Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hey, all yell spawnverts. It's your co host David Williams here. And we have a special episode for you this week. It is a recording of our live show at c two e, 220 24.
[00:00:10] Speaker B: Woo.
[00:00:12] Speaker A: We covered spawn kills everyone, the one shot from 2016. And you will very quickly notice that we maybe had a little couple, two, three issues with the audio. Basically, it recorded way louder than we expected. But, you know, you can understand what we're saying all the way throughout. And it didn't make either of us really just want to throw our headphones across the room. So we do apologize for the crackliness of our voices due to the hotness of the mics. But, hey, you know, first live show, of course, we're gonna have a couple of hiccups. We enjoyed doing it with our crowd that we had there. We enjoyed talking about this absolutely ridiculous comic book. And we hope that you enjoy listening to it. If nothing else, it's very, very quick because we practiced, and you can tell. So let's go ahead and jump on into it.
Here we are. C two e 220 24. The boys give you Spanko's, everyone. 2016.
[00:01:25] Speaker B: Awesome. Well, good evening, and welcome to c two e two. This is regarding Spawn live. Thank you guys for making it.
If you haven't listened to regarding Spawn, we bring you two issues, usually on a usual episode from Spawn's universe, except when we don't, and this is one of those occasions where we're not. Yes, I am your co host, John Fisher.
[00:01:45] Speaker C: And I am your co host, David Williams. And I usually think of a funny question to ask Johnny at this point, but I didn't think of one.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: How about, how the hell are you doing? Welcome to me too, David. What do you think?
[00:01:58] Speaker C: Why don't you answer those questions?
[00:01:59] Speaker B: I know. Yeah.
[00:02:00] Speaker C: Burnt through my questions early.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: You burnt through them early. So today, what we're going to be going through is we're going to be covering spawn kills everyone, which is a one shot from 2016.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: 2016? Yes.
[00:02:15] Speaker B: 2016. Written by the toddfather himself, Todd McFarlane.
[00:02:19] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: Written by the toddfather. Drawn by JJ Kirby.
Just a really exciting. Oh, no, we'll adjust it.
Hey, perfect. Look at that. Thank you so much.
But, yeah, we're covering spawn kills everyone. It was a one shot from 2016. Written by Todd McFarlane.
[00:02:38] Speaker C: Yes, yes.
[00:02:38] Speaker B: The creator of Spawn.
[00:02:39] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: The Todd father.
[00:02:41] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:02:41] Speaker B: And it has lots of different covers.
[00:02:43] Speaker C: Johnny, we're looking at a lot of different covers.
[00:02:45] Speaker B: That it had seven different covers.
If you're familiar with Spawn, or if you're. Let's just say we got an audience here. How many people are currently following Spawn? Anyone in this? Big spawn fans?
[00:02:56] Speaker C: Yeah, come on.
[00:02:57] Speaker B: We know it. So if this is your first time or you're just wandering in. We do spawn every week on our podcast, but this week is live.
[00:03:09] Speaker C: Yeah, first time ever.
[00:03:10] Speaker B: First time ever. So we always start with covering the covers. There are seven covers for Spawn. Kills, everybody.
First up, you got Todd McFarlane right here. Gotta love him, the Todd father.
[00:03:22] Speaker C: Yeah, give him that. Little chibi spawn with a big belly.
[00:03:24] Speaker B: Little chibi spawn with a big belly. He's got a giant, impossible nineties gun. Everyone loves one of those. It's got, like, a rocket launcher and a scope on it.
We've got a JJ Kirby fco placencia up top there.
How do you pronounce it? Hey, we had a he, which is, like, spawned with a heap of different dead superheroes.
[00:03:45] Speaker C: Not the heap, though.
[00:03:46] Speaker B: Not the heap. Just a heap.
[00:03:48] Speaker C: R I p, heap.
[00:03:49] Speaker B: Another tonic fallen with dead people all around, baby. Cheeky spawn.
[00:03:54] Speaker C: It says, I didn't do nothing, mama. Exactly what it says.
[00:03:59] Speaker B: This issue is Tom McFarlane at his most deranged. It's nothing like regular spawn issues, as you'll see as we go along with it. But it is definitely worth going through.
[00:04:10] Speaker C: It's kind of like a collection of all of the fart jokes. From the first 20 issues put into one story.
[00:04:17] Speaker B: That's the funny part about spawn is we've been reading some of the classic ones. And, like, it's really serious and, like, grim and dark, which is really cool. But, like, in the early issues, there's a lot of fart jokes, you know, a lot of, like, burping in the alley. So this kind of gets back to that a little bit with, like, the, you know, you got the unhoused folks in the alley and the old one. And, you know, this kind of gets back to a little bit, some of that humor.
One interesting one is that bottom right in the middle, so it smile. Kills everyone at the office. That was exclusive to Todd McFarlane Productions. They only made that cover to distribute in the office. And Todd would write whoever's name it was in that word bubble. If it was Kim at the office, he'd be like, I'm going to kill Kim. And so that one's actually really collectible. I guess we were looking. That one, especially if you get one from an employee, is worth a lot of money. But what do we know? We just covered. What are the insides?
