[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome to prime time. [00:00:32] Speaker B: Good evening, and welcome to the Malibols. This is regarding Spawn, the world's spookiest spawn podcast. Because this is a tradition. A second year. So this is now tradition. This is our Halloween special. [00:00:47] Speaker A: Yeah. Where we get spooky. We get [00:00:50] Speaker B: spooky. We're only a few days away. [00:00:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Quick turnaround on this. [00:00:54] Speaker B: Yeah. David, you get the editing. Are you editing while we're recording? [00:00:58] Speaker A: Yes, yes. It's. It's like an in camera edit, only an in record edit. [00:01:03] Speaker B: Yeah. Till midnight on Saturday, or else you turn into a toad. [00:01:07] Speaker A: Well, I'll turn into a pumpkin at 10 o' clock on Saturday, so it's. [00:01:10] Speaker B: But you get an extra hour of sleep so you can Change it to 11 o'. Clock. [00:01:13] Speaker A: Oh, I guess that's true. True. [00:01:18] Speaker B: What is up? What is. Last year we did Sleepy Hollow. We had a guest. Yes, [00:01:22] Speaker A: we did, [00:01:23] Speaker B: Eloy. [00:01:24] Speaker A: You. [00:01:26] Speaker B: Because it's tradition. This is our second year. We have a guest again. Can you guess who it is? David? [00:01:34] Speaker A: I could never in a million years guess who we got to do the second annual regarding Spawn Halloween episode. [00:01:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:42] Speaker A: Even though I'm looking right at him. [00:01:45] Speaker B: Bitch, [00:01:46] Speaker A: I'm back. Oh, we got Freddy Krueger. Shit. [00:01:49] Speaker B: Oh, no, no. It is Eloy Martinez, our friend and fellow cinephile. Not a Spawn fan, but that's okay. We always forgive him. That's why we get him to do these episodes. [00:02:03] Speaker A: Yeah. This is. This is how we get him to watch the trash we like to watch. [00:02:08] Speaker C: And technically not a Nightmare on Elm street fan, because this is the first one I've [00:02:15] Speaker B: ever [00:02:15] Speaker C: seen. [00:02:17] Speaker B: We're getting ahead of ourselves a bit because what are we doing last year just to be Hollow. [00:02:21] Speaker A: Mm. [00:02:22] Speaker B: And I kind of, like, left this one up to Dave's Got It. Sink and Sleepy Hollows kind of felt like a me choice. So we're gonna do one. One for David, one for me. [00:02:29] Speaker A: Yeah. And there's. There's a couple. There's a couple of horror movies that both of us always quote. I didn't want to do one expressly for me, because the ones I [00:02:38] Speaker B: wanted. I thought I was gonna do Hellraiser. That's [00:02:39] Speaker A: what [00:02:40] Speaker B: I suggested. Yeah. [00:02:40] Speaker A: Yeah. I was thinking about doing Hellraiser, but objectively, Hellraiser is not a fun movie. [00:02:47] Speaker B: It's really not. [00:02:48] Speaker A: So. So that's. That kind of was the deciding factor. And. But one of the series that we talk about all the time is Nightmare on Elm street. Because as [00:02:58] Speaker B: he's a 90s nasty boy. [00:02:59] Speaker A: Yeah. And as we know, there are no bad Freddy movies. So [00:03:03] Speaker B: as quoted in Evil Dead Rise. [00:03:05] Speaker A: Yes, indeed. So we're watching. We're watching that. We watched Nightmare on Elm street, three Dream Warriors. [00:03:11] Speaker B: Wow. [00:03:11] Speaker A: Which is, as Johnny has said multiple times in our text thread, arguably the best. [00:03:17] Speaker B: It's in the discussion, [00:03:18] Speaker A: either the first or the third being best. [00:03:20] Speaker B: And some people like New Nightmare a lot, but it's okay. [00:03:24] Speaker A: I like [00:03:25] Speaker B: it. [00:03:25] Speaker A: I liked New Nightmare because I, I watched it before I had meta narrative fatigue, so [00:03:33] Speaker B: it was an early one. [00:03:34] Speaker A: I liked. I liked it. But [00:03:37] Speaker C: yeah. Is that, that's the one where they're making. [00:03:43] Speaker A: Yeah. And [00:03:45] Speaker C: so it's. [00:03:47] Speaker A: Yeah, like, well, before Scream. [00:03:49] Speaker C: Well, yeah, but it's the same plot. [00:03:51] Speaker B: Right, But Freddy's real. He's actually. No, a demon. Like a folk demon. Latched on to our public conscious of it and became Freddy [00:04:00] Speaker A: brought him in all this. [00:04:02] Speaker B: Craven plays himself in a scene. [00:04:04] Speaker A: Yeah. And the, the, in that scene where Wes Craven plays himself in his office. That black leather and chrome tube couch. They had one of those at the building I worked at in college. And I was like, ah. I mean, obviously that couch is everywhere, but [00:04:21] Speaker B: this is just to say this film was from 1987. [00:04:24] Speaker A: Yes. [00:04:25] Speaker B: Not available on Hulu Disney Plus. I told Eloy it was. I tried to watch it and I couldn't find it. [00:04:30] Speaker A: It was on. It's on hbo. [00:04:31] Speaker C: It's hbo. [00:04:33] Speaker A: And I just learned that you can get a new bundle with Hulu Disney plus and HBO instead of espn. So. So, so guess who has HBO N Max again. Johnny. [00:04:43] Speaker B: Okay, cool. You can watch. Oh yeah, you did. You watched Evil Dead Burn. You didn't like it? [00:04:46] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Oh, well, that's not the movie we watched. [00:04:51] Speaker C: Did he watch Lantern? I've [00:04:52] Speaker A: seen the first two episodes and I, I, I dig it. Cuz. Cuz I like a lantern story. [00:04:57] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:04:58] Speaker A: Although John not John. [00:05:03] Speaker B: John [00:05:04] Speaker A: not John. Yes. John [00:05:05] Speaker B: what? [00:05:06] Speaker A: John Stewart. Yeah, John. John Stewart is awfully. He's a stick in the mud. But that's Jon Stewart supposed to be a stick in the mud. It's just like, loosen up, dude. Yeah, well, I guess he did that dude's wife. So, spoilers for episode one of Lanterns. [00:05:26] Speaker C: Yeah, who would have guessed the, like, Special Forces Marine would be a stick in the mud who follows the rules on [00:05:33] Speaker A: everything? You know, I know this is gonna not mean anything to you guys, but he would be a great quantum for Quantum and Woody. [00:05:42] Speaker B: Quantum Woody. What the hell is that? [00:05:43] Speaker A: Quantum and wood. [00:05:45] Speaker C: Oh, I [00:05:46] Speaker A: remember that. It's a comic book from the 90s about it's. [00:05:49] Speaker C: A comic [00:05:50] Speaker A: book. Yeah. A black kid and a white kid get adopted by a scientist's father and he has a nuclear accident and like evaporates himself. And he created like these quantum power entanglement ban. And the brothers, when they're going through their dad's stuff, each put one of the bands on. So that way if they don't cling their. Their wrists together every 24 hours, they will also dissipate into their atomic structures. So they. They hate each other, but they have to live with each other so that way they don't die. It's great. [00:06:28] Speaker C: I remember reading that in the 90s. Like [00:06:31] Speaker A: it's still really [00:06:32] Speaker C: good. [00:06:33] Speaker B: I've never heard of that. Well, I think you actually mentioned that on the show before, David. [00:06:37] Speaker A: I'm sure I have because it's one of my favorite comic books ever. [00:06:41] Speaker B: Wow. [00:06:42] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:06:43] Speaker B: but comics were cultural behemoth in the 90s. So was Freddy Krueger. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Yes, he was [00:06:49] Speaker B: mid-90s at least. I mean, when I was growing up, like in. Around like, you know, I was born 86. So even like 90, 91, he was still ever looming social presence. [00:07:00] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. Because [00:07:02] Speaker B: this movie came out 87. [00:07:03] Speaker A: 87. [00:07:04] Speaker B: I was 1 years old. I did not see it in theaters. [00:07:08] Speaker A: Could you imagine? [00:07:10] Speaker C: Yeah, that's my. That's my knowledge of Freddy. I just know all the pop culture stuff, all the things that were in the ethos. I knew there was even [00:07:21] Speaker B: a [00:07:21] Speaker C: TV show [00:07:22] Speaker B: scared the shit out of me. And I hate. See, I didn't like to see him. [00:07:25] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:07:25] Speaker A: yeah, [00:07:27] Speaker C: I didn't. I was like a scared kid. I didn't really latch [00:07:32] Speaker B: on to horror [00:07:34] Speaker C: growing up. And I would remember seeing the commercials for Nightmare on Elm street, like to play on like the Saturday movie. And I was like, nope, not gonna watch. [00:07:46] Speaker B: I saw a Chucky 3 trailer just on TV. And I was like, that's legal. They can do that. It's like prime time. It was like coming out that weekend. I was like, so freaky freaked out. [00:07:56] Speaker A: Oh, man. Oh, speaking of Johnny, I put Child's Play two on the other the other night to. To clean. And boy, it's a good one. Do you remember, [00:08:06] Speaker B: David, we were going to go see a movie and we went into Target to get snacks, I think. And there's a little kid in like the cosmetics aisle we were cutting through and he goes. And I was standing there in my Chucky shirt. He goes, oh, no, there's something bad down there. He's like, I can't go down there. He's like, Screaming. I had a Child's Play T shirt on. [00:08:24] Speaker A: Yeah, because. Because we had. We had split up. Because you were like, I want the snacks. And I was like, I want the snacks over here. And you were like, I just scared the out of this kid. [00:08:31] Speaker B: Yeah, he was like, no, no, dad, no. Because I had, like a full Chucky shirt on. Specifically Child's Play, too, though. That's probably my favorite of them. [00:08:39] Speaker A: Nice. Is that the one where he's got the. The lopping shears on the neck of the Jack in the Box? [00:08:45] Speaker B: I mean, probably. I don't remember the posters. [00:08:51] Speaker A: All I know is that a building where he [00:08:53] Speaker B: gets melted down like a million times at the end of the tour. [00:08:55] Speaker A: Yeah, that's the second one. That's the second one. [00:08:57] Speaker B: Yes. [00:08:58] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:58] Speaker A: It's so good. [00:09:00] Speaker B: Second Freddy. Not too good. [00:09:02] Speaker C: Yeah. May shock you to hear I've never seen Child's Play either. I've never seen. Oh, I've seen, like a movie in the franchise, but I've never seen, like, Halloween, any of those movies. Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play, Hellraiser. Never really seen. I've only ever seen the original Texas. [00:09:28] Speaker A: That's one of Johnny's favorites. [00:09:29] Speaker C: And then none of the other ones. [00:09:33] Speaker A: Nice. Did you. Did you say, Johnny, that the Second Freddy movie sucks? [00:09:37] Speaker B: It doesn't suck. I said it's not that. It's not that good. If you watch, I understand. It's like a gay coming of age thing. I get it. That's great that it got made. [00:09:44] Speaker A: Oh, it's [00:09:45] Speaker B: not very good. [00:09:45] Speaker A: I was about to say it's. It's better re watching it after watching the documentary Scream Queen. [00:09:52] Speaker B: Yes, it is. [00:09:53] Speaker A: It's a great documentary, [00:09:55] Speaker B: but it's not that good. [00:09:57] Speaker A: But it's not bad. [00:10:00] Speaker B: I didn't say it was bad. It's not that good. You got offended. I understand that. It's like a. It is very homoerotic. [00:10:06] Speaker C: Well, [00:10:08] Speaker A: it's very weird. [00:10:09] Speaker C: If you want [00:10:10] Speaker B: the weird part. If you want your hearts broken. Sorry. [00:10:14] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:10:14] Speaker B: the weird part about it too is he's just at the pool party at the end, just walking around. No one's asleep. Sleep. And it's like, what all the rules. [00:10:21] Speaker A: Well, it's because. Because he uses. He uses the kid's body to come into the world. Like he, he. He takes over his body. [00:10:30] Speaker B: That's [00:10:31] Speaker A: the idea is there's this. There's this man inside of this boy. That's the joke. [00:10:38] Speaker B: Anyway, go. Continue. Sorry. [00:10:42] Speaker C: Well, both of you were telling me that this is arguably the best Nightmare on Elm Street. And, you know, this is the pinnacle of the series. This and that. And if it is, I am glad I never wasted my time on any of these movies. I had to tell you. Did not. A Freddy guy apparently [00:11:10] Speaker B: rocks. [00:11:12] Speaker C: He is. I. They're fine. I like some of the special effects. Like, the rest of the time, I was struggling to stay awake. That's [00:11:24] Speaker B: the VR experience, Eloy. It's like. It's like you're in the movie [00:11:28] Speaker C: finding it real hard to like. And then I was just. I was like, are there chunks missing out of this where people talk to each other? You're [00:11:39] Speaker B: probably asleep. [00:11:41] Speaker C: They. They never. No, [00:11:42] Speaker B: they're all just. Maybe they're all just like these archetypes, [00:11:47] Speaker C: but it's like things happen. And it's like, well, we're not going to discuss that at all. Let's go to the next thing. And I'm like, even the ending of this movie not to size, is like. And it's over. I'm like, [00:12:02] Speaker A: that's how they. Wait a minute. That's how they keep it tight. Tight. Eloy. They keep it. It's like. It's like an hour and 35 minutes. They [00:12:10] Speaker B: killed him. What do you mean, and it's over? [00:12:13] Speaker A: Or did they? [00:12:15] Speaker C: Like, what happened to, like, two of the other characters? [00:12:18] Speaker A: You mean the two of them died? They died. [00:12:22] Speaker C: Yeah. But [00:12:23] Speaker B: nobody even [00:12:23] Speaker C: acknowledges that they died. [00:12:25] Speaker B: And they kill off. What's his name in the beginning of the next one? [00:12:29] Speaker A: The. This. The psychiatrist guy? [00:12:32] Speaker B: No, the Larry [00:12:35] Speaker A: Fl. Okay. Okay. I don't even [00:12:38] Speaker B: know. Kincaid. [00:12:39] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:12:39] Speaker B: his name. Kincaid? [00:12:41] Speaker A: I think so. I don't remember the names. Johnny, you know me with names. [00:12:45] Speaker B: Okay. I think it's Kincaid. But, yeah, he's in the beginning of the next one, and it takes place at the place where the body's buried at that parking lot or that junker. [00:12:52] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:12:53] Speaker B: And he gets killed. [00:12:54] Speaker C: Yeah. Also, they never acknowledge her. [00:12:58] Speaker B: Okay. All right, let's get into it, [00:13:00] Speaker C: and then [00:13:01] Speaker B: let's. Okay. [00:13:02] Speaker C: Yeah. When we go through, I'll point out the parts that I like and the points I just found. [00:13:08] Speaker B: What [00:13:08] Speaker A: are these of these days? We'll pick a movie that Hila actually wants to watch again. You [00:13:14] Speaker B: like Sleepy Hollow? [00:13:17] Speaker C: Sleepy Hollow was fine. It's just I've never watched it aside from, like, when it came out. [00:13:23] Speaker A: Oh, man, I love Sleepy Hollow. It came out of Pluto TV the other day, and I was like, oh, look at that. [00:13:30] Speaker B: Did you watch it? [00:13:31] Speaker A: Optics. Two images that become one in the turning. [00:13:37] Speaker B: So it opens with this great quote. Because all the movies, I think, open with a quote on red. And there's a really good joke, I think, in the sixth one in Freddy's dad or the fifth one, sixth one. It does, like, some. There's always some pretentious quote. It starts with that. And then, like, rock and roll music starts playing, and it cuts to the same text, and it says, welcome to prime time, Freddy [00:13:58] Speaker A: Krueger. [00:14:00] Speaker B: What else? With the sleep. A quote from Edgar Allen Poe, which is sleep. Those little slices of death. How I loathe them. [00:14:08] Speaker A: Yeah. You can sleep in. We [00:14:09] Speaker B: get Patricia Arquette's character. She's, like, making a. She's, like, crafting. [00:14:15] Speaker A: Yeah. We open on, like, a. What's the word? It's not hodgepodge. It's not decolletage. It's [00:14:21] Speaker B: montage. [00:14:23] Speaker A: No, not mon [00:14:24] Speaker C: papier [00:14:25] Speaker A: mache. There we go. It is a montage, but it is papier mache. [00:14:28] Speaker B: Oh, okay. That she's doing. [00:14:30] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:32] Speaker C: Papier machine. [00:14:34] Speaker B: She's not [00:14:34] Speaker C: pretentious people like to call [00:14:36] Speaker A: it. [00:14:36] Speaker B: You can't stay awake. [00:14:37] Speaker A: She's. Because, I mean, at first you think maybe she's gonna be baking, and then it shows that dirty bowl with the fly. The fly on it, and it's like, what are you gonna bake with that? And then you realize she's doing arts and crafts. Arts and crafts. Very exciting. [00:14:53] Speaker C: And she's crafting the house from the [00:14:57] Speaker A: first [00:14:58] Speaker C: movie. [00:14:58] Speaker A: Right. The. The house that Nancy lived in. How confusing was it when Nancy showed up and you were like, who's this? What the is this lady? [00:15:08] Speaker C: I had recognized her face. I don't know why they gave her [00:15:12] Speaker B: streaks [00:15:12] Speaker C: in her hair. [00:15:13] Speaker A: Because she's. She's. She's rogue, and she. She steals the sleep powers from other [00:15:18] Speaker B: dude. I love that. I don't think he has an army of darkness, but I love Evil 2, where Ash gets so freaked out at the end as he gets a great gray streak. [00:15:25] Speaker C: Yeah. And then also, like, this takes place five years after the first one. And she jumped from being, like, in the middle of high school to being a PhD student. [00:15:40] Speaker A: Accelerated. Accelerated reader. [00:15:42] Speaker B: She got over the death of five of her friends real fast. [00:15:45] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:46] Speaker B: And went to college. [00:15:48] Speaker A: Wasn't that what college is for? Is forgetting about the deaths of friends [00:15:52] Speaker B: Nut up or shut up? I guess it was the 80s, you know? But Patricia Arquette. Well, I love Patricia Arquette. I love her in True Romance is great. [00:16:04] Speaker A: I haven't seen True Romance. I need to see that. [00:16:06] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:16:07] Speaker B: it's good. [00:16:08] Speaker C: Oh, got the big box. [00:16:10] Speaker B: Yeah, I do too. I got an Arrow video in the mail today. I just got the Frighteners 4K. [00:16:16] Speaker A: Nice. Ooh, hell yeah. [00:16:17] Speaker C: Oh, nice. [00:16:19] Speaker A: We could have watched that one instead. I guess that means next. Next year we need to have an Eloy's pick is what we need. [00:16:26] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh. [00:16:27] Speaker A: I do like that the Angelo Bad Elementi did the music for this. He's the Twin Peaks guy. [00:16:34] Speaker B: Okay. And so she goes to sleep. Her mom's like. She's like a party. And 80s mom is like, always come home at 1am and be like, why are [00:16:42] Speaker A: you. [00:16:43] Speaker B: Go to sleep. [00:16:45] Speaker A: Going home at 1am with strange men who want the bourbon. [00:16:48] Speaker B: That's later. [00:16:50] Speaker C: Yeah. She's got the Gentleman caller downstairs [00:16:54] Speaker B: sleeping. She's at the old house. But it's like the last. Is this. Is this Nancy's house or is this Freddy's house? [00:17:01] Speaker A: Well, I guess. I guess it's. It's. It's Nancy's house now. Freddie. Freddie moved in. [00:17:09] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Because there's little girls on bikes. [00:17:12] Speaker A: Yeah. One, two. Freddy's coming for you. [00:17:20] Speaker C: But not for like, another 40 minutes, so it'll be okay. [00:17:23] Speaker B: Well, then there's a little Tracy and she's trying to. That was one of my things. Four turns to like. [00:17:28] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. And she's just like. Yeah. I like. I like the visualization of nightmare tropes that this. This series does. It's fun. [00:17:41] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:17:43] Speaker A: We learned that, like, the. We see the. The furnace with the. The children's skeletons in it because. Because Freddy. Freddy killed. He killed children's. He killed the children's. As we, as we learn in Freddy's Revenge Nightmare on Elm Street 2, that he killed 20 children and put them in the furnace of the. The electricity factory he worked in. Electricity factory. I [00:18:09] Speaker B: thought he was a janitor. [00:18:12] Speaker A: I. I think [00:18:14] Speaker B: we had a big fight over this. Before [00:18:17] Speaker C: he lived in a boiler. [00:18:19] Speaker A: I literally just. I literally just watched Nightmare 2 this weekend, and they say that he brought the children to the boiler of the factory he worked in, and that's where he burned them. But what was the [00:18:33] Speaker B: thing you thought that I had to, like, disprove you? [00:18:35] Speaker A: That was. That was. That was that they killed him at a Christ Christmas party. [00:18:41] Speaker B: Yeah. David had like, a false memory that they killed Freddy Krueger at, like, a Christmas party. I guess they lured him. [00:18:48] Speaker A: Yeah. Which is why he's wearing a Christmas sweater. But then it's. It's because they're jarring colors that go together, which is why they chose them. [00:18:57] Speaker C: But also, the 20 kids, like, well, everybody in that town would have. With kids would have moved away. [00:19:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:19:10] Speaker C: There's no way. [00:19:11] Speaker B: Actually, that's a plot point. 20 kids is [00:19:12] Speaker C: just way too many kids. [00:19:15] Speaker B: Six tries to be, like, kind of wacky. Like, it's like the director says they were inspired by Twin Peaks at the time, and, like, they go back to Elm street, whatever town it was, and there's no kids because Freddy's been there. [00:19:29] Speaker A: I vaguely remember that. [00:19:30] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:19:31] Speaker A: But, yeah, the old man, this. If we get the classic. We get the classic waking up from a dream and being like, oh, shit, it was just a dream, only to find out that it was. It's still a dream. [00:19:44] Speaker B: Yes. [00:19:45] Speaker A: She [00:19:45] Speaker B: goes to the bathroom, and then the classic, like, faucet grows, like. [00:19:49] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:19:49] Speaker B: Fingers. It's like Jack Skellington's grabbing her. [00:19:52] Speaker A: Yeah. And the, like, the copper pipe looks like a tibia and a fibula and. Yeah. Really fucking cool. [00:19:59] Speaker C: Yeah. And when. Then she wakes up and she's cutting her wrist. [00:20:03] Speaker B: Her wrists are cut. Yes. [00:20:05] Speaker C: That's what's really going on. [00:20:06] Speaker B: And they're like, all right, you're going to. You're going to the car. You're going to the hospital. [00:20:09] Speaker A: You're going. You're going on a. You're going on a grippy sock vacation. [00:20:12] Speaker B: You'll get Larry Fishburne. [00:20:14] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh, Larry. [00:20:18] Speaker C: I was surprised when I saw his name. How [00:20:20] Speaker A: long did he go. How long did he go by Larry? [00:20:22] Speaker B: Long time [00:20:25] Speaker C: until, like, the late 90s, mid to late 90s, he switched to Lawrence Fishbowl. [00:20:31] Speaker A: Was he trying to differentiate his. Some more serious work from his earlier. Just getting a job work or. [00:20:38] Speaker B: No, he was like Larry Fisher in, like, Apocalypse Now. [00:20:41] Speaker A: Oh, really? [00:20:42] Speaker B: Yeah. He's really young in that. [00:20:44] Speaker C: Yeah, he's. I think he's like [00:20:47] Speaker A: 17 [00:20:47] Speaker C: in that movie. Yeah. Yeah. In the 90s, I think he tried to shed the. He wanted to be a more mature actor, and he was getting roles. And was it like, Boys in the Hood? Was he in that? And I think around, like, the start of the 90s, he might have switched to, like, Lawrence Fishburne. [00:21:07] Speaker B: You don't want Larry Fishburne playing Morpheus. You want Lawrence Fisherman. [00:21:09] Speaker A: Yeah, that's. That's true. That's true. [00:21:11] Speaker B: Then we meet our doctor character. [00:21:13] Speaker C: Yeah. You don't want Larry Fish burn. Can't play chess. Laurence Fishburne [00:21:18] Speaker A: is a [00:21:18] Speaker C: chess grandmaster. [00:21:19] Speaker B: Exactly. [00:21:20] Speaker C: That's a Searching for Bobby Fischer reference. [00:21:23] Speaker A: Yeah. I haven't seen [00:21:24] Speaker C: nobody seen that. [00:21:27] Speaker B: I love that. So it was Johnny Fisher and they're like, are you related to Bobby Fischer? I'm like, the names are spelled differently. Just because your name's rhyme doesn't mean you're related, you idiot. [00:21:37] Speaker A: I mean, it might. It very well might. But yeah, we meet. We meet young, hip doctor and the sourest sourpuss old lady. Man. She just has. She just doesn't give a about anything new. She's like, we're doing things the old fashioned way. She's a hard ass. [00:21:56] Speaker B: I'm gonna look up the goddamn cast list. So I'm gonna refer to him as young hip doctor. This whole episode [00:22:05] Speaker C: he seemed really Dr. Gordon. Like, I've seen him. [00:22:08] Speaker B: Well, la dee da. [00:22:09] Speaker A: His Craig Wasson. See what else he was in. [00:22:15] Speaker C: Yeah, I've seen him in a bunch of stuff. I'm like, oh, it's that guy. But have no idea, you know, where you [00:22:25] Speaker A: see him. Oh, boy. He was in a lot of 70s movies. Jeez, it looks like he's in a lot of garbage. Wow. Wow. [00:22:37] Speaker B: Maybe this is his best role. [00:22:39] Speaker C: Well, don't keep it to yourself. [00:22:40] Speaker A: That means. That means any. Oh, he was in Malcolm X. [00:22:43] Speaker B: Is he alive? [00:22:47] Speaker A: Let's see what it says. This is. This is titillating. Just googling. Just googling. Yeah, he's still alive. [00:22:53] Speaker B: Cut it all out. [00:22:54] Speaker A: He's still alive. He's 72 years old. [00:22:57] Speaker B: All right, we can't get into this trap. I just want to know the names of the characters. [00:23:00] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:23:01] Speaker B: so you got. And then you got Dr. Elizabeth Sims is the source doctor. [00:23:10] Speaker A: Yeah. And then, you know, Larry Fishburne, Max, he's an. He's an orderly taking care of these kids. And we are introduced to. [00:23:22] Speaker C: Well, we should say that like they send Patissa Arquette [00:23:26] Speaker A: to a [00:23:27] Speaker C: mental hospital. So she's in there with a bunch of other kids who have tried to kill themselves. So, you know, this movie is half. Half the runtime of this movie. You're in group therapy. [00:23:45] Speaker A: We got. Elaine is one of the children. [00:23:50] Speaker C: Is she the drug addict? [00:23:51] Speaker A: Oh, wait, no, no, that's Taryn. Taryn is the drug addict. Who is the fucking. Which one is it? [00:23:58] Speaker B: Who? Kincaid. [00:24:00] Speaker A: Jennifer. Jennifer. Penelope Sudro plays Jennifer. She's the. The pyromaniac. And then we got Will, who is the paraplegic Kincaid, who is just always trying to find a way to be put in solitary. And then we got Joey, who is the. The kid who doesn't speak. He's got the. He's got the little teardrop tattoo. So we're led to believe that Joey's killed the Person. Oh, then there's. There's the other kid. There's the fucking Philip. The. The puppet. The puppet kid. [00:24:41] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, we'll get to him. They're all gonna die. So they're basically like, man, all these kids are fucked up. And then Patrick's there and she's freaking out. [00:24:51] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:52] Speaker B: She like, pulls a scalpel on Larry. [00:24:57] Speaker A: Yeah. And she's. [00:25:00] Speaker B: And then she's singing the Freddy lullaby and crying. And then Nancy comes in singing. [00:25:04] Speaker A: Yeah. She's like, where did you learn that? [00:25:09] Speaker B: She goes, I know what's going on. [00:25:12] Speaker A: And we get a. We get a little backstory between, like, Dr. Gordon starts talking to Nancy and, you know, figure out stuff. And then she drops her. She drops her bottle of pills out of her purse. He sees that she's on. [00:25:28] Speaker B: What is that? Hypo. [00:25:30] Speaker A: Hypnophil. It's like a radical anti dream drug for sleeping. [00:25:38] Speaker B: No dreams. [00:25:39] Speaker A: Not dreams. No jeans, just right. [00:25:41] Speaker B: I know the drug for that. Marijuana. [00:25:44] Speaker A: That's true. No dreams on that. [00:25:49] Speaker C: I have super visual. [00:25:52] Speaker B: When I was smoking a ton of weed, I'd never had dreams. Then I like, stop smoking weed. I have like those vivid, crazy, insane dreams. I was like, I'll go back to smoking weed. [00:26:00] Speaker A: I. I do not sleep well when I dream. It's. It's just anxiety. That's all it is. It's just anxiety. [00:26:10] Speaker C: No, I. For my entire life, I've always had, like, very vivid, like, almost cinematic dreams. Like, I can wake up and be like, oh, I had this whole [00:26:21] Speaker B: adventure in my dreams. Social situations. [00:26:27] Speaker A: Yeah, they just suck. That's all there is to it. And then don't forget that there's other orderly who's kind of a jerk. And then the hot nurse, you know, the [00:26:38] Speaker B: hot nurse comes back. [00:26:39] Speaker A: You can't not have a hot nurse. [00:26:41] Speaker B: Hello, nurse. [00:26:43] Speaker C: But all right, let's get to this first kill. [00:26:45] Speaker B: It's a while [00:26:46] Speaker C: because. Yeah, like, that was my thing about the this movie is I was literally, for the first 20 minutes, I'm like, is Freddy Cougar gonna show up at some point? Is. Is something gonna happen? I would like to be scared. Please can or entertain [00:27:09] Speaker B: a limited budget. This is new line in the 80s, [00:27:13] Speaker A: but that is the house. That is the house. [00:27:16] Speaker C: Yeah. They're giving money to Freddy. Freddy's a catch cow at that point. Like I. The effect. I mean, and the effects were great. Like I. For the time, I really did like the effects in this. I just was bored when there were no effects. Like [00:27:35] Speaker A: nothing [00:27:35] Speaker C: was happening. [00:27:36] Speaker A: Melting tricycle is insane. [00:27:39] Speaker B: Yeah. She goes back to sleep, and she wakes back up at the Freddy house in the hospital. And there's a pig on a table, like an apple in its mouth. And it, like, barks at her. [00:27:50] Speaker A: It's real up. Like the house just starts exploding on her. Look at that. Yeah. [00:27:54] Speaker B: Like, collapsing. [00:27:56] Speaker A: And then. And then we. We learned that she can. She can pull other people into her dreams. So that's the power she has. Kristen. [00:28:06] Speaker B: And he's like a big. He comes in as a big snake thing. [00:28:09] Speaker A: Yeah. He's like a weird. It looks like a. [00:28:12] Speaker B: It's like a penis. It looks like a penis. [00:28:16] Speaker A: He looks kind of like a parade float. He's like, big. And. Yeah. Poe. Nancy wakes up and she's. She's like, oh, shit. I was. I was in a Freddy dream. Somebody pulled me into a Freddy dream. Very exciting. And she, like, takes the. Takes the little papier mache house. And she's like, what is this? What is this? This is my house. What are you. Look. What are you doing with this? Very exciting. Look at those. Look at those shoulder pads. Holy. Also the hair. The hair in this movie. It [00:28:55] Speaker C: is [00:28:55] Speaker A: great. [00:28:56] Speaker C: That is a great thing. Yeah, great. 80s. [00:28:59] Speaker A: There are literally people who smoke on screen in this. Seems like it was so fucking dangerous with the amount of hairspray that had to have been used. Insane. [00:29:09] Speaker B: And then we get the group therapy where we're introduced to all these characters. [00:29:12] Speaker A: Yeah, Real talk. Real talk in here. [00:29:15] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:29:15] Speaker A: Real talking here. Johnny. [00:29:18] Speaker C: Yeah. We find out the wheelchair kid is in the wheelchair because he already had an attempt and it left him paralyzed. [00:29:28] Speaker A: And then Terrence, [00:29:30] Speaker C: the too cool to be in there guy is just kind of, like, pacing around. [00:29:35] Speaker B: Wants to be in movies. [00:29:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:37] Speaker B: On television, maybe. [00:29:38] Speaker A: Television. She's the. She's the pyromaniac. And then Taryn is obviously. She's a recovering drug addict. It's very weird how they treat heroin as a casual drug in the 80s. Like, everybody's like. Yeah, just. Everybody's on heroin. Like, what the. [00:29:57] Speaker B: Yeah. CIA was bringing it in. David. [00:30:01] Speaker A: It's casual, [00:30:04] Speaker C: but it is one of the. Like, everything is mentioned but not discussed. Like, they just go around and basically say who they are and why they're there. And then the scene kind of just. [00:30:17] Speaker A: Do you need anything more than that? [00:30:20] Speaker B: They're playing Dungeons and Dragons together. After lights out. [00:30:24] Speaker A: Yeah, well, before lights out, because. Because Larry. Larry Fishburne, the old Max, pushes or picks Will up and puts him in bed. [00:30:33] Speaker B: Yeah. And they kill off her character, I think, or Horse. He's like, what would you do? And he's like, [00:30:40] Speaker A: yeah, [00:30:41] Speaker C: yeah, I forgot the whole Dungeons and Dragons where he's a wizard. [00:30:45] Speaker A: And that comes back later. This is. This is. This is a bit of foreshadowing. [00:30:48] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:30:49] Speaker B: There's a video game. 1 and 6. Try to be like this one. There's like a group of five troubled kids again in the end. But one of the kids is obsessed with video games. And so there's like, Freddy plays a video game and kills a kid. [00:31:03] Speaker A: Hilarious. He [00:31:06] Speaker B: goes, now you're playing with power. [00:31:10] Speaker A: Oh, Freddy. And then. Then we get the beginning of. [00:31:17] Speaker C: Then we get the first kill. Right. [00:31:19] Speaker A: Not. Yes, yet. We get the. We get the creepy date between Nancy and Dr. Gordon. [00:31:23] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's weird. [00:31:25] Speaker A: Like, [00:31:27] Speaker B: this is where Eloy was napping. [00:31:30] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:31:32] Speaker C: probably. I probably do [00:31:34] Speaker A: his age. Johnny. That care. That actor is 72 years old, so I guess technically he was probably late 20s in this movie. That man is late 20s. How the. How the. Is that man late 20s? [00:31:50] Speaker C: Yeah, he would have been late [00:31:53] Speaker A: 20s, [00:31:54] Speaker C: 30s. Yeah, [00:31:55] Speaker B: because you had to fly in the airplane with other people smoking cigarettes. David skin was leatherier. [00:31:59] Speaker A: He looks mid to late 40s. He looks older than the dad in Home Alone. [00:32:05] Speaker C: Back then, people [00:32:05] Speaker A: lived. [00:32:06] Speaker B: That's true, [00:32:07] Speaker A: I guess. [00:32:09] Speaker B: So we cut back to the kids sleeping from the stupid date. [00:32:12] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:32:13] Speaker