[00:00:00] Speaker A: Moles, trolls, and grassy doles. [00:00:02] Speaker B: Give me a good conspiracy. At this time of the morning, I. [00:00:05] Speaker A: Don'T want to be thinking about burying my relatives in the middle of winter. Good evening, and welcome to the Malbol. This is regarding Spawn, the world's best spawn podcast. [00:00:50] Speaker B: I am your co host, John Fisher. [00:00:53] Speaker C: And I am your co host, David Williams. [00:00:56] Speaker B: And you know, Johnny, it's pretty nice out, I think. [00:01:01] Speaker A: I like good weather. [00:01:04] Speaker B: It's good. [00:01:05] Speaker A: I feel like I'm in the green. I feel like I'm in the green with Nick's and Jim Downey. [00:01:11] Speaker C: I think I'm going to buy myself a sword and then attack the pile of rocks I got out in the backyard and pretend that I'm Simon and it's heap. [00:01:20] Speaker B: Oh, why not? [00:01:21] Speaker C: Yeah, why not? [00:01:23] Speaker A: The neighbors wouldn't call the cops on you or anything? [00:01:25] Speaker C: Oh, definitely not. A 35 year old six foot dude just decked out in armor with a sword, hitting rocks. Now, nothing suspicious about that. [00:01:36] Speaker A: In the middle of Chicago. Yeah, perfect. [00:01:38] Speaker B: Yeah, it'll be fine. [00:01:42] Speaker A: I mean, I walk around, I wear a spawn costume on the bus just to spread the word. [00:01:48] Speaker C: Nobody's giving you weird looks. I mean, as long as you're just sitting there doing nothing. [00:01:52] Speaker B: Nobody's going to. People's going to do anything. [00:01:54] Speaker C: People only stare at you if you're doing weird shit, like. [00:01:59] Speaker B: Eating an apple. And then instead of just eating the. [00:02:03] Speaker C: Skin, you spit the skin back out into your hand every time you take a bite. I saw somebody do that on the train once. [00:02:11] Speaker B: I was like, I don't have a. [00:02:14] Speaker C: Problem with eating on the bus or the train, so long as you aren't disgusting about it. [00:02:21] Speaker B: Don't eat fucking chicken wings. [00:02:23] Speaker C: Don't eat goddamn ribs. And if you're going to put something in your mouth, leave it in there. Don't sunflower seeds. [00:02:30] Speaker B: No. Go. Oh, man. No. Can't do it. [00:02:34] Speaker A: Can't do it. [00:02:35] Speaker B: I cannot abide. [00:02:36] Speaker A: See, that's what I would do in my spawn suit. If someone's eating sunflower seeds, I'd be. [00:02:39] Speaker B: Like, listen, it's time to go to hell, and I kick them off the. [00:02:47] Speaker A: Bus with the issue of king spawn number one in their hands. I'd like stuff in their pocket. You've been spawned by your friendly neighborhood. [00:02:55] Speaker B: Spawn. [00:02:58] Speaker C: So they're going to make the movie about you, and it'll be like that one scene in the original Toby Maguire Spider man, where they're bound up. [00:03:07] Speaker B: And they've got a little note on them. [00:03:10] Speaker A: Exactly. [00:03:10] Speaker C: You'll leave an extra copy of spawn number one on it for the cops when they pick it up. [00:03:16] Speaker A: Yeah, I'll leave them, like, a 30 issue. I'll leave them a salmon twish issue. So, like, somewhere in, like, the. [00:03:22] Speaker B: For them. Yeah. [00:03:23] Speaker A: Or maybe I'll leave them the Billy concave. They love that when a police procedural. [00:03:28] Speaker B: Yeah, that would be good. [00:03:29] Speaker A: Well, welcome, everybody. [00:03:30] Speaker B: Yes. [00:03:31] Speaker A: Welcome to regarding Spawn, where each week we cover two issues from Spawn's universe. One more classic, one more modern. This week, much in the same. That is what we're doing. And first up, our classic. We have Spawn 304 all the way back from January 2019. [00:03:54] Speaker B: January, is that right? [00:03:56] Speaker A: No, it's January 2020. [00:03:58] Speaker C: Yeah, I was about to say my research was January 2020. [00:04:01] Speaker A: Oh, it's a misprint. It says January 2019, but it's January 2020. [00:04:07] Speaker C: I don't know, because that's what the website said, and we learned last time. [00:04:13] Speaker A: No, it's January 2020 because the last one was, like, November 2019. [00:04:17] Speaker B: Okay. [00:04:19] Speaker A: It's just a misprint. They forgot. It's like when you write your first check of the year. Yeah, no, it should be January 2020. They just didn't change the date. [00:04:27] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, man. Oh, well. Yeah. [00:04:31] Speaker A: So January 2020. Oh, yes. Everyone's Covid is in the world. It's great. Things are going awesome. [00:04:37] Speaker C: Yeah, that was right. Remember when everybody was like, 2020 is going to be the year that stuff starts going good. And then fucking Kobe's helicopter went down. [00:04:46] Speaker A: And then the world. [00:04:47] Speaker B: It was just like, what then said. [00:04:49] Speaker A: Second issue today we're covering is Kingspawn 21, a salmon twitch spectacular with brains, dogs, kidnapping. One more controversy. [00:05:01] Speaker B: Action. It's great. With a great cover by Mark Brooks. [00:05:07] Speaker C: It's a great cover for a great book, Johnny. That's coming later in the episode. [00:05:12] Speaker A: That's the second we got to start. [00:05:14] Speaker C: With our original one, Johnny, that spawn. [00:05:16] Speaker A: And to tease it, we do have a very special guest at the end of the episode be joining us. [00:05:22] Speaker B: Yes. [00:05:23] Speaker C: I always forget about the special guests. [00:05:26] Speaker A: I always like to tease them, keep. [00:05:27] Speaker B: Them on their edge of their seat. Oh, man. [00:05:31] Speaker A: Yeah. So first up is Spawn 304, controversially, from January 2020. It is, though. [00:05:38] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:39] Speaker A: Despite what the interior says, 100% is. And you know why it's different in mine and why I read that is because I am reading the physical copy. [00:05:48] Speaker C: Well, I am also reading a physical copy. It's just in the trade paperback. [00:05:52] Speaker B: What? [00:05:54] Speaker C: And then also, it just occurs to me that, remember not too terribly long ago when I took over the instagram to say, there's a spawn humble bundle. I totally forgot to get that. [00:06:08] Speaker B: But if you had gotten that, you. [00:06:11] Speaker C: Would also be able to have the digital version of Spawn 304. [00:06:15] Speaker B: Hopefully you got it. [00:06:16] Speaker C: No, I was going to, but then I just forgot. [00:06:19] Speaker A: The listener. Hopefully they got it. [00:06:21] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Hopefully the listener got it. [00:06:23] Speaker C: I'm such an idiot, Johnny. I should have gotten it. What was I thinking? [00:06:27] Speaker B: I wasn't. Apparently there'll be another. [00:06:29] Speaker A: It'll come back around, I bet. [00:06:31] Speaker B: Yeah, there's a. [00:06:32] Speaker C: There's numerous ways for us to enjoy this spawn 304 today. [00:06:35] Speaker A: And there's numerous covers. I just have the COVID a by Mattina Matina. [00:06:41] Speaker B: Is it a virgin cover, period, or. [00:06:45] Speaker C: Is it just a regular cover? [00:06:46] Speaker A: So this is kind of confusing. He did three covers. [00:06:49] Speaker B: He did a, b, and C. Okay. [00:06:52] Speaker A: So was there like, I have the a cover. I have the regular. A cover by Vetito, which is like. [00:06:57] Speaker B: Spawn flying into the. [00:06:59] Speaker A: Flying at the camera with some bats, some bats across grave. [00:07:05] Speaker B: Yeah. And then there's a b cover also by Mattina where spawn and haunt are on it. Spawn and haunt. I don't have that one in here. No, that's. [00:07:16] Speaker C: The spawn and haunt is the Tod McFarlane cover. [00:07:19] Speaker A: Oh, this is just. Okay, this is just a misprint on cover price. Then we're getting misinformation left and right. I feel like I'm brock the shock fennel over here because I got this. [00:07:27] Speaker C: Trade paperback here that's got both the black and white version and the virgin. [00:07:31] Speaker B: Cover of that version of COVID And it's haunted spawn. [00:07:36] Speaker C: Yes, it's haunted spawn. [00:07:38] Speaker A: Oh, it's just a misprint on here. [00:07:40] Speaker C: Todd McFarlane. And then the colors is done by. Oh, I don't know who that is. [00:07:45] Speaker