[00:00:00] Speaker A: That dream you carry in your heart is the only fire you have left, Tobias.
Good evening and welcome to the Malibols. This is regarding Spawn, the world's best spawn podcast. I'm your co host, John Fisher.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: And I am your co host, David Williams. And Johnny. Yeah, this weekend's gonna suck. They're stealing an hour of precious. Of precious time.
[00:00:58] Speaker A: I know.
[00:00:58] Speaker B: It sucks from everyone.
[00:01:00] Speaker A: That's why I voted for Trump, so we would get rid of it.
[00:01:04] Speaker B: The problem is most people, when they say they want to get rid of daylight savings time, actually just want to make daylight savings time permanent. And I would prefer to have my daylight in the morning versus the evening.
[00:01:16] Speaker A: Yeah, but other people. Most everyone disagrees with you.
[00:01:18] Speaker B: Yeah, I know, I know.
[00:01:19] Speaker A: People want the day to last forever. I'm like, no, wake up and smell the roses.
[00:01:23] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, do it, do it.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: Early bird gets the worm.
[00:01:28] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, but the second mouse gets the cheese, right?
[00:01:33] Speaker A: Oh, that's true.
[00:01:34] Speaker B: Oh, wow. And actually I. They did a. I think they did a study somewhere that like, while the early bird may get the worm, the. The bird who wakes up right after the early bird will sneak into the nest and make love to his wife. So what? Bird wives? Yeah. Apparently, apparently there's a, there's a, There's a species of bird that while the male mate is out gathering food in the morning, there's like opportunists who will sneak in and be like, haha, this is my bird wife now.
[00:02:02] Speaker A: Oh my God.
[00:02:06] Speaker B: So I guess the early bird gets cucked, Johnny.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Well, a cuckold is a bird.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: Oh, maybe that's, Maybe that's the bird.
[00:02:12] Speaker A: I think that is the bird. The cuckold is named after a bird.
I know this.
[00:02:17] Speaker B: That's probably the bird.
[00:02:18] Speaker A: Because I was a theater major.
They talk about cuckolding and Shakespeare a lot.
[00:02:23] Speaker B: They sure do. They sure do. The, the, the theater majors learn all the, the. The colorful, poetic birds and animals, whereas biology majors have to learn the boring. The boring brown birds.
[00:02:38] Speaker A: Oh, yes. I just have to say it. My favorite Shakespeare one that I learned was tupping the white ewe. Tupping means to like, literally to fuck a sheep.
[00:02:49] Speaker B: Oh, man, it's sad that they had to come out with a succinct word for the firing of sheep.
[00:02:55] Speaker A: And like my friend Aaron, he had, he had a shirt that was for the Oklahoma City Thunder and it said tee up, but it just. So I said top like go sheep.
I don't know why this is so funny to me. I look crying.
[00:03:13] Speaker B: Oh boy. It would be even Funnier if the. The thunder mascot were a sheep instead of a bison?
[00:03:18] Speaker A: Yeah, it would be a little funnier.
[00:03:20] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:03:21] Speaker A: David, we're gonna lose an hour of time. But I've already lost, like, six hours of time in 24 hours listening to Ghost Song over and over again.
[00:03:28] Speaker B: Oh. Oh, yeah. I wouldn't call that lost time, Johnny.
[00:03:31] Speaker A: No.
[00:03:32] Speaker B: Or if it's lost time, I'd call it the time I want to get lost in.
[00:03:35] Speaker A: Do a lot of pacing while I listen. So that's good. Give those steps in.
[00:03:40] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah, but it's good. It was very good. Satanized.
Satanized this week.
[00:03:47] Speaker A: Very catchy.
[00:03:48] Speaker B: Yes. Yes. Our.
Our text message thread has just basically been.
Been excitement and then lyrics and then more excitement and then more lyrics. And the music video Papa 5 is looking pretty. Pretty wonderful. John.
[00:04:08] Speaker A: No. Yeah. At the end of the music video, they reveal the. The new look of the band. Yeah, he's got this like.
Yeah, like, chrome armor on this.
[00:04:17] Speaker B: The faceless ghouls have, like. It looks like glow in the dark skeletons on them. Honestly, Johnny, it looks like they are Mark Spears skeletons. They got that nice green.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: Yeah, that's true. And they got, like, Victorian hats on and, like, capes and shit.
[00:04:34] Speaker B: Yeah, it looks. And sparkles. So many sparkles. Oh, boy.
[00:04:37] Speaker A: And they're creepy.
[00:04:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:40] Speaker A: Hilarious. I like the priest. The guy was great. Whoever that guy was was great.
[00:04:45] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I like the, like the part at the. The end where they're. They're seeing if he's been cured and there's the temptation of the ankle.
[00:04:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
I love a nun scolding.
Not like a fetish way. I mean, maybe, Maybe, maybe, maybe.
[00:05:06] Speaker B: I mean, so that's. I mean, you are. You are on record as having watched many more nunsploitation films than I have, so.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: Yeah. When did I talk about that? We talked about the nun. Probably.
[00:05:17] Speaker B: Probably every time we talk about nun stuff and then you talk about nun movies, and I'm like, I've never even heard of that. You're like, yeah, it's awesome.
[00:05:24] Speaker A: Yeah, this is great. Nun ones. I do love the devils. That's one of my favorite movies. And that's a nunsploitation for sure.
[00:05:30] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a. It's a fun. It's a. It's a rich topic. Nunneries. Yeah, I mean, the. That. That most recent Lost Guy show.
[00:05:41] Speaker A: The most recent Lost Guy show. Which Lost Guy? The guy.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: No.
[00:05:47] Speaker A: Oh, David Lindelof.
[00:05:48] Speaker B: David Lindelof. The most recent David Lindelof.
[00:05:50] Speaker A: Yeah. What was it called? Madam Mother Oh, I forget what it's.
[00:05:54] Speaker B: Called, but it's about a nun. It's fucking great. You should watch it.
[00:05:59] Speaker A: It is about a nun.
[00:06:00] Speaker B: What is it called? It's called.
And I'm not looking this up because I don't remember.
[00:06:09] Speaker A: Are you looking it up?
[00:06:10] Speaker B: No, I'm not looking it up.
[00:06:11] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:06:12] Speaker B: Staring. Staring. I mean, whatever it's called, it's fucking good.
[00:06:15] Speaker A: Like Mother Thatcher or some shit.
[00:06:19] Speaker B: Close enough. It'll come to me, probably. It's called the Chosen, starring Elizabeth Tavish. Shout out to Liz Tavish.
[00:06:28] Speaker A: Yeah. Chosen. Got bought by Amazon, much like James Bond.
[00:06:31] Speaker B: Oh, really? Interesting. That's fascinating. I told you that. The people say it's a good show.
[00:06:38] Speaker A: I mean, you can watch it. Soon it'll be on Amazon Prime, I think, after April.
[00:06:42] Speaker B: Jeff Bezos, if nothing else, has a habit of buying shows that are good and sometimes making them continue to be good.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: You're saying Jeff Bezos has good taste?
[00:06:53] Speaker B: Whoever purchases.
[00:06:54] Speaker A: You ever bought an Amazon Basics product, David.
[00:06:58] Speaker B: Hey, good taste has nothing to do with quality product.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: I guess that's true.
[00:07:03] Speaker B: I mean, he did. He did literally save the Expanse, and the Expanse is a fucking great show, so.
[00:07:08] Speaker A: Okay, Well, I guess he gets that. They roasted him pretty good at the Oscars. Conan did.
[00:07:14] Speaker B: How we need an Oscars recap, Johnny.
[00:07:17] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I had some friends over. It was good. Spawn didn't win any Oscars.
[00:07:22] Speaker B: Boo.
[00:07:22] Speaker A: Neither did better, man.
[00:07:26] Speaker B: It's a sad day for monkey kind.
[00:07:28] Speaker A: Yeah, Conan did a great job.
I. I don't know. It's fun to shit talk and watch the Oscars with your friends and shit talk celebrities. I mean, that's just what you do, right?
[00:07:38] Speaker B: That's what you do.
[00:07:39] Speaker A: But I like Dinora, so, you know, I'm glad it won. You know, I would like to see the substance with a little more.
[00:07:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:07:46] Speaker A: As a horror spawn podcast host, but.
[00:07:51] Speaker B: Also as somebody who has eyes and can recognize when a good movie is happening. Yeah, man, that movie fucking rocks so hard.
[00:07:58] Speaker A: The substance is good. Shocking. Shockingly.
[00:08:02] Speaker B: Shockingly. I saw. I saw somebody saying that the. But that one lady who won over Demi Moore was literally.
[00:08:11] Speaker A: It's the substance. It's the plot of the substance. Yeah. Mickey. Matt. Mickey Madison. Mickey Madison wins. Yeah, it's just the plot of the substance. She's like a younger. She's, like, crawled out of her back.
[00:08:24] Speaker B: She's got her old body chained to the wall.
[00:08:28] Speaker A: There was a pretty good bit. I'm surprised they showed on tv. So it was graphic. But coding came out of the Be More's back. Like, they edited it in.
He had dropped his keys and his cell phone in there, so he had to, like, dig around in her back.
It was pretty funny. Conan was good.
[00:08:45] Speaker B: That's great. Oh, man. Conan's always been. He's a firecracker, that guy.
[00:08:50] Speaker A: He reminded me. It reminded me of the show a little bit at one point because of our show, because he did a song that was. I'm not gonna waste any time. And the song goes on, like, five minutes about him singing about not wasting time.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: So it reminds you of the show, Johnny. And what is this show?
[00:09:04] Speaker A: This is regarding Spawn Respawn, where each week we bring you two issues from Spawn's universe. Except when we don't. This week is no different.
We have two issues from Spawn's universe. We have, first up, Deadly Tales, the Gunslinger Number two. I can't believe we're already in the second issue of this beautiful book.
[00:09:22] Speaker B: Oh, man, it's so good.
[00:09:23] Speaker A: It's all the way back from January 2025. This is the first time I think we're covering a 2025 book.
[00:09:29] Speaker B: Think it is, too. Yeah.
[00:09:31] Speaker A: Wow. Oh, my God. Play Old Lang Sign.
[00:09:37] Speaker B: We gotta find. We gotta find out if that old man beat up that baby or not.
[00:09:40] Speaker A: Yeah. We have the New Year baby. Fight the old man. Like an Arthur. That was so crazy. I realized I was from fucking Arthur.
[00:09:45] Speaker B: Not like Arthur was a great show.
[00:09:48] Speaker A: Oh, man, I did like Arthur.
[00:09:51] Speaker B: So good.
[00:09:52] Speaker A: Good theme song. Hey, I don't even sing anymore because I know you're just gonna cut in the song. So I just like.
[00:09:59] Speaker B: No, no, no. If you sing, then I don't have to cut in the song.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: Okay?
[00:10:03] Speaker B: That's what makes it good.
[00:10:04] Speaker A: And I said, hey, hey, what a wonderful kind Today we can learn to work and play and get along with each other.
[00:10:15] Speaker B: It was like. It's like what Ziggy Marley did. The theme song.
[00:10:18] Speaker A: Yeah, for sure.
[00:10:20] Speaker B: Pretty great.
[00:10:21] Speaker A: Yeah. So Deadly Tales Gun number two.
And then we have, for our second issue, Sam and Twitch Case Files Number nine. A new case begins. As it says on the COVID Yes, indeed. Part one.
So we've finished the saga of Indiana or Iowa.
[00:10:39] Speaker B: Plainfield, Indiana or Iowa.
[00:10:42] Speaker A: One of the two. The Corn.
[00:10:44] Speaker B: The Cornfield Murder.
[00:10:45] Speaker A: The Cornfield Place. We figured we finished that saga and now we're onto the saga of. Well, a new saga.
[00:10:52] Speaker B: A new saga begins a long, long time ago.
[00:10:56] Speaker A: Why don't we just make this a podcast where we just sing to each other?
[00:11:01] Speaker B: Hey, we could then put a new. A new tag. And we could put ourselves in the musical category.
[00:11:06] Speaker A: Oh, boy.
[00:11:09] Speaker B: Can you imagine? And if you write, if you write. If you get around to writing Spawn the musical, Johnny, then we can. We got a built in fan base going.
[00:11:17] Speaker A: I would never be. I would let Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber handle that one.
[00:11:21] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. I couldn't. I couldn't imagine trying to write music. What the fuck? How do you put. How do you put music together?
[00:11:27] Speaker A: Yeah, that's something. My mind, My mind doesn't work that way at all. Yeah, there's some things I can do but like thinking about, like putting music, like coming up with music. That's crazy.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: Yeah. And like thinking of like the best ways to do the harmonies and not just have it be everything all at once. That's. That's my approach, Johnny. Just do all the things all the time.
[00:11:46] Speaker A: Right.
[00:11:48] Speaker B: It makes for bad music. It makes it go.
[00:11:51] Speaker A: Gotta have those harmonies.
So we're harmonizing with these issues today.
[00:11:56] Speaker B: Yes, indeed.
[00:11:57] Speaker A: And we're loving it.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. So let's. Let's love it some more. Let's crack into these. Let's crack into this Slim Jim.
[00:12:06] Speaker A: Johnny, eat me. All right, cool.
So, yeah, Deadly Tales Gunslinger number two. We always start with the covers and. David, I bought the wrong cover.
[00:12:16] Speaker B: Oh, no. Yeah, I can see that because I'm looking at mine and mine says cover B. So that makes me think you don't have it.
[00:12:25] Speaker A: I don't.
You got the Mark Spears cover.
[00:12:29] Speaker B: Yeah, the COVID B is the Mark Spears cover. And it is. I'll just put it there for you to see. And it's glorious. It's gunslinger on the back of a pale horse aiming his, his, his revolver down at you. And there's like skeletal green hands blocking the face of the viewer. So it's like a first person. It's like a first person shooter, but you're the bad guy.
Yeah, there's like pink lightning in the background. Oh, boy.
[00:12:59] Speaker A: Those crazy sky colors that Tom McFarlane hates. Yeah. I mean, it's just amazing. It's. It's perfect.
[00:13:05] Speaker B: Absolutely incredible.
[00:13:07] Speaker A: It's the pinks and the greens and the, the.
[00:13:09] Speaker B: The blue of the. The blue white of the horse.
[00:13:12] Speaker A: And I mean, the A cover is good by Marco Falia. And it's just pretty simple. It's just Mr. Gunslinger.