[00:05:09] Speaker C: I have a question for you, Johnny. What's up? Would it be better to work at a place where the HR representative has assigned spawn kills everyone in the office on their wall? Or do you want to stay far away from that company?
[00:05:21] Speaker B: I think that's good HR. Cause you understand that they get the joke a little bit, but, yeah, so that, that's a cool one to get, I guess a lot of times, Todd McFarland productions, in their little office, in a little world, they'll do a lot of, like, unique covers and things like that. And then you get some of the extreme collectors trying to find them, which is interesting because we're both. We're both here for the story. We're here for the love of Spawn. We're not really like hardcore collectors.
[00:05:48] Speaker C: A lot of people would be very upset with how we treat our collectors.
[00:05:51] Speaker B: We read them, which is, you know, weird.
[00:05:53] Speaker C: But I put them in. In a stack.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: What? What are you talking about? I put mine in the stack. But that's the beauty of spawn. It's only $2.99 every week, so you don't have to worry about it. You know, you just throw it around, beat it up. So those are your covers. And the spawn kills everyone.
[00:06:06] Speaker C: And like all books with a comic book, you gotta open the COVID to see who wrote it, right? Most of the time.
[00:06:12] Speaker B: Most of the time. And there he is, the Todd father himself, Todd McFarlane. We know him. We love him.
We have. Everyone has an opinion on him.
[00:06:23] Speaker C: He has heard several already today.
[00:06:26] Speaker B: What?
[00:06:26] Speaker C: We've heard several already.
[00:06:27] Speaker B: We heard several today. We're going on telling people we're doing a spawn podcast. And one guy just, like, went on a tirade about Todd McFarland. We were like, all right. I don't know. We just like spawn. Yeah. And so the writer is Tom McFarlane. Artist is JJ Kirby. Next to him here, colors.
[00:06:42] Speaker C: We got fto placencia.
[00:06:44] Speaker B: We got letters. Tom, Warden Chowski. We got to meet him on the floor today. He's here. He's great. He was awesome, super kind. And I actually got to meet him at SpawnCon in October. I went to Spawncon in Denver. It was the first annual one. There's going to be another one this year, some point September, I think. Keep an eye out on, like, spawncon. There's an instagram and a website, but it was really cool. I had a lot of fun. It was a smaller con. It was just at a hotel in Denver. But they're going to be doing another one, and it's going to be getting bigger and bigger. So he was there. He's here now. He just has. He's a workhorse, and he's done more spawn than Todd McFarlane.
[00:07:20] Speaker C: He's lettered pretty much everything.
And half the spin offs.
[00:07:25] Speaker B: At least half the spin offs. He's doing gunslinger right now. He's going to do deadly tales of the gunslinger coming up.
[00:07:30] Speaker C: He just said his wife likes the gunslinger stuff, so she's making him do all the gunslinger books.
[00:07:34] Speaker B: He doesn't love Gunslinger.
[00:07:36] Speaker C: He also likes the tall hat, so that's a stamp of approval from him.
[00:07:40] Speaker B: That's good.
Then we got creative directors. Tom McFarlane, again, the editor in chief, John Goff.
[00:07:47] Speaker C: I just learned he's a video game story writer. Man.
[00:07:50] Speaker B: He is.
[00:07:50] Speaker C: Yeah. I didn't know that.
[00:07:51] Speaker B: He also has written. John Goff, who's the editor in chief of this, has also written some spawn issues and is actually the advisor on the current stam and twitch. They just launched, which, now that they came up, I just have to mention you stand up. We are Sam and Twitch today.
[00:08:05] Speaker C: Well, in real life, too.
[00:08:07] Speaker B: In real life? In real life, I eat donuts and smoke cigarettes constantly. And he's a really good shot with a pistol. So we're just like Sam and twitch.
[00:08:16] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:08:17] Speaker B: Bob, if you're listening, I don't really smoke cigarettes anymore.
So next up, what do we got?
[00:08:23] Speaker C: We got writing to the story.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: Boom.
[00:08:25] Speaker C: Starts off like the ideal spawn issue. Like, this is what you want, him beating people up. Weird blamos, chain outlines the bones, and.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: It'S a chibi spawn. This whole issue is basically a chibi spawn kind of is.
[00:08:41] Speaker C: He's got an ego head and a cute belly, is what he calls it.
[00:08:44] Speaker B: Yeah, he's got an ego head and a cute belly. He comes to a con to. He comes to specifically. We're not there yet.
[00:08:50] Speaker C: We're not there yet.
[00:08:51] Speaker B: We're there.
[00:08:51] Speaker C: We start off with him being a badass.
[00:08:52] Speaker B: We start off with him murdering everyone. Yeah.
[00:08:54] Speaker C: Like, he's killing comic book people there.
[00:08:56] Speaker B: He's killing comic book people.
[00:08:58] Speaker C: And then we find out that he's just recounting his own experiences in the past while reading his past experiences on the toilet. On the toilet.
[00:09:09] Speaker B: This is where you get some good Todd McFarlane. Plop, plop, puke, poop, Hoover.