B: Peter F. Peter S. Okay. It's a pretty dope, pretty dope cover. [00:07:53] Speaker C: And then it's also got the virgin matina in the back here, which is real nice. [00:07:58] Speaker B: This is one of those. [00:07:59] Speaker A: Well, I guess we got to go through the credits. [00:08:01] Speaker B: Whoops. [00:08:01] Speaker A: So the Todd father's writing. This is his run on Spawn, which is very apparent. Reading it, not a dishonor, but this is Todd father. Some of this is Tod, father's most tod fatheriest. [00:08:13] Speaker B: We'll get to it, though. [00:08:15] Speaker A: Art by Jason Shaw Alexander. John Goff, who's currently the editor in chief back in 2020, is also helping. [00:08:22] Speaker B: Out with the plot. Tom Orzachowski, Tom o on lettering and. [00:08:27] Speaker A: Fco placencia on colors. [00:08:30] Speaker B: And we already went over the covers. [00:08:32] Speaker A: And John Goff is editor in chief. [00:08:35] Speaker B: Nice, David, you're going to laugh. What's that? [00:08:39] Speaker A: Guess how long this previously in Spawn, it. [00:08:43] Speaker B: Is it, like the whole page? [00:08:46] Speaker A: No, it's pretty long, though. I'd say it's about an inch long. [00:08:49] Speaker B: Oh, man. Okay. [00:08:52] Speaker A: Taking a sip of my diet Dr. Pepper here. [00:08:55] Speaker B: Hit me with it. [00:08:56] Speaker A: All right, strap in. [00:08:57] Speaker B: Are you ready? [00:08:57] Speaker A: Previously in Spawn. In Hellhunt part two, spawn Al Simmons comes face to face with priest, aka she spawn. Is she friend or foe? Trust no one, is Spawn's first thought. Their dance progresses with cooler heads, finally winning out with the death of Nyx. Brought about by a shocking assailant in the activation of twelve individuals who contain the Spawn force. There are bigger things to worry about, like who is imprisoned in the Vatican, and what are his plans for our heroes? Not quite as bad as last week, but a little long. But it actually flows pretty well. [00:09:44] Speaker B: It's not bad. Not bad. Not bad at all. [00:09:47] Speaker A: It's a pretty good, pretty good. Previously on yeah, between the two extremes they have in here, that's a pretty good middle ground. [00:09:52] Speaker C: Yeah. I would say it averages out to quite nice. [00:09:55] Speaker B: Quite nice. [00:09:55] Speaker A: Previously on yeah, a couple interesting things. [00:09:58] Speaker B: In there I thought was that they call her priest. Yeah, they usually call her Jessica priest. [00:10:05] Speaker A: Just calling her priest. I don't know. It's interesting. [00:10:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:08] Speaker C: Like how they're getting the name of the miniseries in there. In hellhunt part two. [00:10:13] Speaker A: Got to get it in there. [00:10:14] Speaker C: We're in Hellhunt part three. [00:10:15] Speaker B: Johnny. And that opens in the snow. [00:10:21] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:10:22] Speaker A: Because it's winter. [00:10:23] Speaker C: Yeah. And it's South Dakota. Is that where we are? [00:10:28] Speaker A: I believe South Dakota, North Dakota. [00:10:31] Speaker C: West Hope, North Dakota is where we are. [00:10:34] Speaker B: We're in West Hope, North Dakota. And you got Eddie walking down the streets. [00:10:41] Speaker A: Eddie in his human form. [00:10:43] Speaker B: Yeah. Ed Frank. [00:10:45] Speaker A: It says here, but it's Eddie. Frank. It's Eddie. [00:10:48] Speaker B: Yeah. Our redeemer. With a kind of emo haircut going, he's. But he's being hunted by some heaven people. [00:10:58] Speaker C: They're talking to somebody on the other end of their. I guess he has a phone. Yeah, they're talking to somebody on the phone. [00:11:05] Speaker B: And they're being given some orders. [00:11:08] Speaker C: W-R-T. Eddie. But Eddie's just going by. He's looking in the windows, looking at the Christmas cheer. He stops and gazes in wonder at a Christmas tree. [00:11:20] Speaker A: Just a nice little Christmas scene. [00:11:21] Speaker B: And then you turn the page, and. [00:11:25] Speaker C: The voice on the other end of the phone says, by any force necessary. And so these heaven people just open fire on the crowd in front of this Christmas tree. [00:11:35] Speaker A: Pretty awful. [00:11:36] Speaker C: Yeah, it's pretty bad. And then the next page is just. [00:11:39] Speaker B: Like, awful that it's actually believe. [00:11:41] Speaker A: It's not that unbelievable that that would happen. [00:11:43] Speaker B: All right. [00:11:44] Speaker C: Unfortunately. But it's just like the damage. [00:11:50] Speaker B: Yeah. People getting shot, stuff getting shattered. [00:11:58] Speaker A: Santa Claus got shot, an angel got shot, a parent got shot. [00:12:02] Speaker C: Child is wailing. Eddie himself gets shot in the calf and falls right into the snow. [00:12:10] Speaker A: You get a callback to little callback. A side note to issue 300, where he got his new form, just to remind us of that. [00:12:16] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. Which is reaper. [00:12:18] Speaker A: And then this is a great line. That's what I should have done for the opening. Maybe I'll record it at the end. [00:12:22] Speaker B: If we can do it. You know what God does to traders? [00:12:25] Speaker A: He shoots them in the snow like a diseased dog. That's what God does to traders. [00:12:33] Speaker C: Yeah, that's exactly what he does. He's like those Norwegians at the beginning of the thing, trying to get the. [00:12:40] Speaker B: Thing, but they're like, why are you. [00:12:42] Speaker C: Trying to shoot that dog? But no, it's the thing. Spoilers for a movie older than me, that dog at the beginning of the. [00:12:49] Speaker B: Thing is the thing. [00:12:52] Speaker C: I watched that sequel prequel that is the story of the original outpost camp. [00:13:00] Speaker B: Where the thing turns into a dog and runs away. [00:13:07] Speaker C: There's some cool creature work in there. [00:13:09] Speaker B: But overall, well, do you know the story behind that? [00:13:13] Speaker C: There was some practical stuff, but there. [00:13:15] Speaker A: Was some practical, but it was originally, like, all practical. They made all these really cool things, but the studio thought it didn't look good, so they made a. Replace a lot of it with CG, and you can go online and find the makeup and effects test, and they're amazing. [00:13:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:29] Speaker C: Oh, man. [00:13:30] Speaker A: It's worth the time to look up the thing. Remake effects test. It's definitely worth checking out, man. [00:13:36] Speaker C: That would have been better because it. [00:13:37] Speaker B: Wasn'T bad, but I mean, it was kind of thing. [00:13:40] Speaker A: The funny thing that bothered me the most in that movie, and it bothers me in some movies, it's not done well. There was a lot of cg fire, and I could tell. [00:13:48] Speaker B: Yeah, it was just really bad cg. [00:13:50] Speaker A: Fire in the background when the station was on fire. [00:13:53] Speaker C: So you're saying it looked like the hell scenes from spawn, the movie? [00:13:58] Speaker A: A little better, but yes, close. [00:14:00] Speaker C: I think the major problem I had. [00:14:03] Speaker B: With it was the spaceship. Yeah. [00:14:07] Speaker C: Because it got. [00:14:08] Speaker A: I don't even remember that much about it. [00:14:10] Speaker C: It got very alien versus Predator there in the spaceship. Which. Alien versus Predator. A perfectly fine film to see on. [00:14:17] Speaker B: A hot summer day. [00:14:19] Speaker C: It's got just enough story to keep it interesting and then you get to see xenomorphs and predators fucking duke it out. [00:14:27] Speaker A: I'm a Paul W. S. Anderson fan. I like his movies. [00:14:31] Speaker C: But for something in that thing universe, I guess there's now a thing universe. It was much too explanatory. [00:14:45] Speaker B: That's part of the creepiness of that. [00:14:48] Speaker C: Universe is that you don't really know. Like, you only know just enough to not die this second. And then you very quickly learn that you need to know more. There was just too much knowing. But that's neither here nor there, because. [00:15:05] Speaker B: We are in the secret hideout with. [00:15:10] Speaker C: Al and Jessica and Mark in front of the wall of monitors that Mark sits in front of all day. [00:15:16] Speaker