[00:00:00] Speaker A: All right, thanks, detectives. That should do it for now. If I have any other questions, I'll reach out. [00:00:07] Speaker B: We're here if you need us. [00:00:10] Speaker A: Ditto. Foreign, And welcome to the Malibu. This is regarding Spawn, the world's best Spawn podcast. I am your co host, John Fisher. [00:00:52] Speaker B: And I am your co host, David Williams. And Johnny, we got a. We got a lot. We got a lot to talk about. [00:00:58] Speaker A: What do we talk about? [00:01:00] Speaker B: We got a lot of Hadestown to talk about. [00:01:02] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that. [00:01:03] Speaker B: Eagle eared listeners will know that I have been trying to get you to listen to this for years. [00:01:09] Speaker A: What are you talking about? [00:01:12] Speaker B: I've been trying to convince you to listen to Hadestown for a very long time. [00:01:15] Speaker A: I know. I listened to it once when it came out my apartment. [00:01:19] Speaker B: It didn't get you through Covid? It got me through Covid. [00:01:22] Speaker A: Nah. No, I was listening a lot sadder than that, [00:01:29] Speaker B: Johnny. That's some sad shit. Some sad shit. My. I got my mom to. I got my mom to watch it. [00:01:36] Speaker A: The story will be retold and maybe it'll be different this time. [00:01:40] Speaker B: But that was long ago. [00:01:44] Speaker A: Wait for me. I'm coming to. Wait for me, I'm coming to. [00:01:54] Speaker B: Yeah, it's good. It's good. Hermes. Hermes is a little bit of a dick. The whole time he's like, look at. Look at Orpheus. He's poor. [00:02:04] Speaker A: He didn't move too fast for being a messenger. [00:02:06] Speaker B: Dude, dude, don't. Have you ever seen those? [00:02:08] Speaker A: Why is Hermes the storyteller? Like. I. I don't know. The background of the show. Is he known as someone that tells stories? [00:02:15] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:02:16] Speaker A: Is he on a bar in the Greek Bible? [00:02:18] Speaker B: I don't know. That. I do not know about. I do know that he. That. Andre de Shields, in a recent interview, says that no one will ever make him walk any faster than he intends to. And I. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Maybe that's when he's off work. That's what he does. He's running around all day. [00:02:35] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Yeah, it's great. And I kind of steampunk. [00:02:39] Speaker B: Yeah, it's awesome. [00:02:41] Speaker A: Costumes. [00:02:42] Speaker B: Costumes are great. The fates are bigger than they were gonna be. [00:02:46] Speaker A: Really? It's. It's good and like sad. Like an emotional moment when they're reunited. He sings. I sing a song so beautiful that the rocks pouted and cried. [00:02:57] Speaker B: I love. [00:02:57] Speaker A: I laughed out loud. It's good every time, but it's good. Yeah. It's so earnest. [00:03:02] Speaker B: It is. It's sad, though. Fucking. God damn it. Orpheus. [00:03:07] Speaker A: I didn't think it was that Sad, Really? No, because there's a hope. Because they retell it. Yeah, well, he's like, faded. He's like, those fates are in there messing with everybody. [00:03:18] Speaker B: Yeah, they're. They're buttholes. But it also. It also. [00:03:21] Speaker A: I mean, it's like Moulin Rouge. They gotta tell you the ending of the beginning because that is also based off Orpheus in the underworld is Moulin Rouge. And they, like, talk about that. That was like, what they based it off of. [00:03:32] Speaker B: Fuck, that's a good movie, too. I need to rewatch that. It's so fucking. [00:03:35] Speaker A: Think of it in the lens of Orpheus in the Underworld. Because Christian's like. His name's Christian. Her name's Satine, which is like Satan, if you think about it, with an E on it. And he goes to the underworld and falls in love with her and she dies. [00:03:48] Speaker B: Bing looks back being. Being married to a seamstress. I have heard the Satan Satin joke made at least twice. [00:03:56] Speaker A: A joke. That's why they've been named him. That. Baz Luhrmann thinks about these things, David. [00:04:01] Speaker B: I mean, I trust Baz Luhrmann. [00:04:03] Speaker A: This is our second episode. Like, five minutes in, we're doing a Baz Luhrmann talk. Because last episode we did Romeo and Juliet. [00:04:09] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Because we were talking about Swartz. I know, I know. I remember the trail that got us there, too. [00:04:16] Speaker A: Baz Luhrmann, I mean, he's like a top five filmmaker for me. He's one of my favorite. [00:04:19] Speaker B: He's fucking incredible. [00:04:21] Speaker A: All the movies are great. Yeah. Fucking Strictly Ballroom, his first movie. Really good. Do you. Dude, you would love that movie. [00:04:29] Speaker B: Okay. I bet I would. [00:04:30] Speaker A: You really would. It's like really, like. It's like a whole. It's like a homegrown Australian, like. Oh, nice farce comedy. And like, he has the talent of, like, Peter. He reminds me of Peter Jackson movies. It's not gory, but it's just a really good story. [00:04:43] Speaker B: Nice. [00:04:45] Speaker A: Then Romeo and Juliet. [00:04:46] Speaker B: Roman Juliet. Yeah. [00:04:47] Speaker A: Then Moulin Rouge. [00:04:50] Speaker B: Mulan Rouge. [00:04:52] Speaker A: After that, it was Australia, I believe. [00:04:57] Speaker B: I haven't seen Australia either. I know. I know they do. [00:05:00] Speaker A: They re edited it and added like [00:05:02] Speaker B: a. I was about to say they [00:05:03] Speaker A: turned it into a TV show. [00:05:04] Speaker B: I was about to say they turned it into a TV show. Yeah. [00:05:06] Speaker A: Far Way Down. [00:05:07] Speaker B: It's like a. It's like a reverse. A reverse. David lynch [00:05:13] Speaker A: did that with Hateful Eight. Also. They made it a miniseries. And it's. It's two episodes on Netflix. Exact One and Act Two. [00:05:19] Speaker B: Interesting. [00:05:20] Speaker A: There's that weird break where he narrates like the time pass. Oh, there's the intermission when I saw it in theaters. [00:05:25] Speaker B: Oh, Johnny. This is a perfect segue. I finally got around to watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. [00:05:32] Speaker A: Oh my God. So good movie. [00:05:37] Speaker B: Oh, man, I bet it would be. [00:05:39] Speaker A: Because it was. It's kind of his. It's his most earnest. It's his least like you like, grew up a little bit, I feel like. [00:05:48] Speaker B: Probably actually. Because I think, I think my second favorite would be fucking they Kill Hitler. Oh, Inglorious Bastards. That might be my second favorite. Although Targe, it's hard to discount the Bride and Uma Thurman. [00:06:11] Speaker A: Yeah. Bill Carradine. [00:06:13] Speaker B: Even though, I mean, even though Uma Thurman is the bride. I fucking love Uma Thurman. [00:06:17] Speaker A: There was, she is the bride. It was like she's like iconic in that. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Yeah, there's a, there was, there was a point in time where like Uma Thurman just was. And then the next year she was 15% hotter. And then the next year she was 15% hotter. And since that time she has gotten 15% hotter every fucking year. And I don't know how it happened. I don't know how she keeps getting more gorgeous. [00:06:42] Speaker A: Uma Oprah. But like, yeah. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. [00:06:46] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:06:46] Speaker A: So amazing. [00:06:47] Speaker B: So fucking good. I, I. [00:06:49] Speaker A: What do you thought? I mean, I could talk about it forever. So what do you want to say about it? [00:06:53] Speaker B: So it's been a very long time since I've been. I've willingly let myself watch something that made me feel as uncomfortable as Brad Pitt wandering around the Manson family. Don't do it, dude. Just go. Just leave. Just go. I was so worried. [00:07:14] Speaker A: I know. It's very well shot. It's very creepy. [00:07:16] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:17] Speaker A: It's like, it's like. You think he's gonna get murdered. [00:07:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:21] Speaker A: Those hippies ass God damn hippies. At the end he's running out of the two with the margarita blender. Yeah. [00:07:29] Speaker B: I love the like the random, like random flashbacks that come out of nowhere that you don't realize is a flashback until it ends. [00:07:38] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:38] Speaker B: Like of him sitting on the roof fixing the antenna and then him thinking about why he's there because he beat the shit out of Bruce Lee. [00:07:48] Speaker A: That scene was awesome. It was great actor played Bruce Lee was amazing. It was just a fun. It's just very funny the part. I always think, like I crack up the part when he's yelling at himself. It's like seven goddamn whiskey sours. He's yellow self in the mirror. You could have three or four. [00:08:09] Speaker B: That was. That was pretty good. That was pretty good. And like, oh, that just. I forgot that we were watching them making a movie and when Leo breaks and it's like lying, I was like, oh, what the is happening? [00:08:26] Speaker A: He's so good. Timothy Oliphant. I love him. [00:08:28] Speaker B: Yeah. It was such. It's just such a good