? And Haunt has done very well.
Yeah, he's got that. That action pose of. He's, you know, he's. He's, like, just finished stabbing his last guy, and he's surrounded by flames, and he's covered in blood, and he's just like, yeah, bring it, motherfucker.
It's a great image.
[00:45:13] Speaker A: Yeah, pretty badass.
[00:45:15] Speaker B: Haunt's a cool ass dude. And then, you know, after they've confirmed that haunt's done what he's supposed to do, she makes a call, and she makes the call to Redeemer, who is doing basically the same thing haunt was doing, only on the other side of town, the other side of Paris. Is this Paris?
I'm pretty sure that's the Eiffel Tower in the background. Oh, yeah.
[00:45:36] Speaker A: It looks like Paris to me. Yeah, it's Paris.
[00:45:38] Speaker B: And medieval is similarly completely covered in blood.
[00:45:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:45:45] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:45:46] Speaker A: Or Redeemer, you mean.
[00:45:48] Speaker B: Yeah. Who did I say?
[00:45:49] Speaker A: Medieval?
[00:45:50] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Redeemer. Oh, man.
[00:45:52] Speaker A: So he's just walking. He ain't got no wings. He's just walking around like a normal ass man.
[00:45:57] Speaker B: How dare he?
[00:45:58] Speaker A: How dare he?
[00:45:59] Speaker B: And then, you know, Jessica and haunt show up to where Redeemer is, and Jessica's like, please tell me you left one alive. And he's like, yeah, he ain't got long, though.
[00:46:10] Speaker A: Shit.
[00:46:11] Speaker B: And Jessica picks him up and is like, who sent you?
He's like, I have more than one, boss. This is how we.
He says, it's the agency. And, you know, Han says he used to be a part of it, but it's been disbanded. And this Diane guy's like, it's been reactivated. Haha.
[00:46:30] Speaker A: With a new director.
[00:46:31] Speaker B: Yeah. Jessica Priest is like, who's the director? And then it cuts to. We see Jessica Priest as she normally is. To Jessica Priest, as seen through the bio scanning contact lens that this goon is wearing.
[00:46:47] Speaker A: Yeah. And it's like scanning all the scorch members, getting all their info on them.
[00:46:51] Speaker B: And we meet ourselves.
A new operative of the agency, Charlotte Lind.
[00:46:59] Speaker A: This is her baby. This is her brainchild to, like, equip you. Some guy with a bio reader camera.
[00:47:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:06] Speaker A: And gps tracking chip.
[00:47:08] Speaker B: Yeah, she's. She's almost Amanda Waller in this moment.
[00:47:11] Speaker A: Yes. Basically, she's.
[00:47:12] Speaker B: She's. She's extra Amanda waller in this moment, actually, because we learned that the gps tracker that she put in her people also is an exploding device.
[00:47:22] Speaker A: Boom. Blows them right up.
[00:47:25] Speaker B: Yeah, just that head gets exploded. Yeah.
[00:47:28] Speaker A: It's just like, this is such a bloody. It's just blood. Everywhere in the. She was just soaked.
[00:47:33] Speaker B: Yeah, it's, uh. I felt a little awkward reading this one on the, on the train too, because I didn't remember there being so much blood. And I was like, ah, yeah, I.
[00:47:43] Speaker A: Guess we can get hurt and die. There's gonna be a lot more blood, cuz uh, you can actually get hurt. They're not wearing these magical costumes, so they lost their powers.
[00:47:50] Speaker B: Yeah. And then, um, you know, so Jessica's just standing there with this headless corpse and her haunts, like, now what? She's like, well, we find this agency, and I, like, this is what would.
[00:48:03] Speaker A: Happen to Anakin Skywalker if he would have run away from Watto.
Because he goes and they blow you up. Boom.
[00:48:12] Speaker B: Oh, man. There's, we pull back and see Redeemer and haunt and Jessica standing there and just like, all the body parts that are just laying around.
Laying around. Does that, does that mean that there's probably a part of Tatooine that just has a whole bunch of random slave body parts lying around?
[00:48:32] Speaker A: Probably just like on the outskirts of most esMo, they're trying to run away.