B: And in front of us is Jessica's dice bum. [00:15:22] Speaker C: You would notice that, wouldn't. [00:15:25] Speaker B: Of course. [00:15:26] Speaker A: Of course. You know, I'm a Jessica, Stan. I'm a Jessica simp. [00:15:29] Speaker C: Yeah. And her hair is just doing what Jessica's hair. Always. [00:15:35] Speaker B: Love the. [00:15:35] Speaker A: I love the Jason Sean Alexander, how he draws it. Like, come out like a mohawk. [00:15:39] Speaker C: Yeah, it's super awesome. And they're arguing about the small slivers of symbiote that Al Simmons left behind. [00:15:47] Speaker B: And. [00:15:49] Speaker C: How that's probably what got Nick's killed, is her having it in there. And so Al and Jessica are just having it out. And Mark's like, can I suggest something? And they're both. [00:16:02] Speaker A: No, no. They both turn with glowing eyes and say no. Like a married couple fighting. [00:16:10] Speaker C: It's great. It's funnier than it should be because it shouldn't be funny. [00:16:15] Speaker A: And Al reveals he was trying to draw these people out to come kill him, not Nick's. [00:16:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:20] Speaker A: So that was sort of his plan went awry a little bit. [00:16:23] Speaker B: Yeah. And there was a. [00:16:24] Speaker C: You were going to kill yourself. No, I tried that before. It didn't work. That reminds me a lot of in that Rick reminder, Punisher, that I let you borrow the Frank Castle gets destroyed by Dawkin, who is Wolverine's son. Under the influence of Norman Osborne, he just gets ripped to pieces, and then he becomes Frankensteined into Frankencastle, which is. Frankencastle is the best Punisher story. [00:16:58] Speaker B: Don't at me. [00:17:00] Speaker C: He goes down to the monster city below New York City and protects the monsters from outside terrorists. [00:17:08] Speaker B: And he's a Frankenstein. It's awesome. Pretty cool. [00:17:12] Speaker C: But anyway, at one point, Norman Osborne sees him again, and he's like, but we killed you. And he's like, it didn't take. And that's kind of what happened here with Al, is it didn't take. [00:17:22] Speaker B: Didn't take. They spat me back out. [00:17:26] Speaker A: It shows him ripping off clown's head. [00:17:28] Speaker C: And then the big kaboom in Albania. The Albert Albanian incident. [00:17:36] Speaker B: The Albert albanian inciting incident. [00:17:39] Speaker C: Yes. And it was supposed to kill all. [00:17:42] Speaker B: Of the, you know, it didn't. Somehow I wasn't aware that that was. [00:17:50] Speaker C: Supposed to kill all of the hell peeps. Johnny, was that something I missed maybe in those? [00:17:56] Speaker B: No. [00:17:57] Speaker A: I think this is kind of a reveal. We knew he had to get them there at the same time. We didn't really know. [00:18:03] Speaker B: Stay. [00:18:03] Speaker A: So, I mean, this is kind of a classic tod father. [00:18:05] Speaker B: Like, kind of do something, give a. [00:18:07] Speaker A: Lot of context later. [00:18:09] Speaker C: Yeah, he does that a lot. Just do it. [00:18:13] Speaker B: We'll figure it out later. Just do it. [00:18:15] Speaker C: He's taken the epithet, make it work to heart. [00:18:20] Speaker A: I mean, that's kind of what this whole issue is. Or this part of this issue is. [00:18:22] Speaker B: Just like tying all these loose ends. [00:18:25] Speaker A: Together of kind of these mysterious. [00:18:27] Speaker B: Why was Al talking the media. [00:18:29] Speaker A: Why was Al doing this? And just like, kind of tying all these loose ends together a little bit. Because she spawns there and she's like, look, we got to figure this shit. [00:18:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:18:37] Speaker C: And they mentioned that the spawn forces are multiplying. So that means somewhere up on that board, Johnny Gumshoe Spawn is indicated, I know, by a little red dot. [00:18:48] Speaker A: He's still alive out there. It's not before he gets blown away. [00:18:51] Speaker C: He's still kicking around. [00:18:52] Speaker B: Before he gets assassinated. [00:18:54] Speaker A: Right. He gets shot. [00:18:55] Speaker C: He gets collected by whatever group that was, that was collecting all of them. [00:19:00] Speaker B: To do experiments on. [00:19:02] Speaker C: Oh, that means revolutionary war spawn is out there too. Oh, boy. [00:19:06] Speaker A: T Rex spawn. [00:19:07] Speaker C: T Rex Spawn. And there's one up in North Dakota that's sending the same chord energy reading as the dead zone in New York. So there's some business happening up in. [00:19:20] Speaker B: Which, you know, we just learned about gotta be, Eddie. Gotta be. [00:19:26] Speaker C: And then we get a good pundits page. I've said it before. I really love Jason, Sean Alexander's pundits, because look at this. The crn lady is just horrified. [00:19:39] Speaker B: It's good. [00:19:40] Speaker A: Yeah, they're talking about the shooting at the Christmas tree. All of them. [00:19:42] Speaker C: The info now. Guy is just like, he's chewing his fingernails. He's like, the fuck is. [00:19:51] Speaker B: Even, even. [00:19:52] Speaker C: Old Brock, the shock is toned down and was like, what the hell is going on? [00:19:57] Speaker A: On strategy for life is the name of his program. [00:20:01] Speaker B: DNG. [00:20:02] Speaker C: And eight. [00:20:04] Speaker A: Definitely public access. [00:20:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:20:07] Speaker C: Strategy number four, life. Yeah, it's a good pundit page. [00:20:11] Speaker B: Good pundit page. [00:20:12] Speaker C: And then Mark is watching the news about North Dakota. And he was like, you said they were trying to hide from the public. And Al's like, I don't know. I guess these guys are bad. [00:20:26] Speaker A: They're another breed, some different kind of guys. [00:20:28] Speaker C: And then we get the John wick. [00:20:34] Speaker B: Gun room in the hotel constellation. [00:20:38] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:20:38] Speaker B: Or what's that? [00:20:40] Speaker A: It is called the continental. [00:20:42] Speaker B: Continental. And they got Jessica Priest coming with. [00:20:49] Speaker C: Them and is grabbing some guns herself. [00:20:51] Speaker B: Then we get a snowy power meter. Yeah. [00:20:54] Speaker C: Oh, man, he's at one, too. [00:20:57] Speaker B: That's a woof. [00:20:59] Speaker A: Pretty low. Pretty low. [00:21:01] Speaker B: Yeah, that's where he's going to get all those guns. [00:21:03] Speaker C: Five higher than last time we saw him, but still. [00:21:07] Speaker B: That's good. [00:21:08] Speaker C: And then we go on over to Vatican City, which is half a world away. We got those guys from last time talking in yet another room with a monitor wall. [00:21:22] Speaker A: This one has blue dots on it. [00:21:24] Speaker C: Yeah, very interesting. They're also tracking the same explosion of. [00:21:28] Speaker B: Spawn forces that Mark and M are all doing. [00:21:33] Speaker C: But they are more hesitant to say that they are specifically sort of necroplasmic powered individuals. [00:21:43] Speaker B: And they're just right. [00:21:45] Speaker A: They're just hunting them all. [00:21:46] Speaker C: They're just hunting them all. And they want to do a little bit more. [00:21:50] Speaker B: A little bit more hunting. [00:21:52] Speaker A: It's time to release their hunter. [00:21:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Because, Johnny, it's a hunter's moony. [00:22:02] Speaker A: I thought they're going to show the spawn hunter's collection. I thought it was going to. [00:22:07] Speaker C: Say these are what's making the spawn force pings. We got all these iterations. [00:22:15] Speaker A: He has too much swan power in one place. [00:22:17] Speaker B: Oh, man. [00:22:18] Speaker C: Could you imagine if he would be the most powerful? Sin would come after him and be like, I need all your necroplasm. [00:22:25] Speaker B: And then there'd be all your stuff. [00:22:27] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:22:27] Speaker C: There'd be a massive showdown between the spawn hunter and sin. [00:22:30] Speaker B: And. [00:22:34] Speaker C: I'm going to put my money on the spawn hunter for that one. Sin can go suck. [00:22:38] Speaker A: Spawn hunter would kick Sin's ass. [00:22:40] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:22:41] Speaker C: Just because following