[00:02:58] Speaker A: What are we doing here today? Well, welcome, everyone. This is regarding spawn for each week, we're bringing you two issues from Spawn's universe. Except when we don't. This week, we are doing two issues. We're doing scorch 26 and scorch 27. Right in the middle of that meaty John Layman run that we've been having going on. That's been awesome. Right on either side of issue 350 here. Just trying to speed up, catch up a bit. Because we were doing some other mini series and some other fun episodes. We're a little bit behind on the more modern things. So we're trying to speed it up a bit and catch up. [00:03:30] Speaker B: Yeah, but, you know, Johnny, if. If we let ourselves get a little behind on the scorched. And have to do just, like, six or seven records in a row of scorched, not that bad. I'm not going to say no. [00:03:42] Speaker A: I'm not going to complain. [00:03:44] Speaker B: This. I might actually consider this some of the best spawn I have ever read. [00:03:50] Speaker A: It's really good. [00:03:51] Speaker B: And Al Simmons is literally in it for three pages. [00:03:54] Speaker A: Yeah, that's true. It's the new you, baby. [00:03:59] Speaker B: It is the new you. And so previously in the Scorched, the villainous sister of the violator, viscerator has returned and is seeking violence against the scorched. Ooh, they were to watch out. [00:08:27] Speaker B: So many v words in that. [00:08:30] Speaker A: Violence. Violator. Eviscerator. [00:08:32] Speaker B: Violence. [00:08:33] Speaker A: Yeah. No, I like all the v's. It's funny. Good alliteration. [00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. It's fun. But they had a field day trying to be like, no, no, too many. They probably did it. The marks, the Mel Brooks method with. They put an extra v in, and then when they put one v word in too many, we're like, nope, this many and no further. [00:08:53] Speaker A: That's it. Yeah. So this is a fun issue. Kind of picking up with that plotline of viscerator and Bishop. We met them last issue or a few issues ago. [00:09:03] Speaker B: We got a little bit of backstory on Bishop going on. Here is where we open. [00:09:07] Speaker A: Yeah. Because we already got the backstory on the viscerator. Um, basically, last time when we did the, uh. That was with our Mark Spears episode, right? [00:09:15] Speaker B: Yes, it was. [00:09:16] Speaker A: Last time we covered the scorch. Yeah. [00:09:18] Speaker B: Because we. We talked monsters with the monster man himself. [00:09:20] Speaker A: The monster man himself. [00:09:22] Speaker B: Man, that was a fun episode. [00:09:23] Speaker A: Yeah, he was great. [00:09:24] Speaker B: Like, talking to Mark. Yeah. We opened in the jungle, and this is one of. One of the three pages with Al Simmons on it for this entire episode. [00:09:34] Speaker A: Yep. I remember opening this and being like, oh, shit. Cause you get, like, the whole black ops team. It's cool to see Jessica and Al together. [00:09:41] Speaker B: Yeah. We got operatives Al Simmons, Jessica Priest, and Frank Bishop targeting Joaquin Gaviera. [00:09:50] Speaker A: Yep. [00:09:51] Speaker B: There we go. I am not even gonna try to pronounce the name of this operation. So. [00:09:56] Speaker A: Chemistry. [00:09:58] Speaker B: Close enough. It works for me. Yeah, I do like that. The letters for this is like the old label tape. That's the. The plastic stuff that has the letters poked through it. [00:10:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that's fun. [00:10:10] Speaker B: That's real fun. [00:10:11] Speaker A: I always like that little label tape. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Yeah. With the inconsistent kerning. So very exciting. But yeah, they're just tromping through the jungle, you know, looking, looking for their target. Not wasting words or efforts, just, you know, prowling. Like the predators they are. [00:10:32] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. It's like very, very predator. [00:10:36] Speaker B: It is. It is very the predator. Before they realize that they're fighting an alien. [00:10:40] Speaker A: Right. Exactly. Like the early parts of Predator or commando. Even any of those like eighties kind of in the jungle action movies they. [00:10:48] Speaker B: Come across across the town where this, with Joaquin, is, is holed up. They're supposed