movie and it, it. I like the, I guess spoilers for a seven year old movie now. I like the twists. That's like they have an Inglourious basterds that it's like history to a point and then it's not. And like when they decided to go into that house instead of the circumstances, I was just like, oh, oh shit. [00:08:54] Speaker A: Cliff's gonna kill them. Oh, the food and the drinks look so good in that movie. [00:09:03] Speaker B: Oh yeah. Oh yeah. [00:09:04] Speaker A: I wanted, I wanted shoots food and like beverages. Very well. [00:09:08] Speaker B: I wanted to. I wanted to be at those Mexican restaurants that they were. [00:09:12] Speaker A: Oh yeah. [00:09:14] Speaker B: I wanted to be at that bar that they met Al Pacino at. [00:09:17] Speaker A: Oh man, we hit the Bloody Mary. [00:09:19] Speaker B: Oh, that looks so good. [00:09:21] Speaker A: Yeah. Oh God, he's so. Al Pacino's great in that little part. Mr. Schwarz. If he's pronouncing his name wrong, Caleb Branham friend. Caleb Branham's favorite line is, they told me the fucking truth is what they told me. When he gets out of that meeting, he's crying. He's like, what's so wrong about beating spaghetti westerns? He's like, because they're spaghetti westerns. That's why. [00:09:45] Speaker B: No, it was, it was good. And you, you even spoiled the, the, the reveal at the end with the flamethrower. Yeah. And I totally forgot until he busted it out and I was like, whoa. [00:09:59] Speaker A: So I was in line for that movie opening weekend, Sunday, a guy walks out of the theater, sees a giant line, loudly says, I didn't expect the flamethrower to come back. [00:10:09] Speaker B: What a jerk. [00:10:10] Speaker A: What an. [00:10:11] Speaker B: What an absolute jerk. He got off on that. [00:10:13] Speaker A: Yeah. He probably masturbated that. Why would you do that? [00:10:16] Speaker B: So gross. But yeah, I, I love the. It's hot. Does it get. Does it cool down any? It's like it's a flamethrower. I was, I was expecting. [00:10:30] Speaker A: Because I've seen a kind of a hangout movie. Yeah. [00:10:34] Speaker B: The, the last sort of rash of Leo movies I've seen were Leo just being an absolute jerkwad. [00:10:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:10:43] Speaker B: And so I, I think I didn't watch it for the longest time. Because I thought that's what it was gonna be. Because Brad. [00:10:48] Speaker A: Brad Pitt all inside. [00:10:50] Speaker B: Yeah. Brad Pitt can also be a bit of a dickwad sometimes. But they were both just like, chill dudes, just hanging out, fucking doing shit, being friends. [00:10:59] Speaker A: Yeah, they're good friends. [00:11:00] Speaker B: They're good friends. Even though one works for the other, but still like. Like, Leo. Leo drunk, crying, being like, I'm not going to be able to pay you any more, Cliff. It's like, it got me. I was like, fuck. [00:11:14] Speaker A: It's like, that's it. It's over. But they got back and killed a [00:11:20] Speaker B: whole bunch of hippies. [00:11:23] Speaker A: He's on lsd, and he's like a dude. He is like a war hero. He like. Yeah. So there's a book that you should actually read. [00:11:30] Speaker B: Okay. [00:11:31] Speaker A: I got the mass market paperback, but he. Quentin Tarantino wrote his first book. It was the novelization of that, and it's. It tells it in a different way. And so there's a lot more expanded stuff, but, like, Liv Booth, like, kill. It's the most confirmed knife kills in world war. In whatever war he was in. [00:11:45] Speaker B: Nice. I might. [00:11:48] Speaker A: I'm get the mass market paperback used. Is it still available? I made one that premiered. [00:11:55] Speaker B: It looks like I can get it for five bucks from Thrift Books. [00:11:58] Speaker A: Get it. It's a mass market. [00:12:02] Speaker B: Oh, man. Fucking missed the mass market. The. A new Barnes and Opal opened not too far from us. And Wanda was like, we should. We should. We should ride bikes out to the Barnes and Noble. And then was like, oh, shit. Every book is, like, $30. And I was like, [00:12:20] Speaker A: you know, books ain't 30 bucks. And they're fine books. [00:12:24] Speaker B: They're fine. They're mighty fine. [00:12:26] Speaker A: The Spawn universe titles we have before us tonight. [00:12:29] Speaker B: Forgot what they were doing. Spawn. [00:12:32] Speaker A: I. I pull time up in the corner. I was like, I'm gonna segue to Spawn before we hit 15 minutes. And we are just about there. [00:12:39] Speaker B: Nice. [00:12:42] Speaker A: We have two fine titles tonight. [00:12:44] Speaker B: Pretty good. [00:12:44] Speaker A: We've been in the, like, a lot of the main series. We're, like, a few months behind, but, like, been the McFarland slog. But you get a good rider in there. [00:12:52] Speaker B: Oh, it's. [00:12:53] Speaker A: Baby. [00:12:53] Speaker B: It's amazing. It's amazing. [00:12:56] Speaker A: I was, like, talking to it and, like, being like, what? Whoa. [00:12:59] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, shit. [00:13:01] Speaker A: These. [00:13:01] Speaker B: These two fucking rock. They're good. [00:13:04] Speaker A: I mean, we can go on record. These are. This is our favorite. This is my favorite duo that we do. [00:13:09] Speaker B: Yeah, definitely. And I'm really fucking sad that we've only got three More after this as this duo. [00:13:17] Speaker A: Why? [00:13:17] Speaker B: Cuz Rhett city ended at 25. [00:13:19] Speaker A: It's over. [00:13:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Apparently. [00:13:22] Speaker A: Realize that. [00:13:23] Speaker B: Yeah, that's sad. [00:13:31] Speaker A: We'll play tabs. [00:13:31] Speaker B: Yeah, we will. Definitely. [00:13:33] Speaker A: It'll be Tap city, single code. Spoiler alert. But we are respawn where each week we bring you two issues from sponsor universe. Except when we don't. This week is no different. We also talk about Once upon. I'm in Hollywood because David just saw it. Yes. And we have two issues from sponsor universe, our favorite miniseries we're on right now. We just submitted it, so we're on record. Yes, it is call. It's time to. You know. David, did you check your watch? [00:14:00] Speaker B: Did I check my watch just now? [00:14:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Why? [00:14:02] Speaker A: Why is it not flashing? Call. Learner and row. [00:14:06] Speaker B: Because it's 2, 2, 2, 22, 22. [00:14:10] Speaker A: Because we got Sam Switch 22. Wait, I'm doing the wrong order. [00:14:14] Speaker B: The wrong order. That's fine. [00:14:16] Speaker A: We got rat City, number 22. [00:14:18] Speaker B: Number 22. [00:14:19] Speaker A: Sam and Twitch, number 22. [00:14:21] Speaker B: So follow up. [00:14:21] Speaker A: Learner and Row. [00:14:22] Speaker B: 2, 2, 2, 22, 22. Lawyers in Chicago, some ambulance ass chasers. [00:14:28] Speaker A: Yeah. And their number is called 2-222-22. That's their song. [00:14:32] Speaker B: That's it. It's insane. Everybody knows. [00:14:37] Speaker A: What's the area code? [00:14:39] Speaker B: I'm assuming it's a. Probably a three. One, two, three one two. [00:14:41] Speaker A: Yeah, three one two. Because the two starts early. [00:14:44] Speaker B: Yeah. Because. Yeah, but they. They conveniently leave that out of the jingle because it would mess up the. It's not going to be area code 222. What's area code 222? [00:14:55] Speaker A: The great song called 222222. [00:15:01] Speaker B: Area code 222 belongs to Maritania, a country in Africa. [00:15:08] Speaker A: So [00:15:10] Speaker B: Learner and Ro definitely aren't going to have an area code 222. [00:15:14] Speaker A: Maybe if they route the number. [00:15:15] Speaker B: Maybe. [00:15:19] Speaker A: So first up we have rat City. [00:15:21] Speaker B: Huh? [00:15:22] Speaker A: 22, 25. I didn't know this. [00:15:25] Speaker B: Really? [00:15:26] Speaker A: No. [00:15:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Sad day. [00:15:30] Speaker A: I don't keep up with the. [00:15:32] Speaker B: It's so hard to keep up with anything. I don't keep up with the trades either. I see. I see. Random. Random news. There was a whole bunch of random. [00:15:42] Speaker A: Todd McFarlane was talking in an interview how they're gonna make a gunslinger spawn and a medieval spawn. Like maybe a TV show. [00:15:49] Speaker B: All of. All of the things that came out of his conversations at San Diego here. It's just like, Jesus. What Jesus? What Jesus? Like. Like they said that. He said that. They're sitting on a basically almost finished Spawn animated movie. And by almost finished, he means they have. They have. Oh, what's it called? They have a storyboard, and then they have the voice actors. They've. Guy who played Spawn and guy who played Luke Skywalker. [00:16:22] Speaker A: What? [00:16:23] Speaker B: Who are their names? Keith David and Mark Hamill. Mark Hamill, yes. [00:16:28] Speaker A: Mark Hamill's the clown. [00:16:31] Speaker B: I think so. Probably. [00:16:32] Speaker A: I mean, that's. But he was the Joker. That's not fair. I don't. I don't know. [00:16:36] Speaker B: They didn't go with. He's just said that he had those two people. [00:16:39] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm sure he does. I'm sure he met him at a comic con, and they're like, yeah, sure, Todd, call me. [00:16:43] Speaker B: Although. Although Keith David videos