up behind him, he'd get Spawn Safari's assist. And there's no way sin could take on both of those guys at the same time. [00:22:52] Speaker B: No, sin's a baby. So they go down. [00:22:55] Speaker A: This cardinal comes down. Or is that the pope? [00:22:57] Speaker C: I think that's supposed to be the pope. [00:22:59] Speaker B: It's the pope. Yeah. [00:23:01] Speaker A: The pope sends out fucking medieval to get Eddie. [00:23:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Turns off the light. [00:23:08] Speaker C: He turns on the dark. [00:23:09] Speaker A: Johnny, spider man, turn off the dark. [00:23:11] Speaker C: He hires Bono and the edge to write some music. [00:23:19] Speaker B: For Julie. [00:23:20] Speaker A: Tamor, there's some great clips of that online. I'll tell you what. [00:23:26] Speaker C: I'm in that series of doughboys where they reference the sinister six song, like, every week. It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. [00:23:37] Speaker A: That's the song I was thinking of. [00:23:38] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:23:38] Speaker A: Look up sinister six, spider man. Turn off the dark if you want a hoot. [00:23:42] Speaker C: You know who's not having a hoot of a time? Is Eddie here? He's running through the snow. And sneakers. [00:23:49] Speaker B: I know. [00:23:50] Speaker A: No jacket. [00:23:51] Speaker C: It's probably not a very common thing for a lot of people. But there is a specific cold that is walking through the snow in sneakers, because you don't have snowshoes. [00:24:01] Speaker B: And it sucks. Oh, yeah. [00:24:03] Speaker C: It sucks so bad. [00:24:05] Speaker B: Oh, man. [00:24:06] Speaker C: Because those things just, like, soak up the water immediately. And then it's just, there's the overlay of the words. Is the pope still talking to medieval? And he says that we need to find out who these new intruders are. [00:24:20] Speaker B: Who do they work for? Satan? God spawn? [00:24:24] Speaker C: Or are they traitors loyal only to themselves? And then crashing down from the North Dakota sky into the alleyway where Eddie. [00:24:31] Speaker B: Is running is medieval himself looking badass. [00:24:36] Speaker C: And he's the badass to end all badasses because he's motherfucking medieval spawn. [00:24:44] Speaker B: Johnny, your soul child, it's time you laid it bare. [00:24:52] Speaker A: And we get a chapter two on. [00:24:53] Speaker B: This one, the miracle. [00:24:56] Speaker C: And this is a little bit of some epistolary. [00:25:01] Speaker B: Todd. Father. Yeah. [00:25:05] Speaker A: At his wordiest. [00:25:06] Speaker C: At his wordiest, man. It's just a series of, I guess it's just a single journal entry from Mark Rosen into his. [00:25:19] Speaker B: Know, documenting his. [00:25:21] Speaker C: Concerns with the spread of these spawn force things. [00:25:25] Speaker B: And then he discovers one of them is Jim Downing, apparently, or he thinks. [00:25:33] Speaker C: Yeah, because there's a picture he was able to capture. And he's like, Jim. Jim, my old friend Jim. [00:25:40] Speaker B: He's alive. [00:25:41] Speaker A: Jim. [00:25:41] Speaker C: And then, so he's buoyed by the fact that his friend's. Jim is still alive and that he could, since he's so worried about how Al has been acting, he's like, if I can get in contact with Jim, I can figure out how best to do this so that way spawn doesn't just ruin everything. We love Mark Rosen. [00:26:05] Speaker B: He's such a good boy. [00:26:06] Speaker C: He chooses right eventually. But right now, he's questioning, yeah, I. [00:26:11] Speaker A: Was like, mark, you're being a dick. [00:26:13] Speaker C: Yeah, his heart's in the right place because he doesn't want Al to fuck everything up. [00:26:18] Speaker A: But I guess we're seeing the seeds of why he's on. Because I always wondered kind of why he was on Jim's team in that parts and the scores. [00:26:24] Speaker C: And since it's not known how much of a cad Jim Downing is right now, like, Jim Downing's literally now just what, a resurrected from his resurrected former spawn. [00:26:39] Speaker A: I mean, he was spawned for a few years. [00:26:40] Speaker B: Yeah. So he was. [00:26:42] Speaker C: At this point, we can still think of him as a good guy. And so that's what Mark is hoping, you know, we know he's been get. [00:26:50] Speaker A: Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's just like a big wordy text thing. [00:26:53] Speaker B: Yeah, it's got some good. Great. Sean Jason. Sean Alexander, Art. [00:26:59] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. I love his mark sitting there looking around. [00:27:02] Speaker B: Yeah, good stuff. [00:27:03] Speaker C: And then that's where mine ends because I don't got any spawning grounds or anything. [00:27:06] Speaker B: You got some spawning grounds for us, Johnny? John. [00:27:09] Speaker A: Oh, my God. Does Johnny have some spawning grounds for you? Nice. We got welcome addition to the Spawn family to Jason and Denora. Looks like Jason Sean Alexander had a baby. Aiden Douglas Aurelio Alexander. [00:27:23] Speaker B: Nice. [00:27:24] Speaker A: So that's awesome. A big picture of happy dad with. [00:27:27] Speaker B: A baby at work. [00:27:28] Speaker C: Every time they send one of those out, everybody always thinks it's a good idea to reply all. And so there's always just like a day's worth of emails that is nothing but congratulations. Yay, congratulations. Yay, congratulations. [00:27:44] Speaker B: That's funny. [00:27:46] Speaker C: Congratulations to all these people who are having children. However, you don't have to reply all to the email. [00:27:53] Speaker A: So it says happy new year. This is in the spawning grounds from John Goff, editor in chief. [00:27:58] Speaker B: Nice. [00:27:59] Speaker A: It gives a little sneak peek of. So this also just proves it is January 2020. So it says to kickstart 2020. [00:28:05] Speaker C: Nice. [00:28:06] Speaker A: It's got a sneak peek of Philip Tan's conceptual artwork for his upcoming art in 306 to 308. [00:28:11] Speaker C: Nice. That is mostly covered by this trade. [00:28:16] Speaker B: Paperback that I have here. And is he the artist on that or the writer? Artist. Oh, nice. [00:28:22] Speaker A: So we got to switch up the artist here. [00:28:24] Speaker B: So he's coming. [00:28:25] Speaker A: John says the future is coming. [00:28:26] Speaker B: And it has a little preview for the next issue. [00:28:30] Speaker A: Hell hunt, part four. [00:28:31] Speaker B: Hell yeah. [00:28:32] Speaker A: And as it says, there's a five page bonus comment drawn by Todd McFarlane. [00:28:36] Speaker B: Ooh, nice. So that's pretty cool. Yeah. [00:28:40] Speaker A: Then you get ads for all the spawn trade paperbacks. Dark horror, enemy of the state, spawn kills everyone. And then a preview for or not a preview, but just a ad for Philadelphia issue two. So this is right in the early run of Philadelphia. Probably why Jason Sean Alexander takes his leave, I imagine. [00:28:59] Speaker B: Perhaps. Perhaps. [00:29:03] Speaker A: And that's Spawn 304, the whole shebang. [00:29:05] Speaker C: Hell, yeah. [00:29:09] Speaker B: You. [00:29:27] Speaker A: Next up, the boys are back in town. [00:29:30] Speaker B: That's right. [00:29:32] Speaker A: That's because it's a salmon twitch issue of King Spawn. King spawn number 21. All the way back in the far off land of April 2023. So just a few months ago. [00:29:43] Speaker C: It's also applicable because the boys in Sean Lewis and Javi Fernandez are back in town. [00:29:50] Speaker A: That's true. They are. And they're killing it. [00:29:52] Speaker C: So not only are the boys back in town, but the boys are back in town. So the boys and the boys are back in town. [00:29:58] Speaker A: I really loved Sam's facial expressions in this from Javi Fernandez. Like, the close ups, they were really good. [00:30:03] Speaker B: Yeah, it's phenomenal. [00:30:06] Speaker A: It's fun to see that from him because usually deals with, like I said before, he deals with the cosmic stuff a lot, but it's cool to see this intimate, little more intimate story. [00:30:13] Speaker C: Yeah, his intimate is also very. Is there anything that Javi Fernandez can't do, Johnny? Because he is just knocking it out. [00:30:21] Speaker B: Of the park every time. [00:30:22] Speaker A: I feel like if we say, like. [00:30:23] Speaker B: Speed and action for Bret