B: And he has puppets. Was that established? [00:32:18] Speaker A: Yeah, because when. When they're. When Larry's showing Patricia Arquette around, he's like this. This is the puppet kid. And he's like, I should be making them out of wood, but they won't give me a knife. [00:32:30] Speaker B: Oh, [00:32:30] Speaker A: right. [00:32:32] Speaker B: Creepily, one of the puppets becomes Freddy Krueger and cuts itself down, which is pretty cool. [00:32:36] Speaker A: Yeah. And then. And then Freddy Krueger, like, slashes the nerves out of this kid's arms and legs. [00:32:44] Speaker B: Yeah. Like a marionette, to [00:32:46] Speaker A: use him. Like a marionette. [00:32:47] Speaker B: Oh, it's fucked up. [00:32:48] Speaker C: Yeah, I like that effect. I thought that [00:32:51] Speaker A: effect [00:32:51] Speaker C: looked really cool. [00:32:52] Speaker B: Kids like, what the hell are you doing? [00:32:55] Speaker A: They had previously established that this kid's an A sleepwalker. And so everybody's. [00:33:00] Speaker B: You didn't say sonambulus, David. I'm so [00:33:02] Speaker A: shocked. Oh, wow. But you got to. [00:33:03] Speaker B: I know. [00:33:04] Speaker A: You got to. It's a. It's a fun word. Oh, God, it hurts. It hurts. Oh, God, it's so gross. So gross. Oh. Oh, wow. He [00:33:16] Speaker B: leads him up. [00:33:16] Speaker A: See the. All that foot. Oh, God. [00:33:20] Speaker C: Lead them up to the bell tower. [00:33:22] Speaker B: He's like, no, don't do it now. Now. [00:33:25] Speaker A: Like [00:33:27] Speaker C: the [00:33:27] Speaker B: kid who doesn't Talk. He gets a bedpan and starts banging on all the doors. [00:33:30] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:33:31] Speaker B: Or a trash can or something. [00:33:34] Speaker C: Yeah. They send him to go get the nurse with [00:33:37] Speaker B: the other kids in a wheelchair is [00:33:38] Speaker C: confounding. But the wheelchair kid could go faster, arguably because he's on wheels. Like, but you send the kid that can't say [00:33:50] Speaker B: anything [00:33:52] Speaker C: to get help. [00:33:53] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:33:55] Speaker C: And he's like hitting the nurse with the bedpan to like get her to come. And then, then they're [00:34:03] Speaker B: all giant. Freddy, who's the puppet [00:34:05] Speaker C: master. [00:34:06] Speaker A: Bl. Yeah. [00:34:09] Speaker B: And he falls [00:34:11] Speaker A: after. After him, right up there. Little clip of the nerves, a clip of the strings. [00:34:18] Speaker B: And then they, they're like. But the suicide, the meeting next day is hilarious because Gordon's like, listen, he's a killed himself. He gave up. He's like, it's all cuz you're sex obsessed addicts. And like yells at him. It's kind of a weird moment. I thought. [00:34:32] Speaker A: It's very, it's very weird. The [00:34:34] Speaker B: other doctor, she's like, this was not. [00:34:36] Speaker C: There'll [00:34:36] Speaker B: be no other occurrences. Like she's already referring to it as an occurrence when like their friend just killed himself. It's really weird. [00:34:44] Speaker A: Oh, and then, and then Gordon, Gordon just like lashes out and so they throw him in the padded room. Kincaid. Not Gordon. Kincaid. Gordon's the doctor. [00:34:53] Speaker B: Well, then they mean that. They mean the hall real quick. And Nancy's like, what about Naxaquil or whatever? What is [00:34:58] Speaker A: Hypnosil? [00:34:59] Speaker B: Hypnosil. Like what about Hypnosil? They're like, absolutely not. That's experimental. [00:35:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:35:04] Speaker B: And so then they're all like, we're gonna stay up then. [00:35:07] Speaker C: But it. Is she already trying to say that it's Freddy at this point? Is she trying to tell somebody? [00:35:13] Speaker B: I think so. [00:35:15] Speaker C: About Freddy Krueger at this point? [00:35:17] Speaker A: Has she? I, I think, I think so because. [00:35:21] Speaker C: Because I. I swear. Thieves. Yeah. He's like, [00:35:25] Speaker A: it wasn't an accident. It [00:35:26] Speaker C: was Freddie. [00:35:29] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, anyway, anyway, [00:35:31] Speaker B: anyway, immediately [00:35:32] Speaker A: after that we get lady. Lady sitting in the TV room and Larry Fishburne comes in and he's like, you gotta go to sleep. And she's like, oh, please let me watch the television. And. [00:35:46] Speaker C: Well, no, before this. We have the funeral for the kid. No, don't. We have the funeral and then that's when the doctor meets. [00:35:55] Speaker B: I have a phone in front of me. The funeral's after. This is like the night of the funeral is like the next day. [00:36:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:36:05] Speaker C: Oh, they happen really quick. [00:36:07] Speaker A: And while, while ladies sitting in the TV room We've got Taryn the drug addict getting propositioned by the creepy, creepy orderly. And he's just like, I got keys to the drug cabinet. [00:36:20] Speaker B: It's up. [00:36:22] Speaker C: That did. Seemed to come out of nowhere. Like. Like there was no lead up to. [00:36:29] Speaker B: She either finds any. Is it a joint or a cigarette she finds? [00:36:34] Speaker A: I assume. I assumed. I assumed it was a cigarette because she. [00:36:38] Speaker B: Cigarette. [00:36:38] Speaker A: She doesn't. Because she. Since she burns [00:36:40] Speaker B: herself. Joint, though. She's like. [00:36:43] Speaker A: Since she just used [00:36:44] Speaker B: it to put her. Put it on. [00:36:46] Speaker A: Yeah, she. She. She burns herself. So, like, at the beginning, she's like, when can I get my cigarette privileges back, please? So I'm assuming it's just like the ashtray. Somebody didn't smoke it all the way. So, [00:36:57] Speaker B: yeah, [00:36:58] Speaker A: so it's. It's literally a dog end. [00:37:01] Speaker B: And she's watching Zazagabor on like a. [00:37:04] Speaker A: Like a talk show. [00:37:07] Speaker C: It's [00:37:08] Speaker B: a Dick Cav him. [00:37:11] Speaker C: Well, the Dick Cavit show [00:37:12] Speaker B: was a huge [00:37:13] Speaker C: talk show in the 70s and 80s. She had like, Muhammad Ali on Yoko Ono and John Lenon. Like, [00:37:22] Speaker A: Gabor. [00:37:24] Speaker C: Yeah, he's in Forrest Gump. That talk show he's on with John Lennon and Yoko. That's the Dick Cabot Show. Yeah, that's a. It shocked me in the credits when I saw Zaza Gabor and Dick Cavan. I'm like, [00:37:38] Speaker A: what [00:37:38] Speaker C: are they doing in this movie? It just seems mental that those two people would be in a Freddy Krueger. [00:37:45] Speaker A: And then lady falls asleep and she sees Dick Cavett turn into Freddy Krueger and kill Zsa Zsa Gabor. [00:37:52] Speaker C: And then this, to me, was the best. [00:37:55] Speaker A: The best kill. [00:38:01] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:38:02] Speaker A: Yeah. It also gives us the best. The best quote of all time. The opening quote, as we call it. [00:38:09] Speaker B: I haven't kept up with it. I only watched like the first two or three seasons. But I did love how Rick and Morty made fun of Freddy Krueger with the guy who just said after everything, like, [00:38:19] Speaker C: yeah, [00:38:20] Speaker B: scary. He's just like, oh, I thought that was hilarious. Oh, man. [00:38:29] Speaker A: Yeah, there [00:38:29] Speaker B: were them. Were at the funeral, so. Yeah, we're at the funeral. [00:38:33] Speaker C: Well, before the funeral. My favorite thing in this movie is when you cut to her. [00:38:39] Speaker A: Yeah. And they're like, it's a suicide. Like, how the. Do you throw yourself into a TV that's that high off the ground? [00:38:46] Speaker C: Yeah, it's high off the wall. So she's like, suspended out of the tv. And I thought that [00:38:53] Speaker B: was a [00:38:54] Speaker C: great effect. I. That was like, probably my favorite thing in the movie to see. Her like just hanging there. [00:39:01] Speaker A: Elo likes seeing dead teens. You heard it here first. Oh yeah. Give [00:39:06] Speaker C: me a scream franchise any day. [00:39:08] Speaker A: I mean, scream screams. Kind of. Kind of getting a little goofy. Kind of a little goofy. [00:39:16] Speaker B: Fancy six or seven. [00:39:17] Speaker C: I've only seen half of them. [00:39:19] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean I think. I think you could probably stop at three or four. They just get. You saw [00:39:26] Speaker B: six is okay. I never saw seven. [00:39:29] Speaker C: I didn't see seven. [00:39:30] Speaker A: I didn't like a lot seven had a lot of six in it. So it was almost. It was almost unneeded. [00:39:39] Speaker C: It had a lot of six in it. Except for the people who they didn't want to pay to [00:39:43] Speaker B: come back. Said Free Palestine. So they didn't allow back. [00:39:46] Speaker A: Yeah, but yeah. So we're at the. We're at the funeral and Dr. Gordon meets the nun and Nancy's got that fucking dope hat and that poncho. Oh shit. I like how the second half of this movie is just Nancy being a clothes horse. Like let's just put her in some fashion, you guys. [00:40:09] Speaker B: Then they have like a weird night together. Here's a. [00:40:10] Speaker C: Parties [00:40:12] Speaker B: by the fire. Yeah, it's his apartment. [00:40:15] Speaker A: It's. It's one of their. Their apartments. And like he doesn't eat any of the dinner that she made him. [00:40:20] Speaker C: I think this was definitely when I was dosing. [00:40:22] Speaker B: He's just a little too old for. He was too old for us. Yeah. [00:40:25] Speaker A: And she's talking about her little sleep guardian trinket that she has. [00:40:29] Speaker C: But also if you do break down the ages, he's only maybe like [00:40:34] Speaker B: four [00:40:34] Speaker C: to five years older than her. [00:40:36] Speaker A: It's the power [00:40:37] Speaker C: dynamic. He has too much power over her for it to [00:40:42] Speaker A: be an [00:40:43] Speaker C: equal relationship. [00:40:44] Speaker B: So she finally tells all the kids like, yo, Freddy Krueger's real. We buried it. The king they killed under the last Elm street kids. You're the last descendants of the parents that killed. I think she gnome small town. [00:40:59] Speaker A: Yeah, you'd think [00:40:59] Speaker B: it lives on the same street. [00:41:02] Speaker A: Yeah, but. [00:41:04] Speaker B: But [00:41:05] Speaker A: yeah. So [00:41:06] Speaker B: they're the last of them. [00:41:07] Speaker A: She's like. She's like, Freddy's gonna kill you. [00:41:11] Speaker C: And that did felt like. So, okay, so Freddie gets killed by all their parents after he gets off. Yes. [00:41:19] Speaker A: On [00:41:19] Speaker C: a technicality. After killing 20 kids [00:41:24] Speaker B: at Christmas, which doesn't seem [00:41:26] Speaker A: Christmas party. [00:41:30] Speaker C: So. And then these are supposed to be the last [00:41:32] Speaker B: kids [00:41:32] Speaker C: of [00:41:32] Speaker A: those parents. Yeah. [00:41:34] Speaker C: Left of those parents. So then who's Freddy going after? [00:41:40] Speaker B: Just let him kill all these kids. You go away. [00:41:42] Speaker A: It has a little bit of. It has a little Bit of Candyman in there in the later. The later movies where it's like, he's a story that needs to be perpetuated. So he has to have some sort of incident to make his story get told again and again. It gets. It gets very weird. [00:42:02] Speaker C: It gets to. He's just Freddie. [00:42:04] Speaker A: And then it gets to a point where it's. He lives in hell and he's trying to get out of hell. So he has to kill another of Hell's guardians, Jason Voorhees, and they fight to the death, [00:42:16] Speaker C: but he has to make Jason [00:42:17] Speaker B: fall asleep from Destiny's Child. Calls him the F. Slur. [00:42:24] Speaker C: Oh, I remember that. I think I saw Freddy versus Jason at a party in college one [00:42:34] Speaker B: time. [00:42:35] Speaker C: Maybe [00:42:36] Speaker A: it