floating around of what's one of the favorite things you've ever done? And he always brings up having done Spawn. [00:16:53] Speaker A: Spawn. Why wouldn't you? [00:16:54] Speaker B: Why wouldn't you? I mean. And that is. [00:16:57] Speaker A: These are Spawnless issues, though. [00:16:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:59] Speaker A: Why are you talking about Al Simmons? [00:17:01] Speaker B: It's a habit. [00:17:04] Speaker A: AI Simmons. [00:17:08] Speaker B: Johnny, I think you need to. I think you need to run with that. You need to write a pitch for a new book called AI Simmons. [00:17:16] Speaker A: Oh, God help me. It's all written by AI, [00:17:20] Speaker B: I'm sure. [00:17:21] Speaker A: Written by AI is Rat City 22. And I have the A cover. [00:17:26] Speaker B: Nice. I also have VA cover. [00:17:29] Speaker A: This one. [00:17:30] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. Yeah. [00:17:33] Speaker A: It is the deviant on, like, a. [00:17:35] Speaker B: The Yildiray Sennar cover. [00:17:38] Speaker A: A saddle. Like a. Like a ledge. Like a spire of Rat City. [00:17:42] Speaker B: Yeah. It actually kind of looks like. Like a weird anime mech gun or like. Like a satellite that's just burst out of its container. Yeah, but some sort. [00:18:00] Speaker A: He's kind of, like, riding it like a. Like a sailor. Yeah, yeah, like Jack Sparrow or Jack. Aubrey. Don't play the marching band version, Okay? [00:18:13] Speaker B: I won't wink. [00:18:15] Speaker A: You could. [00:18:16] Speaker B: I am editing. [00:18:17] Speaker A: I remember one time you edited the episode, and I was like, what is that? [00:18:20] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:18:21] Speaker A: I think I was like, I don't understand. I like that song. I don't know. I can't recognize it. [00:18:28] Speaker B: That was. That was 2000. 2004. Magic of Orlando. RIP Magic of Orlando. [00:18:35] Speaker A: Okay, well, I'm sorry. I got your yum, Dave. [00:18:41] Speaker B: That's okay. Not everyone's as big of a nerd as I am, Johnny. It's fine. [00:18:46] Speaker A: There's a lot of people that are bigger. [00:18:47] Speaker B: Probably finals. Finals of this weekend, though. Oh, boy. [00:18:50] Speaker A: You own property and have a wife, so you're doing okay. [00:18:54] Speaker B: But I do have double digits of Dogs. I have a spot. [00:19:01] Speaker A: Did you see that Linda Blair got arrested? [00:19:03] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:19:04] Speaker A: For having, like, running a kennel. Having too many dogs. [00:19:11] Speaker B: Man, I make. I make zero money from these dogs. [00:19:16] Speaker A: I don't think she did either. [00:19:19] Speaker B: Yeah. Insane wild 100. 100 dogs is a lot, though. [00:19:25] Speaker A: That was a lot. [00:19:26] Speaker B: We. I have. We have. [00:19:27] Speaker A: It's enough to make your head spin. [00:19:32] Speaker B: You're not the only one vomiting in that situation. [00:19:35] Speaker A: Pea green suit. You know what's crazy is, like, I just always assumed Max Von Sadow is old. And, like, he's been old since the Exorcist, but he's wearing makeup. He wasn't that old. [00:19:49] Speaker B: It's magic in the movies, Johnny. [00:19:52] Speaker A: That's weird. [00:19:53] Speaker B: You know what, Johnny? I've learned something recently. [00:19:56] Speaker A: What? [00:19:57] Speaker B: I love the movies. [00:19:59] Speaker A: What, you like? The movies are back. [00:20:01] Speaker B: Maybe the movies. [00:20:02] Speaker A: Spider man is the biggest movie of all time, man. [00:20:04] Speaker B: It's been a. It's been a good year for movies. I've. I've only seen one movie in theaters this year so far, and it was Mandalorian and Grogu. [00:20:17] Speaker A: But you're like, good year for movies. [00:20:20] Speaker B: I enjoyed. I enjoyed the hell out of. [00:20:22] Speaker A: Yeah, it was fun. [00:20:23] Speaker B: Mandalorian and Grogu. And then the second movie I'm gonna see in theaters this year is 50 years old, Mothra versus Godzilla. [00:20:33] Speaker A: When are you going to that? [00:20:35] Speaker B: August 30th. [00:20:37] Speaker A: Nice. [00:20:38] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm getting the shirt, too. [00:20:41] Speaker A: I'm going to Texas Chainsaw for Texas Chainsaw Day, I guess, which exists. Which is August 18th. [00:20:47] Speaker B: Nice. [00:20:48] Speaker A: They're showing the 4k of the original at AMC20. [00:20:51] Speaker B: Hell, yeah. [00:20:52] Speaker A: Got sick tickets. Rolling deep with me, Megan. Shout out. James. Doty. [00:20:59] Speaker B: Nice. [00:20:59] Speaker A: Future guests, maybe. Who knows his wife, Rachel. [00:21:03] Speaker B: Nice. [00:21:04] Speaker A: And then past and future guest Tom Hunt will be there. [00:21:08] Speaker B: Sounds like. It sounds like the. The new. The new Brady Bunch theme song. The new Brady is the story of a guy named Johnny who wanted to [00:21:18] Speaker A: take people to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Have you seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre? [00:21:25] Speaker B: Yes, a long time ago. [00:21:26] Speaker A: Oh, my God. Get out of here. It's amazing. It's not bloody. It's not what you think. [00:21:34] Speaker B: It's tense as hell. [00:21:37] Speaker A: There's tense parts. There's really funny parts, too. [00:21:39] Speaker B: It's very. It's very that the action happens in the white spaces between the lines. [00:21:47] Speaker A: When he runs out and hits her, that hammer is, like, so one of the scariest things to me ever. [00:21:50] Speaker B: I should probably rewatch it. I think I would enjoy it more now than I did the first time. I saw it because it was. Also, I felt like I had to watch it before I could finally watch the remake, which is the one I wanted to watch. [00:22:02] Speaker A: What? Just oogle at Jessica Biel's midriff. [00:22:06] Speaker B: Just because it was the newer version, Johnny, that meant it was better. [00:22:10] Speaker A: Oh, boy. Anyway, the newer version of the COVID is cover B by Vaughn Randall. [00:22:17] Speaker B: And it's a good cover, too. It's. It's the deviant in the. The Matrix gun locker. [00:22:25] Speaker A: Really? My phone's all the way over there. [00:22:29] Speaker B: Yeah, it's the deviant in a room that's got a whole bunch of guns on the wall, and then he's got a big old fucking gun and he's walking toward the viewer. [00:22:37] Speaker A: Okay, see, now. Now I know what it feels like to be a listener when we describe the covers. [00:22:42] Speaker B: Oh, nice. It's wonderful. Is it. Does it. Does it paint a beautiful picture in your mind, Johnny? [00:22:47] Speaker A: It reminds me that Mr. Show sketch where he's shown in the comic book, this guy, like, volunteers reading Calvin and Hobbes to blind people over the phone. But the joke is it's a hotline for people with disabilities to volunteer their time to make other people feel better. This guy's like. It's like. It's like David Cross, he's this big stockbroker. He's like, yeah, hold on, I gotta give this some of my time. And he's like, you gotta make him feel better. So, like, he lets. He lets David Cross or Bob Odenkirk call him and read him Calvin Hobbs every day to make Bob Odenkirk feel better. It's like a volunteer hotline for people with disabilities to make normal people feel better. [00:23:28] Speaker B: Is the sketch interesting? I've not seen. I've not seen a single episode of Mr. Show. [00:23:35] Speaker A: You would love it. [00:23:36] Speaker B: I've. I've heard that. I also have a friend who says that the worst thing that ever came out of Mr. Show was tenacious D. And so I don't. [00:23:45] Speaker A: I don't know, come out of this show, really? Who hates Tenacious D? [00:23:50] Speaker B: My. My friend. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna say his name on the podcast because then we'll never get him on here. [00:23:56] Speaker A: What did he. [00:23:59] Speaker B: He just doesn't like Jack Black, was it? [00:24:01] Speaker A: Why did he look. Does he look like him? [00:24:04] Speaker B: No. He did look. Absolutely not. He just doesn't like his comic sensibility. He said fuck his wife or something. [00:24:11] Speaker A: Or his girlfriend. I don't know. [00:24:12] Speaker B: I don't know, Johnny. [00:24:14] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:24:14] Speaker B: He Just doesn't like him. And that's fine. That's about. That's about. That's valid. [00:24:18] Speaker A: No, it's not. [00:24:19] Speaker B: You don't have to. You don't have to like every celebrity. I think it's foolhardy to not like Jack Black, because, I mean, fucking. It's fucking Jack Black. Come on. Yeah, we should probably get talking about these books, Johnny, we're almost 30 minutes in. [00:24:35] Speaker A: This is not my fault. [00:24:39] Speaker B: Let's crack open. Let's crack open these two covers that we've just talked about, Johnny, see what's going on. [00:24:44] Speaker A: Let's give credit where credit is due. [00:24:46] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:24:47] Speaker A: Script plot by Erica Schultz. Art by Zay Carlos. Color by J. David Ramos. Lettering by Erica Schultz. Cover artist. We already covered the covers. [00:24:55] Speaker B: Sure did. [00:24:56] Speaker A: Creative director is one Mr. Todd McFarlane. And editor in