[00:48:35] Speaker B: Oh, geez. Star wars universe is a dark place, Johnny.
[00:48:38] Speaker A: It really is.
[00:48:39] Speaker B: When you think about it, it's a little fucked up.
[00:48:41] Speaker A: Yeah. Like we were talking about on the Star wars episode, when they're like, they never go into the ethics of the cloning. They're just like, yeah, it's clones. It's fine.
[00:48:47] Speaker B: Yeah, they're clothes. Yeah, let's send them to their deaths.
[00:48:50] Speaker A: Let's do it.
[00:48:52] Speaker B: Uh huh. And then, you know, then we see Jessica, or not Jessica Lynn, Charlotte Lynn. Just walking down a very brightly lit. Fluorescent. Brightly lit with fluorescence. Hallway. Whatever I was trying to say. There a hallway in an office building. She's walking down it and she's like, I've got the data. It'll fast track my career. She's like, I gotta impress my new boss man.
So she, she shows up in his office and, you know, he's smoking a cigar in the shadows, so we don't know who he is yet. And he's like, he's like, how many agents did we lose to get this information? And she's like, yeah, you know, some. Well, we got the info. He's like, excellent, excellent. He's like, he's Mister burnsing over there, basically.
[00:49:38] Speaker A: And they're just like, they're like, nice little setup here for the reveal where it's like, oh, no. Do you mind if I call you Charlotte? Do you mind? Oh, please don't call me Mister win. You can call me Jason.
[00:49:49] Speaker B: Of course, mister director. And no need to stand on formality. Oh, man. Yeah, turn the page. There he is, Jason Wynn in his full, his full glory. He's got all his eyes back. He's.
He's not, he's not disrupted. Disruptor. Oh, man. I always forget that his name doesn't start with an r. He's back in.
[00:50:08] Speaker A: A suit working in the office. Yeah, with a big old stogie.
[00:50:12] Speaker B: He's looking very much like Wolverine.
[00:50:15] Speaker A: Doesn't like Wolverine. It's either Stogie or the biggest cone joint that ever existed. That'd be hilarious. He's smoking those big cone joints.
[00:50:22] Speaker B: I mean, I mean, if he's, uh, if. If it get. If it gets revealed later on that he is in the pocket of mother Gaia, it might be the biggest cone joint in the world.
[00:50:33] Speaker A: There might be.
[00:50:34] Speaker B: That's a. That's got to be.
Yeah.
[00:50:39] Speaker A: Would guy want you smoking weed or would she be mad because you're burning up leaves?
Think about that.
[00:50:46] Speaker B: Yeah, well, I'm. Yeah, I don't know. It's a good question. It's a good question.
[00:50:51] Speaker A: She probably likes to get high. Gaia loves to get stoned.
[00:50:55] Speaker B: She always is, Johnny. She is the stone.
[00:50:57] Speaker A: She is the stone. She's the stone and the weeds. She's all of it.
[00:51:02] Speaker B: She's everything. Yeah. And scorch skull, the end of the issue. It's great. It's great having Jason win back. He's back to his old.
Maybe he'll have his old Steven Seagal body back too.
[00:51:14] Speaker A: Yeah, he'll be fighting some, going to.
[00:51:16] Speaker B: The danger room, be beating up ninjas for lunch.
Yeah, it'd be great.
[00:51:23] Speaker A: I always liked Jason Nguyen. Good to have him back.
[00:51:26] Speaker B: Since the hell in heaven powers are all, since the whole world is a dead zone, we don't have to worry about him disappearing for two days and not knowing what's going on.
[00:51:34] Speaker A: Nope. Yeah, that'd be funny. If they bring that back, he becomes Redeemer.
[00:51:37] Speaker B: He forgets. He forgets all over again.
[00:51:40] Speaker A: Oh, shit.
[00:51:43] Speaker B: Yeah. And then we get a. We get another spawning grounds. Mailbag.
[00:51:46] Speaker A: Another letters. Yeah, double letters.
We get first one from Ryan P.
Who basically says, thank you for keeping the titles affordable.