He's basically complaining about how San Diego Comic Con has become this place where you pitch movies, which sounds very toddfather esque. Someone is salty about a movie being made. I wonder why it's in this issue. You wonder, but you got a little chibi spawn here just kind of in the bathroom at San Diego Comic Con.
[00:09:35] Speaker C: Yeah. He's pumping himself up in the mirror because he says, well, just because Hollywood's a cesspit of comic book movies, that doesn't mean that I shouldn't get money off of it. And so, you know, he's like, I'm gonna be the movie that comes out next year.
[00:09:48] Speaker B: Well, yeah. You know, as we know, David, they've been dangling that carrot in front of us. It's been next year for what, like, ten years now or so.
[00:09:56] Speaker C: I think it actually came out last year and nobody noticed.
[00:09:58] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's right. It came out. But it's in real life, not in Chibi spawns life, but it is at Blumhouse now. There's supposed to be a script, so hopefully the new movie's coming.
But Todd McFarland loves to talk about it.
[00:10:14] Speaker C: I don't know.
[00:10:15] Speaker B: We don't know.
[00:10:16] Speaker C: I think they finished the draft.
[00:10:18] Speaker B: They finished the draft. We'll see.
[00:10:20] Speaker C: And then, you know, chibi Spinal punched. Well, punched himself up. Pumped himself up. He didn't punch nothing.
[00:10:27] Speaker B: Pumped himself up.
[00:10:28] Speaker C: Has decided he's going to figure out where the movies are pitched. And through convention action, learns that it's Hall E. Right? Hall E. Hall E. Yeah.
[00:10:40] Speaker B: He's going to Holly.
[00:10:41] Speaker C: So he's going to Holly. Yeah. And he's pushing his way through a whole bunch of people who are dressed up for a cosplay contest. And we're led to believe that chibi. Spawn is, indeed, actually spawn in a universe where Spawn exists as a comic book and other people dress up as other comic book characters.
[00:11:01] Speaker B: A little sweaty.
[00:11:02] Speaker C: It's a big ask, but that's. So he's around all these people with costumes on, and he figures that since he is the real spawn action or spawn action figure, action hero, superhero, whatever he is, that all the rest of them are, too. So he thinks that this guy, who is the first guy he kills in this book called Spawn kills everyone, is the Hulk.
[00:11:28] Speaker B: He's the hulk. And there's a toddler in trope that comes out here. I know we all know the clown.
[00:11:35] Speaker C: The clown.
[00:11:35] Speaker B: And we know some other spawn villains, but he likes. He likes to use, like, as a larger gentleman myself. Yeah, he likes to use larger gentlemen as villains.
[00:11:45] Speaker C: Yes, he does.
[00:11:45] Speaker B: For some reason.
[00:11:46] Speaker C: I don't know why.
[00:11:47] Speaker B: And then comment on it. That's just his. That's just his mo, like, clown.
All the, like, mob bosses in spot.
[00:11:56] Speaker C: The first guy he ever fought.
[00:11:58] Speaker B: First guy he ever fought, which was a big old, big old mob boss in, like, issue two. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He loves that. So, you know, Tommy, father probably wouldn't like me. He probably thinks I'm a villain.
[00:12:09] Speaker C: Probably.
I think you're a villain, Johnny.
[00:12:12] Speaker B: I am a villain of the podcast.
[00:12:14] Speaker C: All that to explain that. It's a. It just ends up with a fat joke at the end. Well, it was fun to fit with the flatulent theme. And then, you know, he goes on to another kill. He kills Deadpool. And what is perhaps the sweatiest pun of all time, Johnny? Is it?
[00:12:31] Speaker B: I think the next one's sweatier, but he makes a pun about killing him, and he says, now you're dead in a pool of blood.
So really got him there. Yeah, but, I mean, this is funny. This is kind of weird, too, because it's like Rob Liefeld created Deadpool and their buddies. So it's weird that you would have him in there and killing him.
It seems like he's kind of maybe jealous a little bit of them.
[00:12:54] Speaker C: I don't know. I don't know. Either that, or he admires people who get killed in this book, Johnny.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: Maybe he admires everyone that he kills off.
[00:13:00] Speaker C: That's what I would believe. And then he kills Darth Vader and Yoda.
[00:13:05] Speaker B: Okay, so this is a father and son.
He kills a father and son dressed as Darth Vader, and Yoda Sponge is on a rampage. And basically, he makes a really, really, really bad joke where he says, you're a really small yoda, like a toy Yoda, and I'm about to drive you with my fist. And then he cuts off the child's head, as you can see right there at the bottom. Or, no, Vader tries to kill. Spawn misses and cuts off the child's.
[00:13:34] Speaker C: Head, which is a little messed up.
[00:13:38] Speaker B: A little messed up. But, you know, hey, it's comic Con. It's gonna happen. It's secc. It's crazy.
[00:13:44] Speaker C: Yeah. And then the most canonical of event catastrophes, Johnny happens, and it is the falling of the chandelier.
And if we're gonna talk about sweaty, I'm gonna make a sweaty comparison. Where Spawn kills everyone is actually the exact same story as the phantom of the opera, including the chandelier. Crashing. Okay, I'm on board for that. He's a villain that obviously doesn't interact with this world very often, and he wants them to produce his musical Johnny.