chief is one Mr. Next issue writer that we're going to cover in this episode. Writer Mr. Thomas. [00:25:11] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. [00:25:12] Speaker A: The man, the myth, the legend, hardest [00:25:13] Speaker B: working man in show business. [00:25:15] Speaker A: Well, it's like. I mean, I don't know how many corporates at old TMP listens to this, but it's like, Todd's running it, but, like, Thomas, he's really kind of the secret Kevin Feige be like, okay, Todd, you want to take a step back. That's good. And, like, pat them on the back, and we'll, like, hopefully, like, get more power and, like, obviously has been. But he feels more like the good stuff. Feels like it's under his wing a little bit. You know what I'm saying? [00:25:46] Speaker B: Are you saying. Are you saying Todd McFarlane is the Miss Piggy and Thomas Healey is the Kermit the Frog? [00:25:55] Speaker A: I guess, yes. I'm trying to think of a better analogy. [00:26:07] Speaker B: That's a ready analogy because I'm always thinking about the Muppets, so. [00:26:12] Speaker A: I love the Muppets. [00:26:12] Speaker B: I love the Muppets. Muppets are great. [00:26:15] Speaker A: They are. They've been mistreated over the years. [00:26:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:26:20] Speaker A: What do you mean, man? Yeah. You ever watching, like, Office, like, four Adult show where, like, Miss Piggy's, like, people and it's sucks. [00:26:29] Speaker B: Yeah. But it's still Muppet content. So that's. That's. That's where I'm at, Johnny. I'm just here for the Muppet content, you know? [00:26:38] Speaker A: It was really good. Was the second of the reboots. The. It was better than the first one. The. [00:26:43] Speaker B: The Muppets Most Wanted. [00:26:45] Speaker A: Yes. That movie is really good. The songs are good. My nephew is obsessed with it. [00:26:50] Speaker B: Nice. Yeah. It's good as hell. I mean, I watched. I watched the. The Muppet wizard of Oz is the worst Muppet movie. It's probably the worst movie of all time. But. But it allows Pepe the King Prawn to just like. [00:27:10] Speaker A: Who's he? Totally. [00:27:12] Speaker B: He's. Yeah. Except for. Except for he's. He's Pepe the King Prawn. And maybe he'll give us a lot of money. Okay. I. I love Pepe. I know. Pepe is probably a sex pest. [00:27:25] Speaker A: Oh, definitely. That's okay. It's so funny. [00:27:31] Speaker B: Oh, I love Pepe. [00:27:34] Speaker A: Well, Johnny, my favorite Muppet. What's your favorite Muppet? [00:27:37] Speaker B: Oh, geez. [00:27:38] Speaker A: Favorite number one. [00:27:42] Speaker B: We talking like current or like, has any. [00:27:45] Speaker A: Any Muppet? [00:27:48] Speaker B: It's probably animal. [00:27:51] Speaker A: Really? [00:27:52] Speaker B: Animal. Eat drums. No, beat drums. Beat drums. [00:27:57] Speaker A: I like the animal and. [00:27:58] Speaker B: Whoa, man. How is that not. How is that not gold? John? [00:28:05] Speaker A: I'm a Kermit guy. [00:28:06] Speaker B: Kermit's fucking good. [00:28:08] Speaker A: He's. He's. He's a good hearted man who gets stressed out in his anger issues. We will say Kermit doesn't get stressed out and has anger issues. He's a good hearted man and he is like always melancholy. [00:28:22] Speaker B: The problem is Johnny. [00:28:23] Speaker A: He's always. He's always melancholy. I always feel for Kermit. He's in charge of a lot of. [00:28:29] Speaker B: I. I am Kermit. [00:28:31] Speaker A: No, you're not. [00:28:33] Speaker B: You're fuzzy. How am I Fozzie? [00:28:36] Speaker A: That's my favorite. Which Muppet I am probably a mix of Kermit and Gonzo, I think, mixed with Kermit. [00:28:44] Speaker B: I think I'm definitely a Kermit. [00:28:46] Speaker A: Although when I took Fozzie mixed with Ralph mixed with Beaker. [00:28:51] Speaker B: Okay, well, the problem is, when I took the Buzzfeed quiz of which Muppet are you? I got Sam Eagle, and that just made me despondent. [00:28:59] Speaker A: You're Sam the Eagle. That sucks. I would say you are. You are Beaker mixed with Beaker Fi. Ralph. [00:29:14] Speaker B: I mean, I'll take that. I'll take that. Maybe with a little bit of Sweetums thrown in. Just because big you are a little like Sweden. Yes. You are Jack Nut name Jack job. [00:29:24] Speaker A: I like Sweedoms. [00:29:25] Speaker B: Yeah. I also, when I took the which Sesame street character are you? It gave me Ernie. Or not Ernie. Bert. It gave me Bert. And you're a little birdish. I'm. I'm so Bert. It pissed me off. It pissed me off so much to know that I was Burt. [00:29:40] Speaker A: Surprising no one. I'm an Ernie. This should be respawn with Bert and Ernie. You put our pictures up and like, this is Bert Ernie now. [00:29:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:29:48] Speaker A: And they have a podcast [00:29:52] Speaker B: and you still have your little. You have a little. Little rubber ducky. And I'm just over here giving you. [00:29:58] Speaker A: I have a rubber sharkie. [00:29:59] Speaker B: Oh, nice. [00:30:00] Speaker A: It was just shark and I went to Outback one night and they had a drink with. Came with a shark. [00:30:05] Speaker B: Oh, nice. [00:30:06] Speaker A: Red, like, I don't know, cherry juice. And you like, pour the blood in the blue drink. I saw the shark. [00:30:11] Speaker B: Nice. Sharks are cool. [00:30:13] Speaker A: How to get it. [00:30:15] Speaker B: Have I asked you. Have I asked you on podcast, Johnny, what your favorite shark is? [00:30:18] Speaker A: Yes. [00:30:18] Speaker B: Okay. [00:30:19] Speaker A: Four times. I'm not gonna answer. Okay, go back and listen if you want to find out. My favorite shark. Rat city number 22 opens with the financial district now. [00:30:34] Speaker B: And we got somebody with a thumb drive. They got some pretty cool nails. They slip it to someone named Victoria. They say, are you sure about this? Victoria says, trust me. And then the. The one who was holding the thumb drive is like, how did I let you talk me into this? I've never even heard of the Yan Moon Corporation. Are you sure we can trust them? And Victoria's like, she says, but if. And then. And then in this, they're obviously doing a little bit of espionage and Victoria is taking the chance to shoot her shot because apparently Victoria and Brenda, the other individual, once had a thing and Brenda was like, you are not trying to get back together. We broke up. [00:31:31] Speaker A: Remember when we covered Rat city number like 4 or 5? She. When Victoria first shows up, I have a crush on her. So. Yeah, I'm profoundly disappointed. [00:31:41] Speaker B: Sucks to be you, Johnny. Or maybe this means that you still have a shot because she's not getting [00:31:48] Speaker A: back with her ex single. She's single. [00:31:49] Speaker B: She's single. [00:31:51] Speaker A: We've all seen Chasing Amy. [00:31:53] Speaker B: It doesn't. It doesn't. She doesn't spell out her proclivities in this. [00:31:59] Speaker A: It's true. I'm sorry I'm being horny on Main, but people like that. It's charming when we're horny on Main, right? [00:32:06] Speaker B: I. I guess. I don't know. Do people think we're charming? Anyway, that's. That's the question, John. [00:32:13] Speaker A: All. Yeah, they're exes and they're going to, like a. It reminds me of, like, the crime syndicates in, like, solo. They're like, going to a meeting. [00:32:25] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:32:25] Speaker A: Shadow Broker. [00:32:27] Speaker B: Yeah, but it's at a fancy restauran. Like, it's very. It's very the Obi Wan club at the Beginning of Temple of Doom. Oh. [00:32:35] Speaker A: Oh. I mean, what a great club. He's a really small guy. [00:32:45] Speaker B: And so Victoria and Brenda meet up with. So Brenda is Dr. Nomics. [00:32:53] Speaker A: Yes, Brendan Nomix. [00:32:55] Speaker B: They meet Jing Su, head of recruitment for Yan Moon, and. And Jing says that Victoria has told her so much about Brenda, Dr. Nomics and the incredible work that she's done at BTS. [00:33:14] Speaker A: There's a hiring. She's like, I heard there was a hiring freeze when, you know, what's his name? Old. [00:33:19] Speaker B: Old Chairman died. [00:33:20] Speaker A: Chairman died? Yeah. Old Christian Diaper. [00:33:22] Speaker B: Yeah. C Spawn. Rat City. Number 10. [00:33:26] Speaker A: Good callback, like, 12 issues ago. This book is amazing. I don't know, I'm, like, reading this and, like, how this issue starts with the situation where right now is like, this is awesome. It just pays off like gangbusters because there's been. There's been, like, you know, six to 20 characters that are, like, named and, like, they're all, like, coming back and, like, intersecting and, like, creating a really cool world. I just. I thought this issue was very well done. [00:33:50] Speaker B: Mm. It's. It's wonderful. [00:33:55] Speaker A: So I love an underworld club. I love a cyberpunk club. [00:33:59] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:34:00] Speaker A: You know what I mean? [00:34:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:34:01] Speaker A: It's awesome because you gotta, like, you know, you gotta go buy, like, neon cocaine or whatever, you know, whatever they do in cyberpunk things. [00:34:09] Speaker B: It's a. It's a place that there's an analog that exists currently that I'm not cool enough to find. And sort of