And you can't wait to see how 350 affects everything. And he attached a sketchy did of a homage to a famous Batman cover from Todd with the cape. And it's gunslinger holding Jessica. So pretty cool.
[00:52:09] Speaker B: Yeah, that's pretty great.
[00:52:11] Speaker A: Then there's another letter from Gavin who's 15 years old in Edmonton, Alberta. And he's been. He had to beg his parents to get him to read Spawn, which is funny. He says, like, you have no idea how hard it was.
[00:52:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:23] Speaker A: He had to fight his parents to let him read it.
[00:52:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:26] Speaker A: He's doing some awesome fan art. He really loves spawn, so it's good to see. Big fan.
[00:52:31] Speaker B: This is. This is amazing art.
[00:52:34] Speaker A: Yeah. For a 15 year old, I was like, holy.
[00:52:36] Speaker B: Holy shit.
It's very good. And Thomas Healy is very taken by this overt kill art.
[00:52:44] Speaker A: It's a good overkill.
[00:52:45] Speaker B: Yeah, it's great.
[00:52:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:48] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:49] Speaker A: The ads for the same ads, pretty much more spawns. Universe, monstrous ad, we get a different toy ad. We get. Instead of Demon Hunter or demon Slayer, we get Warhammer.
[00:53:00] Speaker B: Forty K. Forty K.
So exciting. Look at that.
Is that a blood angel there?
[00:53:07] Speaker A: I don't know anything about Warhammer.
[00:53:09] Speaker B: I think that. I think that guy on the right is a blood angel. Okay.
[00:53:12] Speaker A: That would make sense.
[00:53:13] Speaker B: I know. I know a little bit about it.
It's fun. Warhammer. It's cool.
[00:53:19] Speaker A: People love to play it.
[00:53:20] Speaker B: Yeah. People love to paint the miniatures. Yeah. So that's scorch number 27.
[00:53:26] Speaker A: Shouting 27.
[00:53:27] Speaker B: Lucky number, man.
Johnny, we gotta. We gotta rate some puppies.
[00:53:35] Speaker A: We gotta rate the puppies.
[00:53:37] Speaker B: Yeah, we do.
[00:53:40] Speaker A: I think I'm gonna rate them. I don't know. Like, together, they're almost like. It's hard to keep them separated in my mind after reading them together.
[00:53:46] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. It is hard to keep them separated, even though. Even though there is obviously a massive gulf between them in the form of spawn.
[00:53:54] Speaker A: Right. But it just does flow well into each other.
[00:53:57] Speaker B: It's a nice little. They, like, calibrated either side of the massive event very well. Yeah, I would be. Absolutely. Ha. I'm gonna give them both the same. The same number at least. Yeah. I'd be happy rating them together if you'd like to do that.
[00:54:13] Speaker A: I mean, I'm gonna give them both five, but I'm gonna give them five.
I don't know. Do you know? You want to give it a second?
[00:54:23] Speaker B: Yeah, I know what I'm gonna give this.
[00:54:25] Speaker A: Okay.
Go for it.
[00:54:28] Speaker B: All right, well. Oh, man. I'm going. So, I mean, as we've discussed this entire time, writing. Excellent.
So good. It's a little unfair how good this John Layman is at writing this. It's phenomenal. Great writing. The art is fantastic. The story itself is just so, so much fun and so good. I can't give this anything other then five horny shadows. Johnny.
[00:54:53] Speaker A: Five horny shadows. All right. From Bishop.
[00:54:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Five horny bishop shadows.
[00:55:00] Speaker A: I'm going to give it five giant cone joints.
[00:55:05] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:55:06] Speaker A: Because you want to sit there and smoke it up. Is that what you're giving both of them?
[00:55:10] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, yeah, that's. That's my one. My one for both of them.
[00:55:13] Speaker A: Me too. Five giant Jason Wayne cone joints that he's smoking at the end of 27.
[00:55:18] Speaker B: Hell yeah.
[00:55:19] Speaker A: Cause you gotta roll these up and.
[00:55:20] Speaker B: Smoke them and then you forget a little bit what you've read. So you read them again and you're.