[00:13:21] Speaker B: It's more classic western, I would say.
[00:13:23] Speaker A: More classic western. Yours is much more of a phantasmagoria western.
[00:13:27] Speaker B: Yeah, this. Mine's definitely from the. The less well regarded film section.
[00:13:33] Speaker A: Yes. Yours looks like an exploitation film, whereas mine looks like something like the Outlaw Josie Wales.
Because the A cover is gunslinger standing there, like framed in a noose.
[00:13:44] Speaker B: Got exceptionally tall hat though, so that's got that going for you.
[00:13:48] Speaker A: That's always good.
[00:13:49] Speaker B: There's that nice vista behind him of the mesas. Yeah, it's a good cover. It's a quality cover.
[00:13:55] Speaker A: No, it's good. Like I said, it's like more of a classic western or like a western novel cover.
[00:14:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: Whereas yours has.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: Yeah, yours, yours would not be out of place on like your, your, your dad or your grandfather's bookshelf.
[00:14:09] Speaker A: I feel like I can smell what the book would smell like.
[00:14:12] Speaker B: So, so fun story. When my, when my grandparents had to move into an assisted living facility, my grandfather, like every book he had ever read he had kept in the basement. So they had like, half their basement was just old books and he had a metric fuck ton of westerns that he was like, hey, hey, could you bring those? And like, he was a rock star amongst all the other old men for six solid months just based on the fact that he brought a whole bunch of westerns with him.
[00:14:42] Speaker A: Oh, hell yeah.
[00:14:43] Speaker B: It was, it was awesome. My grandfather was the coolest motherfucker alive.
[00:14:47] Speaker A: Did you ever. Did you ever go to Gardeners Used Books in Tulsa?
[00:14:50] Speaker B: No, I didn't get to use books until I moved up here.
[00:14:53] Speaker A: Oh, wow. Wow. Yeah, I had a big used book phase in Tulsa mainly because of Gardeners. It's this giant used bookstore. You should check it out next time you're in Tulsa.
[00:15:02] Speaker B: Well, I will do that.
[00:15:03] Speaker A: But they have. That was like what I first realized. Like, oh, my God. Westerns have like a thousand books in the series because they have a western section and there's all these signs about which ones they'll buy and which ones they won't like because there's like certain ones and those are some long series.
[00:15:18] Speaker B: Yeah, well, it's like Bonanza was literally just a soap opera for men.
[00:15:23] Speaker A: Yeah. It's the longest running TV show, right? Or no, Simpsons beat it.
[00:15:28] Speaker B: Well, yeah, Simpsons has been going for like 36 seasons.
[00:15:32] Speaker A: It might still be the longest 40 seasons. It might still be the longest live action.
[00:15:37] Speaker B: Maybe, maybe, maybe Bonanza.
[00:15:39] Speaker A: Too bad, too bad it wasn't lost.
[00:15:44] Speaker B: No magic.
[00:15:45] Speaker A: I couldn't imagine if it went on for 20 years. No, no. Loss was great as the six season closed experience.
[00:15:52] Speaker B: Yeah, nice. But I still haven't started because I'm a bum.
[00:15:56] Speaker A: It's okay. I have a friend. It's still worth watching in 2025 though. I have a friend at work that is watching it and he is loving it. So nice shout out to Joel.
He's in season four right now and he's having a good time.
[00:16:09] Speaker B: Hell, yeah. I. I fully plan to have a good time when I get to it, but, you know, it takes me forever to do anything.
My internal clock isn't what it used to be. Johnny.
[00:16:19] Speaker A: I mean, there's a lot of shows, too, David. Yeah, a lot of shows. A lot of shows.
[00:16:24] Speaker B: Yes. And t. I just finished. I just finished the first two seasons of Twin Peaks, and it should surprise no one that I absolutely loved it.
[00:16:32] Speaker A: Nice.
[00:16:33] Speaker B: What are you watching it on Paramount.
[00:16:37] Speaker A: Paramount.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: Because I got Paramount plus for all that. For all that. Star wars or Star Trek contents, Johnny.
[00:16:44] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I don't have Paramount plus, because I don't. I'm not a Trekkie. They got all the Mission Impossibles. I like those.
[00:16:50] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true. That's true. I think they have one of the Equalizers, because, like, the Equalizer series is spread across all of the different channels.
[00:17:00] Speaker A: Studios made each one or something.
[00:17:02] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't. I don't know. I don't know. Those are. That's a fun series, though. Watching Denzel just beat the. Out of people is. I could do that.
[00:17:09] Speaker A: Said that before.
[00:17:10] Speaker B: I mean, it's. It holds true, Johnny. It's very true. True facts.
[00:17:15] Speaker A: Equalizer. I always like the. The title of man on Fire. That's another Denzel action that was. They're not related, are they?
[00:17:23] Speaker B: No, no, because I think that's the one.
[00:17:25] Speaker A: That's what he's protecting. Dakota Fanning.
[00:17:28] Speaker B: That's the one where there's, like, a man on fire.
[00:17:30] Speaker A: There's a man on fire, David.
[00:17:32] Speaker B: Oh, man. Really?
[00:17:34] Speaker A: No, that's not the hospital one. That's a John.
[00:17:36] Speaker B: No, no, like a. Like hostages in a bank.
[00:17:38] Speaker A: Oh, hostages.
[00:17:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:40] Speaker A: Isn't John Q the hospital one?
[00:17:43] Speaker B: I think so. That sounds right.
[00:17:46] Speaker A: Yeah. I never saw it. I love Denzel, though.
[00:17:49] Speaker B: It's a fascinating. It's a fascinating career that Denzel is both extremely good at very serious drama and extremely good at ludicrous action films. Yeah, it's a nice range.
[00:18:02] Speaker A: I just see him in. Evidently, he's really good in Gladiator, too.
[00:18:05] Speaker B: I have heard that, too. I need to watch that.
[00:18:07] Speaker A: Yeah, I bet it's fun. There's sharks in it, David. They fill up the sharks water and put sharks in there.
[00:18:14] Speaker B: Sold.
[00:18:15] Speaker A: Yeah. When I heard that, I was like, I gotta see this shit. Why didn't anyone tell me that when it was in theaters?
[00:18:19] Speaker B: Yeah, they should have led with that. They should just be like, there's sharks in this.
[00:18:23] Speaker A: Okay, there's sharks in this movie.
[00:18:27] Speaker B: We could start a website. It could be like, does the dog die in this mov. This film? So that way you don't watch the films with the dogs dying. Does this. Is there a shark in this movie?
[00:18:36] Speaker A: And the. And if it's yes, then I'm watching it. You ever seen Sharknado, like the original?
[00:18:42] Speaker B: No, I haven't.
[00:18:42] Speaker A: It's actually pretty good.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: Oh, nice. It's got.
Who's the washed up actor that's in it?
[00:18:48] Speaker A: Oh, I don't remember. He, like, owns the bar.
[00:18:52] Speaker B: Yeah, because it was. Because I heard. I heard people were like. I was actually very impressed that he. He did. Or was Tara Reid in it?
[00:18:59] Speaker A: Tara Reid's in it? Yeah. No, she's in. Yes, she's in it. Tara Reid's the washed up one. Quite literally, when that Sharknado hits him.
[00:19:07] Speaker B: Tara Reid was the drummer in Josie and the Pussycats. And that's really all I care about because Josie and the Pussycats fucking rocked.
[00:19:15] Speaker A: I know. It's a beloved.
[00:19:16] Speaker B: It's so good.
[00:19:17] Speaker A: It's a beloved film. I always get it confused with Spice World. I liked both of them as a kid.
[00:19:22] Speaker B: Spice up your life. Well, one of them has meatloaf and the other one doesn't.
[00:19:26] Speaker A: Which one is meatloaf?
[00:19:27] Speaker B: Spice World. He's the bus driver.
[00:19:29] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
It also has Bob Hoskins.
[00:19:33] Speaker B: Oh, man. Fucking love Bob Hoskins.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: Because, like, when someone goes into one of the girls, like one of the Spice Girls goes into, like, a booth and does a quick change, like Superman. She comes out, she's just Bob Hoskins. He says. He says, girl power.
[00:19:50] Speaker B: Oh, man. Rip, Rip. A legend.
[00:19:54] Speaker A: Who's your favorite Spice Girl?
[00:19:57] Speaker B: Probably scary.
[00:19:59] Speaker A: I like sporty.
[00:20:00] Speaker B: That was. That was very much my vibe.
[00:20:02] Speaker A: Scary Spice, Sporty Spice.
[00:20:05] Speaker B: I don't have enough energy to keep up with anything sporty, Johnny.
[00:20:09] Speaker A: No.
[00:20:10] Speaker B: No. Well, look at me. Look at me. Do I. Do I scream sporty to you?
[00:20:16] Speaker A: I'm trying to get there. Working out. Caleb.
[00:20:19] Speaker B: Oh, man, he's just brought back all those Thai techniques that he's gonna start busting out on you. Next thing I know, you're gonna be full martial artist.
[00:20:30] Speaker A: No, I'm gonna be full Murray Head and be singing One Night in Bangkok.
[00:20:35] Speaker B: You get your kicks above the waistline, sweetheart.
[00:20:38] Speaker A: Sunshine.
[00:20:39] Speaker B: Sunshine. God damn it. I always say, sweet shirt, sweet shirt.
[00:20:43] Speaker A: It was his birthday the other day.
[00:20:45] Speaker B: Caleb's.
[00:20:46] Speaker A: No, it was Murray Heads, Murray, heads.
[00:20:49] Speaker B: Oh, nice.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: I don't know why I knew that. I think it just popped up in my feed somehow.
[00:20:53] Speaker B: Did he play a game of chess for his birthday, or did he betray his. His savior because he was saved? He was Judas, right?
[00:21:03] Speaker A: Yeah, he was Judas. And Jesus Christ Superstar. I'm pretty sure.
[00:21:06] Speaker B: Why should you want to know?
[00:21:09] Speaker A: It's so crazy that One Night in Bangkok's like, a fucking hit. And, like, no one knows it's from a musical called Chess. Yeah.
[00:21:17] Speaker B: It didn't do too well.
[00:21:20] Speaker A: Hey, I love Chess.
[00:21:22] Speaker B: Hey, I'm not. I'm not. I haven't seen the full musical.
[00:21:26] Speaker A: I see.
[00:21:26] Speaker B: It cannot. I cannot make any actual judgments of taste on it, but you could look at the numbers. It did not pull good numbers, Johnny.
[00:21:35] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I love Chess, but there's. I only listen about 30 of the soundtrack.
[00:21:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:40] Speaker A: And I love it. So what does that tell you?
[00:21:42] Speaker B: Yeah, I have a. I have a coworker who, right before he moved to Chicago from Moscow, the Moscow Opera, put on a. A production of Chess, and he was like. Yeah, because that's his favorite musical, actually.
[00:21:57] Speaker A: Nice.
[00:21:58] Speaker B: It translates well to a Russian audience, apparently.
[00:22:01] Speaker A: I mean, the Russians are a big part of it. That's probably why Russians are having a moment there in the Nora a lot. And they're having wars.
[00:22:11] Speaker B: We're probably going to get another Anastasia movie.
[00:22:14] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Live action.
[00:22:16] Speaker B: Actually, speaking of Russians, that comes up in Violator.
[00:22:19] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:22:20] Speaker B: Yeah, you should. If you haven't. If you aren't up to date on your Violator miniseries, y'all, you should probably. Well, we'll cover it here eventually.
[00:22:26] Speaker A: Yeah. We're trying to figure out when. Yeah. Yeah. Let's not talk with scheduling to give me anxiety. David.
[00:22:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
What's something that would soothe your anxiety, Johnny?
[00:22:35] Speaker A: Let's pop open this. Gunslinger Number two. Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger Number Two.
[00:22:40] Speaker B: Hell, yeah.
[00:22:41] Speaker A: We gotta give credit where credit is due.
Script plot by Jimmy Palmiotti. Art by Patrick Reynolds. Colors by Lewis nct, lettering by Tom Wojczykowski.
[00:22:54] Speaker B: Because his wife likes that gunslinger.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: He's doing a great job.
[00:22:57] Speaker B: Yeah, he is.
[00:22:58] Speaker A: Cover art. We already covered the covers. Creative directors Todd McFarlane and editor in chief is Thomas Healy.
Previously in Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger. After his horrific transformation to the Gunslinger spawn Tobias. What Sets out on a bloody path to revenge.
[00:23:17] Speaker B: I didn't know Papa was in this.
[00:23:18] Speaker A: I know. Tobias Forge himself. No, I mean, we don't know his name, and we very soon find out in the issue, but they spoil it in the previously On. Yes, because they don't say Tobias in the first issue. We would have mentioned it for sure.
[00:23:32] Speaker B: Yeah, we're back to the. We're back to the classic. The classic previous blurb.
Johnny.
[00:23:39] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:23:40] Speaker B: That. That, like, soon after we pointed it out, it went away for a really long time. But it's coming back. I love it. I love it.
[00:23:48] Speaker A: It's back with a vengeance. And back with a vengeance is the gunslinger. Because we open up. He's just in media fight.
[00:23:55] Speaker B: Yeah, he's just blaming. Blaming.
[00:23:58] Speaker A: Where we left him off last time were the two.
The guy who split into two creatures.
[00:24:04] Speaker B: Yeah, those two creatures are just laughing and having a good time. Well, Javi's or not Javi. Tobias is trying to.
[00:24:13] Speaker A: Yeah, come on, get his name right. It's so clear who he is. Yeah, he's Tobias inhabiting another body.
Maybe he's not Javi yet. We know that.
[00:24:23] Speaker B: Yeah, we do know that. Because that doesn't happen until the bloop. Bloop through time.
[00:24:28] Speaker A: Until he get sucks through time where.
[00:24:30] Speaker B: He meets up with where he gets sucked into a poisoned body.
[00:24:34] Speaker A: Yeah. When he gets here, he gets tricked by Cogniostro into a poisoned body.
[00:24:39] Speaker B: Then he defeats. He defeats Auger and somehow unpoise. I don't. It still doesn't make sense.
[00:24:44] Speaker A: That issue is confusing as I. I.
[00:24:47] Speaker B: Think I've read it like seven times and I still honestly don't know what happened. Except for Cogliostro wore a poncho and it was pretty groovy.