the. The cyberpunk equivalent of that would be infinitely cooler than the one that already exists. So, like, being allowed in there is [00:34:25] Speaker A: just like, whoa, what's the cantina? So cool. It's like if. Like. Like if you walk into the weird biker bar in some parts of Tulsa. [00:34:33] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:34:34] Speaker A: Probably the record would stop. Like, the cantina when Luke walks in with two droids. [00:34:37] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:34:38] Speaker A: Whoa. This guy's. This fucking. This fucking suburb kicks bringing in two droids. Doesn't he know the rules? [00:34:44] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. It's intense. [00:34:48] Speaker A: No droids. You ever think about the world building behind that? Like, how brilliant that is? [00:34:55] Speaker B: But the people are racist against droids. [00:34:57] Speaker A: No, but, like, there's a whole backstory. Like, Wuher, like, hates droids because they killed his family or something. I can't remember. At least an old canon, but the whole idea, like, because they can record everything. [00:35:09] Speaker B: Mm. Ah. [00:35:10] Speaker A: Like, no droids. It's just a camera. [00:35:14] Speaker B: Makes sense. [00:35:16] Speaker A: We don't serve their kind here. Your droids. We'll have to wait outside, [00:35:21] Speaker B: Dang. Slack. So Jing and Brenda are talking about, you know, sort of her lapse in employment from PTS for reasons. And Ging is trying to get, you know, information from Brenda and Brenda can kind of tell that she's kind of slowly being needled for information. I really like. I really like how she calls her [00:35:53] Speaker A: out that she doesn't have any moms. [00:35:55] Speaker B: Yeah. I also really like sort of the character of her fiddling with her. Fiddling with her straw and like she's pointing with it. [00:36:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:36:05] Speaker B: It's a good characterization and very Tarantino esque. Yeah. And Victoria's like getting a little embarrassed. She's like, Brenda, stop it. [00:36:17] Speaker A: She's not gonna be. Brenda's not gonna be bullied by this. Jung Moon Jingxu. No, the moon. [00:36:25] Speaker B: Oh Yan Moon. [00:36:29] Speaker A: She's not gonna be bullied by this Yawn Moon. [00:36:31] Speaker B: No. [00:36:32] Speaker A: And then all sudden the news comes out about the bridge attack. [00:36:36] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:36:37] Speaker A: That we witnessed. [00:36:38] Speaker B: Yeah. And they, they say who was John Kingman, former Marine, a part of the PTS program for injured service members. [00:36:46] Speaker A: He was the one that got helped by the little girls everyday carry. [00:36:52] Speaker B: Mm. Yep. Yep. She had bandages for everything and. [00:36:58] Speaker A: Oh Fuck. [00:36:59] Speaker B: Yeah. And Dr. Dr. NoMics has a nice little flashback. [00:37:03] Speaker A: Whatever. Your work makes the news. [00:37:05] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:37:06] Speaker A: Not great, like usually. Yeah, yeah. It's like a blanket statement. This is like the best place to work ever. [00:37:18] Speaker B: Mine. My workplace has made the news a couple of times. [00:37:21] Speaker A: My current work organization locally made the news and specifically the building I work out of. [00:37:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:37:29] Speaker A: Nothing to do with me, but we made the news. [00:37:31] Speaker B: Yeah. It's always very weird. [00:37:35] Speaker A: But you know, also the local news, which I love to watch, I'm obsessed with. I mean, you know, I love the Today show. [00:37:42] Speaker B: David. Mm. [00:37:44] Speaker A: But I love a local broadcast. Like you can just find out about things you would never heard of. And like that's. I, I used to, I still, I still often. Because the late night. I haven't found a good late night radio station in Tulsa. But like I still often like if I'm falling asleep with headphones because I love falling asleep with noise, I often fall asleep to go live feed at WGN Chicago, one of the best stations of all time. And I always listen to the AM on the real radio, but that lulled me to sleep. And they like talk shows and news at like 6 o' clock on Sunday they have a Lutheran church service. [00:38:22] Speaker B: Oh, nice. [00:38:23] Speaker A: They have a news magazine about Chicago like five in the morning on Sunday. They've local content all day. [00:38:30] Speaker B: So what you're saying is you're probably more informed about local goings on here than I am. [00:38:35] Speaker A: Yeah. What I'm saying is you should listen to WGN Chicago. [00:38:39] Speaker B: Probably should. Probably should. But who's listening to whom now? John Kingman is listening to Dr. Nomics. Because he's in a flashback here. [00:38:52] Speaker A: Yep. [00:38:52] Speaker B: Fiddling with his new prosthetics. And he's like, what is. What is. What is this thing? It's fucking. It's fucking weird. And she's like, ah, you'll be weird. You'll be fine. And he's like, geez. Like, the service doesn't really, you know, prepare you for getting hurt. [00:39:05] Speaker A: I'm sure you'll be fine. But she doesn't dismiss him. She's like. Gets scolded for helping him. [00:39:09] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But she's trying. She's trying to help him out because, you know, he's. He's a wounded vet, and he's like, I don't know. I don't know what the I'm doing. And then Dr. Bose comes in and is like, no, Max, what are you doing? You're not authorized to be with these patients. She's like, I'm just. Just trying to. Trying to help. Just trying to help. And he's like, get. Get. Go get. What a jerk. What a jerk. [00:39:33] Speaker A: Shitty box. Shitty boss. You have enough of your own work to complete. What a dick. [00:39:40] Speaker B: Yeah, he's a jerk. [00:39:41] Speaker A: So we're back to the bar where the news broadcast is playing that he's the King's king. What's his name? Kingsman. King, Kingman, Kingman. Just attack the bridge. [00:39:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:39:54] Speaker A: This is like, damn. Shit. [00:39:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:39:59] Speaker A: And she just, like, palms the USB drive. [00:40:02] Speaker B: Yeah. And she slips out the back while everybody's distracted by the tv. And then when Victoria and Ging notice, Ging is very upset. [00:40:13] Speaker A: Victorious, basically. We're gonna kill her. [00:40:16] Speaker B: Yeah, you're the. You said she was your asset. You said you had her under control. [00:40:22] Speaker A: Said, look, whatever, but if you hurt her, I'm gonna fucking kill you. [00:40:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:40:29] Speaker A: Then we cut to the two jabronis [00:40:32] Speaker B: who are looking for Q, and it's [00:40:35] Speaker A: all that cue ball news. [00:40:36] Speaker B: Yeah. And they're stuck in traffic. [00:40:40] Speaker A: Classic. Yeah. [00:40:42] Speaker B: Complaining about the traffic via like. You think Quinlan's worth all this, Steve? Oh, it was like the way. The way they disrespected us. Hell yeah, it's worth it. Wow. [00:40:57] Speaker A: Maybe. [00:40:57] Speaker B: Maybe don't hold the grudge, dude. And then the bridge starts to collapse. And then they spew. Car falls off the side of the bridge. And then we see Quinlan in, like, a liminal space. [00:41:13] Speaker A: Ooh, speaking of little spaces. [00:41:15] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:41:16] Speaker A: Have you watched the Back Rooms yet? [00:41:17] Speaker B: I have not. [00:41:18] Speaker A: You're gonna love it, dude. [00:41:19] Speaker B: Okay, I bet I will. [00:41:21] Speaker A: It's the best movie of the year. [00:41:23] Speaker B: Awesome. [00:41:23] Speaker A: So far. [00:41:25] Speaker B: And Quinlan's just like, what? What? What's this? What? What? What? And then Reese shows up. Quinn. Reese says, hey, Quinn. Or, hi, Quinn. And Quinn goes, rhys, your hands. You're whole. [00:41:38] Speaker A: You're whole. [00:41:41] Speaker B: He is handsome. Yes, indeed. [00:41:43] Speaker A: Look at that. [00:41:43] Speaker B: Look at that smile. How could you? How could you resist that smile? [00:41:47] Speaker A: You can. [00:41:49] Speaker B: So they. They kiss. They both say they missed each other. And Quinn's like, come on, let's get out of here. And Reese is like, you're not. You're not ready to be here, Quinn. You gotta. You gotta go back. You can't. You can't stay with me this time. Your time will come. But not now. And then we go back to Quinn, like, sinking in water. [00:42:16] Speaker A: It's great. This great image of, like, after the disaster, of all the cars in the water and people drowning. [00:42:23] Speaker B: And Kizzy. Kizzy grabs Quinn's hand and pulls them up. [00:42:28] Speaker A: And I like the color of the water. [00:42:30] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a good color. Like, the car's just sinking in it. And we get a. We get a nice. Nice little bonding between Kizzy and Q here. Good. And then. Then we cut back to those. Those dudes who are after Quinn. And they're. They're also just, like, floating around in the water. One of them sitting on, like, one of the pylons for the bridge. Like, son of a bitch, it's Cue Ball. I got him. And