Booth, I. [00:30:27] Speaker A: Feel like Javi Fernandez has, like, power. Like, power behind his images. [00:30:32] Speaker C: Javi can do that speed in action too, because remember the. No, he can opening that we had last time. [00:30:38] Speaker A: But I'm saying, just in general, I feel like, yeah, there's just a power to his weight, to his images. Yeah, probably because he uses physical stuff sometimes. [00:30:49] Speaker C: Yeah. Like, bret Booth fills the world with. He just fills the world with stuff. And Javi doesn't fill the world with as much stuff. Like, you can't read the brand name on the chips in the background. You can't see the peanuts being spilled from the table in the bar fight. [00:31:10] Speaker B: But what world is there? Just feels so lived in, right? Yeah. [00:31:20] Speaker A: So real. [00:31:21] Speaker B: It's so good. The COVID here. [00:31:24] Speaker A: Got a couple of covers is badass. We got a couple of covers, but I've got the Mark Brooks cover, which is the featured artist for April of 2023. [00:31:33] Speaker B: And it's this big connecting cover. [00:31:37] Speaker C: I also have the Mark Brooks, and it's awesome. I was just able to say Mark Brooks, but every time I tried to do a fucking Instagram reel, talking about anything with. [00:31:49] Speaker B: I couldn't. [00:31:49] Speaker C: I could only say Marks Brooks, and. [00:31:52] Speaker B: I don't know why, but now I have no trouble. But Mark Brooks. Great cover. [00:32:00] Speaker C: Great cover. There's Attila the Hun there. [00:32:05] Speaker A: There's spawn, or there's not spawn clown. [00:32:09] Speaker B: Oh, my God, I call clown Spawn. I mean, that's what he wants. There's an overt kill. There's the boys. [00:32:16] Speaker C: There's wanda and a little dove. There's a shroudy dude in the back. There's Mandarin Spawn. There's. [00:32:24] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:32:25] Speaker C: There's Tim Curry from Legend. All these people that I'm sure I should know that I don't know. I'm just going to give them names. [00:32:33] Speaker A: There's a lot of spawn characters that looks like some kind of russian spawn. [00:32:36] Speaker B: Or something. [00:32:39] Speaker C: Or, like mongolian spawn. [00:32:41] Speaker A: He looks like Mongolian Spawn, Johnny. [00:32:43] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:44] Speaker A: Genghis Khan. That's what I was thinking. [00:32:45] Speaker C: I was going to say Genghis spawn, but you. [00:32:48] Speaker A: Oh, Genghis spawn. [00:32:52] Speaker B: There's the beginning of Soul Crusher's hood up there. Yep. Oh, yeah. [00:33:00] Speaker A: You can see just a little bit, actually. It's either soul crusher or the curse. [00:33:04] Speaker C: I'm more inclined to say soul crusher. [00:33:06] Speaker B: Because I think it is because I like soul Crusher. [00:33:08] Speaker A: Well, if I wasn't trapped in my closet, I could pull out the other. [00:33:11] Speaker B: Issue and look, but, oh, man, don't. [00:33:14] Speaker A: Here we find ourselves. [00:33:15] Speaker C: You can't invoke that name anymore, johnny. It's illegal. [00:33:17] Speaker B: I know r. Kelly. [00:33:19] Speaker C: So, fun story. I used to work with a guy whose brother was a realtor, and many years ago foreclosed on r. Kelly's music studio for reasons of didn't pay. [00:33:40] Speaker B: Well. Long story short, my old coworker got. [00:33:45] Speaker C: A desk chair, like, a $2,000 desk chair from r. Kelly's old recording studio and still uses it in his home, where his children also live. [00:33:58] Speaker B: I have no idea why he feels. [00:34:00] Speaker C: Comfortable with R. Kelly's old desk chair, but he's like, hey, whatever, dude. [00:34:10] Speaker B: Interesting. [00:34:11] Speaker C: We could not talk him out of getting rid of it. [00:34:14] Speaker B: We were like, dude, what do you. [00:34:16] Speaker A: Get rid of it? [00:34:17] Speaker C: And he's like, it's a fucking good chair. [00:34:19] Speaker A: We're like, dude, no, you can't have that. [00:34:23] Speaker B: That's illegal. And he's like, it's a chair. [00:34:28] Speaker C: No, it's not the point. [00:34:31] Speaker B: Oh, man, that's hilarious. [00:34:33] Speaker C: He still has that chair, by the way. I asked him. [00:34:37] Speaker A: It's cursed or haunted or something. [00:34:39] Speaker C: As recently as at least, if not the most recent trial. Trial before the most recent trial? Like, when the verdict was handed down. [00:34:51] Speaker B: Most recently? Yeah. [00:34:53] Speaker C: Oh, man. [00:34:54] Speaker B: What a shit show. [00:34:55] Speaker C: What's not a shit show, Johnny, is Sean Lewis and Tod McFarlane sharing script, plot, and additional script duties on this book here. [00:35:04] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:35:04] Speaker C: Oh, I guess we accidentally steamroll it over the Jonathan glampion cover. [00:35:10] Speaker A: Oh, the b cover, which is awesome. [00:35:11] Speaker B: I have it here. It's spawn, like, all kind of smoky. [00:35:16] Speaker A: And inky, and he has a little crown over his head. It's awesome. Red. [00:35:19] Speaker B: Really stark red. It's nice. [00:35:21] Speaker A: It's pretty cool. [00:35:23] Speaker C: Three colors, white, red, and black. [00:35:25] Speaker A: They just did a vader called, like, red, white, and black or something. [00:35:28] Speaker B: I guess Marvel does that occasionally. [00:35:31] Speaker C: DC kind of does that too, where they do black and white versions, where they've got, like, it's an anthology of one character, and everything is done in black and white. [00:35:40] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what it is for Marvel. They're doing it for Vader. And it's called. [00:35:45] Speaker B: I think it's red, black, and white or white red. I can't remember, man. Darth Vader, great villain. [00:35:53] Speaker A: Oh, my God. [00:35:54] Speaker C: Hot take, I'm pretty sure, but great fucking, dude. [00:35:57] Speaker A: In that Jedi survivor game, at one. [00:35:59] Speaker B: Point, you have to fight Darth Vader. Obviously, don't kill him, but he is so big. [00:36:04] Speaker A: You don't think about how big he must be in tall, and it's terrifying, man. [00:36:09] Speaker C: Those fights between Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader in the kenobi show. [00:36:15] Speaker B: Oh, those are great shit, dude. [00:36:19] Speaker C: Massive. [00:36:20] Speaker B: They are massive. [00:36:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:36:23] Speaker B: When he's, like, got his helmet half. [00:36:25] Speaker A: Blasted off too, and is, like, screaming at him. It's so good. [00:36:28] Speaker B: Speaking of massive, Javier Fernandez, absolutely. Massively talented. Massive. [00:36:36] Speaker C: We got FCo placentia and Sheila Saldanya on colors and world design on lettering. [00:36:44] Speaker B: So, yeah, I think. [00:36:46] Speaker C: And world works with Sean Lewis. [00:36:48] Speaker B: Must be it. [00:36:49] Speaker C: We covered the covers. We got creative director Tod McFarlane, editor in chief, Hams enjoyer himself. [00:36:56] Speaker B: Tom Healy loves the hams. [00:36:59] Speaker C: Thomas Healy. If you're ever in Chicago, hit us up. [00:37:02] Speaker B: We'll get some. [00:37:07] Speaker A: Chicago handshake. [00:37:08] Speaker C: We can go over to. What, the California flyer? Is that what it is? [00:37:12] Speaker B: The one that just opened? [00:37:15] Speaker C: I think it's over on Milwaukee somewhere. It was my old manager's favorite dive bar, but then it closed, like, right before COVID But somebody recently bought it and reopened it. [00:37:25] Speaker B: And he was so pumped. California clipper. [00:37:29] Speaker C: Clipper. [00:37:29] Speaker B: That's it. California Clipper. Yeah. That place is awesome, man. [00:37:33] Speaker C: That just makes me miss the mutiny so much. I feared for my. I feared for my life in the mutiny just because I thought that drop ceiling was literally going to drop on me. [00:37:44] Speaker A: There's always some random band from the suburbs playing. [00:37:47] Speaker B: Oh, man, I saw a band there. [00:37:48] Speaker A: One time called Death Lahem. [00:37:50] Speaker C: That's a great name. [00:37:52] Speaker B: That's a great name. [00:37:53] Speaker A: They're all dressed up kind of like guar. I mean, that was extensive, but they. [00:37:56] Speaker B: Had, like, armor