[00:14:14] Speaker B: That's true. Spawn is very Phantom of the opera esque. Or, like dark man a little bit. Yeah, there's that kind of phantom adjacent hero where they live in an alley. They got a messed up face. They usually have a woman that they love. Like, Spawn's got Wanda, dark man's got Linda, or whatever her name is. And Phantom's got Christine.
So, you know, there's some fan of the opera in there.
Even with the dropping of the chandelier, I can see that.
[00:14:39] Speaker C: That's what makes it.
[00:14:40] Speaker B: That's what makes it.
[00:14:41] Speaker C: If it weren't for that, then it would be even sweatier.
[00:14:43] Speaker B: It would be even sweatier. But no. And then he makes a joke about Darth Vader where he says, you have too many movies. Which maybe this came out, like, after rogue one. I don't know. It's like, has Darth Vader been in a lot of movies recently?
[00:14:54] Speaker C: Not really, but you'd know better than I would.
[00:14:57] Speaker B: Yeah, I would know better than that. Yes, I would refer to you. He hasn't. He was in rogue one, and he was in a bunch of tv shows. Okay? It doesn't count.
But then they killed Darth Vader with the chandelier at the bottom right there.
[00:15:10] Speaker C: Yes, indeed. That's the end of him.
[00:15:13] Speaker B: That's the end of him.
[00:15:13] Speaker C: That's the end of him. Also, real quick, before we leave, he says, to quote your most famous line. No, I would argue that I.
[00:15:23] Speaker B: Your father is the more famous.
[00:15:25] Speaker C: More famous, yeah.
[00:15:26] Speaker B: No, he's pretty damn famous.
[00:15:27] Speaker C: He does say no. He does say no a lot, though. So if he's going by fame, by. You know what he says?
[00:15:33] Speaker B: He does say no. Well, they added in the no. They added in another no. This way he thinks he's famous. When he throws the emperor on the DVD or on the Disney version, he now also says no.
There's so many no's now.
[00:15:46] Speaker C: So many nos. Maybe the top followers on something we.
[00:15:48] Speaker B: Didn'T realize, something we didn't know.
[00:15:52] Speaker C: I also spoiled this because I skipped too early, so people got to see it.
[00:15:56] Speaker B: Okay, so then we've got four kills.
[00:15:59] Speaker C: The kills of Iron man.
[00:16:01] Speaker B: Kills Iron man.
[00:16:02] Speaker C: Kills Iron man.
[00:16:03] Speaker B: Yeah. It's so good.
[00:16:05] Speaker C: Well, the worst part is he digs open the can and he sees just a scared kid in there. And he gets so upset that it's not actually Tony Stark. That that's why he kills him.
[00:16:14] Speaker B: Yeah, he, like, rips it open. He's like, I got ripped off.
[00:16:17] Speaker C: I wanted Tony Stark absolutely messed up. That's exactly what the Phantom would do. He was petty as hell. That's basically what Masquerade was.
[00:16:24] Speaker B: Then he kills him in front of a bunch of, like, comic book or, like, Cartoon network characters.
Look on the. On the top one, in the middle, there's, like, finn and, like, all the characters from adventure time. And there's also mojo Jojo from Powerpuff girls who's like, why is he. I don't know. They're just throwing everything in there. But Spawn, a little cheeky spawn fills this Ironman, slices him out.
[00:16:49] Speaker C: He's so cute, but he's so spicy.
[00:16:50] Speaker B: He's just so spicy. He's just so. Spawn as a character is a brooding.
Is a kind of, like, brooding.
[00:16:58] Speaker C: He's kind of pokey.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: He's kind of mopey. But, you know, he's got a lot to mope about. He's got. He lost his wife.
[00:17:05] Speaker C: Yeah, but he also has a lot to not mope about. He gets to hang out with bootsy.
[00:17:09] Speaker B: Yeah. He has to hang out with, like, haunt and, like, the scorch and everybody.
[00:17:13] Speaker C: Yeah, but you got to hang out with Saigor.
[00:17:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:17:16] Speaker C: You know how much money I would give to hang out with Saigor?
[00:17:19] Speaker B: A lot. You do like the monkey. They use Saigor on the covers a lot, but he's not in the book enough.
[00:17:23] Speaker C: Not in the book enough.
[00:17:24] Speaker B: Where is Saigor?
[00:17:27] Speaker C: Okay, so the next person he kills is he. It's a double one, this one.
[00:17:31] Speaker B: You know, it's definitely from 2016.
[00:17:33] Speaker C: Yeah, from July 2016.
[00:17:36] Speaker B: Because he goes, he sees red skull, and Donald Trump is there.
Exactly. So Todd McFarlane, in his craziness, decides to have him cut off Donald Trump's head and switch him with red skull.
And he says, much better.
So that makes sense.
Yeah, that's pretty good.
[00:18:01] Speaker C: Then he kills Venom.
[00:18:05] Speaker B: Kills everybody.
[00:18:06] Speaker C: So an ignoble end for a previous Todd McFarlane co creation, Venom.