[00:55:24] Speaker A: Like, oh, shit, this is good. Yeah, no, they're both excellent. They're just, like, so action packed. You can tell, like, how fast took us to cover them. They're just like, they move, but they're not. To say that they're, like, short or, like, lacking anything. It's just like, they're action packed and they're so efficient with their storytelling. Oh, yeah.
John Langman's just very good at that. And I love, love the black ops stuff with Jessica and Al and all them. It's cool to see that. And I just like seeing the team together in 26 and then on the other side of 350, seeing them together, but they don't have the powers. This is going to be interesting in 27. So, yeah, like you said, they really do a good job of, like, butting up against 350 and, like, having that in the middle there.
[00:56:03] Speaker B: Yeah. So it'll be, it'll be real fun to see how they all, like, cope with the shared trauma of having to undergo the war for the. The throne of hell and then, you know, the loss that they have on the other side of it.
Right. Since they were. They were, like, becoming a very cohesive core group, those three. Redeemer, Jessica and Mark, like, how that relationship buoys them through what they're going through because they're a great team and they work great together. And I like that they care about each other and they kick ass together very well.
Yeah, it's good.
[00:56:43] Speaker A: No, they're both awesome. Like, I mean, can't praise enough. And they get. Kill's still going strong or a couple issues past this right now and it's still been amazing.
I might read them after this just because I got him so fresh in my mind.
[00:56:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. It's.
You can do so much worse than just sitting down to read some John Layman scorched, y'all.
[00:57:05] Speaker A: It's a lot of fun.
[00:57:07] Speaker B: Like, if you're ever bored, just be like, oh, hey, I've got John Layman scorched. Fuck, yeah. I'm not bored anymore.
[00:57:14] Speaker A: Read that.
[00:57:15] Speaker B: It's also, like, invigorating. I love these issues, Johnny. Like I said before, if we could just become a scorched podcast, then I'd be fine with it.
[00:57:24] Speaker A: I mean, that's. Taglines made the scorched be with you.
[00:57:26] Speaker B: You know, it's always been. It's always been there, Johnny.
[00:57:29] Speaker A: It's always been right there.
[00:57:31] Speaker B: Right in front of our faces.
[00:57:32] Speaker A: Yeah. Scores is probably my favorite ongoing right now, too.
[00:57:35] Speaker B: So it's. It's hard to beat. It's hard to beat. You know what else is hard to beat, Johnny?
[00:57:42] Speaker A: Our friends on Instagram.
[00:57:43] Speaker B: Our friends on Instagram. Yeah.
[00:57:45] Speaker A: And we have one that was featured in this issue.
[00:57:47] Speaker B: Yeah, we do.
[00:57:48] Speaker A: Featured in issue 26 of scorch in the mail bag.
It is at Luke's sketches on Instagram. At Luke's dot sketches.
[00:57:57] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. And he does art that we like a lot. Johnny, very prominently here up at the top of his page. Darth maul.
[00:58:06] Speaker A: Yay.
[00:58:08] Speaker B: The. The dathomiri himself.
Also, Karen slaughter from something is killing the children, which, if you aren't reading something, is killing the children.
Give it a shot, especially if you like spawn.
Excellent. Yeah, yeah, he does. He's, you know, it's literally right there on the tin, Johnny. His name is Luke. He sketches.
[00:58:32] Speaker A: He's got Gollum, medieval spawn, gunslinger.
[00:58:34] Speaker B: Spawn, an emperor palpatine, palps, man. He's got. He's got, like, dual wielding. Dual wielding gunslinger. And he's got some nice height on that hat. So he's doing it. He's doing it right. Lots of teenage mutant Ninja Turtles, which. Thank you.
[00:58:52] Speaker A: Love that.
[00:58:53] Speaker B: It's very good. Got Princess Leia. We got bride of Frankenstein. We got Godzilla, we got pinhead Johnny. This guy is. This guy is mining our brains for material. Yeah, absolutely. Got nosferatu, the old guy.

[01:00:37] Speaker A: Are you excited to see what happens? Have you been enjoying this John Lehman run? Like, did you prefer the Sean Lewis stuff or, like, just, you know, curious what you think about it?