[00:24:55] Speaker A: What is that Spawn? Three hundred and nine.
[00:24:56] Speaker B: I think it's either 309 or 307.
[00:25:00] Speaker A: Yeah, it's the one that came with the.
[00:25:03] Speaker B: Speaking of punching, these guys are just. Javi's trying to shoot them in the eyes, shoot them in the face. And they're just. They're just. Gah. And biting him and all that stuff.
[00:25:14] Speaker A: Yeah, look. Nod on the side of his head, leaving a big ass gash.
[00:25:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
They chomp down on his arms.
[00:25:21] Speaker A: It's like what my cat does in my hand. But, like, it's kind of sweet when.
[00:25:25] Speaker B: She does it, you know, she definitely. She definitely imagines that she's one of these creatures while she's doing it.
[00:25:30] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, I'm getting one over on this. Fucking Barbie. Thinks she's a. She's a panther.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: They all do. They all do.
[00:25:37] Speaker A: Until she's one tough broad, though.
[00:25:39] Speaker B: Until they can see like a smidgen of bowl between their kibble. Then they're like, what the fuck is this? Where's My food.
[00:25:46] Speaker A: Oh, I know.
[00:25:47] Speaker B: It's like, there's one empty spot in the bowl. The rest of it is full. Just eat it. Well, there's nothing here.
[00:25:53] Speaker A: Meow.
I like cats.
[00:25:57] Speaker B: Yeah, cats are cool. You have to. You have to be more patient with cats than dogs, because a dog, you can just pick them up and, like, slam them next to you and be like, you're gonna sit here. We're gonna have a good time. And they're like, okay. Whereas cats, you have to, like. You have to be like, if I stay very still, they'll get me.
[00:26:14] Speaker A: They might come up. Yeah. Barbie, like, will occasionally come and cuddle with me.
[00:26:18] Speaker B: Or. Or either that or needs to pee and be about to stand up to go to the bathroom, and then they'll come sit on you. Classic.
[00:26:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:26] Speaker B: That's the law, Johnny. You can't move. You can't move a sleeping cat. That cat's there. You got to stay there.
[00:26:31] Speaker A: Oh, I know. If that cat's sleeping on you, you're not moving. I haven't been late for work because I didn't want to stop culling Barbie.
[00:26:39] Speaker B: Nice. My. My dad had the magic belly. Like, he could. He could just be taking a nap on a Saturday, and a cat that we didn't know would come into the house and fall asleep on him and be like, what the is this?
[00:26:51] Speaker A: It just summons a cat.
[00:26:52] Speaker B: It's just, like, called to them. Hilarious.
[00:26:55] Speaker A: Yeah. Javi's. Or not Javi. Shit. Tobias. It's so confusing.
[00:27:00] Speaker B: Yeah. He. He abandons his gun and pulls out a knife and starts.
Apparently. Apparently he should have started with the knife earlier because they're like, it's just too little, too late. Indicating the effectiveness of the knife over the gun.
[00:27:15] Speaker A: Let me just get this over with.
[00:27:16] Speaker B: Is their. Their master wants him alive so they can't kill him.
[00:27:20] Speaker A: So they're like, let's do something. I like. They call him. He's as soft as a chewed heart.
[00:27:25] Speaker B: That sounds like a. That sounds like a violator. A violator insult.
[00:27:28] Speaker A: Yeah. So they take him and they, like, pin him up.
[00:27:33] Speaker B: Yeah, they fucking. They crucify him on the side of the. The cabin.
[00:27:37] Speaker A: Yeah. Basically.
[00:27:38] Speaker B: Speaking of the chosen.
[00:27:40] Speaker A: Speaking of the chosen. I haven't got that point yet. Spoiler alert.
I think that's the fourth season, is when he gets crucified. I think you can go see it on 420. We can go see that. Or Revenge of the Sith on 425. Or both.
[00:27:53] Speaker B: Or both. Why? Why not? Well, one of us. One of us. One of them's a Jesus and one of them's a Jesus tail.
[00:27:59] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, pretty much. Only if Jesus killed kids.
I mean, here wasn't Space Jesus. There's a. Those Mr. Plinket videos where he talks about order 66 that you like that you think so funny. He's like, how order six isn't enough isn't. Yeah, it sounds like there aren't many orders, but order 666 is six too. Too many, too evil. But on one of those videos, he'd always say, like, what is he, Space Jesus talking about Darth Vader?
[00:28:30] Speaker B: Yeah, well, but we do. We all know that Space Jesus is actually Obi Wan Kenobi. He looks the part, Johnny.
[00:28:36] Speaker A: He does look the part. Qui Gon Jinn kind of looks like Jesus too.
He sure does.
[00:28:43] Speaker B: He sure does. Now that I think about it. Lots of. Lots of. Lots of space Jesuses.
[00:28:47] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, it'd be more interesting if Jesus killed kids like Anakin.
[00:28:55] Speaker B: I think that's. I think that's for a different podcast, Johnny.
[00:29:00] Speaker A: Dude, it's just so funny that, like, everyone loves Anakin, but he murdered a bunch of kids.
[00:29:05] Speaker B: Yeah, he was a piece of shit. And he was a moody fucking asshole. And he was a dick.
[00:29:11] Speaker A: Well, we'll find out on April 25th when we see Revenge of the Sith in theaters.
[00:29:15] Speaker B: Yeah, this will be my second time seeing it in theaters and probably my second time seeing it at all.
I don't think I've ever seen it at home.
[00:29:25] Speaker A: I believe I watched it five times in theaters.
[00:29:29] Speaker B: Oh, dang.
[00:29:29] Speaker A: I mean, you know, I saw episode one nine times in theaters, David. I've actually now seen it ten because I saw it once on the re release.
[00:29:36] Speaker B: Ooh, nice.
[00:29:37] Speaker A: People were driving me to this.
I was a child. I was driving myself to see the Phantom Menace. Who are these adults taking me to? The Phantom Menace? Nine times.
[00:29:46] Speaker B: I drove myself to episode three, though. I did too, because I arrived late, and the only seat left for me was in the very front row. And it was a terrible experience.
[00:29:57] Speaker A: Oh, my God. Yeah, that was packed. Yeah, I remember that night that movie came out. I waited in line for 12 hours to my friends.
[00:30:03] Speaker B: Oh, geez. Oh, that's way too long. I can't do that.
[00:30:07] Speaker A: We got there at noon and the movie started at midnight.
[00:30:10] Speaker B: That's dedication.
[00:30:11] Speaker A: We had really good seats.
[00:30:12] Speaker B: That's excellent.
[00:30:14] Speaker A: And that was back before you could reserve seats. Yeah, you just had to run in there and grab.
[00:30:18] Speaker B: This time, this time we're gonna be lazy and we're Just gonna reserve some seats, huh?
[00:30:22] Speaker A: Yeah, of course, if we can.
[00:30:23] Speaker B: Unless it's at the Music Box. The music Box ain't got reversed. Oh, wait, no, they do. Do they?
[00:30:27] Speaker A: No.
[00:30:28] Speaker B: No, they don't.
[00:30:29] Speaker A: They don't.
[00:30:30] Speaker B: Yeah, they don't. Music Box.
[00:30:32] Speaker A: Neither does the Logan.
[00:30:33] Speaker B: Music Box just got new seats. Like, awarded. It just got awarded. Like one of the best classic cinema or one of like the most beautiful movie theater in the. Like that I believe it. Or one of the most beautiful. It's a great place to watch a movie.
[00:30:49] Speaker A: Yeah. I love Music Box. We saw. We saw the Monkey together last week for my birthday.
[00:30:54] Speaker B: Yeah, we did so good. That movie. That movie was almost as. As disgusting and violent as this book is.
[00:31:01] Speaker A: I mean, pretty much it was on par.
So, yeah, these demon guys crucify Javi against the barn and then they slip back together.
[00:31:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:31:10] Speaker A: And they rejoin to form this man, this mysterious man with the red eyes.
[00:31:14] Speaker B: Yeah. And he. He. He gives Tobias a warning. And he says that from the very moment you changed into the new you, a door has been opened that can't be closed again. He says, I am everyone and no one. I am everywhere. And yet you can't see me unless I want to be seen.
[00:31:30] Speaker A: Sounds a lot like the.
The walking dude. Old Randall Flagg.
[00:31:35] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. He's in the dark tower. If. If this guy ends up with a little have a nice day pin, I'm gonna ship bricks.
[00:31:43] Speaker A: Yeah. If he ends up dying in a really weird way, I mean, he is.
[00:31:47] Speaker B: He is the man. He is the man in black. And he is fleeing across a desert.
[00:31:52] Speaker A: He is. And the gunslinger may follow him.
[00:31:54] Speaker B: Yeah, definitely.
[00:31:56] Speaker A: And he warns him. He's like, hey, look, if you survive the night, head southwest and see a man named Wyatt King. He can help you find your precious Amy.
[00:32:04] Speaker B: Tobias is like, what do you know about my sister? Who in hell are you?
[00:32:08] Speaker A: Happy Trails.
[00:32:10] Speaker B: That reminds me of like when Walmart used to close. They would always play Happy Trails to get people out of the store.
[00:32:17] Speaker A: Seriously?
[00:32:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:19] Speaker A: That's cuz.
[00:32:20] Speaker B: Everybody. Everybody. As soon as it came on, everyone would be like, the fuck is this song? Ah.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Was it like a. Like a MIDI version or was it like.
[00:32:28] Speaker B: That was just the regular version. People just hate the song Happy Trails.
[00:32:32] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I love it. Never really thought about it, but I.
[00:32:35] Speaker B: Mean, it's not as. It's not as bad as the Indian love song and the Mars attacks that makes their heads explode. That's an all timer in this vein. I hate with a passion that fucking. I don't want to Set the World on Fire song that they use for any sort of Fallout based post apocalyptic series.
[00:32:55] Speaker A: Fallout.
[00:32:55] Speaker B: It's a terrible song. Stop playing it. Fuck.
[00:32:58] Speaker A: I don't want to set the world on fire.
What's wrong with that?
[00:33:06] Speaker B: It's overused for what it is.
[00:33:08] Speaker A: It is overused. There's some better ones. The video games have tons of songs though.
[00:33:12] Speaker B: Yeah. They could have used it the one time and that's fine. But now everybody's like, this is the song you have to have for a mid century post atomic fallout type show. And it's like, no, choose a new song, please.
[00:33:25] Speaker A: There's a bunch of the video games. They have like radio stations you can listen to.
[00:33:28] Speaker B: I have a friend who just got a pip boy that has a built in radio on it.
[00:33:32] Speaker A: Are you serious?
[00:33:33] Speaker B: Yeah. It's fucking dope.
[00:33:36] Speaker A: That's cool.
[00:33:37] Speaker B: It's like, it's like this big. It takes up like half of his forearm.
[00:33:41] Speaker A: My favorite Fallout song is probably one called Atom Bomb Baby. Atom bomb baby. Little atom bomb. It's really good. That's funny, the songs, man.
[00:33:52] Speaker B: Yeah. So. So Tobias is just hanging there and then these two big white wolves come up and just like, like, huh, huh, huh. And Tobias tells them to pull. So they grab his cloak and they. Oh geez, Johnny. Oh geez.
[00:34:09] Speaker A: They pull his hand and his.
[00:34:12] Speaker B: Because this guy stabbed the knife through the middle of his palm and it just like rips out between the fingers. Oh God.
[00:34:20] Speaker A: He just like bifurcates his fucking hand.
[00:34:22] Speaker B: Oh.
[00:34:23] Speaker A: Which is seems really painful.
[00:34:26] Speaker B: Yeah, it doesn't seem for.
[00:34:28] Speaker A: Hey for you, as Bane would say.
[00:34:33] Speaker B: And then the wolves drag him inside and he passes out for, for a little bit. And while he is unconscious, we flash to Johnny.
[00:34:43] Speaker A: What?
[00:34:43] Speaker B: We're flashing to old Chi town. Look at that.
[00:34:46] Speaker A: Chicago, baby.
[00:34:48] Speaker B: Yeah, the train station. Hog Butcher of the world.
[00:34:51] Speaker A: The big town full of meat, right?
[00:34:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:54] Speaker A: The windy city.
[00:34:56] Speaker B: The windy city.
[00:34:57] Speaker A: The second city.
[00:34:58] Speaker B: The city of big shouldies.
[00:34:59] Speaker A: The city of big shoulders. I knew I was shouldies.
I knew I was missing one. The city with big shoulders. I like that one.
[00:35:06] Speaker B: We should rewrite the poem to be the city of big shouldies.
[00:35:14] Speaker A: Good old Chicago. Yeah, they're in Chicago. In the even older west. Yeah, it's a flashback.
[00:35:20] Speaker B: Yeah. And we got, we got Tobias and his sister saying goodbye to their papa because he's about to get on the train for some business. You know, he's sitting there, he's. He's hugging him. He's telling them to never remember. Never forget the Power of family.
And when you are two, you are one, basically.
And then. And then their mother comes by and is like, hey, kids, go hang out with your uncle for a second. I gotta say goodbye to your father in private.
[00:35:49] Speaker A: Hubba, hubba.
[00:35:53] Speaker B: And as. As the.
As they are separating, this. This guy who just snatched a bag is just running through the crowd.
[00:36:04] Speaker A: Skipped over the really creepy moment where they, in unison say this weird poem about being a brother.
[00:36:09] Speaker B: Yeah, I did. Intentionally.
It's a lot of words. Holy crap.
[00:36:14] Speaker A: No, it's just like. It's just so funny that they say to unison. It's like this giant paragraph. Yeah, we tried to do it as our opening quote, but it was impossible.
No one would have gotten past it much in the episode.
[00:36:28] Speaker B: Yes. Zero stars.
[00:36:30] Speaker A: Zero stars.
[00:36:31] Speaker B: And then, you know, as soon as, as soon as this guy passes by, this cop is like. Or this police officer, they call him a constable, shoots the guy right in the back. And during the ensuing, accidentally clips Tobias and Amy's father on the shoulder. His name is Thomas.
Thomas Healy.
I believe Thomas Healy is a time traveler from old timey Chicago. And then we get the. A doctor can be by in 35 minutes, but the train will be gone by then, Johnny.
[00:37:05] Speaker A: What's he gonna do?