to avoid the civilians because, you know, it's a covert, covert operation. And so they've got all these kids running around. And then we learn Al's job was to provide a distraction. [00:11:06] Speaker A: So he blows up a thing. [00:11:07] Speaker B: Yeah. And Al never failed an assignment. So obviously that changed when he died. You know, I guess, I guess, I guess you, you know, you gotta, you gotta learn. You gotta relearn how to live and do things after you die, Johnny. [00:11:23] Speaker A: You gotta live and learn and then get loves and then get necroblasm. [00:11:29] Speaker B: I think priest's job was to clear the perimeter. So here she is, just like solid, snaking around and. Oh, man. [00:11:41] Speaker A: Yeah, just clearing him out. But the one that enjoys the murder is bishop. He's also sadistic about it. Jessica's just doing a job. Okay. [00:11:47] Speaker B: And then Bishop enjoys it so much, he's got his little. After being. After, after killing. Cigarette. [00:11:54] Speaker A: Yeah. Lights a sig, looks over all the dead people and he's killed villagers. Yeah, the civilians were, he's, this warlord's among these civilians and they're supposed to not hurt any civilian casualties in the ass. [00:12:07] Speaker B: He literally just rendered Al's distraction moot. Like, what's the point? [00:12:11] Speaker A: Yeah, we distract him to get the citizens out of there. [00:12:14] Speaker B: And Jessica's, Jessica's very task oriented. And she's like, that wasn't, that wasn't the job. Like, we're doing. We're doing the job. Not whatever the fuck we want to do. [00:12:24] Speaker A: That's what I say to my employees all the time. We're doing the job, not whatever the fuck we want to. That's the job. [00:12:30] Speaker B: That is the job. [00:12:32] Speaker A: That corporate. I don't remember one of the mission impossibles. I think it was fallout where she just goes, that's the job. [00:12:38] Speaker B: That's the job. [00:12:39] Speaker A: I can't remember who plays it. It's not the one that plays Amanda Waller, the actress, but it's, she's, it's a similar actress. I don't know. Mission impossible. [00:12:47] Speaker B: Mission impossible is good. I don't remember. I haven't watched them enough to quote them. [00:12:51] Speaker A: So she said, that's the job a lot. And I just think of that all the time when I'm at work. So, yeah, that's the job. [00:12:58] Speaker B: I mean, sometimes. Occasionally it's good to. It's good to know what the boundaries are for what you're supposed to be doing. It's easier to perform a task when you know exactly what you should and shouldn't. [00:13:10] Speaker A: Exactly. [00:13:11] Speaker B: That's why I don't do well with open ended video game worlds, because then it's like I could just go outside and not know what the fuck I'm supposed to do. Why do I want to do that at a video game? [00:13:22] Speaker A: No, it's great. I love it. I love the open world. I've been playing a lot of open world games. I've been playing new Vegas. After watching the show. [00:13:33] Speaker B: I have a lot of friends who've been picking fallout back up, follow up. [00:13:37] Speaker A: Follow up, back out. [00:13:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Is that the new. The new. The new. The new game followed. [00:13:44] Speaker A: And then I've been playing the new season of Diablo, of course, as I always been playing. [00:13:49] Speaker B: Hell yeah. [00:13:50] Speaker A: Hell yeah, indeed. [00:13:51] Speaker B: Nice. Speaking of. Speaking of hell, he gets set to hell yeah. Jessica Priest sends him right there, just so upset that he's just a jerk. Shoots him right in the head. [00:14:02] Speaker A: Al should have known, man. Like, she just loves shooting her partners in the head. [00:14:05] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:14:05] Speaker A: Or burning them, whatever she does. [00:14:07] Speaker B: Sal Bishop. Bishop here says it wouldn't be the last time Jessica Priest put down a fellow operative and kept quiet about it. [00:14:15] Speaker A: I'd be interested to see what if they show that again in the newer continuity, because I don't think it'd be a sadistic. And she probably wouldn't, like, burn him and all that stuff. So, like, I just wonder. I wonder what the new continuity on that will be like if they show, like, if they'll have to show Jessica kill him in, like, a flashback