he tries to shoot at Quinn, and gun doesn't work. It just goes splutter. And so they. They jump back in the water to swim after them. And Quinn's like, shit, Kizzy, we gotta go swim faster. And then while Kizzy and Quinn are swimming away from these. These goons, like, police hover. Hela doodads come over, and they're like, everybody, stay calm. Just stay where you are. We'll give you flirtation devices. Then people start fighting over the flotation devices. And then the police go over by where Kizzy and Quinn are about to reach the shore. And they're like, no, no, no, you gotta stay over there with everybody else. You gotta stay there until you can be rescued. And Kizzy says, we don't need your bullshit rescue. And they dive. And then we cut to the inside of the police helicopter. And one of them was like, little shits. His partner Says orders are to bring him back alive. Then we see a guy jump out in scuba gear. He says, no problem. [00:44:08] Speaker A: This is going to be like the Ninja Turtles NES game. Underwater level. [00:44:12] Speaker B: Oh, nice. [00:44:13] Speaker A: That level suck. Did you have that game? [00:44:17] Speaker B: I did not, no. [00:44:18] Speaker A: Did you have any? Yes. [00:44:20] Speaker B: The first video game console I had was a Nintendo Wii. And I got it my sophomore year of college. [00:44:25] Speaker A: I thought your sister had a PlayStation. [00:44:26] Speaker B: She had a PlayStation, yeah. But there was. She had three games for it and I wasn't allowed to play it so. [00:44:33] Speaker A: Ever. [00:44:34] Speaker B: Not unless she was sitting there watching me. And that happened like maybe twice. [00:44:41] Speaker A: What was your favorite game on the Wii? [00:44:46] Speaker B: Fucking Mario Kart. [00:44:48] Speaker A: That's a good game. [00:44:48] Speaker B: It's a good game. [00:44:49] Speaker A: The mall level. Sunshine Mall. [00:44:52] Speaker B: That was. Yeah, it's very good. I liked that the. Because since I didn't grow up with video games, every time I tried to play a racing game I would always be like. And it would never. It never did anything until the Wii. And so I liked the fact that it was like, ah, intuitive. [00:45:10] Speaker A: That's fun. [00:45:11] Speaker B: See, I've always been an old man, Johnny. [00:45:14] Speaker A: We know. And that's the end of the issue. We get the spawn scolder in the issue. We got our new generation, new stories, new you. I just took your line, David. [00:45:24] Speaker B: Yes, you sure did. [00:45:27] Speaker A: And by it I mean you can suck my grits. [00:45:32] Speaker B: So you've got butter or sugar on those. [00:45:36] Speaker A: It's up to you. [00:45:39] Speaker B: I'm gonna, I'm gonna go. [00:45:40] Speaker A: I'm gonna go with. [00:45:40] Speaker B: But I'm gonna go with butter. I like a savory grit. I love sugar, but I like a [00:45:44] Speaker A: savory it half and half. [00:45:48] Speaker B: If I'm going to have sweet, I'm going to have oatmeal. My bother. My bother with grits if I'm going to make them sweet. Okay, but you know what? I would prefer biscuits and gravy. [00:45:59] Speaker A: Yeah, David. I get to enjoy mom's biscuits and gravy at least like once or twice every two weeks. [00:46:07] Speaker B: You son of a. [00:46:08] Speaker A: It's 6:30 in the morning and it hits every time. [00:46:11] Speaker B: Hate you so goddamn much right now. I can't believe I'm. I can't believe I'm still talking to you. It's a testament to the strength of our friendship, Johnny. [00:46:19] Speaker A: I get the country back. It's like 4.96. And you get scrambled eggs, a biscuit. You basically get a sandwich, deconstructed hash browns, ambiscus and gravy and a coffee. [00:46:32] Speaker B: I. Or is that separate? [00:46:33] Speaker A: I get a Soda. [00:46:36] Speaker B: That's fine. [00:46:37] Speaker A: It's separate. No, it's like a meal. It's not a combo. It's like a. It's like a platter. It was like less than $6. [00:46:42] Speaker B: That's insane. That's actually insane. [00:46:47] Speaker A: Yeah. You know, it also really hits for breakfast. There's only like two of them left in the country. I was like, it's like 30 something left in the country. But there's two or one in Tulsa Village Inn. They have really good breakfast. [00:47:01] Speaker B: Nice. I like it. Like it a lot. We got the Image Classic set next. [00:47:10] Speaker A: Yes. [00:47:11] Speaker B: Then we got the Avatar Fire and Ash action figures. [00:47:14] Speaker A: Fire and Ash? I was gonna say ass, but I was like, I don't want to get canceled. I have a story to tell about Fire and Ash. [00:47:23] Speaker B: Okay. [00:47:24] Speaker A: Former guests on our Sleepy Hollow episode, Eloy Martinez, my friend in Chicago, he went to Target and was like browsing around their like media section clearance. And famously Target does not carry DVDs or Blu Rays or anything. No physical movies at all anymore. And in the clearance, in the clearance aisle was a 4k of avatar 3 for like 25 bucks. [00:47:54] Speaker B: Oh, dang. [00:47:55] Speaker A: So we bought was like a steel book. [00:47:58] Speaker B: Dang. [00:47:58] Speaker A: My theory is it's a return. Cuz they probably still saw them online. And it's probably someone returned it from online. [00:48:05] Speaker B: Probably. [00:48:06] Speaker A: It was labeled as opened, but it wasn't. [00:48:12] Speaker B: Sounds like Eloy's got all the luck. [00:48:14] Speaker A: Yeah, Varang, baby. That's what they say in Avatar is like. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We have the Doom, the Dark Ages toy finalist of the year ad. Yeah, Toy eventually. Because I love Doom And I love McFarland Toys. [00:48:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:48:30] Speaker A: That is the end of Rat City. 2:22, 2222. [00:48:36] Speaker B: Yes, indeed, Johnny. Discretion is advised. [00:48:56] Speaker A: Anyway, next up we have Sam and Twitch. 222222. This is the. [00:49:09] Speaker B: The 2 millionth and 222,000th 222nd issue of Sam and Twitch Case Files. [00:49:20] Speaker A: Oh my God. [00:49:22] Speaker B: 22222. [00:49:23] Speaker A: It's our second issue of the night David. And is our number 22. [00:49:29] Speaker B: Number 22. Sam and Twitch. Sam and Twitch Case Files. Number 22. [00:49:34] Speaker A: A crack banger. A firecracker of an issue. [00:49:36] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. And it's got two covers. Both covers done by the same person, Raymond Gay. [00:49:43] Speaker A: I have the A cover, I have the B cover. Which do you have? Am I right? [00:49:51] Speaker B: That's the A cover. Yeah. And I have the B cover because it's. [00:49:53] Speaker A: I have a cover and it's Sandwich Witch and like A Christmas Massacre. This is a Christmas tree overthrown. Unopened presents and Santa Claus. A crease of Santa Claus. It's amazing. [00:50:04] Speaker B: There's a broken. There's a broken plate of milk and cookies. Yeah, it's awesome. [00:50:12] Speaker A: And this is from March 2026. It sounds like something went wrong. [00:50:19] Speaker B: Absolutely. And then the only difference on the B cover doesn't have the trade dress, so it's blank. The Virgin. [00:50:26] Speaker A: Well, not blank, but blank of titles. [00:50:29] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:50:30] Speaker A: It's a great cover. It's very evocative. [00:50:32] Speaker B: It's very good. It's a very. [00:50:33] Speaker A: Reminds me of that Tales of the Cryptography episode where the serial killer is, like, dressed up as Santa Claus. The girl lets him in, and Sam [00:50:42] Speaker B: is definitely lighting a cigarette with the butt of a previous cigarette. [00:50:46] Speaker A: Be better if it was off a Christmas light, a live wire. [00:50:51] Speaker B: That would be pretty awesome. [00:50:53] Speaker A: Let's light the cigarette and open these covers and get into the credits and [00:50:58] Speaker B: where they are due. And we've got Johnny. We've got script plot by Thomas Healy with additional script by Tom McFarlane. [00:51:05] Speaker A: Get your dirty paws out of here, Todd. Leave Thomas alone. I'm just gonna say it. I'm saying I'm off the cuff. This is Spawn after Dark. [00:51:14] Speaker B: Get it? [00:51:15] Speaker A: Let him. Let him do his thing. [00:51:16] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:51:16] Speaker A: What did he contribute? What did he do? [00:51:19] Speaker B: I don't know. I'm sure we'll figure it out. I didn't. I couldn't clock it. I couldn't either, but we'll see. Art by Von Randall. Color by FCO Plasencia and color flats by Sheila Saldanya. Lettering by Tom Orzikowski. Cover the covers. The creative director is Todd McFarlane and the editor in chief is Thomas Healy. Previously in Sam and Twitch. After deciding to speak with Detective o', Shea, Sam and Twitch discover his body. [00:51:52] Speaker A: And we cut to open with. [00:51:55] Speaker B: We open on. [00:51:56] Speaker A: It's like seven, dude. It feels like a scene out of seven. [00:51:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:51:59] Speaker A: Kind of issue. [00:52:00] Speaker B: Same with Twitch. [00:52:00] Speaker A: Just very David Fincher. And I hope Thomas Healy. That's a compliment. [00:52:05] Speaker B: Mm. We open with Sam and Twitch. [00:52:08] Speaker A: Do you know what movies are Bangers? David. [00:52:10] Speaker B: The David Finch