was I. I watched all of these movies in my apartment behind the bowling alley in college on illegal Chinese hosted streaming sites. And so that's. That's also how I watched Freddy vs. Jason. But I haven't seen it in 20 years. [00:42:52] Speaker B: I watched all the Freddy's because I used to watch, like, a series I hadn't seen on, like, Halloween time. And their Blu Rays were cheap on Amazon, like, 10 years ago. Even more than that, even. And I bought them. I watched them one time. All of them. I did saw. I did Halloween. I did Child's Play. [00:43:10] Speaker A: But then we get the. We get the. The group session where they decide they're gonna mass hypnotize everybody so that way they can go hunting for Freddy. [00:43:18] Speaker C: Well, at the funeral, the doctor meets [00:43:20] Speaker A: the nun. Yeah, [00:43:22] Speaker C: hazy nun. Like a weird nun that's like, you need to. Does she say, like, Freddie [00:43:30] Speaker B: Krueger's real and you need to [00:43:31] Speaker C: protect [00:43:33] Speaker A: that? He needs to be buried in consecrated ground. Yeah, she just. She just, like. She piques his interest. And he's. [00:43:40] Speaker B: She's like. She's like, oh, there's something here. It's not just these kids. There's an evil there. And he's like, huh? And then she's, like, gone. And then Nancy comes up and she's like, who are you talking to? He's like, that old lady. He, like, turns around and she's gone. [00:43:51] Speaker A: What? The old lady is gone. I like how. I like how quickly these. These kids all fall asleep. I wish it were so easy. It's like, instantly. And I like, [00:44:02] Speaker C: oh, I can. That easy. [00:44:04] Speaker A: I like how they're like, how do we. How do we tell if we're asleep and they're just, like, [00:44:07] Speaker B: floating? [00:44:08] Speaker A: The wheelchair kid stands up. [00:44:10] Speaker B: No, the balls start floating first. He's hitting those, like, little time Waster desk things. And the balls [00:44:16] Speaker A: are [00:44:16] Speaker B: going, whee. [00:44:17] Speaker A: The Newton's cradle. [00:44:19] Speaker B: And then one girl's like, I'm doing a flip. [00:44:21] Speaker C: Yeah. Because they're all sitting around being like, well, this didn't [00:44:24] Speaker A: work. [00:44:24] Speaker C: This is dumb. [00:44:25] Speaker A: Joey sees the nurse and is like, I'm going to go. I'm going to go get with that nurse. That's a little. That's a little creepy too, because that nurse is definitely way older than this kid. [00:44:33] Speaker B: Patricia catches us a backflip. And then Kincaid bends a chair in half. The. The heroin addict. It is the weird when [00:44:43] Speaker C: they. So they're like, trying to manifest, like, powers, [00:44:49] Speaker A: dream warriors [00:44:50] Speaker C: to beat Freddy. And one kid is a wizard, and the other kid is super smart. [00:44:56] Speaker B: Just wants to have sex with a nerd. And then [00:44:57] Speaker C: Patricia. Yeah. And then Patricia Cat can just [00:45:01] Speaker B: do a car later at the end. It comes in handy at the climax. [00:45:07] Speaker C: I know it comes back. I thought it was so dumb, though, that it's like they have all these powers. They can in dreams. They can do anything they want. And she's like, watch this. And she just kind of cartwheels to the other. [00:45:19] Speaker A: But I mean, you have to. You have to. You have to allow for the badass to be Taryn, who is beautiful and deadly. You can't have two of those. [00:45:26] Speaker C: Yeah, but also, like, her being able to cartwheel isn't proof she's in a dream. Like, she's like, my special power is, oh, I can do this all the time. Like, I don't need to be in a dream. [00:45:41] Speaker B: Yeah. Hard work and practice. Anyone can do a backflip. [00:45:45] Speaker C: But. Yeah, so. [00:45:47] Speaker B: So then Joey, this nurse is seducing Joey. And they care. So that [00:45:50] Speaker C: one kid, [00:45:52] Speaker A: they gotta. You gotta have tits in one scene. Your horror movie in the 80s, Johnny. It's necessary. And she turns and she turns into Mr. F. Kruger himself. Ties him to the bed and then just, like, suspends him over a [00:46:08] Speaker B: bit. Like tongue, like gobs. Yeah, [00:46:13] Speaker C: don't. Don't gloss over that. They're making out. And he bites his tongue and pulls [00:46:18] Speaker B: his [00:46:19] Speaker C: tongue all the way out of his mouth and then spits it at him. And that ties one hand. And then she keeps spitting tongues at him. [00:46:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:46:30] Speaker C: Till all both hands and feet are tied to the bed. [00:46:34] Speaker A: It's pretty intense. [00:46:35] Speaker C: And then what [00:46:38] Speaker B: opens up to, like, a pit of hell. Like skeletons lining the size of, like, a giant pit. [00:46:42] Speaker A: Yeah. I like how the. The tongues are still wriggling as they're tied. As they're on him. [00:46:49] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:46:51] Speaker B: they're all freaking out because, like, it's getting hotter. Everything's getting hot. [00:46:55] Speaker A: And then, like, the. The walls start closing in. [00:46:58] Speaker B: The walls are closing in [00:47:01] Speaker A: and they're like, oh, my God, it's Freddy. And then. And then old. Old Dr. Stone Face comes in and is like, what the. What the hell are you doing in here? What [00:47:11] Speaker B: kind of drugs you all. Yeah. Smoking that marijuana. [00:47:14] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:47:15] Speaker C: Yeah. Because he just walks into a room and everybody's just passed [00:47:18] Speaker B: out in a coma. Yeah, [00:47:21] Speaker A: Joey, he's in a coma. [00:47:25] Speaker B: She's like, this is bad, man. [00:47:27] Speaker A: She's like, this is. This is. This isn't good. You are relieved of duty, Dr. Gordon. And she's like, nancy, you get the out of here. Just to go. [00:47:36] Speaker B: He's clearing out his desk and he's like, what? Oh, no. [00:47:41] Speaker A: It's like, what if I. What have I done? [00:47:46] Speaker C: And then this is where they go to Nancy's dad. [00:47:48] Speaker B: This is where he sees the nun again. [00:47:50] Speaker A: Because he. He drops. [00:47:51] Speaker B: He drops his box. Oh, he's like. [00:47:54] Speaker A: And then he looks up to where the kid jumped off of the. The bell tower, and he's like, oh, that nun's up there. [00:47:59] Speaker C: And is this where we first get [00:48:01] Speaker B: the origin of Freddy? Any of the movies? Yes. [00:48:05] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:48:05] Speaker B: they show. They don't show the scene like, but they show the beginning of the scene. No. Later movie. [00:48:10] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:48:13] Speaker C: but they also. I. So I've heard. You know, everybody's heard it. She. The mother worked in an insane asylum and, you know, is the [00:48:24] Speaker B: product [00:48:25] Speaker C: of a hundred maniacs and everything. But the way the nurse says it is that they just forgot she was there one weekend. [00:48:36] Speaker A: Like, she was doing work. And then they were like, okay, it's 5pm we're gonna lock this door where the room the. The inmates live. And then they [00:48:43] Speaker B: hit her after that, too. [00:48:45] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:48:45] Speaker C: but I didn't think it was. I thought she was gonna be abducted or trapped. No, we. We locked up and left [00:48:55] Speaker B: her in the cell, [00:48:57] Speaker C: and she was still in there. And it was one of those holiday weekends, so we weren't [00:49:03] Speaker A: coming [00:49:03] Speaker C: back for [00:49:03] Speaker A: some. For some reason. It's. It's. It's an open. An open area where a thing. A hundred. A hundred inmates are all just sort of, like, loosely gathered. [00:49:14] Speaker C: Yeah. When we were not there, we let the inmates just kind of roam and [00:49:18] Speaker B: we shut our wing down. [00:49:19] Speaker C: So. But I was. I. You know, having heard that origin, I was like, oh, they just. [00:49:29] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:49:29] Speaker C: Forgot her. [00:49:30] Speaker A: That's. That's. [00:49:32] Speaker C: That's [00:49:32] Speaker A: actually. That's arguably the saddest part of the. The Entire story. Although what happens to her is awful. But just like, her co workers were just like, yeah, sure, she's fine. I guess we'll just. We'll just go home. [00:49:46] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:49:47] Speaker C: Hey, anybody see that Krueger lady? Oh, she must have left already. All [00:49:51] Speaker B: right. [00:49:52] Speaker C: Click. [00:49:53] Speaker A: I'd like to think that my co workers would at least be like, we're gonna peek in to see if we could see if David's still in there. And be like, although. During Snowmageddon, the 2011 snowstorm here in Chicago, I was down in the basement at work doing some work when the snow started. And while I was down in the basement, everybody decided they were going to leave. So when I got back up to the lab, they had just written on the. On the. On the whiteboard, they said, david, don't die. See you later. Like, everybody was gone, and I was like, what the shit is going on here? Here. [00:50:32] Speaker B: That snowstorm was crazy. [00:50:33] Speaker A: That was. It was insane. [00:50:35] Speaker B: Snow apocalypse. [00:50:36] Speaker C: Yeah, [00:50:36] Speaker A: snow apocalypse. [00:50:37] Speaker C: I had to trek [00:50:38] Speaker A: across the [00:50:39] Speaker C: city and. [00:50:39] Speaker A: Gross. [00:50:40] Speaker B: I was a delivery driver for Soup Box at the time. And, [00:50:44] Speaker C: yeah, the tran, like, hour into the storm, a transformer in my [00:50:48] Speaker A: neighborhood [00:50:49] Speaker C: blew up, so we didn't have any heat. So me and my roommate had to go all the way across the city to a friend's place in the middle of the, like, heaviest [00:51:02] Speaker A: part [00:51:03] Speaker C: of the storm. [00:51:03] Speaker A: Oh, dang, that sucks. [00:51:06] Speaker C: And then we were stuck at their place for two days. Yeah, [00:51:09] Speaker B: it was like, two days. [00:51:10] Speaker A: That's. That's how you know it's a crazy amount of snow. Chicago closes anything for it, [00:51:15] Speaker C: right? [00:51:15] Speaker B: Yeah, they close Suit Box. Because then, like, they just close. And I remember that I gotta. I heard the owner went down there who's never there, some guy who owned it. He's like, I got there easily. It was fine. There are plenty of people out. We could have been open. I mean. [00:51:29] Speaker A: I mean, a snowstorm is a pretty good time to eat soup. [00:51:33] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't want to be driving around delivering it in that shit. David. I was driving to Ford fucking Forest. [00:51:38] Speaker A: What do you think of. What do you think about the people who are at home who want that soup? Do you think they want to drive out to get that soup? No, they don't. So they're [00:51:45] Speaker B: just. It was so funny because the first day we closed, they were open the next day. But I happened to be out off that day. The other delivery driver called me. He's like, what was I supposed to do? And I'm like, I. I don't know, man. I was like, I'm not working, I'm not coming in, that's for sure. [00:51:59] Speaker A: Yeah, then we, then we go to the coolest dive bar in the world, Little Nemos, Shout outs to Slumberland and the, the walking bed. And we meet. [00:52:08] Speaker B: There was an NES game with Little Nemo. [00:52:10] Speaker A: Oh, nice. Then we, we meet Nancy's dad and he is just. [00:52:15] Speaker B: He's plastered, [00:52:16] Speaker A: he's drunk as a skunk. I like that. He's. He's at a dive bar with his, his Miller High Life and a glass. Like, why, why bother with the glass? Why don't you drink it out of the can, dude? [00:52:28] Speaker B: That's a classy beer in the 80s. [00:52:30] Speaker