on. [00:37:57] Speaker C: That was a great fucking bar. [00:38:00] Speaker B: Yeah, I know. Yep. Sad. Rip lost the time. Rip mutiny. [00:38:07] Speaker C: All that's left of it is our memories. [00:38:10] Speaker A: So previously in King Spawn, while following their leads on the Exodus foundation, the sudden appearance of Terry's daughter Cyan threatens to derail the investigation. [00:38:23] Speaker B: Interesting. [00:38:24] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what we covered a few episodes ago. Cyan's with Bateman, Maravel, and tar. Maravel. And Spawn is poking around. When we open, he's poking around the exodus foundation in their basement. [00:38:36] Speaker C: This is a great opening shot. It's just big right foot and then a hallway of nothing but drawers on drawers on drawers on drawers. It's a lot like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. [00:38:50] Speaker A: But full of brains, David. [00:38:52] Speaker C: Yeah, full of brains. [00:38:53] Speaker A: And we cut to kind of intercutting. [00:38:55] Speaker B: Here with the domestic scene, where basically. [00:38:58] Speaker A: Cyan and Terry are just screaming it. [00:39:00] Speaker B: Out at each other. [00:39:01] Speaker C: And then back to the warehouse, where Spawn is just floating, all capes and chains, down the aisles of brains. It's like a library, only it's brains. [00:39:13] Speaker A: Yeah. Before it transitions, there's a call out. [00:39:16] Speaker B: Here to spawn 267 through 269, where. [00:39:20] Speaker A: I guess Cyan is in some kind of rehab from Terry. [00:39:23] Speaker B: That doesn't help her. Yeah, it'll be interesting for us to get to. Yeah, I know. Yeah. [00:39:29] Speaker C: Spawn stops, opens a drawer. There's just a brain sitting in it. Doctors, professors, scientists. While he's looking at this brain and this drawer, he opens, a couple of. [00:39:39] Speaker B: Guard dogs show up. [00:39:40] Speaker A: Yeah, some, like, real mean junkyard. [00:39:43] Speaker B: Then, you know. Johnny, did you know that Al Simmons. [00:39:48] Speaker C: Was in the military? [00:39:49] Speaker B: Al Simmons. [00:39:50] Speaker A: I can see it. [00:39:51] Speaker B: All right. [00:39:51] Speaker C: Well, apparently Al Simmons, a former military man, understands how training works. [00:39:58] Speaker A: Al Simmons, military so I can see it. [00:40:00] Speaker C: He doesn't want to harm these dogs. They're just doing a job they were trained for. [00:40:04] Speaker B: And, well, he just happens to have. [00:40:07] Speaker C: A very good distraction technique, which is dogs will eat whatever the fuck you throw at them. He just tosses some brains to distract. [00:40:16] Speaker A: This is hilarious. I love this bit. Like, he just starts throwing these brains. [00:40:19] Speaker C: Out to distract these dogs as it goes. You can see all of these drawers opened that. It's like he's just opening. He's just, like, keeping them fed so they don't bother. [00:40:29] Speaker A: Keep giving them brains. Some smart dogs. [00:40:34] Speaker B: Oh, man. [00:40:35] Speaker A: They've been injected with literal brain food. [00:40:37] Speaker B: They've been injected with some kind of chemical, though, so they remain fresh. [00:40:45] Speaker C: I don't know if you know this, Johnny, but shortly after flesh dies, it gets not too good. [00:40:52] Speaker B: So they've done something to these brains. [00:40:54] Speaker C: To keep them nice and gooey. [00:40:56] Speaker B: Yeah, some kind of chemical. Yeah. [00:40:59] Speaker C: And then we cut back to that hotel room where we're outside the hotel. [00:41:04] Speaker B: Room where Terry and Cyan are going at it. And we got our boys hearing sounds of a struggle. [00:41:12] Speaker C: Sam says, I'm going in. Twitch says, we don't have a warrant. And Sam says, don't start that bullshit again. And then we get the coldest look from twitch. [00:41:21] Speaker B: I know. [00:41:21] Speaker C: He's like, oh, and I wonder, johnny, if there's a little trouble brewing in paradise between our boys here. [00:41:30] Speaker B: There might be, because that's not. Oh, man, it makes me sad. [00:41:37] Speaker C: But I'm very interested in knowing what happens. [00:41:39] Speaker A: Orkids be setting up twitch. To have regret that Sam gets kidnapped and all that. [00:41:44] Speaker B: Yeah. Interesting. That's a good one. Yeah, we'll see. He's like, I'm sorry. [00:41:50] Speaker A: We were fighting. They kiss and hug. [00:41:53] Speaker C: They walk in on Cyan, like, magically floating Terry against the ceiling. [00:41:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:41:59] Speaker A: So Cyan has powers, which I haven't got to that part yet. I mean, I knew that, but we haven't read that, so I don't know what the extent of her powers are. [00:42:07] Speaker B: Yeah, we'll get there one day. [00:42:10] Speaker C: Yeah, we sure will. [00:42:11] Speaker B: And then we get with you fellow listeners, faithful listeners. [00:42:16] Speaker C: We get something that I'm pretty sure Sam never thought he'd say, but, cyan, please put your father down. [00:42:24] Speaker A: Yeah, I need to show you some photos. You just put down your dad? [00:42:28] Speaker C: Yeah, and it takes another 10 seconds for her to say, johnny. [00:42:32] Speaker B: She just leaves him up there. Lets him sweat a little bit, literally. [00:42:37] Speaker C: I like how everybody's in shadow here in this last panel. Except for Twitch's mustache, glasses, and hair. [00:42:45] Speaker B: Yeah, it's great. And then know Sam's showing her the pictures of the victims. [00:42:54] Speaker C: So, like, the people who have had their brains removed and stuff that they've been tracking down. And then Sam and Twitch leave, and. [00:43:01] Speaker B: Then they split up. [00:43:02] Speaker C: I don't know where Twitch goes, but Sam's goes to a cafe. It says bar on the door there. [00:43:09] Speaker B: Like, just a little bit. [00:43:11] Speaker C: And so you think he's having himself. [00:43:15] Speaker B: A little tipple to take the. [00:43:19] Speaker A: He's just having little. A coffee. [00:43:21] Speaker C: No, we learn as he leaves that coffee sucks. [00:43:24] Speaker B: So apparently trying to be better about his health. [00:43:31] Speaker C: And is drinking coffee instead of beer. But while he does that, somebody surreptitiously takes a picture of him that he doesn't notice. [00:43:41] Speaker A: He's not trying to be too good about himself. He's going to have to smoke a cigarette. [00:43:45] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true. [00:43:47] Speaker C: We got a great little alley scene here. With the fire escapes and the trash bins that are just overrun. [00:43:54] Speaker B: And this lady walks up to him. [00:43:57] Speaker C: And is like, you're Sam Tar. [00:43:59] Speaker B: And he's like, who the fuck are you? [00:44:01] Speaker C: She's like, I just wanted to show you a picture. It's a picture of you. [00:44:05] Speaker A: And he's got his head, like, bisected. Like they're going to do surgery on it. [00:44:11] Speaker C: Yeah. Where they would cut. It's got the little bloody cleaver. [00:44:16] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:44:17] Speaker C: Then he yells at her, says, you're scum. You and your entire corporation. [00:44:21] Speaker B: And she taunts him by, keep talking. [00:44:25] Speaker A: You're making me hot. [00:44:26] Speaker C: Yeah. She's distracting him from Bateman Maryville, who sneaks up behind him and puts him in a chokehold. [00:44:33] Speaker A: Yeah, this is the great, like, sam facial work here. [00:44:36] Speaker C: The struggle. [00:44:36] Speaker A: I love this. [00:44:37] Speaker C: Yeah, it's real good. I like that. The automatopea of the needle going into Sam's neck is. [00:44:46] Speaker B: You know, Sam passes. [00:44:48] Speaker C: Out because they shot him with a sedative. [00:44:51] Speaker A: With some kind of. Yeah, yeah. And then this poor bus boy comes out of the restaurant. [00:44:56] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:44:56] Speaker A: Well, the reason they're kidnapping him, you kind of get a hint of. Is they want what he knows about spawn. [00:45:01] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:45:02] Speaker A: And that's why they're taking him to take his brain. But this poor bus boy comes out of the back of the restaurant, fucking head blown off. [00:45:08] Speaker C: I don't