[00:18:15] Speaker B: Right. This is kind of, like, interesting because it's Todd McFarlane's creation killing his other creator. Yeah.
[00:18:20] Speaker C: And he farts him to death.
We told you that these were puerile issues. Yeah.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: This is the part where it really gets real.
[00:18:30] Speaker C: Real, the most serious part of the issue.
[00:18:34] Speaker B: Fart.
That's how he kills Venom, which is funny. It's interesting because, like, we just met.
[00:18:44] Speaker C: The man who got to write these very letters.
[00:18:46] Speaker B: Yes. That's Tom Wozczowski. You can go meet him and be like, I saw your fart on a panel at Spawn Con or Comic Con.
I renamed Spawn Con. Now in this room, it's now Spawn. Congratulations.
I actually did see some good compared to last year. I saw two spawn shirts out there.
[00:19:08] Speaker C: I saw.
[00:19:10] Speaker B: I heard a lot of good spawn back issues.
[00:19:12] Speaker C: Hell, yeah.
[00:19:13] Speaker B: There were some really good spin offs. I saw a bunch of curses of spawn.
I didn't see a lot of the. I didn't see as many toys as I did last year. Maybe people have been buying them up, but I definitely did see a lot more shirts and stuff, which is good, because I remember last year I came, and the one thing I wanted was a spawn shirt, and they didn't have it. They had one that was like a. Like a. Like a medium, something I couldn't fit into. But they have a bunch. Something I couldn't fit into. They have a bunch this year, so that's good.
[00:19:39] Speaker C: That's good.
[00:19:40] Speaker B: That means our man's growing. I mean, Spawn's just. Yeah, he's got his universe expanding. Yeah, he's a fun character. What are you gonna do?
[00:19:47] Speaker C: So then his next kill is he kills all of the Walking Dead.
[00:19:53] Speaker B: The entirety.
[00:19:53] Speaker C: The entire walking dead.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: You got Negan up there.
[00:19:58] Speaker C: Whole bunch of zombies.
[00:20:00] Speaker B: Whole bunch of zombies. I don't know, shown.
Yeah.
[00:20:04] Speaker C: I don't watch the Walking Dead, so I don't know who Wally kills, but he kills all of them.
[00:20:08] Speaker B: He kills. Those are two main characters, and then the rest are just walkers. And then, of course, since it's Todd McFarlane, he has to have a shout.
[00:20:14] Speaker C: Out to Robert Kirkman to come write a spawn story or graphic novel.
[00:20:21] Speaker B: The last panel, he's like, sorry, Captain Kirkman, please come write a spawn book.
So this is Tom McFarlane, even though he's sober, was on that good stuff when he wrote this.
[00:20:33] Speaker C: It made him extra sassy, too.
He's pretty sassy at a baseline, but this made him extra sassy. And then to follow it up, he gets mistaken for having been a contestant at the costume contest that was judged by Todd McFarland himself.
And as you can see, he wins the first prize at the costume contest, and he gets pissed off, but everybody doesn't realize that he's who he is, and so he kills Todd McFarlane.
[00:21:05] Speaker B: I mean, kills him good.
[00:21:06] Speaker C: This man died in the middle of writing this book, Johnny.
[00:21:09] Speaker B: How did we even get it? He dies right there in the book.
[00:21:12] Speaker C: And yet there's more book after this.
[00:21:14] Speaker B: It doesn't make any sense.
Well, it doesn't make any sense. Why doesn't Tom and farther come to c two e two anymore?
[00:21:19] Speaker C: Well, right now he's in Canada.
[00:21:21] Speaker B: Well, why isn't he here?
[00:21:23] Speaker C: His dad is there.
[00:21:24] Speaker B: It makes sense. He's in Canada. I guess he was from Canada, but he should come here, and. Yeah, he should. They need more of a spawn presence at c two e two.
[00:21:34] Speaker C: Yeah. Or anything. Or just, you know, they could come hang out for the weekend. Yeah, I'd be cool with that.
[00:21:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:21:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:21:42] Speaker B: And then he bursts through Todd McFarland, like, punches through him in that bottom right one.
[00:21:48] Speaker C: And then he gets serious again and says that everyone needs to grow an ego head and a cute belly and start killing people that they don't like.
Which maybe not the best message.
[00:22:05] Speaker B: But I think that's the point. This spawn is supposed to be.
He's out of hand. He's got a little shit.
[00:22:12] Speaker C: A little hellion.
[00:22:13] Speaker B: He's a little hellion. He's like, I don't know. Had anyone read this one shot before? We just went through it. Yeah, it was interesting. It's just fun. It's just a fun one off. And I know that there's a sequel where it gets even crazier and he.
[00:22:28] Speaker C: Kills, and then there'll be another one later this year.
[00:22:30] Speaker B: There's another one this year. So this year they're coming out with spawn kills every spawn, which is going to be spawn killing, she spawn, gunslinger, and all the other spawn. So that'll be pretty fun. But it's another goofy one, and that's the end. That's the end of the issue. Question mark.
[00:22:52] Speaker C: So, I mean, I remember taking a lot longer to read through it than that.
[00:22:59] Speaker B: It's the adrenaline.