C: And he's in his full [00:52:31] Speaker A: on copy. It's a security guard uniform. [00:52:35] Speaker B: Oh, is it a security guy? I [00:52:37] Speaker C: thought he [00:52:37] Speaker B: was. [00:52:37] Speaker A: Yeah, he used to be a cop. Yeah. And now he's gotten bused down to security. [00:52:41] Speaker C: Well, there goes my. Why didn't he call the rest of the police? [00:52:44] Speaker A: Well, that's a good reason. [00:52:47] Speaker C: Yeah, there's a security guard [00:52:51] Speaker A: and then. [00:52:51] Speaker C: But yeah, they have a. And he just, he treats his daughter like, oh, you're still going on about [00:52:59] Speaker B: crazy friends. You still believe it? What you saw it. [00:53:02] Speaker C: Didn't all her friends die? I think every single kid, his [00:53:09] Speaker A: coping mechanisms are to drink himself stupid and say, yeah, that didn't happen. Oh, Mr. Dingus. And then, and then Dr. Gordon gets a page from the, from the rest of the patients and he sends Nancy and he's like, nancy, you gotta go. You gotta go help him. [00:53:26] Speaker C: Yeah, because what's happening with the other patients? Yeah, [00:53:28] Speaker A: they've taken Taryn. Or not Taryn, Patricia Arquette to the, the soft room. Yeah, they give, they give them a set of gifts. [00:53:41] Speaker C: That's it. [00:53:41] Speaker A: A set of give. [00:53:43] Speaker C: So they, yeah, they split [00:53:44] Speaker A: up. Dr. Gordon's like, now listen here, Nancy's dad, [00:53:48] Speaker B: listen here, Nancy's dad, [00:53:50] Speaker A: he flips over, he flips over a table. It was just like, we're gonna go, we're gonna go find this motherfucker's body. Because I was just [00:53:58] Speaker B: told, [00:53:59] Speaker A: I was, I was just told they gotta put it in consecrated ground. So we're gonna, we're gonna get rid of it. And I could have sworn at one point in the previous, in one of the previous movies, they mentioned that they burned his body, but I guess. No. Did they burn his body? Didn't bury it in this junkyard? [00:54:17] Speaker C: Yeah, they burned his body. And then [00:54:19] Speaker A: not really buried. Just put it up, put in a Cadillac trunk. [00:54:25] Speaker C: But yeah, the, the nurse tells Dr. Gordon. That the only way to defeat Freddy is to bury [00:54:31] Speaker A: his bones. [00:54:32] Speaker C: And [00:54:33] Speaker B: so he's on his way with the dad. They stop by a Catholic church. He's gonna steal some. Yeah, [00:54:38] Speaker A: I like. I like how he. He's like, I'm gonna go in here. And he takes the keys, and then he takes the bottle of whiskey that the dad is drinking out of. I've. [00:54:48] Speaker C: Yeah. Oh, that's. Yeah, that's why they have to go meet her dad, because her dad is the only one that knows where Freddy Bones are. [00:54:56] Speaker B: He's leaving the church. He was caught by a priest. He's like, sorry, I really need it. I can give you my driver. [00:55:01] Speaker A: Yeah, he's. He's stealing. He's stealing a crucifix. And he's like, here, take my driver's license. I'll bring this back. We don't get any resolution on that. So I don't know if he gets his driver's license back or not. [00:55:10] Speaker C: We also don't know how he gets out of there. [00:55:12] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, [00:55:13] Speaker C: it'll come later. But we don't know how he gets. [00:55:16] Speaker B: Sleep in bed. So Larry's like, he can't come in here. I'm told not to. [00:55:21] Speaker A: Yeah. And he's like, you can't go see. You can't go see Patricia Arquette. Because I've been told absolutely not. No. No way, no how. And Nancy's just like, well, but can I see everybody else? And he's like, yeah, they're in the TV room. Seems like an oversight on his part, just being like, yeah, I guess you can go see him. It's got to be said, I love Nancy's dad's little truck. His little Nissan, his little. His little tiny, tiny truck. A little daddy truck. [00:55:49] Speaker C: So, yeah, they all. They all go to sleep hoping that they'll find Patricia. [00:55:56] Speaker A: Well, that she's. She's gonna. She's gonna. Yeah, [00:56:01] Speaker C: yeah. But they say, like, well, how do we know? Nancy's like, we just gotta do it and trust that. [00:56:08] Speaker B: In their sleep. [00:56:09] Speaker A: And they're asleep. And then Patricia Arquette's like, oh, my God, you were here. And then Freddy starts trying to get through the walls. There's feathers everywhere. Oh, my God. [00:56:19] Speaker C: And this is when he starts just moving [00:56:21] Speaker A: people down. So first he's. He's separating them because they talked about how the only way they can feed him is together. And separation happens here. And Patricia Arquette, like, her dream becomes like an idealized version of what was happening at the beginning of the movie where her mom comes In. And instead of being just pissed off at her is like, oh, honey. And it's like, nurturing and caring. And then it turns out that the man looking for bourbon is Freddy Krueger. And he doesn't like being kept waiting. [00:56:55] Speaker B: I like. I like. I like him in the tuxedo, though. [00:56:59] Speaker A: He's like, I said, where's the bourbon, bitch? [00:57:03] Speaker B: Then he rips her head off, and the head starts yelling. You always run off everyone I bring home. [00:57:10] Speaker C: Here's where we finally, like, it's taken all the way into the third act of the movie to get, like, Freddy actually, like, talking. [00:57:18] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:57:21] Speaker C: Like, [00:57:22] Speaker A: doing stuff. The next. The next death we get is Taryn. She gets taken to an alley with the entrance to another CD bar. And she gets, like. She gets OD'd by Freddy Syringe. [00:57:36] Speaker B: Gloves turn into heroin. And then she has that creepy moment. It's like, little mouths. [00:57:41] Speaker A: Yeah, [00:57:42] Speaker C: yeah. Her track marks turn into little mouth. [00:57:45] Speaker B: That's gross. [00:57:46] Speaker C: I thought that was a cool effect. [00:57:49] Speaker A: Yeah, it's. It's real gross. [00:57:51] Speaker B: And then we get the wizard boy and Freddy. Freddy's like. He's like, you're gonna be back in the chair once you wake up. And the wheelchair starts chasing him down. [00:58:01] Speaker A: Yeah, he. It's like this murder wheelchair that's got spikes and knives all over it. [00:58:05] Speaker B: Arlis Loveless will probably like that wheelchair. Anyone? Wild Wild West. Come on, give me a break. [00:58:14] Speaker A: Sorry, Johnny. How. I don't think I've seen Wild Wild west since 1998. But [00:58:19] Speaker B: you're on a. It came out in 1999. So what did you. What did you see? A pre. [00:58:24] Speaker A: I thought it came out the [00:58:26] Speaker B: Academy. [00:58:27] Speaker A: Yes, yes. [00:58:30] Speaker C: No, it [00:58:30] Speaker A: came [00:58:31] Speaker C: out in 99. The greatest [00:58:32] Speaker B: year [00:58:32] Speaker A: for movies, right? [00:58:34] Speaker B: Because I was collecting. We were on vacation in Florida when we saw it. And I was making a stop at KFC's and Taco Bell's exclusively to get episode one cups. [00:58:44] Speaker C: Well, speaking of Laurence Fishburne, this is why Will Smith turned down the Matrix [00:58:48] Speaker A: is Wild, Wild west [00:58:50] Speaker C: to go [00:58:50] Speaker B: do Wild [00:58:51] Speaker C: Wild West. And that's how Lorne Fishburne got the part. Oh, no. It was Keanu. Was [00:58:58] Speaker B: it Keanu Reeves, [00:59:01] Speaker C: Will Smith? Yeah. Yeah. [00:59:03] Speaker B: And that's why he accepted, because he said. He said in an interview. I read Matrix. I didn't understand it. I passed. It was a huge hit. I got the same feeling when I read League Extraordinary Gentleman. I didn't understand it, so I figured it must be a huge hit, so I joined it. Then he almost fought the director. They got a fist Fight on set. [00:59:24] Speaker C: Who was the director? [00:59:25] Speaker B: I can't remember. [00:59:26] Speaker A: What. What an absolutely wonderful human being. Shan. Conor. [00:59:31] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. He likes hitting women. And [00:59:34] Speaker A: he was nothing but a good guy. He was a good guy. No, [00:59:39] Speaker C: he likes laughing. [00:59:40] Speaker B: Get it [00:59:41] Speaker C: correct. [00:59:42] Speaker A: I'm. I'm. Did he. Did he say he likes it? I thought he said it was necessary and. [00:59:48] Speaker B: Probably [00:59:50] Speaker A: necessary and. Right. Oh, so then we. Then we cut to Nancy. Nancy and Patricia can't find each other in this dilapidated house. Don't [01:00:01] Speaker B: forget, he wizards. Freddy. [01:00:02] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, he was. He was. It's Freddy. And it's [01:00:04] Speaker B: kind of. Kind of looks like Spawn. He's got that big. Get that big collar. Yeah, [01:00:08] Speaker A: I got that big color. I Wonder if Todd Mc McFarland was inspired in any way. [01:00:12] Speaker B: Kind of looks like [01:00:13] Speaker A: he's shooting. He's shooting that green. That green lightning, like necroplasm. [01:00:16] Speaker B: Then he gets stabbed in the neck, right? [01:00:18] Speaker A: Yeah, [01:00:19] Speaker B: yeah, [01:00:19] Speaker A: he gets stabbed. And he. He dead. He died. [01:00:22] Speaker C: And all these kills are, like, back to. Back to, like. They are literally. [01:00:27] Speaker B: There's no time between. [01:00:28] Speaker A: Yeah, it's just like. [01:00:31] Speaker C: Like, it's [01:00:31] Speaker A: like they forgot, oh, we got to kill all these kids. But, yeah. Nancy and Patricia Arquette find each other. And then the wall starts caving in, and it's Kincaid being a strong man. [01:00:44] Speaker C: Yeah, he burst. He Kool Aids into the room. [01:00:47] Speaker A: And then. And then he starts. He starts doing a little macho peacocking. And he's like, come on, Freddie Tiny Dick. And then, like, this weird. This weird door just appears. And they're like, [01:00:59] Speaker B: I guess we go through. [01:01:01] Speaker A: Let's go to the door, you guys. And so they go into the door and go down, like, the world's scariest spiral staircase. And then while they're doing that, Nancy's dad and Dr. Gordon finally pull up to the Cadillac that has Freddy's bones in the back of it. [01:01:16] Speaker C: It's in the middle of a junkyard. It was, like, way in the back of a junkyard. And piles and piles [01:01:21] Speaker A: of cars. It's hidden in the middle [01:01:23] Speaker C: all around. [01:01:25] Speaker A: And then while. While Dr. Gordon is, you know, opening the trunk, Nancy's dad is like, oh, I'm gonna get in the car and get out of here. And so he scrambles into the car and closes the door and locks it. And then he's like. And then Dr. Gordon's like, [01:01:42] Speaker C: Yeah, because he tried that before. And Gordon had the keys. Like, [01:01:47] Speaker A: yeah. [01:01:47] Speaker C: When they got out of the church, Gordon took the keys with them, and he's like, I'm taking these keys. So you don't go anywhere. And then. Yeah. When he tried to jump out in the truck and drive off again, he's like, oh, forgot [01:02:00] Speaker B: I [01:02:00] Speaker C: take the keys [01:02:01] Speaker A: with you. Say the magic word. [01:02:06] Speaker C: But then is that when all the cars [01:02:08] Speaker B: start [01:02:09] Speaker C: turning on, like, Freddy can feel it [01:02:13] Speaker B: back to the kids, and they're like the boiler room. Like fantasy land. We see Freddie in. At the beginning of the first movie, making his glove. [01:02:20] Speaker A: Mm. It's [01:02:22] Speaker B: like. It's like his. Like Dan is a demon. [01:02:24] Speaker A: Yeah. And then we see they. They find. They find Joey suspended over the. The hell pit. [01:02:30] Speaker B: Yeah. Still with the tongues. Freddie's just like, screaming at him. [01:02:35] Speaker A: And they. They find they. They go down off the ledge to go fight him and free Joey. [01:02:42] Speaker B: She does the backflip. And I