know if he's a bus boy or. Because in the background, that looks like a very fancy bar. That's different from the cafe. [00:45:14] Speaker A: Oh, it's a different. [00:45:15] Speaker C: He was just in. He looks like he might be the bartender. [00:45:19] Speaker A: Or he might be his ventriloquist dummy. Kind of looks like one. [00:45:24] Speaker B: And man just. [00:45:31] Speaker C: Shot right in the head. And he's got goop all over the place. And the trash goes flying. [00:45:36] Speaker B: Oh, man, it's rough. It's rough being that guy. [00:45:40] Speaker A: And they're pissed off at Sam. He's threatening with a knife. Because they interfered with them getting cyan. [00:45:45] Speaker B: So really realizes that, okay, they were. [00:45:48] Speaker A: Courting Cyan to try to get her brain. [00:45:50] Speaker C: Sam's just in the background, just like, both eyes focused right on the blade. [00:45:54] Speaker A: Like, yeah. [00:45:55] Speaker B: He's like, yeah. [00:45:58] Speaker A: And they're sibling bickering. Like, calling, you know, just like, yeah. Bickering at each. [00:46:04] Speaker C: She's she's like, it's not going to do us any good if you start cutting them now. And Bateman's obviously very upset that she basically, basically gave Sam the comfort he needs to know that he's safe, at least until they get to their destination. And then Sam takes the one chance that he knows he has, and he. [00:46:25] Speaker B: Pushes Bateman out of the way and. [00:46:28] Speaker C: Clasps his hands over her eyes. I don't remember her name. What was her name? [00:46:34] Speaker B: Johnny Tar. [00:46:35] Speaker C: Tar. [00:46:36] Speaker B: Okay. Tar Maravel. [00:46:38] Speaker A: Isn't tar like some. Didn't there a movie called Tar? [00:46:41] Speaker C: I think there is. [00:46:43] Speaker B: It's about some composer. [00:46:44] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:46:45] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:46:48] Speaker A: It'S like a bad composer. Canceled composer. [00:46:51] Speaker B: Oh. [00:46:51] Speaker C: It's got what's her face in it. The Galadriel. [00:46:53] Speaker A: Tilda Swinton's in it. [00:46:54] Speaker C: Tilda Swinton. Oh, no. That's who I was thinking. [00:46:56] Speaker A: Kate Blanchett's in it. [00:46:57] Speaker B: Yeah, it's one of those two. It's supposed to be real great. Supposed to be real great. [00:47:01] Speaker A: Yeah, I got nominated for some oscars. [00:47:04] Speaker B: Tar. Maravel. Tar. Then she slams on the brakes, and. [00:47:09] Speaker C: Then Sam and Bateman start. [00:47:12] Speaker B: Bateman? Yeah, Bateman start fighting in the back. [00:47:16] Speaker A: You have such trouble with Bateman. [00:47:17] Speaker C: I know. I don't get it. [00:47:19] Speaker A: He's obviously named after Patrick Bateman. [00:47:21] Speaker B: Come on, man. [00:47:22] Speaker C: They start fighting in the backseat again, and the tar's life just turns around, and it's like, boys quit. The garage door that they slammed their brakes in front of is obviously at the Exodus foundation. [00:47:33] Speaker B: And then it opens, and then it is revealed. Spawn with visible, brain wielding, brain holding brain. [00:47:43] Speaker C: And he's got the dogs next to. [00:47:46] Speaker B: Him, possibly triple brain. Yeah. So, man, he's got the dogs. [00:47:55] Speaker A: He's going to bait him with these brains. [00:47:58] Speaker B: And it quotes the Bible, the new Bible. [00:48:01] Speaker C: That's where it ends us. [00:48:04] Speaker A: Wow, it's such a great cliffhanger and such a great issue. [00:48:06] Speaker C: Oh, man, it's so good. It clips by so fast, but it's so good. Spawning grounds is nothing but some pictures from that signing the Todd father did at that. [00:48:17] Speaker A: Yeah, that's fun. I remember I was like, let's road trip to was. [00:48:20] Speaker C: It was literally, he went to go visit his father and was like, yeah, I might as well do this here too. And then, like, on his own personal instagram, his dad was there with him for all of these sightings, and it just looked like so much fun. Like a good little father son outing to. [00:48:37] Speaker B: That's awesome. Yeah. The Todd father. [00:48:40] Speaker C: I'm a little sad they didn't put the Todd father's father. Because the Todd father refers to his dad as the Todd father. So he's the taughtdest of fathers. [00:48:52] Speaker A: The taughtiest. [00:48:54] Speaker C: I'm sad that he's not in these pictures. But we know he was there. [00:48:58] Speaker B: And you're right, by the way. [00:48:59] Speaker A: It shows all those covers. That was soul crusher. [00:49:01] Speaker C: It was soul crusher. [00:49:01] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:49:02] Speaker C: They changed the back page on us again, Johnny. It's got that king spawn on his throne. [00:49:08] Speaker A: It's just all the Instagram and TikTok. [00:49:10] Speaker B: And all the different ads or ads different at. [00:49:18] Speaker A: That's Kingspawn. 21, baby. 21 years old. That can legally drink. [00:49:23] Speaker C: Now it can get checked into rehab. [00:49:27] Speaker B: Yes. [00:49:28] Speaker A: Just like Cyan. [00:49:30] Speaker C: So, Johnny, I think that means we got to rate these puppies. [00:49:34] Speaker A: It's time to rate these puppies. [00:49:36] Speaker B: First up, we had spawn 304, a multichaptered action storyline. [00:49:45] Speaker A: Hellhunt part three. I really like this issue. I like Jessica Priest stuff. [00:49:51] Speaker B: I love the art. [00:49:52] Speaker A: The penultimate Hellhunt story here has the. [00:49:55] Speaker B: Cool, like, I don't know. [00:49:56] Speaker A: Fucked up, like, shooting. I don't know. [00:49:58] Speaker B: It's just a good issue with Spawn. And then you get medieval. I'm going to give it four and a half. [00:50:06] Speaker A: Four and a half no's. Because with Jessica Spawn. Turn it market. Y'all know it's funny. [00:50:12] Speaker C: Four and a half double nose. [00:50:14] Speaker B: Four and a half double nose. [00:50:15] Speaker A: But I say double yes to the issue. [00:50:20] Speaker B: I'm going to give it three and. [00:50:23] Speaker C: A half broken Santa Mons. [00:50:25] Speaker B: Because. Nice. [00:50:29] Speaker C: A couple of issues that we had. [00:50:30] Speaker B: That we discovered that we talked about on the way. It's just kind of a no. [00:50:34] Speaker A: I knocked off the hat. I would have given it five, but I knocked it off. Because just the text dump with Mark is just like, okay. It's a little confusing. It's a little much. [00:50:41] Speaker C: Yeah. Art is beautiful. The story right now, we're lost in the churn of the story. So I have a feeling that the next issue is going to be, like, super cathartic blowout. It's not that it's bad. It's still a good issue. But we got to get through that churn. [00:51:08] Speaker B: That's just part of it. [00:51:09] Speaker A: I just love Jessica so much. [00:51:11] Speaker B: Which is why I got to give. [00:51:15] Speaker C: You definitely upped your score because of that first shot of her in this issue, didn't you? [00:51:21] Speaker A: I don't know what you're talking about, David. I have no idea what you're talking about, man. [00:51:25] Speaker C: I'm surprised you didn't mention the underboob. [00:51:28] Speaker A: I mean, I thought it. [00:51:30] Speaker C: Because it is, like, right there, like, in your face. [00:51:36] Speaker A: Indeed it is. [00:51:37] Speaker C: I can think of worse reasons to give it a good score. [00:51:41] Speaker A: Hey, there you go. [00:51:42] Speaker B: See? [00:51:42] Speaker A: Worse reasons. [00:51:43] Speaker C: Yes, definitely, indeed. Especially because you like Jessica priest as a whole person. Getting to see more of Jessica Priest is good. [00:51:51] Speaker B: I'm madly in love with her. Yes. [00:51:54] Speaker A: We get madly in love on the COVID of this Kingsmont 21 because we got Wanda in the wedding dress. [00:51:59] Speaker B: Oh, hell, yeah. [00:52:00] Speaker C: That classic, classic wanda. [00:52:02] Speaker A: Love this issue. [00:52:04] Speaker B: It's great. [00:52:05] Speaker A: It doesn't feel as short as that last one. It feels, like a little more meaty. [00:52:08] Speaker C: But it's still too short. But, yeah, it's definitely not too short. [00:52:13] Speaker A: I'm going to give it five. [00:52:14] Speaker B: I'm going to give it five photoshopped. [00:52:18] Speaker