[00:37:06] Speaker B: What's he gonna do? And then this. This man shows up. His name is Zebulon Kane. And I don't know if you. You noticed this, Johnny, but he is holding aloft the very bag what was snatched by this guy.
[00:37:22] Speaker A: Ah, this one bag.
[00:37:24] Speaker B: They very, very, very intentionally are making sure you know that this is Zebulon Kane's bag. So I wonder if there might be some nefariousness going on here.
[00:37:33] Speaker A: I mean, the way they introduce him, it seems like he's gonna be coming back. So.
[00:37:37] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, so. So Zebulun Cain is a black man and a doctor with a degree from Glasgow University.
[00:37:45] Speaker A: And yeah, this racist ass constable is like, oh, there's an actual doctor.
[00:37:50] Speaker B: He's like, oh, get out of here. And. And Thomas and his wife are like, no, if there's a doctor here, let's just use the doctor.
And so, so Zebulon Kane patches Thomas up, gives him a nice little history of black men as Doctors in the. In the United States. Both of whom graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School, because there's, to date in this book, two of them. And then, and then Amy starts being like, glasgow is in Scotland, which is part of the United Kingdom. And Tobias is like this. This motherfucker. Listen to this. Listen to this, smarty pants. Yeah.
And Zebulon's like, y'all remind me of my brother. Fought like cats and dogs, but nothing could come between us.
[00:38:40] Speaker A: Wonder whose brother is.
[00:38:42] Speaker B: I think that might be important.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: I think so.
[00:38:45] Speaker B: Thomas appreciates, Expresses his appreciation for Zebulon being there and patching him up. And he's like, hey, you know what? If you need any further assistance on that on the train ride, I'll be in the. I'll be in the back. The back train. Because I'm also going.
The colored car. We refer to it as which.
[00:39:04] Speaker A: Not we, not you and I in the book.
[00:39:06] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's.
[00:39:09] Speaker A: To be clear.
[00:39:10] Speaker B: To be clear. Yes.
[00:39:11] Speaker A: Fucking just to be clear.
[00:39:14] Speaker B: This is. This is something.
So when I. When I read historical fiction, unless there's a large amount of anachronism, I kind of can't get into it because accurate historical fiction has to take great pains to remind you how fucking terrible humans have been to each other forever. And it's just like, I don't wanna. I don't wanna deal with that. I wanna. I don't wanna deal with that. So it's an unfortunate fact of this time. And nowadays the only colored car I want to hear about is the red line, the blue line, the green line, the purple line, the brown line.
[00:39:54] Speaker A: I want to hear about a red cyber truck.
[00:39:59] Speaker B: So Tobias. Tobias, Amy, their mom and their uncle wave goodbye as the train pulls out of the station. Tobias and Amy are talking about how they're going to be together forever. They'll never be separated. Nothing will ever separate us. Nothing and no one. And then we see reflected Intobias's eyes, a woman, shadowy figure. And a fire.
[00:40:24] Speaker A: Yes.
And then we realize this has been kind of like a dream of the gunslingers.
[00:40:30] Speaker B: Yeah. Where we see a vision towards him. Yeah. Walking towards him, disheveled and red eyed, walking out of a burning house looking like a Deadite. Yeah. She looks like somebody read the Necronomicon. Nearer.
[00:40:46] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:40:48] Speaker B: And then we get the opening, opening quote.
[00:40:51] Speaker A: That dream you carry in your heart is the only fire you have left, Tobias.
[00:40:56] Speaker B: Jesus, release me. Let me go. And then her face just floats off like. Like it doesn't so much. It like blows back. So it's like. It's like it got hit by a. By a fire and. And a massive fan.
And then. Gunslinger, Gunslinger gas. Awake. He's in a very dirty, very dirty cabin that is.
Tables are overturned, there's blood everywhere.
[00:41:26] Speaker A: He's just like, how am I still alive?
[00:41:28] Speaker B: Yeah. And he's like, there's no bodies, but there's a hell of a lot of loot hanging around.
I like a mine now.
[00:41:39] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:41:39] Speaker B: Because I guess that's. That's the rule of the Old West, Johnny. If nobody else has claims on it, currently, it's yours.
[00:41:46] Speaker A: Yep.
And also the rules is you could trade a gun for a nice shiny doorknob.
I feel like doorknobs were worth a lot of money back in the day.
[00:41:55] Speaker B: I mean, being able to close those doors, very important.
[00:41:59] Speaker A: I just always think of Tom Sawyer. There's, like a part where a kid trades a doorknob to, like. He's like, if you let me paint the fence, I'll give you this doorknob. And he's like, hell, yeah.
[00:42:08] Speaker B: Hell, yeah.
[00:42:10] Speaker A: Wild kids trading doorknobs. When did Tom Sawyer take place? That was like the 1800s.
[00:42:17] Speaker B: Yeah. It would have been just prior to the Civil War, because I think. I think Huckleberry Finn takes place after Tom Sawyer, and that takes place at the beginning of the Civil War.
[00:42:30] Speaker A: Okay, nice.
[00:42:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:42:32] Speaker A: Good book?
[00:42:33] Speaker B: Very good. I don't. I don't. I don't remember much of it, but Percival Everett did recently write a retelling of Huckleberry Finn. Finn from the point of view of Jim.
[00:42:47] Speaker A: James.
[00:42:48] Speaker B: Charles James. It's fucking incredible.
[00:42:50] Speaker A: Really.
[00:42:50] Speaker B: It's. It's so good. It's hilarious and heartbreaking. It's good. It's very good.
[00:42:57] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:42:58] Speaker B: Also eminently readable, which is important for things that are difficult subject matter.
[00:43:04] Speaker A: That's true. I really liked his movie.
[00:43:07] Speaker B: I haven't seen it yet.
[00:43:09] Speaker A: American fiction.
[00:43:10] Speaker B: American fiction.
[00:43:11] Speaker A: It's good.
[00:43:12] Speaker B: But Percival Everett's a really good writer.
[00:43:13] Speaker A: Dude, you wouldn't sell him, right?
[00:43:15] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. He's. He's just like. He's just this old guy and he's like, I don't know what you're talking about. I just write some books every once in a while. He's. He's funny. He's. He's. He's a character. And so while Tobias is getting the horse ready, he sees a trail of blood. Johnny.
[00:43:32] Speaker A: Trail of a river of blood.
[00:43:34] Speaker B: Yeah. And he's like, huh. I guess. I guess the wolves had a good time.
[00:43:38] Speaker A: Yep. The wolves dragged away all the bodies.
[00:43:40] Speaker B: Yep. And he's like, well, all right. Horse to town. I like. I. I like the.
[00:43:45] Speaker A: I like how he just says horse town. No, he just says horse town.
[00:43:49] Speaker B: Yeah. I like that. He doesn't. Like. He doesn't get up there and go, yeah, and, like, do some kick. He's just like, come on, bud. We got to go do this.
[00:43:56] Speaker A: Let's take me to town. Then we cut to some pretty scandalous page for spawn here, David.
[00:44:02] Speaker B: Yeah. So the very, very quickly, we learned that they're prostitutes at the local brothel.
[00:44:08] Speaker A: Sex workers. Come on, David. It's fucking 20, 25.
Yeah, I'm teasing you.
[00:44:15] Speaker B: They're giving themselves. They're. They're. They're. They're washing themselves, Johnny.
[00:44:20] Speaker A: Yeah, they're like the sirens in the river and. Oh, brother, where art thou?
[00:44:24] Speaker B: Yeah, that's. I was literally thinking that that's probably why they're situated the way they are, because they very much look like sirens. Then they're. They're talking about all of the business that they've had recently. They start talking about the madam. We got some gossip. I heard that Madame Griselda is 48 years old from one of them. And the other one's like, she ain't a day over 25, but I heard she brokered a deal with the devil.
[00:44:48] Speaker A: And then the horse approaches.
[00:44:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:52] Speaker A: With Tobias on his back.
[00:44:54] Speaker B: They think he's. They're like, he sure seems like he's dead.
[00:44:56] Speaker A: Yeah. He looks like a fucking skeleton.
[00:44:58] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. Looks to be a circus performer. And they're like, okay, let's take him back to the Silk Garter and call the doctor. And then we cut to Javi sitting up in bed at the Silk Garter. And I, like, even if the gunslinger can have roles, so can you. That's. That's body positivity, Johnny.
[00:45:17] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. He's not, like, hobbies look so fucking ripped.
[00:45:19] Speaker B: He's so fucking rough. He's. He's sitting up in bed, and he's got. He's got. He's got a little tummy. A little tummy's fine. Don't worry about it, guys. And then he wakes up, and they send Madame Griselda to. To attend him. She's, like, throwing herself at him, and he's like, hey, come on. Come on. I'll give you some money for helping patch me up, but I gotta get out of here. Come on.
She's. She's giving him the hard sell that a weaker man would have fallen for. Johnny. He's like, I don't.
I need to find Wyatt King. I gotta find my sister. And she's like, king, I know King. Trust me. You want to be mild. You want miles between yourself and that man.
[00:45:58] Speaker A: Wonder why.
[00:46:00] Speaker B: Yeah. And Javi starts saying, well, I need to. I need to go. What you got against me? Why are you still holding me? Here. And then she turns around and has, like, sharpened teeth and red eyes.
[00:46:12] Speaker A: She turns into a demon.
[00:46:14] Speaker B: Yeah. She says, this ain't personal. It's a favor for someone else. I hope you understand.
[00:46:19] Speaker A: Her speech bubble gets all weird.
[00:46:21] Speaker B: Yeah, I like the. The demon speech bubbles that Tomo is putting together.
[00:46:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:46:27] Speaker B: And Javi says, I'm not in the mood to understand. And then just starts blasting, just blows her away.
Oh, it's just so good. She falls out the window under this hail of bullets. He's like, man, I'm gonna need some answers. And you can hear from down in the street there's just like the sounds of local people being ripped apart by this demon lady. And then he sees the carnage and he's like, ah, fuck. And he starts immediately reloading his revolvers.
[00:46:56] Speaker A: Yeah. Dear God.
[00:46:58] Speaker B: Then there's thumpings and. And knocks and bumps at the door. He very much like Ash Williams. Johnny, come and get it.
[00:47:09] Speaker A: Come get some. And then bam. Through the door, bust the entire brothel. And they're all demons.
[00:47:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:16] Speaker A: Or vampires or something.
[00:47:17] Speaker B: It's got like. Like a. Like a snake tongue. Oh, boy.
[00:47:22] Speaker A: Oh, God.
[00:47:23] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:47:23] Speaker A: Like a bunch of Deadites.
[00:47:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:26] Speaker A: And it says, next Bordello Bloodbath.
[00:47:29] Speaker B: Oh, that's so badass. Bordello Bloodbath.
[00:47:32] Speaker A: Yeah. This is great. It reminds me of west of Sundown. Did you read that?
[00:47:36] Speaker B: Yeah, I did. Oh, man, that's. That book was great.
[00:47:39] Speaker A: I know it's short lived, but.
[00:47:41] Speaker B: Oh, it had like all the. It had like a Frankenstein's monster that becomes a. A priest.
[00:47:46] Speaker A: There's an invisible man was in it.
[00:47:49] Speaker B: Yeah. It had a vampire. Vampire who. Who takes over the. The corruption, local saloon and turns it into a proper business that takes care of people.
[00:48:00] Speaker A: Tim Seeley, right?
[00:48:02] Speaker B: Yeah, Tim Seeley and, oh, Jim Terry.
[00:48:06] Speaker A: Yeah, I got to meet them actually. A couple of.
[00:48:08] Speaker B: Couple of local boys.
[00:48:09] Speaker A: That's right.
Chicago. And I sound like a target lady.
There's a great target commercial. Oh, yeah, she does say that. She's like, his name was Howard, he's from Chicago. She's talking about a pigeon.
[00:48:25] Speaker B: Nice. I like a little pigeon. Pigeons. There was a. There was a pigeon in the. The train station the other day underground. It was just flying along the platform.
[00:48:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:35] Speaker B: Everybody was like, ah, man, I love pigeons. I love this. I love this gunslinger skull that they're ending the issues with now.
[00:48:45] Speaker A: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
[00:48:46] Speaker B: It's a great little logo.
[00:48:48] Speaker A: It's like the gunslinger with the hall hat all surrounded by bullets.
[00:48:51] Speaker B: Yeah. And there's bullet holes in the hat and the skull.
[00:48:54] Speaker A: Is that the chapel skull?
[00:48:57] Speaker B: It kind of looks a little like the chapel skull.
[00:49:00] Speaker A: It does a little bit. Surely not.
[00:49:04] Speaker B: Surely not. I'm sure it's just a coincidence. I'm sure it's because skulls kind of all look the same.
[00:49:08] Speaker A: Surely not.
[00:49:10] Speaker B: And then we got.
[00:49:11] Speaker A: I was looking at my, like, most played on my, like heavy rotation, they call it on Apple Music. Like your most recent. I realized they're all bands with skeletons in them because it was the Misfits, Oko Boy Go and Ghost. And I was like, what the.
[00:49:27] Speaker B: Johnny, you gotta.
[00:49:28] Speaker A: You gotta type like skeletons. What other skeleton bands is Slipknot with any of Skeletons?
[00:49:37] Speaker B: No, none of Slipknot skeletons. Coal chamber for a while had a lot of skeleton imagery.
[00:49:43] Speaker A: Okay. I'll have to check them out if I love it. I like the skeletons. Skeletons are funny.
[00:49:49] Speaker B: Skeletons are fucking cool. They remind us that. Hey, that's us.
[00:49:53] Speaker A: We're just skeleton wearing a skeleton.
[00:49:56] Speaker B: Have you ever. Have you been to the. The Museum of Surgical Science?
[00:50:00] Speaker A: No.
[00:50:01] Speaker B: Over on Lakeshore. Oh. They have a trepidated skull collection. What does that mean? Awesome. It's so trepanations. Where you cut a hole in the skull for either medical or spiritual reasons.
[00:50:13] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:50:14] Speaker B: They've just got a cabinet full of skulls with holes in them. It's awesome.
[00:50:19] Speaker A: They reference that in Ghostbusters and always confuse you as a kid because he's like, remember that one time I tried to drill a hole in my head? And he was like. So it would have worked if you had to stop me.
[00:50:30] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. His skull could have been part of this collection. Gentlemen.
[00:50:33] Speaker A: Egon Skull.
[00:50:36] Speaker B: Egon Skull. Sounds like a band name.