[00:23:00] Speaker C: It's a weird sort of time space you fall into where it takes no time to read it. But it's also so bizarre that it feels like it takes forever.
[00:23:09] Speaker B: It's just like a fun text. Avery cartoon. And it's fun that they got to take spawn and do something crazy with it. And the reason we picked this for doing this live show is because it takes place in a con, obviously, and it's just a little more irreverent.
But it's not.
[00:23:24] Speaker C: It's not a bad spawn to have as your first spawn.
[00:23:28] Speaker B: It's an interesting introduction, that's for sure. If it is your first spawn, or.
[00:23:31] Speaker C: At least not the worst.
[00:23:33] Speaker B: It's not the worst.
[00:23:34] Speaker C: I don't know if it's the best. Would anybody continue on 19 series of this character based off of this issue alone? Because they're doing it. They're going to have 19 books pretty soon. 19 books.
[00:23:49] Speaker B: We've got all the four core ones. And then, like, all the spin offs and. Yeah, it's good. Is it really 19?
[00:23:55] Speaker C: I think so. Because there were supposed to be 14 new titles or 15 new titles.
[00:23:59] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:24:00] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:24:01] Speaker B: All right. Swans universe.
[00:24:03] Speaker C: It better be 19, because that's what? I put in the copy for this particular thing, and I don't want to be.
[00:24:08] Speaker B: You don't want to be a liar on that?
[00:24:10] Speaker C: I don't want to be blasting on main something that's not telling tails out of school.
[00:24:17] Speaker B: So, David, what do we do after we read these issues?
[00:24:20] Speaker C: So usually by this point, I have been distracted three or four times by some dog or another doing some other or something that they shouldn't do.
It usually comes around the end of the issues, luckily. And then we get to rate the puppies. So it's time for us to rate the puppies honest opinions. We're gonna need the big one. The big one. Out of one to ten, what does everybody rate the one all the way to your right. Two.
[00:24:50] Speaker B: Two.
[00:24:51] Speaker C: Seriously?
[00:24:52] Speaker B: That's it.
[00:24:54] Speaker C: I have eleven dogs, and he's my favorite.
[00:24:57] Speaker B: He does look dog.
[00:24:58] Speaker C: Yeah, well, he ain't got no teeth.
[00:25:00] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:25:04] Speaker C: Man.
[00:25:05] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:25:07] Speaker C: The little one left, she's a porker. She's shaped like a football.
[00:25:15] Speaker B: What is the one in the middle?
[00:25:16] Speaker C: He's trying to eat grass. That's Mister Rufus.
He can't see anything or hear anything and just walks in circles.
[00:25:23] Speaker B: David is a caretaker of elderly puppies. So he's a good man.
[00:25:29] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:25:30] Speaker B: But they always, in the actual episodes we listen, we record, they're always trying to bark and get in on the episode. So we gotta. Gotta give them a tip of the hat.
[00:25:38] Speaker C: So we always refer to this as rating the puppies. And really, the puppies is the issue? Yes.
[00:25:43] Speaker B: So this is where we review the issue we just went over.
Spawn kills everyone. One shot.
What's up?
Plus the puppies.
[00:25:55] Speaker C: Plus the puppies.
[00:25:56] Speaker B: Plus the puppies. But yeah, I mean, I. It's a fun issue. It's really irreverent. It's nice to get that spawn that's just a little less serious.
And what I like about Spawn, just the whole thing, is it can have so much multitudes of stuff. You have the really dark issues in the main line. Scorch is really fun and action y. And you have gunslinger, which is a little more goofy and kind of comedy sometimes.
And this is in that comedy zone. And what's cool about Spahn and why he's endured since 1992 is that he's flexible and he can make fun of himself. And that's what I like about him. And this was a fun one.
I can't remember what I rated it.
[00:26:41] Speaker C: Okay. So we always give it a one to five rating on an item that we focused on a little bit in the issue. And Johnny rated his.
[00:26:53] Speaker B: Four point or.
[00:26:54] Speaker C: 3.53.5 sweaty Yoda puns.
[00:26:57] Speaker B: 3.5 sweaty toy Yoda puns is what I give this issue because, I mean, the Toyota pun is just like, really? Okay. But it's fun. It's fun to see spawn, like, just like, take the piss out a little bit and just have a little bit of irreverence to it.
Yeah, it was a good issue. What do you think, David?
[00:27:19] Speaker C: I enjoyed it the second time I read it. The first time I read it, I was a little taken aback.
[00:27:24] Speaker B: It is a lot to take in.
[00:27:26] Speaker C: I'm sorry. I actually clutched my throat when I read it the first time when I was reading it on a bus surrounded by a whole bunch of children.
I thought a parent was going to escort me away.
[00:27:40] Speaker B: That's the worst part about reading image comics or spawn. And then what was I reading on the bus? I was reading, like, you remember reading, like, witchblade on the bus?
Get in trouble. Yeah, some of those spawn covers too. Like, you open it up and you're just like, whoa, a little gory in there. But, you know.
[00:27:57] Speaker C: Yeah.
There was one particular issue of local man that I read on the train without realizing that there was going to be full genitalia in it. And.