was like, yes. [01:02:45] Speaker A: Yeah. And then they. They stab Freddy with a rebar. And then he pulls it out and licks it like a creepoid. [01:02:52] Speaker B: And then we get to one of the creepiest things, because I remember, see, this is the thing about Freddy. He was everywhere. He'd run into Freddy when he least expected it. I remember I was at a costume shop in Tulsa when I was in like, elementary school, and I hadn't seen this movie. I wasn't aware of the concept. He had like, little faces on his chest. [01:03:07] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:03:08] Speaker B: And I saw the costume piece for sale at a costume shop around Halloween. It scared the. Out of me. [01:03:13] Speaker A: Yeah. So he's got the. The screams. The screams. Screams are what fuel him. And the screams of children are the most delicious. [01:03:21] Speaker B: And he has like little faces on his chest, like, screaming out. Cool effect. [01:03:25] Speaker A: For. For return listeners of the Regarding Spawn podcast, we have referenced this very depiction of Freddy multiple times within our course of covering mostly King Spawn. But I think a couple of main title spawned. [01:03:39] Speaker B: I told the story about being freaked out by the thing of the Halloween store too, [01:03:43] Speaker A: probably. But you know what? It's a good story. [01:03:46] Speaker B: I was like, why? I was like, offended. I was like, why would they sell that? That's scary. I was like, what the hell? It's like when you walk down the aisle of blockbusters to freak yourself out. [01:03:56] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Oh, man. The. The Dead Alive. The Dead alive cover used to scare the shit out of me. [01:04:02] Speaker B: Evil. That too Scared. Mean with the eyes. The skeleton with the eyes. [01:04:06] Speaker A: My favorite. My favorite was actually the Jack Frost cover. The lenticular one that was between a happy snowman and a killer snowman. I [01:04:14] Speaker B: had a Jurassic park, the Lost World one where the T. Rex would bust through the logo. [01:04:19] Speaker A: Oh, nice. [01:04:20] Speaker C: And like the killer Jack Frost or The door or the Michael Keaton Jack Frost. [01:04:24] Speaker A: The. The. The Killer Jack Frost. Terrible, terrible movie, by the way. [01:04:28] Speaker C: I don't think I. [01:04:29] Speaker A: Awesome cover. But [01:04:30] Speaker B: then Freddy's about to get him. [01:04:32] Speaker A: He [01:04:32] Speaker B: pulls the rebar out there. He's like, oh, they're with my bones. I gotta go. Yeah. Like, zoo. Like, he, like, new powers. We've never established these powers before, by the way, but he can just, like, go take over his skeleton. [01:04:45] Speaker A: Yeah, I guess. And we see Nancy's dad and Dr. Gordon digging the hole. The cars [01:04:49] Speaker B: are coming alive. [01:04:51] Speaker A: And then Gordon's like, I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna grab these bones. And the bones just like. Yeah. They're like Ray Harryhausen themselves. [01:05:02] Speaker C: And then all the, like, crushed cars start turning up. [01:05:06] Speaker B: I love a skeleton, though. I thought it was fun. [01:05:07] Speaker A: Yeah, [01:05:08] Speaker B: I love a skeleton. [01:05:09] Speaker C: Yeah, that was fun. That was very army of Darkness. [01:05:13] Speaker A: And the skeleton. Freddy's skeleton kills Nancy's dad and then beans Dr. Gordon on the head and then throws a shovel full of dirt on him. And he's like, yeah, that's good. We're done here. That guy's done. [01:05:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:05:28] Speaker A: Like, no follow through. This guy. [01:05:31] Speaker B: Then they go back to this hallway, and Freddy's, like, sucking them into mirrors. [01:05:34] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:05:35] Speaker B: And they're trapped in them. But then Joey finally talks [01:05:40] Speaker A: and he screams. He screams so loud that it busts all the meat. All the mirrors. [01:05:44] Speaker B: I'm like, oh, that was your superpower, Joey. Which is. I don't know. Okay, I guess. [01:05:50] Speaker A: Sure, [01:05:52] Speaker B: sure. [01:05:52] Speaker C: But also, like, going back, Freddy thinks he's trapped the doctor there because he makes all the cars collapse. Like, all the cars start turning. [01:06:02] Speaker A: Smash the little tiny Nissan truck. [01:06:05] Speaker C: Yeah, they smash the truck and they collapse to where he's in, like, an impassable circle. Like, he's in a pit. Somehow he does get out. That how Will never be spoken of or shown. But [01:06:19] Speaker A: don't worry. [01:06:20] Speaker B: The hilarious moment where Nancy's dad. I forgot it was a fake out when I was watching it, because when [01:06:24] Speaker A: he [01:06:24] Speaker B: came in, I was like, that's hilarious. This is this movie. He's like, hello, I passed the other side. My daughter. [01:06:29] Speaker A: Yeah. And she's like, oh, dad. And she gives him a hug, and he turns into Freddy and he stabs her in the gut. [01:06:34] Speaker B: Stabs in the gut with his claw. [01:06:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:06:37] Speaker B: They're like, no. And then Gordon wakes up. He's like, gotta consecrate the ground. [01:06:43] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:06:44] Speaker B: So he does the holy water. And then that, in real time, like, rips Freddy. [01:06:49] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:06:49] Speaker B: She also stabs him with his own. Before that. [01:06:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Because Freddy's attacking Patricia Arquette. And with her dying gasps, Nancy is just like, fuck you, motherfucker. [01:07:00] Speaker B: And stabs him. And then she puts the holy water and he puts the cross on. [01:07:05] Speaker A: Yeah, I like, I like that. [01:07:06] Speaker B: The [01:07:07] Speaker A: flame, the flaming cross like forms in his forehead as the crucifix is put on it. [01:07:13] Speaker B: Yeah. And then he turns into like a little magical swirl. [01:07:17] Speaker A: Yeah. Swoop. He turns into a Star Trek. The Next Generation effect is what he does. [01:07:24] Speaker B: And then Nancy's dad and everyone goes to sleep. That's the end of the movie. [01:07:31] Speaker C: Well, yeah. Who makes it out? Patricia, Archie [01:07:35] Speaker A: and Joey [01:07:38] Speaker C: and Joey [01:07:38] Speaker B: and Gordon's just. And then. Yeah. [01:07:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:07:44] Speaker B: No one knew where the. They were. Like, only her dad knew where those bones were. [01:07:48] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:07:49] Speaker B: Like, how did they find him? [01:07:50] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:07:50] Speaker A: But then, like, he sneaks it. He sneaks away from the, the ceremony of the funeral and then she disappears and he sees. He sees the gravestone and he's like, oh my God. You were his mother. [01:08:05] Speaker B: Yeah, [01:08:07] Speaker C: the. Yeah, the nun was [01:08:10] Speaker A: Amanda. [01:08:11] Speaker C: Amanda. [01:08:12] Speaker A: Mary Helena. Amanda Krueger. [01:08:14] Speaker B: And then he's going to bed, [01:08:15] Speaker C: but [01:08:16] Speaker B: he has that Nancy sleep token and he has the house that Patricia Arquette made. Why did he end up with that? [01:08:23] Speaker A: Probably because Nancy. Nancy had it. And he's [01:08:26] Speaker B: okay. [01:08:27] Speaker A: He's sad that Nancy died. And then while he's sleeping. Yeah, just like the window light. [01:08:35] Speaker C: You [01:08:36] Speaker B: get the awesome Dawkins song to end it. Yeah. [01:08:46] Speaker A: With a Dream Warriors. Maybe tonight. Maybe tonight I'll be gone. [01:08:58] Speaker C: And that's when I. I let out the biggest Meh. [01:09:04] Speaker B: David, you have some noisy puppies. [01:09:06] Speaker A: I do have some noisy puppies. This Mr. Dingus is just throwing a fit. I can't believe [01:09:10] Speaker B: he's asleep. Wake him up. Give him Hydroquill. [01:09:14] Speaker A: Get it. Get out. Get out of my dog's brain. Freddy Krueger. Could you imagine? He would get. He would get destroyed in these dogs brain if he, if he tried to go into this. Oh, [01:09:23] Speaker B: they'd bite his balls off. [01:09:24] Speaker A: Oh, boy, oh boy. They would. They would have the rabbit dream and he would be. But all that to say, we got to rate this puppy. [01:09:34] Speaker B: It's time to rate the puppy. So yeah, Nightmare on Elm Street 3. I like this movie. I think it's fun in this series. It's definitely one of the best. There are some really low points, but they're all kind of fun. There's some good gags in most of them. One is the only really scary one, I guess. I mean, if I Saw this as a kid. This would scare the out of [01:09:54] Speaker A: me. [01:09:54] Speaker B: Yeah, it did. The idea of this movie scared the out of me as a kid. [01:09:58] Speaker C: I think, I think it. You have to, like, see it as a kid. That's my theory with Star wars as well. I'm like, Once you're over 12, don't try to watch Star Wars. It's dumb. It's. But if you watch that when you're four, five, it's the greatest piece of art you can ever imagine. And you'll be married [01:10:20] Speaker B: to it for the rest of your life. [01:10:21] Speaker C: Like, [01:10:21] Speaker A: yeah, we do. We should. We should have a boy. A boy [01:10:24] Speaker B: could have [01:10:25] Speaker C: been [01:10:25] Speaker B: here, could have been in Chicago. That's so stupid. [01:10:29] Speaker A: And they're gonna leave, so. [01:10:31] Speaker C: But [01:10:32] Speaker B: eventually, [01:10:33] Speaker C: yeah, [01:10:33] Speaker B: maybe. [01:10:35] Speaker C: But seeing I. I imagine seeing Nightmare on Elm street when you're like, you know, 12, 13 years old. It's the scariest thing you've ever seen in your life. And also funny and also like, [01:10:51] Speaker A: yeah, [01:10:52] Speaker C: this is great seeing it when you're 45. [01:10:56] Speaker B: Freddy Krueger is one of the things my mom kind of does like nasty, because she kind of let us get into whatever she did. Not like Freddy Krueger. And like, so he was off limits. And I just remember, like, [01:11:07] Speaker A: would it surprise you, Johnny, that my [01:11:09] Speaker C: mom felt the same? [01:11:11] Speaker B: That doesn't surprise me. [01:11:13] Speaker A: Lisa Williams is nothing. I'm not going to [01:11:15] Speaker B: see them all kids and kindergarten, I knew about them because kids on the playground would tell me about what they'd seen. It would horrify. [01:11:20] Speaker A: Well, like when. When I was in like third or fourth grade, that was like a status symbol is I got to watch the Freddy movies. And it's like, oh, you got to watch Freddy's. [01:11:31] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:11:32] Speaker A: So it had a cultural cachet that was completely divorced from its quality as a film series. [01:11:42] Speaker B: Right. But [01:11:43] Speaker A: also like, [01:11:43] Speaker B: nasty. It's nasty. It's mean spirited. I don't know. I don't love the series. At the big slashers, I guess. I guess Freddy's my. I don't know what is my favorite? I mean, if Texas Chainsaw Council counts, it would be that. [01:11:57] Speaker A: I mean, of the slasher series. The Friday the 13th are my favorite slasher series. Just because Jason doesn't say a goddamn thing. He just menaces around and [01:12:07] Speaker B: okay. [01:12:08] Speaker A: And he fucking. That great. That great. Kill with the lady in the sleeping bag. And he's just like, [01:12:15] Speaker B: no, I like this movie. I think it's a hoot. Great special effects. [01:12:19] Speaker A: Amazing special effects. [01:12:20] Speaker B: It's of its time. It's a fun Little time capsule. I'm gonna give it three. What do we do at a five, Dave? Or four? I can't remember. [01:12:28] Speaker A: Five. [01:12:30] Speaker B: We do out of five. We [01:12:31] Speaker A: do out of five. [01:12:32] Speaker B: Okay. [01:12:33] Speaker A: Unless. Unless there was something weird we did with Sleepy Hollow that only had four. [01:12:37] Speaker B: No, no, no, no. We didn't do that. I'm gonna give it four and a half out of five. [01:12:45] Speaker A: Excellent. Excellent. Eloy, would you like to go second or would you like to go last? [01:12:50] Speaker C: I'll go second. As the. I've said, like, I don't know, I just. I like the effects. Like, yeah, there are some quippy one liners, but for the most part, I was just kind of bored with the movie and just could not keep my attention on it. And, yeah, I'm guessing that's how, like, all the Freddy movies are from the 80s and 90s is. You know, he shows up, he says a couple one liners, he. And you get some inventive kills here and there. Like, I don't know. I would probably give it like a two. Like, [01:13:32] Speaker B: I [01:13:32] Speaker C: think also, like, if you're with a group of people and you're watching this and having fun and, like, commenting on, like, how dumb it is and like, oh, isn't that fun? Like, how he killed that person? It adds a lot more than to just like, sitting down and watching it on your couch. [01:13:54] Speaker A: That's true. [01:13:55] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah. I can. I mean, listen, I see the merit in it and God bless the people who love it. Like, that's not my. Not my cup of tea. But again, like, horror really isn't my thing. [01:14:12] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:14:13] Speaker C: Although I've seen the best five horror movies this year that are out. That's Obsession. Back Rooms Buddy, Resident Evil. And you can see everything. And if you watch, you can see everything. It is a tense thriller that scares you. [01:14:33] Speaker A: Interesting, interesting, interesting. Well, very nice, Very nice. I. I recently watched Hokum, and that was a weird. That was a weird one. It wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be, but. But I'm kind of still not sure what I think about it. But yeah, as far as. As far as Nightmare on Elm street three goes. Oh, man, those dream warriors, they're great. I can't believe we completely skipped over Nancy talking to Joey in his coma. And Freddy. Freddy carving a message to Nancy in the boy's chest that says, come and get him. [01:15:06] Speaker B: Oh, I forgot about that. [01:15:08] Speaker A: It's great. This. These movies were definitely made for cinema houses for you to either A, sneak into as an underage child or B, be A horny teenager taking your significant other to try to get some hand on whatever action for an evening. And one singular gross out. So God. God love him for that. This is. This is not high cinema in any way shape, but I will definitely give it. I will definitely give it four Larry Fishburns because it's fun as I love. I love. I love it. Sorry. Sorry, Eloy. But that's fine. [01:15:57] Speaker B: If you ever have. If you have a restaurant, you have a fish sandwich, you call it. The lyrics. Larry, Larry, fish bond. [01:16:03] Speaker A: Very nice. But I mean like watching this with people. Excellent. But this is one of those things that you can imbibe whatever imbibable product that you prefer and then just stare at this and then just like laugh because it's so dumb and you could do something else and not miss a goddamn thing because it's a very loosely plotted. [01:16:33] Speaker B: Yeah, [01:16:34] Speaker A: it's great. It's great. So yeah, four Larry fishes. [01:16:40] Speaker C: Well, there you go. And yeah, if you guys enjoy them, go right ahead and watch them all the time. I don't [01:16:46] Speaker B: think I'll be Thomas Earl Haley. One sucks. [01:16:49] Speaker A: Oh, the. The newer one, [01:16:52] Speaker B: the [01:16:52] Speaker C: reboot. [01:16:54] Speaker B: Reboot. This is a remake reboot. Yeah, [01:16:56] Speaker A: I haven't. I haven't seen any of those ones. [01:16:58] Speaker B: Sucks. And [01:16:59] Speaker C: that came out what, like 15 years ago? [01:17:03] Speaker B: Nine or ten. [01:17:04] Speaker A: Jesus Christ. I feel like it was only a few years ago. [01:17:07] Speaker B: It was like a year after Watchmen. [01:17:09] Speaker A: Damn. [01:17:09] Speaker B: See, like was in Watchmen [01:17:11] Speaker C: and then that's the last Freddy thing that there's been. [01:17:16] Speaker B: Yeah, [01:17:17] Speaker A: I mean, there's no more. There's no more read on those bones. Is clearly detailed. But gotta [01:17:22] Speaker B: get Robert England to play one more time before he kicks the bucket. Come on. [01:17:25] Speaker C: Do you think he even wants to, though? [01:17:28] Speaker B: I don't know. [01:17:28] Speaker C: Do you think you do a legacy quel where Freddy has a hell child, [01:17:33] Speaker B: a black daughter? [01:17:35] Speaker C: Yeah, [01:17:36] Speaker A: I'm sure. I'm sure he probably has way more fun on the. The con circuit just yucking it up with fans than he does actually getting into the makeup up and having to do all the physicality because there's a. It is. It is a performance. He is doing a lot of physical stuff. And Robert Englund is old as. So I can imagine that it's just not fun to try to do a lot of that stuff anymore. [01:18:05] Speaker B: I think the rides got tangled up. I'm not quite sure. Like those. All those rights have been crazy forever. It's took them forever to make this series. Series on Peacock, the Crystal Lake because the rice were tied up forever. [01:18:16] Speaker A: Ooh I started watching that and I got like 10 minutes into the first episode, and I'm intrigued, but I don't know if I actually want to watch it. I don't know if I want to give a shit about Pamela Voorhees or Jason as a bullied child. I don't, I don't think I need that emotional connection with my tall, brooding slasher man. [01:18:38] Speaker C: You don't want to uncover Jason's emotional trauma that leads him to become a machete wielding demon. Killer. [01:18:48] Speaker A: No, I mean killer [01:18:49] Speaker C: demon. [01:18:49] Speaker A: I just, I want. He's, he's a. He's a blank slate. He's just. He's just not. [01:18:55] Speaker C: In 2026, all right? In 2026, [01:18:59] Speaker A: you [01:19:00] Speaker C: need emotional trauma. [01:19:02] Speaker A: If I, If I wanted. If I wanted my Jason Voorhees to be emotionally traumatized and have that built in backstory, I would just watch Halloween. Thank you very much. [01:19:15] Speaker C: The [01:19:16] Speaker B: original, he doesn't have all that. He's not his sister. He's not his brother. Until the second one. [01:19:20] Speaker A: Well, but I mean, there's at least. There's at least a story. Like the story of the child of Michael Myers. Like, what happens, what he does. He [01:19:30] Speaker B: just starts killing. [01:19:31] Speaker A: It builds on that. Whereas Jason Voorhees is just a child that drowns and then his mom gets pissed off and kills a whole bunch of horny teens. [01:19:38] Speaker B: Then he jumps off you, [01:19:39] Speaker A: and then he, he. He attacks the lady. So what's [01:19:43] Speaker B: your. What's your favorite. We said our favorite slasher franchises. What is your favorite slasher franchise, Eloy? [01:19:49] Speaker C: I mean, I don't know if I have, like a franchise. I have, like, again, like, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I've only ever seen the. That's [01:19:56] Speaker B: what I said. That counts. [01:19:57] Speaker C: And I really like that. But I've never seen any, any of the other franchise. [01:20:02] Speaker B: The one Matthew Ham is pretty good. [01:20:05] Speaker C: Just like Scream. Scream I liked. I only really ever revisit the first one. Like, I've seen the others, but [01:20:14] Speaker B: the first two are good. [01:20:17] Speaker C: I can watch the first one over and over again. I remember watching that in theaters and thinking it was really, really cool. [01:20:24] Speaker A: Well, maybe. Maybe as a sort of slant, kind of. [01:20:27] Speaker B: Happy Death Day. We like that Sler franchise. [01:20:31] Speaker C: I heard the third one is coming. [01:20:33] Speaker A: Yeah, we're seeing that. We're seeing that. [01:20:36] Speaker B: God. What's the one where Vince V. Where they switch? [01:20:38] Speaker A: Oh, [01:20:39] Speaker B: it's like Fre. Freaky. Freaky Friday. It's called Freaky. I like Freaky. [01:20:43] Speaker A: I love those movies. I love them so much. I [01:20:46] Speaker B: didn't see Hard Eyes, but I heard it's good. [01:20:49] Speaker A: I don't think I've seen Hard Eyes. [01:20:50] Speaker B: That's his newest one. [01:20:51] Speaker C: Oh. You know, the ones we saw, John and maybe if a third annual Halloween episode happens. Unfriended. [01:21:02] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. We could do Unfriended. [01:21:04] Speaker C: Unfriended [01:21:05] Speaker B: two. You really like, right? [01:21:06] Speaker C: Yeah, Well, I. The first one is the best one. And I've seen the second one. [01:21:11] Speaker B: The second one's ridiculous. [01:21:12] Speaker C: There's a third one, [01:21:13] Speaker B: that one where there's, like, the cult and they're going down, like, the hell tunnel. [01:21:16] Speaker A: I have not heard of this. Unfriended, you say? [01:21:19] Speaker B: We saw it in theaters. [01:21:20] Speaker C: It's a ghost that haunts Facebook. [01:21:22] Speaker A: Oh. [01:21:24] Speaker C: And it's [01:21:24] Speaker A: all [01:21:25] Speaker C: screens. It's a screen thriller. [01:21:27] Speaker A: Oh, okay. I. I know of that one. I haven't seen it. [01:21:31] Speaker B: That [01:21:31] Speaker A: was. [01:21:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:21:33] Speaker C: And it is what I deem the greatest reveal in cinema history as to why this girl does what she does. [01:21:43] Speaker B: It's kind of true. It's crazy. It's wild. It's unpredictable. [01:21:46] Speaker C: You will never. [01:21:47] Speaker B: I was with you in the theater. I was like, is this real? [01:21:53] Speaker C: It is [01:21:53] Speaker A: interesting. [01:21:54] Speaker C: It is so good. And it's like 88 minutes and it's. Or 81 minutes and was all shot, like, pretty much in like, one continuous thing. [01:22:05] Speaker A: That's pretty. That's pretty awesome. [01:22:06] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:22:07] Speaker B: And it came out pre pandemic, Right? Right. [01:22:09] Speaker C: Oh, [01:22:10] Speaker A: yeah. It was [01:22:11] Speaker C: 2015. [01:22:12] Speaker B: It was early on all that. Wow. [01:22:14] Speaker C: It was early. First, like. It was one of the first, like, screen thrillers. [01:22:18] Speaker B: Well, then. What's his name from? Harold Kumar. Made a couple. [01:22:22] Speaker C: Yeah. Searching. [01:22:23] Speaker B: We saw that one. We saw that one. That one was [01:22:25] Speaker C: Searching. I like [01:22:26] Speaker B: that. Then he made another one, but I didn't see [01:22:28] Speaker C: Missing. I never saw that one. But I contest, like, Unfriended is really good, but you have to watch it like in bed, on your computer, like in a dark room, [01:22:43] Speaker A: on the. On the. The sort of lower quality screen. [01:22:46] Speaker C: Yeah. Because then there'll be parts in the movie where you're trying to move the mouse, the arrow, but the movie. And you're like, get them. Get the arrow out of here. But it's. The movie actually has an arrow on the screen, navigating around, so it starts messing with your head a little bit. So. [01:23:08] Speaker A: Nice. That's always fun. That's always fun. Nice. Excellent. Oh, man. I wanna. I wanna watch so many movies, but I always forget that certain movies exist. [01:23:22] Speaker B: Yes, we always forget. But what we don't forget exists is Spawn, which we'll be back to next week. [01:23:27] Speaker A: Yes indeed. Joining us for [01:23:31] Speaker B: our spooky Halloween. Yeah. That's the best way to enjoy all these Halloween movies. Big groups [01:23:46] Speaker A: of [01:23:46] Speaker C: people's at a party. [01:23:47] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely.