[00:50:38] Speaker A: It does.
[00:50:39] Speaker B: We got a spawn Call of Duty toy ad there.
[00:50:42] Speaker A: Yeah. I didn't know these. I didn't realize they came out with these Call of Duty figures. I guess I haven't been keeping up the deviant figures coming out though. I might have to come out of retirement for.
[00:50:52] Speaker B: Which ones?
[00:50:53] Speaker A: The deviant figures. I think the pre orders go up in March.
[00:50:57] Speaker B: Oh, hell yeah. I'm gonna have to.
[00:50:58] Speaker A: You're gonna have to get it. I'm gonna have to get one.
[00:51:02] Speaker B: It's so cool. And maybe Erica Schultz won't be too scared to touch this one. Probably.
[00:51:09] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:10] Speaker B: I don't. I don't blame her. I wouldn't trust myself with a one of one prototype.
I'm a clumsy man. That thing would have been broken in 3.5 seconds. We got new generation, new stories. New you add with. Speaking of Rat City. Rat City. There Yep, yep, yep, yep.
[00:51:30] Speaker A: Same twitch. Violator.
[00:51:32] Speaker B: All that Samurai. Then we got Mortal Kombat. One toy ad.
[00:51:37] Speaker A: One that was like the reboot. Yeah, it's Sub Zero.
[00:51:42] Speaker B: Yeah, it's Sub Zero.
[00:51:43] Speaker A: Who's your guy on Mortal Kombat? David?
[00:51:47] Speaker B: I always liked.
So in. I liked Scorpion and.
[00:51:52] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:51:52] Speaker B: In the original Mortal Kombat, because I liked the. Get over here.
[00:51:57] Speaker A: Yeah, I love scorpions.
[00:51:59] Speaker B: That's. That's great. And then when Reptile came out. Reptile is my guy because he was Scorpion, but green and always. I'm gonna go for the green guy.
[00:52:07] Speaker A: Okay. Reptile, huh? I was always Scorpion. Of course.
I like Johnny Cage because he had my name.
[00:52:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:17] Speaker A: So I play as him.
And I liked Katana that she had those big, like, fanboys in the second one.
[00:52:24] Speaker B: I think those are so awesome.
I don't know if I mentioned this before, but Covid really, really made me remember that I had a thing for Katana as a child because she's also got the mask.
[00:52:39] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:52:40] Speaker B: Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Masked Faces. Johnny.
[00:52:43] Speaker A: David.
So scandalous.
[00:52:49] Speaker B: I was. I was allowed to use Raiden a lot because I was bad.
[00:52:53] Speaker A: I guess I used Raiden.
[00:52:55] Speaker B: So using Raiden in his op, sometimes it didn't help me because I was bad.
[00:53:01] Speaker A: You attacked my fighters before the tournament. I love Christopher Lambert as Raiden in the movie.
[00:53:07] Speaker B: I haven't seen the original movie in a very long time.
[00:53:09] Speaker A: Dude, it's good. It's. I say. I'm trying to think. There's been some newer ones.
[00:53:14] Speaker B: Shit, the one that came out in 2020.
[00:53:16] Speaker A: No, no, I know, but I'm saying newer video game movies. I say it's probably the best video game movie, but I feel like there's been, like, a. The Mario movie is pretty fucking good.
That good. I don't know why I said, fuck it. It was pretty good. It wasn't, like, pretty fucking good. It was, like, pretty good. Yeah. And then, I mean, I would consider, like, Scott Pilgrim, like a video game movie, but it's not actually, like, based on a video game, but it has the feeling of a video game. So, yeah, Mortal Kombat original might still be the best video game movie.
[00:53:46] Speaker B: Nice. Excellent.
[00:53:48] Speaker A: Or Street Fighter.
[00:53:49] Speaker B: I haven't seen Street Fighter either.
[00:53:51] Speaker A: It's ridiculous.
[00:53:53] Speaker B: And then we got a Image classic set on the back, and then that's. That's the end of the issue. So that's Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger Number two, Johnny.
[00:54:03] Speaker A: A deadly tale indeed.
[00:54:05] Speaker B: The deadliest of tales.
Oh, man. Man, the monkey was hilarious. I love that.
[00:54:29] Speaker A: It was good. I really love the lady.
[00:54:32] Speaker B: The lady exploding in the pool.
[00:54:33] Speaker A: That was the best.
I. Or the sleeping bag was, like, pretty grizzly. Shoes off, as they say. David.
[00:54:40] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Shoes. Yeah, Shoes off. Definitely.
[00:54:42] Speaker A: Shoes squished.
[00:54:44] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:54:45] Speaker A: Yeah. I really thought the monkey was fun. I didn't love long legs, so I was a little hesitant because it's. Osgood Perkins, same director was.
[00:54:53] Speaker B: Was long legs as ridiculous. Did it have.
[00:54:57] Speaker A: It was much more serious. I mean, it was ridiculous, but it was much more serious.
[00:55:00] Speaker B: But okay, because. Because that's. I loved that the, like, within it. The characters were taking everything seriously in the movie, but the movie wasn't taking itself seriously. And that's one of the things I think I liked most about it. Like the cheerleaders.
[00:55:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
Well, it just reminded you. It reminded me of a Stephen King story. Like, it was wacky. It had his, like, idiosyncrasy.
[00:55:26] Speaker B: Idiosyncrasies.
[00:55:27] Speaker A: Idiosyncrasies. Thank you. It was fun. I like the voiceover.
[00:55:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:55:32] Speaker A: Dio James, the actor was really good.
[00:55:34] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:55:35] Speaker A: No one wasn't too bad looking on the eyes either.
[00:55:37] Speaker B: No.
As I said that night, he wears stubble well.
[00:55:41] Speaker A: Good thing. Handsome man. Yeah. I was like, damn. All right, I'll keep an eye on this guy. He's kind of like a hotter Justin Theroux. I don't know if Justin Theroux is pretty hot, so I don't want to say. I don't want to say that.
[00:55:52] Speaker B: You could say he's like a younger Justin Theroux because Justin Theroux has been around for a while.
[00:55:56] Speaker A: He has. You forget he's been around for a while.
[00:55:58] Speaker B: This guy seems a little. A little younger.
[00:56:00] Speaker A: Justin Therose got that huge hog, though. You ever seen those pictures?
[00:56:04] Speaker B: No, I haven't.
[00:56:05] Speaker A: Him running in gray sweatpants. Oh, my God.
[00:56:07] Speaker B: No bonks.
[00:56:12] Speaker A: So next up, we have Sam Twitch number nine. Sam Fish case files number nine, to be precise. And the COVID opens, as it says, with a top on a banner on top of the COVID that says, a new case begins part one.
[00:56:26] Speaker B: And was there only one cover for this? It seems like there's only one cover artist. Jenny.
[00:56:31] Speaker A: Correct.
[00:56:32] Speaker B: And it's Thaddeus Roebuck. And it's wonderful. It's. It's the most noir cover ever.
[00:56:40] Speaker A: Yep. You got Sam Twitch. Twitch is like a shadow in the background. Amy is gone, and Sam's just smoking a cigarette.
[00:56:48] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:56:49] Speaker A: Looking pretty. Pretty cool.
[00:56:51] Speaker B: It's a great cover.
[00:56:52] Speaker A: Yeah. It seems like it's the appropriate tone for this new story. Too.
[00:56:57] Speaker B: Mm. This. This new. This new case is interesting. It's urban, it's wild.
[00:57:05] Speaker A: So let's get into it. Let's crack this case.
[00:57:08] Speaker B: I want to open it up. And we'll give credit where credit is due, Johnny. As we do, we got plot by Todd McFarlane and script by Todd McFarlane and Jordan Burrell. Thomas Nachchlik does the art. FCO Plasencia and Sheila Saldana are doing the colors. Lettering by Tom Wozakowski. Ooh, another Double Tom Father episode. Johnny.
[00:57:28] Speaker A: Double Tom Father. Very different styles, too, with his lettering between these two issues.
[00:57:33] Speaker B: Like. Like polar opposites, Night and Day, we covered the COVID Creative director is Todd McFarlane, and editor in chief is Thomas Healey. And a new case begins, Part one.
[00:57:45] Speaker A: Is this a new case begins or part one yet, David? I can't tell.
[00:57:50] Speaker B: I don't know. I feel like. I feel like there's a missing part of this case before this.
But we. We start in media Chase.
Twitch's. Twitches chased down a perp down an alley, and he's got. He's got his bullseye right on this guy's forehead, but this guy is holding the hostage. And Twitch says, I can't miss and won't. Been tracking this guy too long. He's too close, moving too much for a clean shot. And Twitch is like, hey, hey, hey. Hold on. Let the lady go. We can talk about just us. And so he puts his gun down, and the perp is, like, fine. And throws the lady at him.
[00:58:32] Speaker A: Purp. Who is dressed like Travis Bickle.
[00:58:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:58:37] Speaker A: From Taxi Driver.
[00:58:38] Speaker B: Yeah. With his mohawk and his disheveledness. Not as.
Not as. Not as, like, gaunt and hasn't eaten in a week. As.
[00:58:48] Speaker A: No, he does. He's not as haunted as Travis Bickle. I would say Taxi Driver is a good movie, though. You ever seen it?
[00:58:58] Speaker B: I think I saw half of it.
And then the. Because I think I rented a disc from Netflix when Netflix was still doing discs.
[00:59:09] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:59:09] Speaker B: And I think halfway through, the disc was ruined.
[00:59:12] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[00:59:13] Speaker B: And I just never circled back to finish it. So I've only.
[00:59:16] Speaker A: That's so funny. I. I also got that in the mail on a disc. It was like my movie. I was like my. When I was in my movie homework phase of when I had Netflix in the mail, it was like, well, I'm doing my movie homework and watch all these big, important movies.
[00:59:27] Speaker B: And did you also have one that had a big scratch happen?
[00:59:30] Speaker A: Yeah. No, I scratched it.
Then you got it later in the mail.
I scratched on purpose. I Still own a Netflix movie? I have Inherent Vice on Blu Ray that I just kept.
[00:59:41] Speaker B: Nice.
[00:59:42] Speaker A: If you kept one every once in a while and said it was lost in the mail and do anything. So.
[00:59:45] Speaker B: Yeah, it's almost. It's almost like there's a reason they got rid of their DVD service.
[00:59:50] Speaker A: It's also how I got my copy of Crime Wave.
[00:59:52] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Nice.
Do you like. Have you seen Crime Wave?
[00:59:57] Speaker A: You can't on dvd. Too bad. You can't.
[01:00:00] Speaker B: Nobody has. So Twitch. Twitch is like, lady, ma'am, are you okay? And she's like, I think so. And he's like, okay, awesome. I'm gonna go out to this guy. So he's yelling, freeze. And he's got his. He's aiming right at the guy's shoulder. And so he fires. And then Johnny hits him with a hat where he was aiming. That goes right through his eye.
[01:00:22] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:00:23] Speaker B: I mean, I can understand missing by that much. No, Twitch. Absolutely not.
[01:00:29] Speaker A: He never would.
[01:00:30] Speaker B: Never would. And so this guy is just, like, slowly bleeding out on the ground. And Twitch says, what have I done?
[01:00:38] Speaker A: What have I done?
I'm always gonna drop that anytime. What have I done? I'm gonna drop that, Anakin.
[01:00:44] Speaker B: Okay.
[01:00:46] Speaker A: What have I done?
[01:00:48] Speaker B: What have I done? And so. So Twitch calls in backup. And then we are.
The backup shows up. And then we get, like, some. Some of the. The other officers talking about, he's cooperating, Purple's running, but still a threat. The detectives on the scene don't know Twitch from anybody because they work in a different precinct.
The hostage is singing his praises. So they're like, yeah, that's real good. And then we see. See Sam trying to give Twitch the pep talk, being like, don't. Don't. Don't beat yourself up, Twitch. You did the right thing. And Twitch is like, the right thing? I killed a man.
[01:01:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:01:27] Speaker B: And Sam's like, but you did your job. That's all that's important. It's very weird to see Sam being the voice of reason, not. Not used to it. And Sam's like, we'll get through this. And Twitch is like, I gotta call. I gotta call Helen. And the next day, Twitch is sent to mandatory therapy. And so we see him in the therapist's office. She's asking how he's doing, and he's like, I'm numb.
She's like, you were playing it in your mind? And he's like, nope. While he's replaying it in his mind.
[01:01:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:01:59] Speaker B: She's like, how did. How did yesterday start for you? Was it okay? And he was like, yeah, that's started. You know, it was a normal morning day starting.
[01:02:07] Speaker A: Pretty okie day with brisky morning munching. Then boom. Misa here, the Misa grabbing that Jedi, getting very, very scared.
What? That's how everyone days start, with a brisky morning munching.
David's laughing. You can't even hear him.
[01:02:23] Speaker B: Oh, boy, oh, boy.
[01:02:25] Speaker A: Gotta drop a jar jar on him.
[01:02:27] Speaker B: Gotta drop a jar jar. And we learned that that Twitch's brisky morning muncheon is having a fight with Helen.
[01:02:35] Speaker A: Yeah, a pretty intense fight.
[01:02:37] Speaker B: The. The. I. I don't know what is going on with the Todd father's characterization of Helen in this series. Yeah, I'm not quite sure I like it. It's kind of weird because he's like, we just can't afford to go to Hawaii. And she's like, what? Better if I was somebody else, he'd take me. Yeah.
[01:02:52] Speaker A: I was like, jesus Christ, where'd that come from? I thought they were, like, buried and happy.
[01:02:56] Speaker B: They've got, like, 12 kids.
[01:02:59] Speaker A: Well, I guess that's how it goes.
[01:03:00] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's just like, well, what about later in the day? Did anything weird happen? And the Twitch is saying, sorry, Al, I can't today, for anybody else in the world, would have been a wild occurrence. And he's like, yeah, no, that's stuff I do every day.
[01:03:17] Speaker A: Just talking to. Talking to a demon guy.
[01:03:21] Speaker B: After Twitch leaves therapy, Sam tries to catch up with him on the street. And he's like. He's, like, running after him.
[01:03:27] Speaker A: He's like, just gotta go.
[01:03:28] Speaker B: He's like, hang on, hang on. Stop.