[01:00:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:00:46] Speaker A: So hit us up about the scorch.
[01:00:48] Speaker B: Yeah. They've gone from, they've gone literally from, like, X Men to the bat family because, you know, X Men are all powerful and the bat family are all just people throwing bat shaped shit around.
[01:00:58] Speaker A: Yep. And now they've gone from one to the other. Yeah.
[01:01:00] Speaker B: Basically.
So it would be. It would be hilarious if they start being like, you know, we should make. We should make throwing stars in the.
[01:01:08] Speaker A: Shape of bats, y'all, and live in a cave.

[01:01:39] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a good time.
[01:01:41] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:01:41] Speaker B: So, Johnny, what scorched issues do you want to read for the next time?
[01:01:48] Speaker A: Well, I would say 28, 29, but we can't do only scorched.
[01:01:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:01:53] Speaker A: We must spread the spawns universe love around with you.
[01:01:57] Speaker B: With 19 ongoing titles.
[01:01:58] Speaker A: 19 ongoing titles is spreading a lot of love. So what we're doing right now, guys, is I know we're doing some classic spawns. Sorry for jumping around, but we're basically getting pretty far behind on some of these modern things like these were coming out in February and March or March and April. No, February and March. So we're a little bit behind. So what we're gonna do is we do quick few catch ups on some of these new stuff. So we did two scorches here, 26, 27. Next week we're gonna do spawn, and we're gonna do 351 and 352. So two after 350 just to kind of move things along a little bit.
[01:02:32] Speaker B: I'm so excited, Johnny. You know why?
[01:02:34] Speaker A: Why?
[01:02:35] Speaker B: Those are the Bret booth on main title issues.
[01:02:38] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. We get to it.
[01:02:39] Speaker B: Fuck, yeah.
[01:02:40] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[01:02:41] Speaker B: So good.
[01:02:42] Speaker A: So good. That'll be exciting. Yeah.
[01:02:44] Speaker B: Double Brett Booth week.
[01:02:45] Speaker A: Double Brett booth week. Yeah. So through spawn 361 and Spawn 362 comes through the fallout for the big 350. And we'll read about that and kind of get caught up a little. Little bit.
[01:02:55] Speaker B: It's gonna be real good. Yeah, it's gonna be excellent. I'm gonna be here for it. You should be here for it too.
[01:03:02] Speaker A: I'll be here too.
[01:03:03] Speaker B: Yeah. You know what else we should be here for, Johnny?

Okay, I may have actually done that.
[01:03:33] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[01:03:35] Speaker B: Let me tell you, strawberries, squirrels love them. So many strawberries. Yeah. Yeah. They literally sell bags that you put your. You can put your strawberry plants in designed for squirrels to not get into.

[01:03:50] Speaker B: They're just hungry little boys, you know, angry. They're just hungry little guys. Hungry little dudes. Well, Johnny, I love talking to scorched, but, man, we've run out of scorched.
[01:04:03] Speaker A: We run out of scorched for today.
[01:04:04] Speaker B: So the only thing I guess I can say is, may the scorched be with you.
[01:04:12] Speaker A: And also with you. I feel rich with scorched.
[01:04:14] Speaker B: Oh, man. Rich. If I were, if I had as many dollars as I had good feelings about the scorched right now, oh, boy.
I would be buying hoagies for everyone. I saw, like, I see somebody, you get a hoagie. I see somebody, you get a hoagie.
[01:04:32] Speaker A: I would love that. I want a hoagie right now.
[01:04:35] Speaker B: Yeah. I think I said that because I'm hungry and I could totally go for a hoagie.
[01:04:40] Speaker A: Well, you know what that means.
[01:04:41] Speaker B: Let's go scorch us some hoagies, Johnny.
[01:04:43] Speaker A: Let's go scorch it up and get some ice cream in the park, just like after. Afterwards, we get ice cream in the park and get shot at. Just like Jessica and Mark.
[01:04:51] Speaker B: Hopefully without the shot at. But, you know, if it happens, at least we'll eat hoagies and ice cream in the park.
[01:04:56] Speaker A: Yep. Good way to go.
[01:04:58] Speaker B: No better.