movies? [00:52:12] Speaker A: 7. [00:52:13] Speaker B: 7. [00:52:14] Speaker A: Zodiac and what's this other one that's kind of like this Gone Girl? [00:52:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:52:22] Speaker A: Have you seen Gone Girl? [00:52:23] Speaker B: I have seen Gone Girl, yes. [00:52:25] Speaker A: It's very good. It's one of my top 10 favorite movies, I would imagine. [00:52:29] Speaker B: Oh, really? Yeah. Interesting. It's good. It's good. Makes me feel things that I don't want to feel, but it's good. [00:52:39] Speaker A: But this. This whole. This issue specifically, and the ARC's been building up to this, but this is like kind of the midpoint. Like, everything's up. [00:52:46] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:52:47] Speaker A: I just love this issue. [00:52:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:52:48] Speaker A: It reminds me something out of a David Fincher movie. [00:52:51] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:52:51] Speaker A: Because we open on Salmon Twitch, where they just. They got that text. [00:52:54] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:52:55] Speaker A: It was like, you know, come, we gotta talk about this case and. Okay, we'll go the old detective's house. [00:53:02] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:53:03] Speaker A: His left. Top. Top. I guess from your perspective, the top left side of his head is blown. No, top right side of his head is blown off. [00:53:12] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:53:12] Speaker A: From his perspective, looking at him, it's the top left. [00:53:15] Speaker B: It's a stage right. Stage right is blown. [00:53:18] Speaker A: Stage right. Stage right head is blown off. [00:53:24] Speaker B: Oh, man. [00:53:26] Speaker A: And then I implemented that with my friends group in Halo. Like, the enemy's base was stage. And like, we would always use it. [00:53:36] Speaker B: Nice. [00:53:36] Speaker A: Because it was brand and like. But Aaron wasn't a theater guy, and he used, like, stage rider stage left. It was amazing. It actually really helped because, like, their base was the stage facing you. [00:53:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:53:49] Speaker A: And so it was stage right or stage left. [00:53:51] Speaker B: Nice. That's a. It's good tactical thinking. That's. [00:53:57] Speaker A: That's what'll win a general David. It could have been. [00:53:59] Speaker B: That's what will win us the next wars. [00:54:02] Speaker A: Well, yeah. Yeah. Yes. Not just drones, [00:54:07] Speaker B: but. So. So the first thing Sam does is he lights up a cigarette. [00:54:13] Speaker A: And Twitch is like, I saw a dead body. I'd be like, can I get a cigarette? Like, I walked in with a guy with a head blown off. I'd be like, and I haven't smoked, like, a tobacco cigarette in a while. A year or so. [00:54:26] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:54:26] Speaker A: Like one. Like, I don't. Like, I've never buy them bottom like eight or nine years. But, like, if I walked in and saw dead body, like, yeah. Anyone got a smoke? [00:54:37] Speaker B: The situation calls for it. And Twitch is like, I'm gonna call it in. And Sam's like, hold on a second. Let's. Let's root around for. [00:54:43] Speaker A: For a second. Yeah. Because like, oh, you get like three or four minutes. You're like, we just found. [00:54:48] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. That's what she's like, fine, but we need to be quick. So they. They find some old cases. They. They do a quick work. They do quick work. They put on gloves and they find some stuff. And Sam finds something, and he's like, ah, shit. It's like a. It's basically a suicide note slash apology slash confession. And it's completely covered in Oshi's blood. [00:55:16] Speaker A: Oh, my God. [00:55:17] Speaker B: And Sam's like, I think you should read this. And Twitch is like, are you sure it's that simple? And Sam says, no, no, no, no. These things aren't that simple. But this is. This is something that we should seriously consider. We shouldn't. We shouldn't overthink that part of it, but. Okay, we found what we need to go ahead and call it in. So Twitch calls it in. [00:55:35] Speaker A: It's like a suicide note. [00:55:36] Speaker B: It's up. Yeah, it is. Says, I've done things I'm ashamed of. [00:55:43] Speaker A: That's a great penmanship. [00:55:44] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:55:45] Speaker A: Handwriting. Oh, my God. I thought he took a tea bag and, like, put in the oven for a second and, like, burn part of it with a lighter. [00:55:52] Speaker B: I thought it was a good man. I wasn't. This world isn't what it seems. The evil is everywhere. It's coming for me now. I won't let it have my soul. I should have said no long ago. [00:56:07] Speaker A: I mean, I could agree with that. [00:56:08] Speaker B: That's. That's. [00:56:10] Speaker A: It's weird how the L on the long and the last line is capitalized. Yeah, I thought you would have clocked that as a grammar nerd. [00:56:20] Speaker B: No, I didn't. Well, no, it's. It's. [00:56:23] Speaker A: It's capitalized. That's capitalized. [00:56:25] Speaker B: Look, it's got. It's got the same length of the thing as the. The. The inlet above it. So it's. It's. It's serif. It's a serif. Lowercase. [00:56:37] Speaker A: No, but it's square. The one. The lowercase is. Is. Is circular. It's. [00:56:42] Speaker B: It's. [00:56:42] Speaker A: It's rounded. Look at them. They're different. [00:56:47] Speaker B: I feel like it's the. I feel like it's the. [00:56:49] Speaker A: It's not the same. They wrote it in the Notes app and they copied and pasted from the Notes app. That's all I'm saying. Because they hit enter and they didn't forget to uncapitalize the law. [00:56:59] Speaker B: It looks the exact same as the L and evil. The Ellen evil. It looks exactly like any of it. [00:57:04] Speaker A: No, it doesn't. [00:57:05] Speaker B: It's even got the. [00:57:07] Speaker A: No, it's bigger. David, you're insane. [00:57:13] Speaker B: I wish I had a ruler with me. [00:57:15] Speaker A: No, it's not the same. You obviously. You obviously don't look at printed numbers all day, probably. You obviously don't. [00:57:25] Speaker B: So it's not the same. So Twitch calls it in. He says, officer down at my location. And then. You know, actually, I think this. This might be. This might be the Todd McFarlane. It's getting late, but this once quiet, Neighborhood has now exploded with lights, noise, and activity. When a call comes in for officer down, everyone shows up. That is. [00:57:47] Speaker A: You found it. That is totally fine. Like, it's so easy to spot. We're like, you're 100% right. [00:57:58] Speaker B: So the. There's. [00:57:59] Speaker A: You know, Cuz imagine that scene without that. It would be just better. [00:58:04] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:58:05] Speaker A: Silent again. We all know. [00:58:07] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, we get it. We get it. So the. The house is roped off. There's ambulances, there's police cars. There's guys in hazmat suits dealing with the body. And the. The. Who is this guy? What is this? [00:58:26] Speaker A: He's like, the inspector. [00:58:27] Speaker B: Yeah, he's the inspector. He comes over, he's talking to him, and he's like, so take me through what you did. And Twitch is like, yeah, well, we got here at this time, we saw. We saw Detective Rocher was dead, and we called it in. It's Sam's like, yep, called it in right away. [00:58:43] Speaker A: I know. He's ridiculous. [00:58:47] Speaker B: And he's like, so, yeah, he's like, why did you come over here? Did you have a relationship with him? And Sam's like, well, we inherited some of his cases, and he was calling us to come see. [00:58:57] Speaker A: Texting us. [00:58:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:59:00] Speaker A: Then we get the opening. [00:59:01] Speaker B: We get the opening quote, and then some captain comes over, and he sends the inspector away. And the captain's like, what the fuck is wrong with you two? What are you doing here? [00:59:14] Speaker A: Why are you harassing this man? [00:59:16] Speaker B: Yeah, they're like, well, what are you. We're just. We're just following. We're just following the leads. He reached out to us. We were following the leads. [00:59:22] Speaker A: I inherited all these cases, man. [00:59:24] Speaker B: Yeah, Sam's getting all. Sam's getting all loud and upset, and Twitch is like, hold Sam. You need to go take a breather. Twitch is just, like, laying it out. He's like, captain, we're here because we're following up on these cases. We got this. We got this message. That's why we're here. And Captain's like, okay, whatever you say. I suggest you to go home and. And shake it off. Which is like, roger, Roger. [00:59:58] Speaker A: And then the captain, roger, my favorite meme. [01:00:01] Speaker B: I fucking use it weekly, at least. [01:00:04] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, absolutely. [01:00:05] Speaker B: The captain gets on the phone. He says, o' Shea killed himself. The recipient or the person on the other end says, should we be worried? And Captain says, I don't know yet. Haven't been able to get inside. And then the person asks Amberk, and the captain says, he's