[00:28:13] Speaker B: I remember reading the why the last movie, man on the train, where he's getting like, there's like, the bondage woman. And I was like, I was, like, trying to read it without, like, showing off too much.
[00:28:24] Speaker C: It really is really bad when it's at night and you try to lean against the window, but it's just gonna reflect it. Yeah.
[00:28:31] Speaker B: And then everyone sees what you're doing.
[00:28:32] Speaker C: But, you know, second and third reading, reading ratings, not so pearl clutching.
I enjoyed it. It was fun. It was a great little escape from basically everything what we normally read.
[00:28:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:46] Speaker C: And I really appreciated the watch that Todd McFarlane had.
And so I'm going to give it four watches.
And it just happens that the watch actually only appears four times in the issue, so.
[00:29:00] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:29:00] Speaker C: Yeah, that's great fun.
That's probably more work than I needed to put into that, huh? Johnny? I'm wondering where my focus is going.
[00:29:10] Speaker B: I want a spawn watch now.
Anything with that spawn orb is pretty cool.
[00:29:15] Speaker A: It is pretty cool.
[00:29:20] Speaker C: That's it.
[00:29:20] Speaker B: That spawn kills everyone.
[00:29:22] Speaker C: We focused just on the spawn this time. We usually tangent about random things throughout.
[00:29:29] Speaker B: Well, we can talk a little bit about what has your comic con experience been like, David?
[00:29:35] Speaker C: This one in particular.
[00:29:36] Speaker B: Yeah, this one in particular. You didn't get any fights.
[00:29:40] Speaker C: No, no, I didn't.
[00:29:41] Speaker B: I didn't.
[00:29:42] Speaker C: I didn't.
No. I also didn't sit on the toilet with my pants fully off. So I think I'm doing slightly better than this.
[00:29:51] Speaker B: Slightly better than that spawn. Yeah.
[00:29:53] Speaker C: It's not been too bad. This is my first one in several years, and I think I've aged more than I thought I did.
[00:30:03] Speaker B: How I can get to you.
[00:30:04] Speaker C: I am a sleepy man, and.
[00:30:08] Speaker B: But other than that, it's been fun.
[00:30:10] Speaker C: I've missed it. The last time I went to a convention was pre pandemic, so.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:30:14] Speaker C: This is my first time being around this number of people since then, so.
[00:30:18] Speaker B: It'S been a while. I came last year, and I went to before pandemic. I came here for Star wars celebration. So if you listen to the pod.
[00:30:26] Speaker C: It was in 2018.
[00:30:27] Speaker B: Or was that 2019? It was right before the rise of Skywalker came out and disappointed everybody.
But, yeah, it's been a good comic con. Like I said, there's more spawn stuff this year, it seems.
Have you guys, has everyone been keeping up with the new Spawn series? Yeah. Which is your favorite out of them?
Yeah.
[00:30:51] Speaker C: Hell, yeah.
[00:30:51] Speaker B: So much fun. We love the gunslinger.
[00:30:53] Speaker A: So much fun.
[00:30:54] Speaker C: He's got a little dinosaur.
[00:30:56] Speaker B: He's got a dinosaur and a giant hat. What's up? The look, we're really excited to see where it goes after this 350, because if you guys don't know, spawn kind of just had a big tumultuous event where everything kind of culminated this issue 350, and it kind of affected all the other titles. And we're seeing where the fallout is from that which you have the new Spawn costume on, basically because you got the new.
Yeah, the new kind of like the cowl or. I don't know what you call it, but Spawn kind of lost his powers, so his cape isn't as crazy now, so now it's more like he has to kind of wrap it around himself. But, yeah, it was really cool that we got spawn himself here to come, so that's pretty awesome.
Yeah, we can see it after.
And speaking of that, when we're done here, we do have stickers, so everyone please come by and get some stickers for yourself and to pass around. I will. I put one anywhere.
[00:32:01] Speaker C: I put one on one of the bridges across Michigan. Not Michigan Avenue, the river. And it's still there. It hasn't gotten buffed off, so they stick real good. They're real good stickers.
[00:32:13] Speaker B: But, yeah, that is. Spawn kills everyone.
[00:32:17] Speaker C: Spawn kills everyone.
[00:32:18] Speaker B: And we are regarding spawn, we are regarding spawn, respond.
[00:32:21] Speaker C: And since we have people here, does anybody want to ask a random nerdy question about Spawn to see if we.
[00:32:28] Speaker B: Know any spawn questions?
[00:32:32] Speaker C: Any questions at all? We'll even take non spawn questions. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's a very popular remark.
[00:32:45] Speaker B: Stripped it away and came back.
What's a good place to start?
[00:32:54] Speaker A: Very good.
[00:32:55] Speaker B: That's a great question. And there's actually a couple answers. But I would say right now, probably, I think the best place to start would either be with one of the spin offs, either gunslinger or king Spawn or honestly, like, 350 is a pretty good jumping on point. It just happened a couple issues ago. Pretty good jumping on point. They also had a really good jumping on point. About 297. They did like, a recap of everything that had come before and then just, like, started fresh. But even that, there's a little bit of filler right after that. I feel like you could start at, like, 350 and still be okay.