Sam finally catches up to him. And then we've got this one panel of him just, like, bent over, being like, oh, Sam's like, I need you. I need you to know that I got your back, buddy. And Twitch is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, but. But it's my son's birthday, and I need to just fucking get out of here. While they're having this conversation, Twitch sees across the street, a shadowy figure, and he's like, is that guy that looking at me?
[01:03:59] Speaker A: He is.
[01:04:00] Speaker B: Sam breaks the tension with the greatest joke of all time.
[01:04:03] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, this is hilarious. Like, what the. It's such a Godfather thing.
[01:04:07] Speaker B: He's like, I heard they took your gun, so don't worry. I snuck one out for you. Pure dark chocolate.
[01:04:12] Speaker A: He tries to give him a chocolate gun.
[01:04:15] Speaker B: He's like, you could count with it. Just eat it or melt it in your hands. And he's like, belly laughing. He's having a good time. And Twitch is just not enthused. He's like, the fuck?
[01:04:25] Speaker A: Where do you think he got a chocolate gun?
[01:04:27] Speaker B: I don't know.
[01:04:28] Speaker A: I'm sure you can find it online.
[01:04:30] Speaker B: I mean, I think some. Some toys or not toy stores, some. Some candy stores might still have them, but I don't. I don't know.
[01:04:36] Speaker A: You get your chocolate gun and some candy cigarettes if you're real badass. Yeah, my parents wouldn't let me have.
[01:04:42] Speaker B: Candy cigarettes, obviously, for obvious reasons. Yeah, yeah.
[01:04:45] Speaker A: They shouldn't have made those.
[01:04:47] Speaker B: Yeah, I wasn't allowed to have them because they were pure sugar.
[01:04:51] Speaker A: What was the candy even in them?
[01:04:54] Speaker B: I think it was like. It was just like candy and like some wood to hold it together, I think.
[01:04:59] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[01:05:01] Speaker B: Some sort of hard. Hard drying gum.
[01:05:06] Speaker A: Yeah. I don't know. I just remember them, but I don't think I ever had any.
[01:05:10] Speaker B: It might. It might have been like the exact same thing as Smarties, only in cigarette form.
[01:05:14] Speaker A: Remember, the kids would smoke the Smarties. You remember that?
[01:05:17] Speaker B: I never knew anybody who tried to smoke a Smarties.
[01:05:20] Speaker A: We don't actually smoke it. They would just crush up the Smarties in the pack in like a powder. And you, like, puff on it. It looks like you're smoking.
[01:05:26] Speaker B: Oh, no, no, we never did that. Dang.
[01:05:27] Speaker A: That was. Must have been a Tulsa thing, man. Yeah, we did that. That was. I was all over Robert E. Lee elementary doing that.
[01:05:34] Speaker B: Can you imagine going to Robert E. Lee elementary and year of our Lord's 2025.
[01:05:40] Speaker A: We sang a song about his ass. It's no longer Robert E. Lee elementary.
[01:05:44] Speaker B: Is now Wanda grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi, and spent a lot of time reenacting at the home of Jefferson Davis. So. Oh, boy, it gets worse.
[01:05:56] Speaker A: But it's now called Council Oak. So it's no longer called Robert E. Lee. I think it's called Council Oak.
[01:06:03] Speaker B: A lateral move. It's a better name because it doesn't have the baggage, but it's not really a good name. Yeah, they could have come up with a better name than Council Oak.
[01:06:13] Speaker A: They should have just named after a different Lee, as they could keep calling.
[01:06:15] Speaker B: It Lee, or they could have named it after somebody who lived there rightfully. They got. They got hella tribes to choose name from, Johnny.
[01:06:24] Speaker A: That's true.
[01:06:26] Speaker B: At least five civilized ones that I can think of off the top of my head. I fucking hate having to refer to them as the five civilians. Civilized tribes. That's such a gross.
[01:06:34] Speaker A: Then don't but that's what they call that.
[01:06:36] Speaker B: Every. I grew up in Oklahoma, in Muskogee, and every. Everything is. That's. That's the only way they refer to them. These five. These five that. That were the first to. To be like, okay, we'll learn English. Were the only ones that were considered civilized. Fucking gross.
[01:06:55] Speaker A: Yeah, pretty gross.
[01:06:56] Speaker B: American history is nasty, Johnny. No, as we've. As we've been discovering this entire episode.
[01:07:04] Speaker A: Yeah, you're right. We learned about the Old west and the racist asses. And then. Yeah, yeah, my racist ass. Elementary school.
[01:07:11] Speaker B: Just racist asses everywhere. Everybody's asses ass.
[01:07:14] Speaker A: Everyone's asses. I mean, everyone's ass is racist.
[01:07:18] Speaker B: Well, we cut to the birthday party that Twitch was trying to get to. And it's a very different house than Twitch was living in in the last case, because he was living in, like, a downtown Manhattan condo.
[01:07:31] Speaker A: Yeah. What the different here and now.
[01:07:32] Speaker B: And now he's out in Astoria, Queens.
[01:07:34] Speaker A: He must have moved.
[01:07:36] Speaker B: Must have moved.
His son's son's talking about the ball Uncle Dennis got him. Green and black, like jets colors. Pretty cool, right?
[01:07:48] Speaker A: I had an orange and black soccer ball I thought was cool as hell.
[01:07:51] Speaker B: Honest. I had. There was one year for Christmas, I got a pack. It was a basketball, a soccer ball, and a football that were Looney Tunes characters.
[01:08:01] Speaker A: Oh, nice.
[01:08:02] Speaker B: And so my soccer ball was Looney Tunes. It was awesome.
[01:08:04] Speaker A: You joined Toon Squad.
[01:08:06] Speaker B: I think this. I think this was a couple years before Space Jam, actually.
[01:08:10] Speaker A: Yeah, sure. I remember. I remember.
[01:08:14] Speaker B: Used to love. Used to love going to the WB store.
[01:08:17] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what I had, like, a Looney Tunes shirt from there. The one at Six Flags?
[01:08:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:08:23] Speaker A: Is that what you're talking about?
[01:08:24] Speaker B: So there was. There was one in the mall.
[01:08:26] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[01:08:27] Speaker B: We would go to. Yeah, Wooden Hills had one.
[01:08:30] Speaker A: Maybe that's where I got it because I didn't have, like. I had like, a Looney Tunes shirt that was, like, embroidered. The characters, like, beaks and stuff were, like, embroidered.
[01:08:39] Speaker B: Oh, hell, yeah. That. That sounds. That. That does sound like a. Like a. Trying to not be too. Too touristy for sale at a. At a theme park type shirt, though.
[01:08:50] Speaker A: Yeah, I think I got it at Six Flags because they had the partnership with Warner Brothers. I don't know if they still do because the Looney Tunes were there and they had the Batman stuff.
[01:08:58] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know. I haven't been to a Six Flags in a very long time.
[01:09:01] Speaker A: That's true. Do you know that in Space Jam, 2, the Clockwork Orange guys are in the audience.
[01:09:07] Speaker B: Apparently Spawn is in space. Or Space Jam 2.
[01:09:11] Speaker A: That's ridiculous. Because it's Clockwork Orange guys.
[01:09:15] Speaker B: Yeah. Because it's just like every. Every property that's currently owned by Warner Brothers is shoehorned in there.
[01:09:20] Speaker A: Yeah. They didn't put anyone for the Devils. The movie. They hate that I love.
[01:09:25] Speaker B: I don't know, Johnny.
[01:09:26] Speaker A: I could put a nun in there. There probably is a nun in there. The nun's probably in there.
The nun, she's.
[01:09:33] Speaker B: She's coming out of a picture somewhere, Johnny. That's what she's.
[01:09:36] Speaker A: That's what she does in a really cool way. Yeah, the magazines in the second one was pretty cool.
[01:09:41] Speaker B: Yeah, that was. That was the best sequence of the entire movie. Was that the magazine review?
[01:09:45] Speaker A: I love? In the first one, they literally use, like, the blood of Christ to defeat her.
I'm pretty sure that's what it was. That's what the MacGuffin was. Is the black rice?
[01:09:54] Speaker B: Yeah, I think so. Because I think there was. It was like the reliquary from. From deep in the abandoned church.
[01:10:00] Speaker A: We're gonna have to go see that new one when it comes out.
[01:10:02] Speaker B: Yeah, you know. You know, I'll be there. It's. That's. That. That franchise within that overarching franchise is definitely the one with the most diminishing returns. The moment. But I'll still go to.
[01:10:16] Speaker A: Yeah, I. What is the new one called? Last Rights. I think the Conjuring Last Rights.
[01:10:22] Speaker B: O.
[01:10:23] Speaker A: The newest one.
[01:10:24] Speaker B: I don't know.
[01:10:25] Speaker A: The one that's not out yet. I'm pretty sure that's what it's called. So it's supposed to be the last one with them. I guess. Spoiler alert. He dies of a heart attack when he's like 80. I think.
[01:10:35] Speaker B: Sad.
[01:10:35] Speaker A: And he was a huckster in real life.
[01:10:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:10:39] Speaker A: Maybe not, though. I don't know. The Warrens might be right.
[01:10:42] Speaker B: I don't know. We'll see if there's an increase in paranormal activity now that they've had to disband the. The museum since they ran out of funding.
[01:10:51] Speaker A: Yeah. All those items.
[01:10:52] Speaker B: So Annabelle is back out in the world somewhere.
[01:10:54] Speaker A: Oh, my God, don't say that.
I thought I heard some scurrying behind me.
[01:11:01] Speaker B: Let's just hope it's mice.
[01:11:03] Speaker A: That's how I'm not bringing the monkey to people. Like, it's not like Chucky. It's like Annabelle.
[01:11:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:11:08] Speaker A: He doesn't, like, get up and move. I had a friend, Pablo, that I Used to work with. And he.
He was from Ecuador. And like, he didn't. English wasn't his first language, but, I mean, you know, whatever. But I just always remember he explaining to me that he didn't like Annabelle because she doesn't move. He said, it's a trick. He was like, it's a. It's a cheap trick. She doesn't actually move. I want to see her move. And I'm like, oh, I'm sorry.
[01:11:34] Speaker B: I think. I think a lot of Annabelle's power would be removed if you saw her walking around.
[01:11:38] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. It'd be stupid as hell.
[01:11:40] Speaker B: Cuz Like. Cuz that's the. That's the thing about Chucky is he has his. His most powerful. When.
When Tommy is like. He's fucking. It's this goddamn doll and everybody's like, ah, shut up, you little kid.
[01:11:54] Speaker A: Things. Andy.
[01:11:55] Speaker B: Andy. Tommy ain't fucking. Andy. That's right. Andy. Andy Dufresne. That's right. Andy.
You're not gonna correct me on saying the wrong Andy Kalani. Come on.
[01:12:07] Speaker A: I don't remember his last name. Which was Andy Dufresne.
[01:12:09] Speaker B: That's from Shawshank.
[01:12:11] Speaker A: Oh, okay. I don't know.
I only seen Shasha Tradition, like, one time.
[01:12:18] Speaker B: Child's Play was just on Pluto TV not too long ago. And it's fast. Fantastic movie.
[01:12:24] Speaker A: He's scared.
[01:12:25] Speaker B: Holy. It is so good.
[01:12:27] Speaker A: He's scary when he goes mean, man. He scared the shit out of me.
[01:12:30] Speaker B: I like. I like how many times they're able to get juice out of the. You're fucking telling me it's this goddamn toy? I don't fucking believe you. They do that like seven times.
[01:12:39] Speaker A: Then it just comes alive and fucking kills you.
[01:12:41] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's effective every time. It's great.
[01:12:44] Speaker A: He's so angry.
[01:12:45] Speaker B: They. They fucking burn him, and he's just, like, melting, and he's like.
[01:12:49] Speaker A: I like the second one where he puts the knife in his hands. It has a knife hand.
[01:12:54] Speaker B: Is the. The second one the. The foster home?
[01:12:57] Speaker A: Yes.
[01:12:58] Speaker B: And then the third one's like the military camp, correct? Yeah.
[01:13:01] Speaker A: The second one's probably my personal favorite. Just because the one I watched the most as a kid, it's the first one I saw. Anyway. I saw it on tbs, probably on Joe Bob Briggs.
[01:13:11] Speaker B: Well, I mean, the first one. The first one has a building I used to live in in the background, so I don't know.
[01:13:17] Speaker A: There you go.
[01:13:18] Speaker B: That's fine.
[01:13:19] Speaker A: I mean, I love the first one, too, but I just. The second one's my Personal.
[01:13:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:13:23] Speaker A: Favorite. It ends in the toy factory. I have a toy boy, you know.
[01:13:27] Speaker B: Yeah. Gotcha.
[01:13:29] Speaker A: So, speaking of toy boys.
[01:13:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:13:31] Speaker A: Birthday party.
[01:13:32] Speaker B: Twitch's son is a toy boy.
[01:13:33] Speaker A: Yes. He likes that soccer ball.
[01:13:35] Speaker B: Yeah. Twitch is talking to his brother in law, Dennis, and Dennis is trying to, you know, he's like, man, heard about the. That's happening to you. That sucks. Dennis seems kind of cool. And Twitch is like, yeah. I mean, the toll it's taken on Helen. And Dennis is like, Helen's a tough cookie. She'll. She'll survive. Make sure you're taking care of yourself, though. Twitch is like, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool. Then Helen's like, Max. She calls him Max. She calls him by his government name.
[01:14:04] Speaker A: By his first name.
[01:14:05] Speaker B: Go get the cake and the. Go get the cake and the knife. And so. Which is walking into the. Walking into the kitchen saying, my. My catchphrase. That has been my catchphrase for, like 20 years now. I'm so, so tired.
[01:14:18] Speaker A: That is your catchphrase, man.
[01:14:21] Speaker B: I know. Every time I talk to my mom, she's like, how are you doing? And I'm like, I'm. I'm tired. And she's like, you always say that. It's like, it's always true.
[01:14:28] Speaker A: Yeah. Don't be saying, I'm so tired. Your mother, David, not. Don't say the fuck.
[01:14:33] Speaker B: I try to. I try to. I try to not curse to my mother as much as possible.
[01:14:37] Speaker A: Yeah, it happens.
[01:14:38] Speaker B: I mean, sometimes it's nice to drop.
[01:14:41] Speaker A: In one now that you're an adult and just drop in a. Or something and be like, what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do?
[01:14:45] Speaker B: What are you gonna do about it, Mom? Huh? You gonna wash my mouth out with soap load? I could have did last time. Huh?