problematic. And then they say, then resolve it. [01:00:27] Speaker A: He tweeted about Gamergate. [01:00:31] Speaker B: Who? Sam. [01:00:32] Speaker A: Yeah, that's always problematic. Yeah. [01:00:36] Speaker B: And then we see Sam and Twitch driving home. And Sam's like, okay, Twitch. Okay, Twitch, don't get mad at me, but I stole this file. And Twitch is like, jesus Christ. And Tim's like, okay, okay, I just need you. I'm gonna read it tonight, and then I just need you to sneak. I just need you to sneak it back in there tomorrow. That's all I need from you. [01:00:56] Speaker A: Slip it in. There's a lot of paperwork at government organizations, so. [01:01:00] Speaker B: Yeah, easy. Yeah. Twitch is like, okay, you got the night. That's it. So Sam goes home to his. His. His dark, empty, catless apartment. What happened? [01:01:14] Speaker A: It's not empty. It's got seven beers. Because he thinks ahead. He's a. A beer. And then it's like another six pack, so he obviously run along. And some old Chinese food that's open on, unfortunately. [01:01:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:01:27] Speaker A: Probably dried out. [01:01:29] Speaker B: And some. Some salad dressing. And while he's looking in the fridge. [01:01:34] Speaker A: So what's the problem? That's dinner, baby. [01:01:35] Speaker B: Yeah, that's. Yeah. [01:01:36] Speaker A: Seven beers and some salad dressing. You're. You're good to go. When I was 24, probably. [01:01:46] Speaker B: Oh, man. Ketchup, mustard, and saltines. I've. That. That's been a. That's been a dinner before of my life. [01:01:53] Speaker A: Are you serious? [01:01:54] Speaker B: Yeah. And so Sam's looking at his. [01:01:57] Speaker A: So we got the Zodiac Killer. Like, the eyes appear behind him while he's looking the fridge. It's that Zodiac. [01:02:02] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. He sneaks up on. [01:02:05] Speaker A: He's like, I'm. I'm from a David Fincher movie. I'm gonna kill you. [01:02:08] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:02:09] Speaker A: Sorry, Said. [01:02:10] Speaker B: Yeah, he sneaks up on Sam, but he. He steps on the. He steps on the loose. The loose floorboard. And Sam's just like, huh, huh. And. [01:02:19] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:02:19] Speaker B: And then this also might be some topic. [01:02:21] Speaker A: Fallen peppering. [01:02:22] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:02:23] Speaker A: But I. I liked this speech, like the narrator speech about how he's a big guy, but he's. He's not. No one recalls him. Fat to his face because he's built like a linebacker. [01:02:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:02:34] Speaker A: Big guy. You know, I'm a big guy, but, like, punch me in the face. [01:02:38] Speaker B: One that hits like a train. [01:02:40] Speaker A: Yeah, I hit like a train. [01:02:41] Speaker B: Sam. Sam just takes this guy down and he says. [01:02:47] Speaker A: Yeah, but he pulls a secret knife. The. Sam shoots him just in time. [01:02:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:02:56] Speaker A: Or shoots at him. No, he doesn't shoot him. [01:02:59] Speaker B: No. [01:03:00] Speaker A: I love the red background in this. I mean, this was amazing. This Is such a cool little fight. [01:03:05] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a good. It's good. It's good. It's nicely choreographed. And he's like. Punches him. [01:03:13] Speaker A: They're both exhausted, and Sam's got him underneath him. [01:03:15] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:03:16] Speaker A: Pushes him off him. And Sam's got that badass, like, gun harness on. He looks like a. Yeah, I wish I had a reason to wear that. I wish it was a photographer. I just had to wear a gun harness with a camera attached. You know what I mean? [01:03:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:03:30] Speaker A: Sam's like, oh, you're not a hallucination. I'm gonna beat the out of you. [01:03:34] Speaker B: And then, like, knocks him unconscious. And then after he knocks him unconscious, he stands up and he says, son of a. I've got you. And he's lighting up a cigarette and it says. [01:03:45] Speaker A: And then. To be continued, we get the bullet hole. [01:03:49] Speaker B: Yeah. The blood splatter spawn skull thing. [01:03:52] Speaker A: I love how dark this issue. Like, the last half of it's, like, black, like, thick ink. [01:03:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [01:03:57] Speaker A: It still smells good. Smell it, David. Smell it. [01:04:01] Speaker B: Then we've got the avatar firing. [01:04:02] Speaker A: No, I want you to smell in front of me. [01:04:04] Speaker B: Oh, it smells good. It smells so good. Call of Duty spawn. Toy ads. New generation, New stories. New you ads. Image Classics ad. And that's Sam and Twitch. Case files number 22. Jenny, it was awesome. Yeah, it was real good. [01:04:21] Speaker A: Your puppies. You have many dogs. You might get arrested, much like Linda Blair, star of the Exorcist, soon. Yeah, this might be our last episode because you might be on the America's Most Wanted list. [01:04:32] Speaker B: This. Yeah, I gotta. I. I'm actually trying to hurry to go give some subcutaneous fluids to a little tiny puppy. [01:04:39] Speaker A: All right, so let's rate these subterranean puppies. [01:04:48] Speaker B: Yes, indeed. [01:04:49] Speaker A: First up, we had rat city 22. Our first of the two. Two. Two, two. Two two of the night. And I loved it. It was amazing. Like, I. When I read these issues, David, when I reread them today, I got so excited because I, like, I know we're a few months behind, but still the strongest miniseries in the sponsor universe through thick and thin have been Sam, Twitch, and Rat City. [01:05:18] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah, absolutely. [01:05:20] Speaker A: And Rat City 22 did not disappoint old characters. It ties things together. It's like, okay, that guy and her, like, it's just. It's really, really cool to have, like, a really thought out story where they're responding to what's working and, like, just like a serialized story. [01:05:40] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:05:41] Speaker A: Whereas instead of Todd McFarlane just being, like, blowing a load on A page. You being like, what? [01:05:47] Speaker B: What? It's the same. [01:05:49] Speaker A: If you don't get the ring to the lion in Africa, they're all gonna die. [01:05:53] Speaker B: Same load. You blew last issue. What? [01:05:56] Speaker A: I love this issue. The art, the colors is amazing. The color of the water. Like this team. I'm sad to learn on air that it's ending at 25, because this is a top three swan comic for me is right. [01:06:10] Speaker B: Absolutely. [01:06:11] Speaker A: And this 22, I mean, I'm gonna give it a five out of five. [01:06:16] Speaker B: Nice. Five watts. [01:06:19] Speaker A: I'm gonna have five fucking local news broadcasts. [01:06:26] Speaker B: Hell yeah. Yeah, I agree with. [01:06:28] Speaker A: Because you know, I love that local news. [01:06:29] Speaker B: Yeah, I know. I agree with everything you said, Johnny. And I also am gonna give it five straw points out of five, because I really. I really fucking loved. I really, really fucking loved it. It just hit something in me. Which means, Johnny, this is an entrance into the Hellfire Club. Oh, yeah. [01:06:48] Speaker A: But I'm hoping. I'm hoping for something else. But one of my other favorite series right now in sponsor universe is Sam and Twitch. And we have 22 to rape the puppy. And this issue was amazing. It's like a midpoint or a culmination of what's been coming through this Thomas Healy run. And I loved it. The colors of the fight, the choreograph of the fight. Like, it was very raw and just like you got your boys doing their boy. And the art is like pitch perfect. I wanted this five physical media out of five. This physical media is what will solve this case. [01:07:31] Speaker B: Absolutely. I. I agree with you, Johnny. This. This rocks. It's so good. It's just. It opens with the fucking. [01:07:40] Speaker A: It's amazing crime scene. Both amazing. [01:07:42] Speaker B: It's the. It's the creepy, creepy guy in Sans. [01:07:45] Speaker A: I feel like a David Fincher movie. [01:07:47] Speaker B: Absolutely. I agree with you, Johnny. I'm also gonna give this five. I'm gonna give this five cigarettes. After seeing a dead body out of [01:07:54] Speaker A: five, I need six. [01:07:58] Speaker B: Which means this is also a hell higher club entrance. Which perfectly fitting. [01:08:04] Speaker A: This is an extra crispy. Remember we did that once or twice. I don't. [01:08:08] Speaker B: I don't remember. [01:08:09] Speaker A: There's a thing for the. There's the extra crispy. [01:08:11] Speaker B: I don't remember what the extra crispy is. I'll find it. I'll find it. [01:08:13] Speaker A: It's an air horn. Oh, yeah, Play the air horn. [01:08:20] Speaker B: You have to tell me every time, cuz I forget. [01:08:22] Speaker A: Okay, well, hopefully remember this. We've had like two before. I think one actually. It's extra crispy. It's coming up hot. We got two Hellfire Club entries this. This week, so. [01:08:35] Speaker B: Well, that's those puppies rated Johnny. And well, you know what else is good? Like these puppies spawn the Spawn community.