[00:33:33] Speaker C: 350, I think, would be a good place to start.
[00:33:35] Speaker B: But honestly, I would check out the smaller run, the new series. Like our friend said, gunslinger is a great place to start.
It's just a really fun, like, western, about, like, another spawn from the western times. And Kingspawn is kind of the more serious, like we describe it as. Like, if regular spawn is like the network tv show, King Spawn is like the HBO version. It's just a little more serious, a little more dark, and that one's really good. Sean Lewis.
[00:34:04] Speaker C: Definitely no fart jokes in that one.
[00:34:06] Speaker B: No fart jokes at all.
[00:34:09] Speaker C: That's the serious, serious one. All the fart jokes moved to Gunslinger.
[00:34:14] Speaker B: Yeah. All the fart jokes are the dinosaurs and gunslinger.
[00:34:16] Speaker C: Is that why that's my favorite series, Johnny?
[00:34:18] Speaker B: Oh, it might be why I think you like the fart jokes too much.
[00:34:22] Speaker C: Hey, what can I say?
[00:34:23] Speaker B: He loves them. They're good.
[00:34:25] Speaker C: They're always funny. Always funny.
[00:34:27] Speaker B: Well, no, there's a certain amount, right. You said Mel Brooks.
[00:34:29] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[00:34:32] Speaker B: When Mel Brooks is making the fart scene around the fire and blazing saddles, he had to test how many farts to put in. And there was one that was too many.
[00:34:38] Speaker C: There was one that was too many.
[00:34:39] Speaker B: Cut it out.
[00:34:39] Speaker C: Too many farts. So scientifically proven. The funniest number of farts is blazing saddles.
[00:34:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah, I would say those. That's a good place to start if you want to go crazy. They do have the compendiums out now, which are pretty affordable. Like, they're like $50 for 50 issues. And they go all the way up to, I think 250 they've got so far, so those are always really good places to start. It's been fun. Like, I just got in. I've always loved spawn. Like, as a kid, I was into it and kind of had a big gap, but I really got into it recently, and it's been fun just to kind of just jump in and discover what I've discovered. And, like, you know, it does have a continuity, but it is loosey goosey enough. You can kind of jump in and out with it.
[00:35:20] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:35:21] Speaker B: So I would say just whatever you can find or get your hands on. Or maybe some of the new stuff, I think would be a good place to start. Yeah, of course.
[00:35:28] Speaker C: Guns.
Well, also, if you like X Men, the scorch is an X Men analog, so it doesn't have anywhere near as many people, so it's less confusing.
[00:35:38] Speaker B: Yeah, that's the team book. That's she spawn, haunt, gunslinger, basically, she spawn, Redeemer, and medieval Spawn are kind of the core members, but everyone in Spawn's universe kind of comes in and out. But, yeah, there's a team.
[00:35:55] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:35:55] Speaker B: Yeah, there's a team. Yeah. Scorch, which is our catchphrase, maybe the scorch to be with you. The scorch is the spawn team.
[00:36:02] Speaker C: We like a Star wars pun.
[00:36:03] Speaker B: We like a Star wars pun. We like bad Star wars puns. Just like the Todd father does. That's why we like the Toyota. It's obviously we're cut from the same cloth. Yeah.
Yeah. Any other questions from anybody?
Sweet. Well, thank you so much for coming, guys. Please come up and grab some stickers and keep spreading that spawn love. And we are respawn available wherever you get a podcast. And if you're getting to spawn, we'll help you guide you along.
Thank you, everyone, so much for coming in. It really meant a lot to have some people here. So thank you. Thanks. Yeah. Thank you, guys.
Awesome. And that is Spawn kills everyone at Comic Con.
[00:36:42] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:36:42] Speaker B: All right. Sweet.
[00:36:44] Speaker C: Hopefully not based on a true story.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: Hopefully not. Hopefully not. We're all doomed.
[00:36:57] Speaker A: And there we have it. The first live regarding spawn episode in the books. We enjoyed the book. We enjoyed talking about it. We enjoyed talking with all the spawn fans at c two E 224. We enjoyed talking to the Tom father Tom O himself. Oh, my God.
Such a good time. We wish you all could have been there. This is the next best thing.
Another next best thing would be if you didn't get the stickers that we talked about in the show. Send us an email avregardingspawnpodmail.com. Give us your address. We will send you a sticker.
How about that? It's like you're at the live show because you get the stickers and the audio. And you didn't even have to go.
Beautiful. Don't forget to follow us at regardingspawnpod on Instagram. Don't forget to give some love to our wonderful maestro of music, Mister Brian Voyles. Brian Voyles, 27. We don't think we'd be anywhere without him. So go ahead and give him. Give him some love. Give him some love. Don't forget to read more spawn. Don't forget to read more comics. Especially the comics about Spawn. You can read non comic, Spawn related stuff. But, you know, just keep doing what you're doing. Spawn related. And, you know, everybody from me, on behalf of Johnny and myself, from, you know, all of the good times we had at c two E two.
Thank you, and may the scorch be with you channel.