or something. [00:14:32] Speaker B: It'll probably be more. It'll probably be more like this where she thinks that she's got a job instead of, you know, getting off on the idea of offing people. [00:14:43] Speaker A: Right. She's a little less crazy than she was in the nineties. [00:14:47] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. She's a little bit more of an actual person now than she was in the nineties. [00:14:52] Speaker A: Right. Like a real character. This get up's cool, too. I really like her suit here, the high tech, like. [00:14:58] Speaker B: Yeah. With, like, the scarf. Yeah. And, like, the bulletproof plate. [00:15:02] Speaker A: Yeah. Pretty cool. [00:15:04] Speaker B: It is pretty great. And the pouches, like, a reasonable amount of pouches, the number of pouches, you. [00:15:08] Speaker A: Would have some pouches. [00:15:10] Speaker B: Her bullet sent him to hell, and now he's back, and we cut to. [00:15:14] Speaker A: The present, basically, where we've got eviscerator and bishop going into this church, and. [00:15:21] Speaker B: Viscerator is finally like, oh, is he finally done with his story? [00:15:25] Speaker A: Like, jesus Christ. [00:15:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:15:28] Speaker A: Mystery is, like, you know how many times I've died in these millennia I've been alive? It's really not that big a deal. [00:15:32] Speaker B: And she's like, yeah, but how are you back? Are you some sort of spawn now? And Bishop says there are more circles than just the ape, than hell, and I'm very excited for us to explore that. Holy shit. [00:15:45] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. That's this great little tease of, like, there's a lot of other stuff going on. He has a master somewhere in there. [00:15:52] Speaker B: One of the things that makes this John layman run so excellent is he just, like, tosses off things that it's like, wait, wait, wait. [00:15:59] Speaker A: That's a great idea. We're gonna talk about that. Yeah. [00:16:01] Speaker B: I have a feeling it's gonna be like the. Like the. The original guest writer series where there's just. We're gonna get to scorched issue 312, and there's gonna be just like, ah, yeah. You remember when John Layman said three words back in, like, issue 28? Yeah. Yeah. That's what. [00:16:18] Speaker A: That's what the whole plot's gonna be hinging on. [00:16:21] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm here for it. I'm here for it. [00:16:23] Speaker A: But what are they doing in this church, you know? What the heck are they going in there for? [00:16:28] Speaker B: I don't know. It seems like they're hell people, that they shouldn't be allowed in a church, Johnny. But. [00:16:32] Speaker A: But it says half an hour earlier, outside the same building we got the scorch. [00:16:36] Speaker B: Yes. The. The main three, the trace caballeros. Johnny. [00:16:42] Speaker A: Yep. Redeemer, Jessica, Mark. They're all in their civilian clothes, and they're gonna go do something. We're not exactly sure what. [00:16:50] Speaker B: Yeah, I do like that they're working off of intel that medieval gave them, and, like, Jessica is giving this information to Mark, even though it's Mark's body that said the words. [00:17:03] Speaker A: Right. What could they be talking about? They said, I heard he's drinking again. Hmm. [00:17:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:17:08] Speaker A: Do we know any alcoholic people that work in a church that are in the spawn universe? [00:17:12] Speaker B: Never happened. [00:17:14] Speaker A: I think there might be some. I think there might be one in particular. I love this intro to haunt, though. It's really cool. [00:17:21] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they. They go up, they send Mark into the confessional booth. [00:17:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:25] Speaker B: Get in there to get. To draw out Daniel Kilgore. And Mark's like, yeah, no, no, no, I'm not gonna do that, but I need to talk to you and your dead brother. And then he's just like, the fuck you say, yeah. And starts to haunt out. [00:17:40] Speaker A: I love how the original, like, haunt logo pops up. The thing is, the being his own is haunt. [00:17:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Mystic being created by the tethering of two souls, which this is. This is