[01:14:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:14:52] Speaker B: Yeah. So Twitch is just like digging through the cabinets, and then Sam. Sam comes up to the door and is like, hey, hey, Twitch. Hey, hey, let me in. And Sam. Sam's got a copy of the investigation report into the. Into Twitch's case. Twitch is like, how did you get this? And Sam's like, oh, you don't want to know.
[01:15:11] Speaker A: This is completely unrealistic. There's no way that Sam is in this proximity to this many donuts. All these donuts and doesn't eat one.
[01:15:17] Speaker B: Yeah, I was gonna. I was gonna bring that up later, but yeah. Yeah, definitely. There's two dozen donuts here. No more than two dozen donuts. There's like 32 donuts here.
[01:15:27] Speaker A: Yeah. And there's only, like. I don't Know, it looks like there are like eight people at this party. Yeah, it's a lot of donuts.
[01:15:33] Speaker B: No, three dozen donuts. Jesus, there's so many fucking donuts. Like, every time. The. Every time they show a different section of the kitchen, there's more donut.
[01:15:41] Speaker A: There's donuts everywhere.
[01:15:44] Speaker B: But, yeah, Sam's like, I was just. I was seeing how you were holding up. And Twitch is like, I missed my shot. And they're like, but you never miss. Like, I know that's bothering me. And Sam's. Sam's doing really, really good at trying to be supportive.
I'm sure it's. It doesn't come naturally to him. So. So as sort of ham fisted as it might be, he's. He's doing. He's doing pretty good. And then. And then Helen comes into the kitchen and then loses her when she sees Sam, like, what the are you doing here?
[01:16:16] Speaker A: Another great characterization of Helen here.
She's just like a harpy. It's kind of weird.
[01:16:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Hey, Helen, how you doing? Go yourself. That's how I'm doing. What? Wait, what? And so. So now this whole situation is Sam's fault because, you know, Chase, he can't keep up, and Helen kicks him out. And. And Sam's trying to. Trying to apologize. And Twitch is like, just go.
[01:16:41] Speaker A: Just get out of here.
[01:16:42] Speaker B: And we see. We see just how casual Twitch is. I mean, he's in sneakers and everything. It's real weird seeing Twitch and casual.
[01:16:51] Speaker A: Yeah, it is. It is strange.
[01:16:53] Speaker B: It's. It's like he's trying to be an undercover cop. But you. You. You mark him because the clothes are wearing him instead of him wearing the clothes. Yeah, And I was gonna say, it would be funny if the difference between these, like, because we get a beat of Sam just standing there and then he leaves. I was gonna say it would be funny if in this panel there was just a donut missing.
[01:17:16] Speaker A: He took a donut.
[01:17:17] Speaker B: I don't know why he didn't.
[01:17:19] Speaker A: Yeah, I know. And you'd be chomping on it.
[01:17:21] Speaker B: Yeah. Probably because it doesn't have sprinkles. And we know from the. We know from the toy that he likes the one with sprinkles.
[01:17:26] Speaker A: He does.
[01:17:28] Speaker B: And it's just a random child. I'm gonna assume this is one of Twitch's children sitting under a tree out front saying stuff to Sam. Saying, doesn't feel good, does it, Mr. Taking your best shot and yet still missing. Sam's like, what?
I was just hoping you have a wonderful day so, yeah, I don't know.
[01:17:46] Speaker A: What'S up with this chick. This is weird.
[01:17:48] Speaker B: I don't know. The whole interaction. I don't know if it's important or if it's just the Todd father Flight of fancy. I'm going to assume it's important in some way, shape or form.
[01:17:57] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what I was assuming too because like shows are all shadowy and. Thank you. Have a wonderful day.
[01:18:03] Speaker B: Yeah. Then Sam gets into his car and immediately gets the text message from the coroner who says, hey, I found some fuckery. I need you here now. And then some time passes and the party is over. And Helen and Twitch are cleaning up. And Twitch's son comes in. I guess we should probably call him by his name. I think it says here earlier, doesn't it?
His name is Bobby. His name is Bobby.
He does look like Bart Simpson.
And Bobby. Bobby, the Toy boy he is is saying that not only did his dad get him an invisible action figure. I'm going to assume invisible as they play on Invincible, but it's like his favorite character in everything. And he doesn't like it. He loves it. And Twitch is like. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good, good, good. Go thank your mother. She's the one who put everything together.
[01:18:55] Speaker A: See, I was thinking it was like invisible action figure like the ones they would make. They're like clear plastic. Like the hologram emperor.
[01:19:01] Speaker B: Yeah, well, but it's in. It's in. It's an all caps. So that means it's got to be a property.
[01:19:06] Speaker A: Yeah, it is. It is a plastic.
[01:19:08] Speaker B: But I don't know why they didn't just say Invincible since Invincible is also a image production.
[01:19:15] Speaker A: I don't know. Maybe the.
[01:19:16] Speaker B: But I guess maybe Robert Kirkman didn't say he could do it. Yeah, I guess that's part of being a creator owned then. And then we got Twitch and Helen going to bed. And Twitch makes the most untwitch simile or metaphor for Helen vis a vis her party throwing skills. He calls her the Van Wilder of Astoria.
[01:19:42] Speaker A: Throwing a great party. Plus it's like you think of Van Wilder. You don't think I'm throwing kids parties?
[01:19:47] Speaker B: No, you think of raunchy sex fists.
[01:19:50] Speaker A: You should. You should call it like the Chuck E. Cheese of Astoria.
[01:19:53] Speaker B: Yeah, The Charles Entertainment. Cheese.
[01:19:56] Speaker A: Charles Entertainment. Cheese.
[01:19:58] Speaker B: And then Helen, Helen and Twitch are having. You know, she's like, sorry, sorry, Sam just pisses me the fuck off. He's like, you know, it's. It's fine. I understand. It's work. This is home. It's just like, let's just get some sleep. And then the classic Johnny. The classic, oh, I forgot to grab the shit that I knew I needed to grab and didn't bring it with me. Could you go grab it for me? To. To his. To his credit, Twitch is doing this without the insane amounts of sighing that tends to happen when that question is asked, voluntary or not.
And so Twitch goes out to the kitchen to get this charger that she left. And he's looking out the window and he says, he's a guy, Johnny. He says, hey, that's that motherfucker who's. I am me. Look at him.
[01:20:43] Speaker A: He's just standing on his back porch.
[01:20:45] Speaker B: Yeah, he's just standing there just staring.
[01:20:48] Speaker A: What the.
[01:20:49] Speaker B: What? I don't know. That's no good. And then we cut from there to Sam enters the yacht, the. The morgue. And the doc is just taking his gloves off because he's finished. And Sam's like, damn, that was quick. Doc's like, what can I tell you? I'm good at what I do.
[01:21:08] Speaker A: And basically what he lets him know is that the gunshot didn't kill him. That he had died of a heart attack.
[01:21:14] Speaker B: Yeah. And not only as like, not at the same time, like two days prior. And he's like, yeah. He's like, I know you and you and twits like that weird shit from time to time. And this is some weird shit.
[01:21:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:21:27] Speaker B: And then we get a little skull or blood splattered in the issue.
[01:21:31] Speaker A: You're telling me this guy was dead before Twitch shot him?
[01:21:35] Speaker B: You could just. You could just see Sam being like, ah, it's one of these again.
[01:21:39] Speaker A: Yeah, it's another. It's called Spawn to help us.
Maybe this story will have some supernatural elements to it.
[01:21:47] Speaker B: I mean, maybe.
[01:21:48] Speaker A: I would guess that it's not going to.
[01:21:50] Speaker B: Yeah, probably not. It's a misdirection based on the three issues of what we've gotten so far.
[01:21:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:21:57] Speaker B: Doesn't seem to be very hoodoo. No hoodoo. And we got a hoodoo do. Hoodoo is. You do.
[01:22:05] Speaker A: No, you should say you do.
[01:22:06] Speaker B: Oh, no. But yeah.
[01:22:08] Speaker A: You remind me of the babe.
You remind me of the Dave.
[01:22:12] Speaker B: What Dave?
[01:22:13] Speaker A: The Dave with the power.
[01:22:15] Speaker B: What power?
[01:22:17] Speaker A: The power of reading Spawn. Yeah, and flip the page. You got an ad for the Spawn statue. That's like $400.
[01:22:25] Speaker B: Yeah, the pre order. But that's. That's based off of issue number one cover. It's such a dope statue. But there's no way I could justify bringing that into My home, Johnny. No, especially because with. With my klutzy hands, I would probably accidentally drop it within five minutes of bringing it in and then be like, fucking.
[01:22:48] Speaker A: Yeah. But million pieces to the people who got one. Congratulations.
[01:22:53] Speaker B: Yeah, send us pictures of it at. Regarding SpawnPod. Gmail.com.
[01:22:57] Speaker A: Send a pictures of it with your cat.
[01:22:59] Speaker B: Yeah, hopefully not the picture of it with the cat. And then seconds later, a picture of the cat and it on the floor.
[01:23:06] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. He just knocks it off.
[01:23:10] Speaker B: The UFC is the toy ads.
[01:23:13] Speaker A: Yeah, UFC action figures, all these stand up dudes.
[01:23:17] Speaker B: I'm. I'm confused about how these are put together. Are these static figures or do they have like limited articulation in there?
[01:23:24] Speaker A: No, they're static figures.
[01:23:27] Speaker B: They like aren't even trying to hide the seams in these at all. Like they phoned it in like this guy in the lower right. Like.
[01:23:34] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, maybe they do have some kind of articulation. I don't know. But yeah, you're right.
[01:23:39] Speaker B: Oh, I mean, honestly, if I had to do anything for ufc, I would. I would phone it in because I don't give a.
[01:23:45] Speaker A: So, Yep, much prefer professional wrestling because it's not actual violence, but Generation New Story. I just love Joe Rogan, so that's why I love USC so much.
[01:23:58] Speaker B: You model yourself after him.
[01:24:00] Speaker A: You know it.
[01:24:01] Speaker B: I think. I think the one thing you two have in common is smoking weed and having a podcast.
[01:24:07] Speaker A: That's about it. I used to host Fear Factor.
[01:24:10] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, you did? Yeah, I forgot about that.
[01:24:13] Speaker A: Yeah. When I was a little kid.
Yeah. We got the Coming soon to a comic shop near you. We get the spin offs, but we have one that is an inaccurate.
[01:24:22] Speaker B: Yeah, so no Home Here didn't come out. No Home Here was canceled and has been resolicited as the Curse of Shirley Johnson.
I don't know if I like the name. The Curse of Shirley Johnson. No Home Here is pretty good.
It's. It's less information given to you, like, what the fuck is this supposed to be? No Home Here. Whereas Curse of Shirley Johnson. There's Shirley Johnson and there's a curse. So it's more on the 10, but.
[01:24:50] Speaker A: I like that no Harm Here is a little more evocative.
[01:24:53] Speaker B: I wonder, I wonder if it's because maybe they. They've changed what they were doing and instead of it being like they wanted to make it more of, here's this new character, Shirley Johnson. Yeah, not really a new character, but I think maybe if they're trying to make Shirley Johnson an ongoing concern, that makes Branding sense. But no Home Here is a way better title.
Let us know your thoughts on the change from no Home Here to the Curse of Shirley Johnson at regarding SPUN podmail.com. please do image classic stats on the back. And then that is the end of the issue, Johnny.
[01:25:33] Speaker A: That's the end of the issue.
A new case began.
[01:25:37] Speaker B: Oh yeah, it did. It parted one.
[01:25:41] Speaker A: Parted one.
[01:25:44] Speaker B: Speaking of parted one.
So Johnny, one of our hospice dogs here at the house. So first off, he's got one eye that has a giant cataract so he can't see. He's deaf.
He has, he's heading toward heart failure and just earlier this week got vestibular, vestibular dysregulation, which means he's dizzy. Like he doesn't know which way is up and which way is down.
[01:26:14] Speaker A: That's sort of my life.
[01:26:16] Speaker B: So. So I can't think of anything more frightening than like not being able to interact with the world and then feeling like you're falling all of the time. So Leo, Leo is a very good boy. He's a trooper for putting up with this. So I'm going to rate him 18 million out of five.
[01:26:32] Speaker A: Nice.
[01:26:33] Speaker B: Which all that to say, Johnny. It's time to rate the puppies.
[01:26:37] Speaker A: It's time to rate the puppies.
First up today we had Dead Details, the Gunslinger Number two.
Continuing our adventures of Tobias, whose name we now know.
[01:26:49] Speaker B: Yeah, he's going to live for 150 years and start a operatic metal band.
[01:26:55] Speaker A: I hope so.
[01:26:56] Speaker B: It's built in. He's got the costumes, he's got the dramatic.
[01:27:00] Speaker A: Yeah, but yeah, I mean it's going to come as no surprise to everyone that I love this issue. I love this Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger.
Really, really, really enjoy Jimmy Palmiotti's script.
It's just a clean, well told tale.
It has a lot of intrigue.
He's doling out the information in the right amount of ways. I like the Amy flashback where she's like a demon.
[01:27:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:27:26] Speaker A: And of course the Patrick Reynolds art is just superb.
It really evokes the old West. And this is what I wanted out of Gunslinger originally. Like this is kind of what I was looking forward to and we didn't really get that because he's pulled through time and getting this story set in the old west is just pretty exciting.
[01:27:43] Speaker B: Yes, indeed.
[01:27:44] Speaker A: But I, it's just as a fun story, introduced him to these, this bordello group that I'm excited to see what's up with them and how he survives. This reminds me west of sundown, which is always a good thing. Check it out if you looking for a good short read. I think it was only like, 12 issues.
[01:28:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Something like that.
[01:28:03] Speaker A: Or 10, I think.
[01:28:05] Speaker B: I think it. I think it lasted about a year.
[01:28:07] Speaker A: So I did two arcs. Yeah. And the arcs were, like, five or six issues.
[01:28:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
Real good.
[01:28:13] Speaker A: I think there's trade paperbacks, but anyway, yeah, I'm going to give this issue four, get over here. Because of the Mortal Kombat toy ad in the back.
[01:28:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Hell, yeah.
I fully agree.