A: Images of Sam's head getting cut with a knife that they show him to freak him out. [00:52:23] Speaker C: Hell, yeah. [00:52:24] Speaker A: Little Butcher knife. [00:52:25] Speaker C: Nice. [00:52:25] Speaker B: I'm going to give it five of those. [00:52:28] Speaker C: It's a cleaver. [00:52:29] Speaker B: It's a cleaver. Cleaver. [00:52:31] Speaker A: Thank you, knife man. [00:52:33] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm going to give it five. Little twitch's mustache is the only thing that's not black. [00:52:43] Speaker A: A twitch's mustache in the dark. You can just follow it in a dark room. You can see it just glows on its own. [00:52:49] Speaker B: Oh, man, I am loving this arc. [00:52:54] Speaker C: This is a great. [00:52:55] Speaker A: Oh, it's great. [00:53:00] Speaker C: We love our boys, Sam and twitch. [00:53:04] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:53:05] Speaker C: I can't really think off the top of my head anytime that we've ever followed them separately. [00:53:11] Speaker A: Yeah, it was interesting to see Sam go off on his own, and it was, like, scary that he got kidnapped. [00:53:15] Speaker C: So it's good to know that Sam. [00:53:18] Speaker B: Doesn'T require twitch to be an interesting. [00:53:21] Speaker C: Like, he doesn't need twitch to play off to remain interesting. I still like the dynamic between them, but seeing, because the thing is, a lot of times Sam is made to be the doofus, but seeing in this. [00:53:36] Speaker B: Arc just how competent Sam is, just. [00:53:42] Speaker A: Hands down, it's cool to see him being capable. [00:53:45] Speaker B: Yeah, it's real good. Well, I have a special guest that I mentioned. Well, I mentioned a special guest at. [00:53:53] Speaker A: The beginning of the episode. [00:53:55] Speaker C: Yes, you did. [00:53:55] Speaker A: We have a little. [00:53:58] Speaker B: Guest in the. [00:53:59] Speaker A: Studio here with me in studio closet two b, as we call it. To be or not to be. This is closet to be. [00:54:08] Speaker B: So that is to say, it's time. [00:54:11] Speaker A: For Todd's toy talk. All right, so if you remember, I drunkenly one day ordered the four Batman. Not drunkenly. I had, like, a couple beers. [00:54:33] Speaker B: All right, whatever. And I've ordered the Batman figures, yes. [00:54:39] Speaker A: To get the build a bane. [00:54:41] Speaker C: Build a bane. [00:54:42] Speaker A: And we're going through those. [00:54:44] Speaker B: And the best one I can think. [00:54:46] Speaker A: Of for these issues are more related. [00:54:48] Speaker B: Is it says in the beginning, in the recap of the. [00:54:54] Speaker A: Previously on Spawn and 304, it says, face to face. [00:54:58] Speaker B: So guess who this is. [00:55:00] Speaker A: I'm face to face with two Face. [00:55:01] Speaker C: Hey, face to face was the name of the song. That was a single for Batman returns. [00:55:08] Speaker B: Hey, there you go. [00:55:09] Speaker A: No, I've got two face here. [00:55:10] Speaker B: I mean, the swan 304 is kind. [00:55:13] Speaker A: Of about duplicitous nature. You got, I don't know, two Face. [00:55:18] Speaker B: Why not? Yeah. Nice. [00:55:20] Speaker C: I like build a bane is like, if you were to go to build a bear and make a bane doll. [00:55:25] Speaker B: You could build a bane. [00:55:26] Speaker A: Right? So this one comes with the torso of Bane. [00:55:30] Speaker C: Oh, nice. [00:55:31] Speaker A: So I've got it here. I'm shaking the package. [00:55:35] Speaker B: Let me pull out my handy dandy swiss army knife. But, yeah, it's got that. Nice. This is part of the DC multiverse. [00:55:45] Speaker A: Line from McFarlane, the ubiquitous line. That's excellent. They're, like, going to make everything that's ever been made in DC ever into a toy, which is admirable, it seems. Pop it open here. [00:56:00] Speaker C: It always sounds so good, Johnny. [00:56:03] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:56:05] Speaker A: All right, now I'm gonna. Okay, I gotta switch. Let me set this down. I gotta switch. As we learned on my pocket knife, if you switch to scissor mode, I call it scissor mode. Makes it a lot easier to get this little plasticky little ties out because. [00:56:20] Speaker B: Otherwise they're kind of hard cutting through. [00:56:23] Speaker C: Those, as it's a swiss army knife. You could call it Swizzer mode instead of scissor mode. [00:56:28] Speaker A: Swizzer mode. This comes with Bane's torso. So I'm going to pop that out. I got Bane's torso here first. [00:56:39] Speaker B: Okay, there he is. [00:56:40] Speaker C: Nice. [00:56:41] Speaker A: It's a torso. [00:56:42] Speaker B: And then we got two face. [00:56:46] Speaker C: Nice. [00:56:47] Speaker B: He's got. Oh, cool. [00:56:48] Speaker C: Is he talking out of both sides of his mouth? [00:56:50] Speaker B: He could. [00:56:51] Speaker A: Oh, he's looking all scarred. He's all gross looking. [00:56:54] Speaker B: His eyeballs are like. [00:56:55] Speaker A: His eyeballs, like, wet. [00:56:56] Speaker B: It's cool. [00:56:56] Speaker A: It looks like Aaron Eckhart. [00:56:58] Speaker B: Nice. [00:56:59] Speaker A: He's got the burn suit on one side, and he's got the coin in his hand. [00:57:04] Speaker C: Is it like a permanently affixed coin? [00:57:05] Speaker B: It's a permanently affixed coin. [00:57:07] Speaker A: And his other hand looks like you could put a gun in there because he always has that pistol in the movie. He has nice. So he's that McFarland accessory pack and put that pistol in. [00:57:17] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:57:18] Speaker A: He's got a lot of articulation. Pretty cool. [00:57:21] Speaker B: That's a badass figure, man. [00:57:24] Speaker C: It's a great two face. [00:57:26] Speaker B: He's all burnt. [00:57:27] Speaker A: I loved. Yeah, I just watched that movie recently. He's really good in that movie. [00:57:30] Speaker B: Yeah, he's like the third lead. [00:57:31] Speaker A: And the only thing about it is it becomes its own sequel where it has that like 45 minutes two faced thing, which almost wish you would have. [00:57:37] Speaker B: Saved it for another movie. But he's really good in it. [00:57:42] Speaker A: And it's pretty heartbreaking that he turns. [00:57:45] Speaker B: Because he's such a good character. Yeah, I love it when they pull. [00:57:48] Speaker A: The gun on him. [00:57:49] Speaker B: He's like, he breaks, it doesn't work. [00:57:51] Speaker A: And he's like, you want to shoot a public servant used by american and takes the gun from him. [00:57:58] Speaker B: What do you think of the Tommy. [00:57:59] Speaker A: Lee Jones two face? [00:58:00] Speaker C: Tommy Lee Jones two Face? [00:58:02] Speaker B: Not bad. Not bad. [00:58:04] Speaker A: It's hilarious. He's just like Joker too. It's ridiculous. [00:58:08] Speaker B: I honestly would have preferred for them. [00:58:12] Speaker C: To have followed through with the fucking Billy D. Williams two Face because I know, of course, that would have been great. [00:58:19] Speaker B: But I mean, Batman forever is wild. [00:58:25] Speaker C: So I appreciate it for what it is. [00:58:28] Speaker B: I like Batman forever. [00:58:29] Speaker C: I like Batman forever, too. I think I like Batman and Robin more because it's the one I've watched the, you know, as a kid, it was the newer one. [00:58:38] Speaker B: Newer is best. [01:03:56] Speaker A: Why don't we do that and then get together and talk about it? [01:03:59] Speaker C: Yeah, why don't we do that? So why don't we do two books again next week? [01:04:04] Speaker B: Sounds like a plan. [01:04:05] Speaker C: For our classic. We'll be doing spawn 305. [01:04:08] Speaker B: Picking up right where we left off here for hell hunt, part four. [01:04:35] Speaker C: Five and 340, both sides. We read 304 this week. It would have been better to have 304 and 340 at the same. But that's not how it worked out. [01:04:44] Speaker B: 305 how it worked out. We got to stick to the schedule. [01:04:48] Speaker A: Malbols, give us this schedule that we have to complete. [01:05:43] Speaker C: My mom loves all of the stuff we talk about that isn't spawn related. So I like to put a lot of non spawn related stuff in there. [01:05:50] Speaker B: So that way my mom could have something nice to listen to. That's good. Yeah. [01:05:56] Speaker C: She really liked the garbage truck tangent. [01:05:59] Speaker A: Oh, great.