something we can go on. Maybe. Maybe there's other people who are tethered to other souls and they're more haunts. [00:17:59] Speaker A: There could be. Could be a haint, a haunted hate. [00:18:05] Speaker B: Well, if it's a haint, it can't cross. It can't cross water. So everybody's gonna have blue on the bottom of their. Their porch ceiling. [00:18:14] Speaker A: What? [00:18:15] Speaker B: That's. That's something they do in the south because hates can't cross over water. But they also were kind of dumb and can't tell positioning because, you know. [00:18:24] Speaker A: What is a hate? I just made it because it sounded funny. [00:18:26] Speaker B: A hank. A Hank is just another word for a ghost. [00:18:29] Speaker A: Okay, so it's just a ghost. [00:18:31] Speaker B: Yeah, just a ghost. Usually a ghost. [00:18:33] Speaker A: So that's like, southern haunt would be a hank. [00:18:35] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah, it would be a Hank. All right, well, he's got a. Like a. Like a wheat. A wheat sticking out of his mouth. [00:18:42] Speaker A: Yeah, he's got, like a buckwheat sticking out. That'd be hilarious. [00:18:44] Speaker B: Instead of being a priest, he's a. He's a. What are they called? A moonshiner. Hell, yeah. [00:18:53] Speaker A: He bonded with his dead bubba, who died. Moonshine. [00:18:58] Speaker B: Who died? Died in the stillsplosion. [00:19:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:19:01] Speaker B: I used to work with a guy from Kentucky, and he was like, hell, yeah. You just drive down the back road. So those guys are selling their moonshot across just right there on the highway still. Yeah. Apparently a well done moonshine is supposed to be excellent. [00:19:16] Speaker A: Interesting. I never. I think I, like, tasted it. It's just like, woo. [00:19:21] Speaker B: Yeah. I've actually. I've actually gotten to experience some well done moonshine, and it was like mouthfeel and actual flavor. It was great. It was great. [00:19:33] Speaker A: Interesting. [00:19:34] Speaker B: Apparently, if you have a license from the government to make jet fuel or airplane fuel, that's literally making moonshine, so. [00:19:43] Speaker A: Oh, okay. [00:19:45] Speaker B: So if you know anybody who works in the petroleum, the aviation petroleum industry, they can make you moonshine. Connection. [00:19:52] Speaker A: Nice. Not too shabby. [00:19:55] Speaker B: Uh huh. But so haunt just, like, explodes out of the confessional all upset and being like, why are you here? And he's confronted by the scorched in their full regalia. [00:20:07] Speaker A: There they are. [00:20:08] Speaker B: Mm hmm. [00:20:09] Speaker A: Maybe the first time. Last time we see him like this for a long time. [00:20:12] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Oh, boy. [00:20:14] Speaker A: If we go by the next issue. [00:20:15] Speaker B: And then he's like, hey, you should. You snuck up on me. Why'd you do that? I could have hurt you. [00:20:21] Speaker A: I don't work here. [00:20:25] Speaker B: And Jessica's like, yeah, we'll know for next time. [00:20:27] Speaker A: I'm trying to save people's souls. [00:20:29] Speaker B: And Kurt's. Kurt's trying to kind of calm Daniel down, you know, Jessica's. Jessica's been like, hey, hey, hey, hey. We need your help. We need your help. And Hans says, I'm not. I'm nothing like you. I got nothing in common with you. I'm not a help person. I'm not a heaven person. What do you need from me? [00:20:46] Speaker A: And Jessica's like, yo, look, I got black ops training like your brother had. Mark and medieval are bonded, just like you. You and redeemer both men of God, but not in the conventional sense. We have a lot in common, dude. [00:21:06] Speaker B: Yeah. Jessica just, like, throws down the facts. She comes with the receipts and is like, hey, man, don't. [00:21:12] Speaker A: Don't be saying that to me. [00:21:14] Speaker B: Don't say stuff that you know you can't back up. Some guy with a bio reader camera. [00:47:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:47:06] Speaker A: And gps tracking chip. [00:47:08] Speaker B: Yeah, she's. She's almost Amanda Waller in this moment. She's extra Amanda waller in this moment, actually, because we learned that the gps tracker that she put in her people also is an exploding device. [00:47:22] Speaker A: Boom. Blows them right up.