We talk about it a lot. And, like, we always. We always love sports Spawn. We love the Todd father when he writes Spawn. But there's just something about somebody who's known for just being a great writer, like, full stop coming on to do a Spawn tale that's just like, oh, holy. Like, it's. It's realizing the full potential of the awesomeness of the characters really reinvigorates it. Yeah, it's. It's real good. And yeah, this. This Patrick Reynolds art is, like, so effortless, effortlessly detailed, but also, like, you can see anytime that he gets a chance to be kind of, like, nebulous or fuzzy around the edges, he takes it. But it doesn't take away from the clarity at all. It's so good. It's just. It's a great package. It's a great package.
[01:29:16] Speaker A: All for only $2.99.
[01:29:18] Speaker B: All for only 2.99. I'm gonna. I'm gonna give it four and a half. Skulls melting out of a face from.
[01:29:26] Speaker A: I've never had a vision that ended with a skull or a face melting. I feel like that's a common thing, and it's a trope.
[01:29:31] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:29:32] Speaker A: Like someone's talking to you. They're like, you must do this, and they turn into a skeleton. Never happened to me. One time, I had it. Actually, it kind of did. One time, I had a dream about a ghost that turned into a skeleton, and it woke me up.
[01:29:41] Speaker B: Oh, geez.
[01:29:43] Speaker A: One time I had a dream about a ghost, and that's been our episode. No, I'm kidding.
[01:29:49] Speaker B: So, yeah. Yeah, it's good. It's good shit, Johnny. It's good shit.
[01:29:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Second up, we had a part one. For the second issue, we had a part one, which is actually a part nine. Yeah. Because we sandwich case files number nine, and it's the start of the new arc. New case. I like where it's going. I guess correctly. They probably switch it back to the urban setting after the country one, which is not a wild guess. Or anything. But it is interesting that Twitch now lives in the suburbs.
[01:30:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:30:17] Speaker A: Alex's townhouse.
[01:30:20] Speaker B: Maybe they needed. Maybe they decided they needed more room for donuts on the counter.
[01:30:24] Speaker A: They needed more room for donuts. I mean, if I had a house and not an apartment, I would just fill it with donuts.
[01:30:29] Speaker B: Let me tell you, Johnny, there's still not enough room for donuts even when you have a house. We need to. We need to pitch in to buy a bigger communal house.
[01:30:37] Speaker A: I like donuts. I'm like, nutty for donuts. They're pretty good. You know, honestly, one of my favorite donuts is a hot Krispy Kreme cream. They're really good.
[01:30:45] Speaker B: Yeah. When you go to just get the regular glazed and like you're watching it go on the conveyor belt, then it's like it comes directly to your hands.
[01:30:52] Speaker A: It's exactly what I mean.
[01:30:53] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like. It's like a. It's like an episode of how stuff's made, only with a snack at the end of it.
[01:31:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:31:02] Speaker B: Man, I love that show. It's so good. I've never seen was on the Discovery Channel, and it's just basically like a film crew would go into random factories and just like, film the production line.
[01:31:15] Speaker A: The only thing I watch on Discovery Channel, David, is Snaps. The one about women killing their husbands.
[01:31:20] Speaker B: Oh, geez. Oh, wonderful.
[01:31:22] Speaker A: I'm kidding. I don't watch that. I just know it exists.
[01:31:25] Speaker B: Speaking of donuts and snaps, Johnny, you were. You were rating this thing, weren't you?
[01:31:30] Speaker A: I already did.
[01:31:31] Speaker B: You did? No. You didn't give it a rating?
[01:31:34] Speaker A: Oh, I didn't?
[01:31:35] Speaker B: No. You. You said. You said. You said that you, like, it's now in an urban setting and then.
[01:31:40] Speaker A: I'm sorry, I got distracted with it. I'm thinking about donuts. Maybe I do love donuts. Maybe I'm nutty for donuts dough.
[01:31:47] Speaker B: Nutty, I think they would call that.
[01:31:49] Speaker A: Right? Yeah. Urban setting.
The art I like, I don't know. Sometimes it's. Thomas Nashly has such an over the top style. Not over the top, but, like, just so dynamic that, like, sometimes there's some humor in, like, how they're moving because they seem like they're moving so much. But that's not a bad thing. Yeah, it's just. It's very dynamic, I guess is the word I'm looking for action. Everything seems action or everyone's surprised or like, I don't know. His facial expressions are good.
[01:32:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:32:16] Speaker A: I like where the story's headed. It's Good. So far. I'm a little weirded out by the way Helen's been portrayed the last this whole time. She's just, like, a jerk.
[01:32:27] Speaker B: It's not great.
[01:32:28] Speaker A: It's not great.
If I was Tom McFarlane's wife, I'd be like, what the fuck?
Why are you portraying me like this?
[01:32:36] Speaker B: Yeah, for real.
[01:32:36] Speaker A: But I'm going to give it. I'm going to give it three donuts. What else can you give it?
[01:32:43] Speaker B: I don't think. I don't think there's anything else you can give it, Johnny. So it's a part one. It starts. We got the mystery on our hands. Thomas Natchlick's art is great. There's some weird stuff that I'm sure is the Todd father doing his thing. So I don't know. But this is. This is the stuff the Thomas, the Todd father is best at. So, yeah, I will trust him to guide us through the mystery.
Some of the jokes hit. Some of them don't.
[01:33:12] Speaker A: It's true. The chocolate gun is a really weird one.
[01:33:15] Speaker B: What the. What the.
Okay, whatever. I do like this panel of Twitch. He seems so sad. He's like, sorry, Al, I promised my wife I'd go home early. I know.
[01:33:27] Speaker A: He's like, I can't go fight. Hell with you, Al.
[01:33:30] Speaker B: Like, I bet if you could see his foot, he would be like, kicking a rock.
Also concerned about the characterization of Helen throughout this entire series so far.
[01:33:42] Speaker A: Maybe we'll get better.
[01:33:44] Speaker B: Maybe we'll see. So I'm gonna give it three trays of donuts, since there are three trays of donuts. Donuts.
[01:33:51] Speaker A: Hey, we both gave it a donut.
[01:33:54] Speaker B: Go nuts. It's not too bad. It's not too bad.
[01:33:58] Speaker A: Good start. I mean, I'll see where it goes. Like. Like I said it was. It's good.
[01:34:01] Speaker B: It's. It's much like the first arc was the Twitch show. This one's seeming to be the Sam show, and it's the newest issue, came out this week, and it's. Oh, boy. It's all Sam all the time. It's pretty great.
[01:34:18] Speaker A: I haven't caught that one yet.
[01:34:20] Speaker B: It's good. It's good.
[01:34:22] Speaker A: Cool.
[01:34:22] Speaker B: All right, well, that's. These. Rated. Johnny.
What? Since we rated these books, would you like to maybe rate some other books sometime pretty soon in the future? Like, say, next week?
[01:34:34] Speaker A: Yeah, let's do it.
[01:34:36] Speaker B: All right. Awesome. Well, which ones do you want to rate? I guess we got to read them first.
[01:34:41] Speaker A: I don't know. Which ones do I want to read?
[01:34:43] Speaker B: I don't know. You wanna. You wanna do maybe a. Maybe a main title? Maybe that first. The Glorious Return of the. The Toddfather. On to main title. Spawn. And spawn 360.
[01:34:53] Speaker A: Let's do it.
[01:34:54] Speaker B: All right. Nice, nice. And what about. What about. What about Non. Tobias Gunslinger? Maybe about some. Some Javier.
[01:35:01] Speaker A: Some modern gunslinger. Sure, I'll take that.
[01:35:04] Speaker B: Well, then we can do gunslinger 39. So that would be spawn 360. Gunslinger 39.
[01:35:09] Speaker A: Swans doing a. 360.
[01:35:11] Speaker B: Yeah, it's gonna be another. It's gonna be another Todd Father episode. Double Todd Father.
[01:35:15] Speaker A: Damn, he's riding a lot, man.
[01:35:17] Speaker B: He's all over the place. He's. He's got way more energy than I do. I don't. I get tired just like, seeing him do stuff and it's like, Jesus, Yeah, man, I'm jealous, Johnny. That's what it is. Jealous of his. Of his ability to be awakened without being a substance person. Does he even drink coffee, Man? I need coffee to even.
[01:35:40] Speaker A: I don't know. I know he's straight edge. Maybe not wild, maybe just. He just rails Adderall, crushes up and snorts it.
[01:35:49] Speaker B: Oh, you know what. You know what else is. You know what else is good for crushing up and snorting, Johnny?
The love of the Spawn community.
[01:35:58] Speaker A: The love. You gotta crush it up and snort it, baby.
[01:36:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. Get that. Get that drug right. Right into your heart. Because, I mean, it's a good community. It's. It's great. I love it. I love it a lot. And we got a. We got a somebody that you should crush up and snort this week who's doing some. Doing some Spawn artwork over on the Instagram. And they are djs_lopez. That's djs_lopez.
And they don't have very much up there yet, so, you know, you're getting in on the ground floor of somebody who's doing some pretty fun art. But their very first entry is something that they did for Spontober. Spanuary Span. And it's a. It's a great Al Simmons. And it's just like. It's got the green. The green smoke coming up.
[01:36:50] Speaker A: Is that January a year ago? Is that when Spanuary was?
[01:36:53] Speaker B: Yeah, that was January a year ago.
[01:36:54] Speaker A: Wow.
[01:36:56] Speaker B: He also has an amazing.
The mask. Oh, man, the mask's crazy. And a super awesome Swamp Thing.
[01:37:04] Speaker A: I love Swamp Thing.
[01:37:05] Speaker B: The way. The way to my heart is through my Swamp Thing.
Wait, what?
[01:37:13] Speaker A: Most men it is, David. Most men it is.
[01:37:18] Speaker B: So, yeah. DJs Lopez spell spread the love with them. Because, you know, what is Spawn if not love? I'll tell you what it is. It's good.
[01:37:26] Speaker A: Spawn is love. And Spawn is good.
While you're over there following DJ Lopez, make sure to give us a follow. We are regarding SpawnPod on Instagram. And also reach out to us at. Regarding spawnpodmail.com.
[01:37:38] Speaker B: Yes, indeed.
[01:37:39] Speaker A: Every week, I like to ask the question to kind of spur the thoughts. And this week, I want to know, who's your favorite Mortal Kombat character play as.
[01:37:48] Speaker B: Who's your favorite.
[01:37:49] Speaker A: Who's you? Who was it? Was it Raiden? Was it Johnny Cage? Was it Sonya Blade?
[01:37:55] Speaker B: Was it that? Was it that dude with the forearms?
[01:37:58] Speaker A: Goro, Goro, Goro. You had to unlock, I think.
[01:38:02] Speaker B: Was it. Was it the trusty guy that came.
I fucking love that guy.
I love how dark and gory everything is. But it was just made by a whole bunch of nerds who were like, you know, it would be hilarious. Let's do some dumb.
[01:38:19] Speaker A: Like the friendships and the babalities.
[01:38:21] Speaker B: Oh, man.
[01:38:23] Speaker A: Friendship. What friendship? You do a friendship fatality.
[01:38:26] Speaker B: Oh, man. It's wild, Dusty.
[01:38:31] Speaker A: So, yeah, hit us up. Hit us up about anything. Hit us up about the show. Hit us up about what you've been doing with Spawn.
[01:38:36] Speaker B: Absolutely.
[01:38:37] Speaker A: Reach out to us on Instagram. Or you can email us you want a little more long form. And if you do send us an email, we will read it on the show.
[01:38:44] Speaker B: Unless you say not to.
[01:38:45] Speaker A: Unless you say not to. And if you put in your address, we'll send you some stickers.
[01:38:50] Speaker B: Hell, yeah, we will.
Hell, yeah, we will. Also. Hell, yeah. Our music is done by Lonnie Bones.
[01:38:58] Speaker A: Thank you, Lonnie.
[01:38:59] Speaker B: Yeah, that's Lonnie with a Y, not an ie.
[01:39:01] Speaker A: See, I only like things with skeletons. He's Lonnie Bones, so that's why I like his music.
[01:39:04] Speaker B: Oh, more skeleton shit, Johnny. Hell, yeah. We got a theme going. We're going to have to retool our logo to be all skeletons.
[01:39:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:39:12] Speaker B: I mean, maybe we could get you, like. You like army of Darkness, which has a whole skeleton army.
[01:39:20] Speaker A: It's true. I mean, I love skeletons. What's. What's not to love?
[01:39:24] Speaker B: Skeletons are great. Skeletons. Well, I mean, on that. On that note, Johnny, I think. I think I've run out of skeletons to talk about, so may the scorched be with you.
[01:39:37] Speaker A: And also with you, David.
[01:39:39] Speaker B: Skeletons.
[01:39:41] Speaker A: Skeletons are cool.
[01:39:42] Speaker B: Rattling bones. I like. I like when a skeleton plays the xylophone on the ribs. It's always fun.
[01:39:49] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, who's my favorite skeleton? Who's your favorite skeleton? Yeah.
[01:39:53] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
Well, Jack Skellington.
[01:39:56] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, he's the. Jack's the man, dude.
[01:39:59] Speaker B: That's. That's the easy grab. He's real smart, you know? Real curious. Humble enough to know when he's up.
Willing to learn.
[01:40:10] Speaker A: Enthusiastic.
[01:40:11] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. Like, wants to. Wants to make sure his friends are okay.
[01:40:17] Speaker A: Voiced by Danny Elfman.
[01:40:19] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. True. Well, singing voice, anyway. Singing voice, yeah.
The talking voice was somebody else.
Mister. Mr. Bones is also a good one. The little. The little skeleton diorama you could have on your shelf. That was in the Scholastic.
[01:40:37] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[01:40:37] Speaker B: I love that Scholastic book. It took me three years to convince my mom to finally order that freaking guy because I wouldn't shut up about it.
Yeah, it was. It was like. It was like a 3D puzzle where you snapped them together and he had, like, a. A plastic dome over him.
[01:40:54] Speaker A: Yeah, I remember that.
[01:40:55] Speaker B: It's great. It's great.
[01:40:58] Speaker A: Yeah. Love, Skeletons. Bones, Skellingtons.
[01:41:08] Speaker B: I watch your skull.
[01:41:11] Speaker A: Oh, yeah in life Life's journey Journey There is no bond greater than the bond between brothers and sister and the world will never be lonely with family by your side that's impossible.
That's fucking impossible. We're not doing that.
That sounds so awful. I can't wait to listen to that. That's.
